A very Normal approach to defeat the mud: Leader Its_A_Random vs. Yarnus of Bethany

Status
Not open for further replies.
I think I've just about gotten used to all of the mud here. Well, here is Its_A_Random's second official challenger, Yarnus of Bethany, is here to see how he'll do! He seems confident enough, and he seems to have all Normal type Pokemon with him. Anyway, here are the rules and arena description:

4v4 Doubles (IAR brings 8, chooses 4)
3 Day Player DQ Time
2 Recoveries/5 Chills Max per Pokemon

Arena: Earth Mausoleum
Field Type: Ground
Complexity: Intense
Format: All

Restrictions: No Natural Grass, Only Sandstorm & Clear weather permitted, Poorly-lit Indoor arena

Description: The Earth Mausoleum is a dark, desolate place inside a cave situated in a remote desert about 6km from the nearest city. At the entrace, you must proceed down a tunnel that is fairly dark, but is loaded to the gills with harmless Ground Type Pokemon, predominately Hippopotas & Sandshrew, even the occasional Garchomp lurking about the place. After your short walk through a prescribed route, you walk into a large, fairly well lit indoors arena, that looked very dull, but one thing's obvious; This was a Ground Type Paradise...
This arena has virtually the same dimensions as the ASB Tournament arena, but with a few differences. Firstly, the arena has mini-grandstands at the side, & the trainers stand on a Podium elevated up by 3 metres. Lastly, the arena ceiling is rather low at only 20m high.
Now, what does this arena have that gives Ground Types an edge? Firstly, The main arena floor is a hybrid of sand & dirt, mixed together to make a strange material that can easily be dug into. Additionally, the ceiling is low & creates a completely indoor feel, where Moves that require sunlight, like Solarbeam, & all other weathers bar Clear & Sandstorm, fail. Additionally, Pokemon using Sky Drop/Fly/Bounce fail to gain enough altitude to evade, that is, they become a normal attack. Next, there is a fairly large mud patch near the centre of the arena at about 10 metres in diameter, & goes to about 10 metres deep. This mud patch has a little bit of water in it, but enough to be considered an external water source, but in using it, the attack becomes combined with mud & becomes a Ground Type Attack. Additionally, anyone using the patch to dive are still vulnerable to seismic moves & get hit for double power.
Being a Ground Type paradise, how will the average player fare? We shall see soon enough...

Mechanics:
  • Mud patches around the arena have enough water to be considered usable as an external Water Source.
However, all the mud means that such attacks become Ground Type moves.
These attacks can still be nullified by Storm Drain.
Any Pokemon hiding in Mud Patches through the use of moves like Dive can also be affected by seismic moves at x2 Power.
  • Sky Drop, Fly, & Bounce all do not gain altitutde to successfully evade attacks, that is, they instead become 0 Priority attacks

Summary: Ground Type Paradise.

I'm sure we're all fairly familiar with the Mausoleum, I know I am. Here are the Pokemon we'll be seeing!

(Known attacks effected: Bullet Punch, Comet Punch, Dizzy Punch, Drain Punch, Dynamicpunch, Fire Punch, Focus Punch, Hammer Arm, Ice Punch, Mach Punch, Mega Punch, Meteor Mash, Shadow Punch, Sky Uppercut, Thunderpunch)

Resultingly it feels it can weather every strike, and will not dodge an attack even if ordered to. Only when a OHKO move is issued by the opponent does sense return, and the Pokemon acts normally. Additionally even with their extra skill, the power and exhaustion involved in using OHKO moves prevents them from being benefited by No Guard, they will have their normal accuracy.

Type: Normal
Normal: Normal STAB; adapt comfortably to any surrounding after 3 actions. Able to use Outrage without losing focus.

Abilities:
Technician: Type: Innate This Pokemon is more skilled at performing weaker moves, causing any of their one-hit or two hit attacks that normally have 6 or less Base Attack Power to have their Base Attack Power on each hit multiplied by 1.5. (e.g. Aerial Ace goes from 6 to 9, Mach Punch goes from 4 to 6, Double Hit to from 4 per hit to 6 per hit etc.) The Energy Cost for a one-hit or two-hit attack is increased by one (1). Each hit in a multi-hit move is boosted by one (1) Base Attack Power, and the Energy Cost for multi-hit attacks is increased by two (2). Because Technician is a multiplier on single hit moves, its effect is applied to Base Attack Power before any additive effects. Technician only applies to combos in the rare case that an initial hit will have 6 or less BAP.
Pick Up: (Innate) This Pokemon has a natural habit of collecting items. Whenever a hold item (its own or an opponents) is used or knocked onto the ground with a move like Knock Off, this Pokemon will immediately pick up that item without using an action. It can also grab dropped or naturally occuring hold items in arenas.

Skill Link: (Innate)(unlocked) This Pokemon’s skillfull aim makes its multi-hit moves always hit 5 times. The Energy Cost of multi-hit attacks is increased by three (3).

