Badgeholders --
Feel free to start editing these yourself in SCMS. Nonbadgeholders -- The latest version is now on-site, but not public yet, so don't look for a link from other locations on site. Please use the link below to look at the latest version when suggesting changes. http://www.smogon.com/ingame/misc/adv_tips -------------------------------------- Hey there, Basically, this thread will be about collecting information on any tips and tricks you can find in the 3rd generation games. If you know the location of a certain item, have any good technique for breeding your Pokemon, or have found any interesting tip, post it in here. If you want to post anything here, there are some rules that you have to follow:
_________________________________ Ruby/Sapphire Tips
Talk to the berry master's wife and tell her what she wants to hear:
![]()
![]() Note: Both Entei and Raikou can use Roar. As such, unless you have a Master Ball, you might want to both trap them and use a move such as Ingrain. The only Pokemon that can learn this combination in the game is Smeargle, which should be traded from R/S/E. Other Pokemon worth mentioning are Pokemon with the Soundproof, such as Mr. Mime, which are not affected by moves like Roar.
The second half of the requirements must be fulfilled after defeating the Elite Four at least once. Return to Boon Island, then buy 99 of each of the items carried by the man. Enter and exit a building, then return to see what items he has for sale. Repeat and Timer Balls should now be in stock.

The 'Ultimate Egg Move Parent' Smeargle, is without doubt the best Pokemon for breeding egg moves onto new pokemon. Smeargle is part of the Ground egg group, the largest of all the egg groups. Smeargle also has the ability to learn every move in the game, via it's signature move Sketch. Often, a combination of egg moves is only possible with the use of a Smeargle as the male parent. Thus, next to Ditto, Smeargle is the second most importing breeding tool within the game. A must have for any competitive breeder. The Catcher Smeargle @ Leftovers Level: 100 Ability: Own Tempo Jolly / Adamant, 6 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Speed ~ Spore ~ False Swipe ~ Mean Look / Foresight / Thunder Wave / Sweet Scent ~ Haze / Foresight / Thunder Wave / Sweet Scent Spore and False Swipe are a given. A Pokemon that is at 1 HP and Asleep has the highest chance of being caught, only further increased by choice of Poké Ball used. By using Smeargle, you gain STAB on False Swipe. Mean Look prevents roaming Pokémon such as the Lati twins from escaping the battle. Foresight is useful for allowing False Swipe to work on Ghost-type Pokemon. Thunder Wave is a usable alternative to Spore on Pokemon with the Insomnia ability. Haze is useful for stat-uppers, but your own stat boosting move such as Swords Dance can be used for upping the power of False Swipe. Recover or Refresh are also viable but lesser options, as you have access to recovery items, status healers and the X items. Sweet Scent is an option if you do not wish to have a separate Pokémon in your party with the move.
"Ah, youngster! Do your Pokémon's abilities intrigue you? Here, here! Let's have a look at your Pokémon!" Choose the Pokemon you want checked. He will then say: "...Hmm...This one, overall, ..." If he says "I would describe as being of average ability", then your Pokemon's IVs are between 0 and 90. If he says "I would describe as having better-than-average ability", then your Pokemon's IVs are between 91 and 120. If he says "I would say is quite impressive in ability!", then your Pokemon's IVs are between 121 and 150. If he says"I would say is wonderfully outstanding in ability!", then your Pokemon's IVs are between 151 and 186. Then the man will then proceed to mention the best IV that Pokemon possesses. If it has more than one best IV, he will randomly pick a stat every time you talk to him. "Incidentally, the best aspect of it, I would say, is its (HP / ATTACK / DEFENSE / SPECIAL ATTACK / SPECIAL DEFENSE / SPEED) ..." He then gives a judgment about that IV alone: If he says "That stat is relatively good", then the best IV is between 0 and 15. If he says "That stat is quite impressive", then the best IV is between 16 and 25. If he says "That stat is outstanding!", then the best IV is between 26 and 30. If he says "It's flawless! A thing of perfection!", then the best IV is 31. The man will then finish up his monologue with the words: "...Hm... That's how I call it." ![]()

1. Energy Guru The Energy Guru guy in Slateport City will sell Vitamins for half their original price. 2. Pokemon Swarms Sometimes, you will hear about outbreaks of some Pokemon like Seadot and Nuzleaf on their respective Routes. If you mix records with R/S, you might here about a swarm of Surskit, a Pokemon that doesn't normally appear in Emerald. 3. Lilycove Clear-Out Sale Some items in the Lilycove PokeMart, such as decorations for Secret Bases, will be on sale when this event occurs. 4. The Blend Master The Blend Master is an old man that shows up in the Contest Hall of Lilycove City after watching the TV broadcast that announces him. He can be found standing next to a Berry Blender and you can make Pokeblocks with him. Doing so with good berries will get you high level Pokeblocks with little effort. This can be helpful when you want to get good Pokeblocks to evolve a Feebas. There are other Pokemon News that happen throughout Hoenn, but most of them are generally unimportant.

