Venomoth and Butterfree's sprites switched?

My friend recently PM'd me on facebook with this.

Venonat and Venomoth are both purple, yes, but Butterfree is (1) also purple, and (2) the same purple as Venonat. Venomoth is lilac, not violet. Your argument supports the hypothesis. As for the discrepancy between Caterpie and Venomoth--that thing just came out of metamorphosis.

Furthermore: Butterfree shares Venonat's feet, hands, mouth, eyes, and antennae. This is extremely notable considering the fact that Venonat is nothing more than a purple puffball with said features.
Didn't it ever occur to you that Butterfree looks kind of... nasty?
Venomoth, on the other hand, has colored wings that shaped like those of a swallowtail butterfly, the same head structure as Metapod, and the same eyes as Caterpie/Metapod.

I rest my case, sir. Venomoth looks nothing like Venonat, while Butterfree DOES---and vice versa.

The theory, therefore:
Game Freak made a programming mistake when coding Red/Blue, and the sprites got switched. They simply covered up said mistake for convenience, and perhaps recolored all official art to reflect the change in Pokemon canon.

So. Mind = blown ?

My friend used the RSE sprites. But the thing is, if you look on the RBY sprites, Venomoth and Butterfree are shown in a similar pose, with both raising their left legs slightly.

What do you think?

Yes. Mind = blown. Venonat looks surprisingly like Butterfree, and it would make sense that something slender like Venomoth would come out of Metapod. It would seriously make sense. Hmm, I'm gonna go look up some more of these switcheroos just out of pure boredom...

Butterfree does look strikingly similar to Venonat. However, Butterfree doesn't really look anything like a moth in my opinion.

Instead of looking at their pre-evo sprites, think about their "reality" counterpart. Butterfree looks like a butterfly; Venomoth looks like a moth. That's what they're supposed to represent. The sprites couldn't switch places interchangeably because of that, and hence I highly doubt it's a mix-up.

Well Veedrock, i think the name of the pokemons are given after choosing sprites, so maybe Gamefreak switched names at their convenience to not change sprites.

This could be real, since i have seen something like this:

Trapinch ---> Vibrava ---> Flygon
Bagon ---> Shelgon ---> Salamence

now Salamence name is related to Salamander, and Vibrava looks like a Salamander (i think). Also, look at the names. BaGON, ShelGON, FlyGON?
It makes sense, since as Bagon wanted to FLY, it got WINGS and the evo could be FLYgon.

I think they switched names there or something since the colors look alright, etc.

About Bagon, he is blue (like Salamence) while Vibriva is green(like Flygon). The names are, again, found really nicely :)

I already knew this (found out from a thread from Serebiiforums when I was active there), but it's interesting nonetheless. Also the Flygon/Salamence thing doesn't make sense except for the names.

Or the artists changed the scale of the artwork. Butterfree's sprite is massive in comparison to Venonat's in RBY.

Look at Bagon. Doesn't it strike a resemblance to salamence?

Vibrava is a dragonfly. Salamence=/=dragon fly.

These are the sprites from Green. I figured this would be the best way to compare the evo lines, since it's the original. Personally, the resemblance isn't as striking now. Venonat -> Butterfree is better than Metapod -> Venemoth

Actually, in the green sprites, Butterfree w/o wings looks almost identical to Venonat (hands, eyes, mouth, feet).
