Default Critical hits

I've been wondering this for a while...

What exactly would a critical hit be in the real world? Why does it do more damage? Are normal attacks only flesh wounds, and the critical hits hit something vital? Then what about moves like Thunderbolt and Ice Beam, which would strike the entire body at once?

New theory why Critical hits happen 1/16 of the time:

Average genitalia size is 1/16 of the size of the body.

Moves that have a higher critical hit ratio hit that region more often. And Honchkrow and Absol just prefer to hit there inherently.