This might suck and not be what you want, but I always found these 2 things very handy:
RUBY/SAPPHIRE Talk to the berry master's wife and tell her what she wants to hear: SUPER HUSTLE: You will receive a Belue Berry. COOL LATIOS: You will receive a Durin Berry. CHALLENGE CONTEST: You will receive a Pamtre Berry. GREAT BATTLE: You will receive a Spelon Berry. OVERWHELMING LATIAS: You will receive a Watmel Berry. I provided DP descriptions, as in RSE the berries can only be used for Pokeblocks. I will find what type ASAP. Belue Berry: Can be used to make a Poffin with Sour and Spicy flavors. Provides a one-time 80 power Electric attack when a Pokemon holding this item uses Natural Gift. Spelon Berry: Can be used to make a Poffin with Dry and Spicy flavors. Provides a one-time 70 power Dark attack when a Pokemon holding this item uses Natural Gift. Watmel Berry: Can be used to make a Poffin with Bitter and Sweet flavors. Provides a one-time 80 power Fire attack when a Pokemon holding this item uses Natural Gift. Durin Berry: Can be used to make a Poffin with Bitter and Sour flavors. Provides a one-time 80 power Water attack when a Pokemon holding this item uses Natural Gift. Pamtre Berry: Can be used to make a Poffin with Dry and Sweet flavors. Provides a one-time 70 power Steel attack when a Pokemon holding this item uses Natural Gift. When you leave a Pokemon at the Day Care Center, each step will be equal to one EXP. point. However, if you want an easier faster way of doing it, all you need is the Acro Bike and a mudslide. The best one to use is the Lavaridge Town Desert mudslide. Get on the bike and face the mudslide. Then, just find a way to keep the up button pushed, such as leaving a small stack of change on the up button or some other creative way. Once you figure it out, just leave your gameboy alone for a while, even overnight, and check the Daycare. Your Pokemon should have grown immensely. --- Sorry if these don't count as tips or tricks, but they are still very handy for leveling up or collecting the berries -.- |

Easy way to catch roamers in RSE (via isolation refreshing):
Prerequisits -Beat the Elite Four (since all roamers are found post-E4) -Have the roamer's in your Pokedex (only seeing it is necessary) -Speedy Mean Looker, such as Crobat, one level below the roamer in the front of your party. -Master Ball or multiple Quick and/or Ultra Balls Method 1. Fly to Route 117, and stand in front of the Pokemon Day Care. 2. Check the roamer's area in the Pokedex; if the roamer in question is on Route 117, skip to step X. 3. If the roamer is not on Route 117, enter the Day Care. 4. As soon as you enter the Day Care, exit; this refreshes the roamer's area. 5. Once outside, repeat steps 2-4 until the roamer is on Route 117. 6. Head to the patch of grass northwest of the Day Care Center and activate the Repel. 7. Run around in the grass until you encounter the roamer. 8. Trap the roamer via Mean Look. 9. Use common capturing knowlege to catch the roamer. This is the method I used in RSE to catch the Lati twins, and I believe it works jsut the same with the beast in FRLG, though I'm not entirely sure the Day Care refreshes the location of the roamer. |

Quite a bit of stuff in such a short time. Keep them coming!
@Lorak: That'll be really great. Just post here with whatever you have, and I'm sure it'll help. @Xia: I'd certainly appreciate any help with that. If you can update or fix anything, then go ahead. Also, the roaming pokemon's guide looks great, but I just need confirmation whether going in and out resets the locations on FR/LG. If it's true, then I'll edit it in the OP. @KD24: Actually, these tips are great. I'll edit them in the OP. Some screen shots would help for the second 'trick', but if you can't get any, then it's fine, I'll do something about it. Thanks for your help. @Meow: I was planning on writing a more detailed description on the cloning glitch, but this can be used as an initial write-up. Thanks! @Sandslash: Doesn't look bad, but can you further elaborate? For example, list which pokemon gives which EVs, etc. I don't have XD (>.<), so I can't do it myself. @Viletung: I think screen shots would be enough, but if you want to do a video, and the moderators say it's ok, then go ahead ;) I'll start editing in the OP in a while. Thanks everybody! |

Just throwing in some Cube game tidbits: Shadow Pokemon don't gain any EVs so you don't need to worry about screwing up a Pokemon before it's purified.
Also, when a Pokemon appears at a Poke Spot, its nature, gender and IVs are set. However, its level isn't. There's really no real reason to know this, but yeah. Another fun thing is that Seedot swarms in Emerald are weird. The early area ones have Leech Seed in addition to what they should know, and the ones in the route after Fortree have Leech Seed, Frustration, SolarBeam and Giga Drain. Also, by mixing records during these Seedot swarms you can have freak Seedot swarms in Sapphire. These aren't really tips (apart from the first point) but they're fun to know.