Summary: Normal STAB; adapt comfortably to any surrounding after 3 actions. Able to use Outrage without losing focus.
Abilities:
Immunity: Type: Innate This Pokemon’s body has an immensely strong immune response to venom and does not take poison damage when Poisoned. Toxic Poisoning will not do damage; however, it will continue to grow more severe.

Thick Fat: Type: Innate This Pokemon has a great deal of extra fat or muscle that increases
its resistance to extreme heat or extreme cold, reducing the type effectiveness of Fire-and Ice-typed attacks to the next level of resistance (2x weak becomes neutral, neutral becomes resistance, etc.)

Abilities :
Adaptability: Type: Innate The moves that match this Pokemon’s type have their Base Attack Power increased by two (2).

This Pokemon receives a one (1) stage boost on the offense that strikes an opponent’s weaker defense stat. (e.g. does more damage with special attacks when facing Aggron, which has higher Defense, and attack when facing Hypno, which has higher Special Defense. For ties, Special Attack is raised.) These are some strong Normal Pokemon! But will they be strong enough to beat Its_A_Random? It'll sure be tough to win in an environment tailor-made for Ground Pokemon without a type advantage.

Good thing I always keep a few quarters on me just for official coin flips. To see who sends out Pokemon first, heads for Its_A_Random, tails for Yarnus of Bethany.

"If you did not come here to win, then why have you challenged me...Anyways, Robolem @ Expert Belt & Megawhal @ Expert Belt will open the duties today!"

Robolem: [Disable Klutz] Low Kick (Zzz!) > Dynamicpunch (Zzz!) > Low Kick (Zzz!)
IF either Pokemon use Protect (Zzz!) successfully, THEN use Dynamicpunch (Zap!) that action, pushing actions back when Low Kick is replaced.
IF Zzz! uses Bide, THEN use Hammer Arm (Zap!) the first Bide action, Dynamicpunch (Zap!) the second.
IF Zzz! faints, THEN redirect all remaining actions to Zap!.

Megawhal: Brick Break (Zzz!) > Drill Run (Zzz!) > Brick Break (Zzz!)
IF Zzz! uses Protect successfully without transfer, THEN re-direct your current attack to Zap!.
IF Zzz! uses Bide, THEN use Drill Run (Zap!) the first Bide action, Brick Break (Zap!) the second.
IF Zzz! faints, THEN redirect all remaining actions to Zap!.

Counter doesn't affect Ghost types. Also, jsyk, Counter automatically targets whatever Pokemon hit the user last with a physical move, so selecting a target is unnecessary.

The first four Pokemon are out on the field, and Yarnus of Bethany does not seem very confident right now. Megawahl starts off by punching the fat Zzz!, doing some decent damage. Zap! shoots some ice from its beak-thing at Robolem with great power! Robolem, not concerned, walks up to Zzz! and sweeps out his legs from underneath him, making Zzz! hit the ground very hard! Zzz! tries to tackle Robolem in response, but Robolem uses his ghostly power to fade away just as Zzz! was about to hit him. Zzz! looks rather concerned, since he has taken so much damage already without inflicting any himself. Zap! and Zzz! both put up magical-like shields around themselves, which seems like a rather odd strategy, since no one is gonna accomplish anything this action. Megawahl uses his big nose to shoot towards Zap!, hitting the shield and straining Zap. Robolem does his favorite thing, punching Zap!'s shield, really forcing Zap! exert a lot of effort to prevent himself from being hurt. The shields now down, Megawahl once again whacks Zzz! with his arm, wearing Zzz! down. Zap! tries to help its partner out by shooting a green beam at Megawhal, but it just doesn't do enough to slow down Its_A_Random and his Pokemon. Robolem trips Zzz! again, and Zzz! tries to respond with a tackle. Just as before, Robolem fades into nothing while Zzz! simply falls to the ground. At the end of the first round, it seems that the leader has a significant advantage. Will Yarnus of Bethany switch out a Pokemon or two and hope to swing some momentum? Will he succeed in trying to turn things around a bit? Only time will tell.

Even if Counter had no effect, Snorlax should still be paying EC cost for the Damage Taken part of Counter's EC.

Zap!

Actually, the real reason I'm doing this is to find my team's weaknesses. (and it is actually more fun to battle a strong player and lose than a weak player and win) The fact I could get a badge is just a good bonus.

