The Other World
Default Best In-Game NPC

Looking back at the history of the pokemon carts. Who do you think was overall the most hardest, and or symbolic NPC? My vote goes for Red, the original protagonist. Overall he wasn't hard at all considering that I beat him with mid 40's level pokemon in G/S/C. Although symbolism wise, he represent the first, true in-game boss. The true champion, the man who stands above all as the strongest... with a lv. 81/88 Pikachu. If you look at his team, it consists of pokemon that you would get from events occurring in Pokemon Yellow in both G/S/C and HG/SS. Pikachu as his starter, Charizard, Blastoise, and Venusaur were gotten in game. Lax is obvious, two blocked the path to cycling road, and Lavender/Fuchsia. And Espeon from the eevee that he would recieve in Celedon, and the Lapras he recieved from Silph co. in HG/SS. Pearl and Steve are close seconds, but in my opinion, Red will always stand above them all. Also, please don't penalize me as this did not really apply to any generation, because there isn't a forum for general pokemon discussion that is not relevant to any specific gen.

Giovanni. The big boss behind a massive organised crime syndicate. Quite early on you encounter Team Rocket, and RBY's subplot revolves around combating them. You hear things of 'the boss', and then finally you meet him, and defeat him. Then you do so again in Silph Co. You'd think that's the end of him, but no, in a shock twist he turns out to be the Viridian City Gym Leader!

Running him second would have to be Cyrus. Probably has one of the strongest characterisations in the whole series. Sure, there's nothing particularly original about an emotionless villain with a traumatic childhood, but then there's nothing particularly original about most villains. I love the way the game gives you bits of information and references about him. Like even long after he's defeated, you meet his grandfather on Route 228.

its gotta be blue. the guy who is always ahead of you no matter how hard you try. It feels as if you may not become the pokemon master you had dreamed to be. but you keep going. make it to the elite for and lo and behold you beat them! you are the master. but wait, there is blue yet again. he had beaten you to the punch and is the pokemon master. only after you beat him will you become the greatest ever, and the final boss in GSC.

agreed. Miltank took my whole team down with just rollout and milk drink. I had to get myself an onix and spam screech, tail whip and growl on it then go for the swoop with my lvl20+ croconaw.

Yeah red. I was surprised when his team consists of lvl80+ whilst mine were only lvl60+. I had to go through the elite four 10+ times to get my pokemon to be high enough lvl to beat it.

I'm surprised no one said Lance. Back in the old RBY, Lance battle was the only one, among the Elite Four, to feature the GYM Battle music. Again, you find him as the champion in GSC. He is the epitome of the legendary trainer, with his red cloak and noble aspect, and no other final Elite Four - be it Karen, Drake or Lucian - ever grasped the pathos of that fight. "Your challenge to the Elite Four ends with me, Red!". This is what a true leader of the Elite Four is about!

Actually, Red wasnt that hard for me. I had a level 88 typhlosion, a level 50 snorlax, and a bunch of pokemon I had caught just outside the cave. But steven was easy too, as i only found him after I had a level 100 swmpert and requaza. Cynthia is tough on your first playthrough, and in leaf green I had to train sooooo much with 99 revives to beat my rival, while the hoenn and jhoto champs arent too hard. I go with Kanto rival as it took a million tries to beat him, while cynthia I was ready played smartly with 99 revives AND 99 hyper potions.

Wally was great. He starts out as a minor tutorial for catching Pokemon, cameos in a pitiful battle in front of Mauville Gym, and then suddenly shows up at the end of Victory Road with a shiny new level in badass.

My favorite, though, would be ???. You know, the red-haired guy. Obsessive to an extreme, and believes only in power. Cool character to have around.

Ok, how did you guys forget the last Team Rocket member in GSC? He was absolutely hilarious. Bye-bye-a-go-go!

Loved that guy. I remember my sister even named him. Can't remember what though.

Also, I liked one of the Rockets in FR/LG on Mt Ember. "Conveniently develop amnesia and forget what you heard!"

And more support for the shorts kid. Notice in FR/LG his description of shorts changes to "delightfully comfy and easy to wear".

The guy who gave you Dream Eater in RB/FRLG was an asshole. He was there but you couldn't get to him until later, and then to be a jerk and to make you realise that going back to get him was a complete waste of time he gave you Dream Eater.

Some of the rocket members in Leaf/Fire were pretty funny. Like the one that was guarding the poster, or the one that fell asleep while guarding Silph Co.

Chuck was freakin' hilarious back in the day: Oh, I'll just crush this boulder, oh wait, that has nothing to do with battling.

Eusine from Crystal was kinda cool, even if his battles were annoying as hell.

Blue was cool, but it's from G/S/C that I remember him the fondest.

And, of course, the Gym Guy.

The hardest trainer in the game (RBY), is the raticate trainer right at the exit of Mt Moon.

He waits there with a level 16 Raticate with Hyper Fang thats more than powerful enough to ohko nearly everything in your team, considering you should be leveled around 8-10 at that point.

Everyone else is a joke.

Err, what? I don't know how you play RBY, but I'd be a lot higher than that by the end of Mt Moon. More like 12-14 I think. For a Bulbasaur starter you'll want to have reached level 13 for Vine Whip before beating Brock, and for Charmander you're in for a tougher game anyway. I suppose maybe if you had Squirtle and five other Pokemon, and were equally levelling them, you'd be at those low levels - but getting a full team so early isn't the easiest way to beat the game.

Certainly no trainer in Mt Moon has ever given me any trouble.

The hardest thing in the world is Brock with a Charmander. I only use the fire-type starter because they are the best imo. I could beat the whole E4 in GSC with Typhlosion, as well as Red.

Yeah, I started my recent Silver run with Chikorita...LAME. Probably ended up being the single least useful Poke in my team (even my HM mule Staryu, even prior to its evolution, was more useful).
Of course maybe there's a better moveset than Razor Leaf/Cut/Light Screen/Reflect. But I figured since its offenses are mediocre, and its defenses are moderately good, screens made sense. It can tank pretty well, but everything else I have just does more damage quicker, and I'm not a patient guy.