@MegaMewtwo: Well, the first one is ok, but I don't know of the others >.> I don't really think they're useful for competitive players.. But thanks anyways.
I can capture screen shots for the GBA games from an emulator, so I think I'll start dressing up this thread ^_^ |

Small thing, for getting the roaming Lati on your pokedex in R/S, I put a level 49 Corsola in first place in my party, bought 20 Super Repels and started searching. It saves a lot of time in my opinion, since the first wild Pokemon you come across has to be Lati@s, given that all wild Pokemon above level 50 are only found in caves.

Roaming Lati@s are level 40, so using a level 49 pkm will prevent you to encounter even them... the pkm should be a level39 one... I may write something on Fire Red/Leaf Green, but I can't think to anything atm... The only thing that people often seems to miss is the togepi egg that an old man will give you at the water labyrint, if your first party pkm has max happyness... :7

Malfunction, we need the following tips for emerald:
Synchronizor (and what it does not work with) Flame Body (and similar) The IV man I know there is a little bit of duplication between the 4th gen on synch/flame body, but I think it's necessary in this case. Start thinking hard on other things that we need to bring this one to completion. EDIT: Additionally, lets lose the numbers on the tips. They are unnecessary.

I cleaned this up a little bit to make it easier to get the last few things we need to bring this to a head --
For the flame body tip, could you provide the same monster listing (checked for 3rd generation existence of the monster and ability) and list all of those here. Add smeargle for capturing and breeding. You can likely use the entry from the 4th generation tips are they are the same thing. Money making. Probably a good one to have for emerald, at least, but if we could get FR/LG. Anything I am missing?

Sure, I'll add in those. I kinda remember there was a couple in RSE, but I'm not sure about FR/LG. Will check on them, though.
Also, thanks for that Xia! You're really a great help ;) EDIT: Actually, there is no Vs. Seeker in RSE, so gaining money won't be as easy (though you can always use the cloning glitch with at least one nugget). But I'll list them anyways. |

My memory is pretty poor, but I do remember that were some trainers who you could rebattle after rezoning a few times. I used Gentleman Walter, if I am not mistaken. But really, mass item cloning for nuggets is probably the quickest way anyhow, so lets just use that.

IIRC, i believe there is something in whatever device you get in the game. "Trainers Eyes" I believe. You can use that to re-battle, I know I used it on ruby to re-battle a couple so I could tutor my smeargle before trading it to emerald for my recent play through.

Also, I have a list of the six invisible Kecleon that can be found in Emerald (presumably in Ruby/Sapphire as well, though I have never played those). Invisible Kecleon Locations Kecleon 1 - Located on the bridge on Route 120, where Steven gives you the Devon Scope. This Kecleon must be battled to advance in the game. Kecleon 2 - Found on Route 119, west of Fortree City, in an alcove between a set of trees. The alcove in question is to the right of the ninja trainer hidden behind a fake tree. Kecleon 3 - South of the Kecleon mentioned above on Route 119, in a short passage to the left. It is one space below another "hidden" ninja trainer. Kecleon 4 - This Kecleon is hiding behind the sign pointing towards Fortree City, on Route 120. Kecleon 5 - Hiding at the top of the first staircase you encounter on Route 120. The staircase in question leads to a plot of land with a Poké Ball holding a Nest Ball to the right, and a secret base location to the left. Kecleon 6 - This Kecleon is concealed north of the Ancient Tomb on the elevated ridge near the end of Route 120. Also, here's something else, for FireRed/LeafGreen: Obtaining Repeat and Timer Balls in Kanto Repeat and Timer Balls cannot be found in any Kanto Poké Mart, but they are sold by a man on Two Island after meeting certain conditions. First, deliver Ciro's Meteorite to the man at Two Island's Game Corner; this man wants you to find his lost daughter, Lostelle. Lostelle is located on Three Island, in the Berry Forest. To get to the Berry Forest, defeat the biker gang, then head over Bond Bridge. Save Lostelle by battling the Hypno that is harassing her, and you will be taken back to Two Island. The second half of the requirements must be fulfilled after defeating the Elite Four at least once. Return to Boon Island, then buy 99 of each of the items carried by the man. Enter and exit a building, then return to see what items he has for sale. Repeat and Timer Balls should now be in stock. The second is rather obscure, but both of these tips work, as confirmed by myself. |

A quick note, in the FR/LG section about catching the roamers, in Prequisites, it says Quick Balls, but those don't exist in FR/LG.