Yarnus of Bethany has switched Pow! into the battle, presumably so as to preserve Zzz!, but it looks like Its_A_Random has plans of smashing things regardless. Pow! starts this round by walking up to Megawahl, and giving him a big, two-handed bitch slap. Megawahl is so astonished that he can do nothing but think of how he ain't nobody's bitch. Robolem uses his mystical robotic powers to mimic what Yarnus of Bethany's Pokemon did last round, putting up a defensive shield, but directly in front of Megawahl. Zap! launches a very powerful icy and green beam at Megawahl, but Robolem exerts himself to keep his ally protected. Pow! does exactly what Robolem loves doing, punching things! Thus he punches Megawahl with an icy blue fist. Megawahl hardly seems to mind; he applauds Zap! very loudly and enthusiastically, encouraging Zap! to repeat his strategy for more positive feedback. However, Zap! can only rest his body for now, sorry to disappoint his fans. Robolem goes ahead and--guess what--punches Pow! so hard that you can even see the stars floating around his head! Robolem quickly follows by taking a particular stance to wind up for an even more powerful blow, while Pow! decides the right move is to smack himself in the face very hard. Megawahl dashes up to Pow!, hits him, then bolts back towards Its_A_Random. Before he can reach his safe Pokeball, though, Zap! does exactly what Megawahl encouraged him to do, knocking him down with a strong beam of ice. Robolem makes his move, punching Pow! incredibly hard, apparently hitting a weak spot to do even more damage. At this point, Its_A_Random is still in a superior position, but we'll see what happens from here.

Its_A_Random has swapped out Megawahl for Utilitand, and this round is getting underway! Pow!, who really took a beating last round, jumps around evasively and runs away while shouting profanities and making obscene gestures at Utilitand. Utilitand is so frustrated that all he can think of doing is attacking, even though his trainer had other ideas. Zap! just sits still, recovering from using those big moves in the last round. Robolem, as usual, punches Pow! down into the mud, and Pow! does not get back up. Utilitand, unable to fulfill his master's commands, flails about wildly at Zap!, hurting himself in the process. Zap! continues to not do anything, recovering more vitality. Robolem swings his big arm into the stationary Zap!, which seems to hurt it quite a bit. Utilitand once again swings his many arms like crazy, slamming himself into Zap!. Zap! emits a strong wave of dark energy at Robolem, which seems to mess up some of Robolem's wiring or something, because he is taken aback and can't move! Well, this was a pretty boring round in my opinion. Although we do have the first KO, so at least there's that.

Utilitand, unable to live up to his name for now, splits the ground from underneath Zap! and some energy and light shines up, hurting Zap!, but not very much. Zap! responds by simply relaxing even more, which doesn't seem like the best of ideas right now... Yum! spits up incredible amounts of dirty, brown water across the whole other side of the field, somehow even hitting Robolem in a weakspot, getting the water inside some cracks. Robolem punches Zap! in the head, causing it to be quite dazed, and unsure of what to do. Utilitand shoots a large ball of grossness at Zap!, who seems to be getting quite weak. Despite this, Zap! once again emits a bunch of black energy towards Robolem. Yum follows up by spitting ice with high velocity at Robolem, who is also starting to get a bit weak. Robolem deals with this by punching Zap!, and seemingly transfers some battery power to itself from Zap!, who can no longer take any more abuse, and falls down to the ground. Utilitand hits the ground and again makes it open up, but this time underneath Yum!, who responds with more excessive amounts of muddy vomit all over the ground Pokemon. Robolem, with nothing left but the slightest bit of energy and health, exhausts himself to unconsciousness by punching Yum! one last time. Now Its_A_Random has 2 KO's, Yarnus of Bethany has 1, and it looks like this match is probably gonna go to the leader. But, stay tuned to find out for sure!

Sandstorm (permanent)

Its_A_Random's ever-trusty Stortamus has taken the field, finally making mud and sand fly about all over the place. Utilitand walks up to Zzz! and gestures for him to do something. That's a rather odd strategy; it seems Its_A_Random must have misspoken to his Pokemon. Anyway, Zzz! takes the invitation, and uses some vitality to create a little doll of himself as a defense. Yum! barfs some ice at Utilitand, who is getting worn out a little bit. Stortamus makes his debut move in this match by dashing up to Zzz!'s doll and hits it and bites it and wrestles with it and throws it all over the place to the point that the doll has disintegrated. Utiltand uses his power to manipulate the earth to tear the ground open from underneath Yum!, and a big flash of brownish light flashes up at him. Yum! wraps his big tongue around Stortamus, squeezing and sucking out some of Stortmus' vitality. Stortamus is unable to move, being so tired from his previous strike. Zzz! jumps at Utilitand and hits him with his head, doing little damage. Zzz! quickly begins balancing carefully and winding up for a big attack, seemingly aimed at Utilitand. Utilitand coughs up a big ball of poisonous goo at Yum!, who responds with another shot of ice. Stortamus roars, and a vortex of sand forms around Yum!, doubling the strength with which the sand and mud was hitting him. Zzz! finally uses the energy he has focused into a big punch with a blue fist at Utilitand, knocking out the spider-like creature. Now both trainers have two Pokemon down, how will it go from here?

Hey, I did better than the Water and Ice gym leaders, and brought you down to 2 pokemon, 1 weakened. I think that is an accomplishment. Still a loss, though, but I can deal with that.

Its_A_Random seems quite confident that he is giving his Pokemon their final orders for their match, and Megawahl immediately moves towards Zzz!, and swiftly punches him into unconscious. Yum!, now all on his own, summons an orange ball of energy and shoots it at Megawahl, hitting a weak spot for extra effect, but still failing to do enough. Stortamus, just like last round he attacked the doll, demolishes Yum! with all sorts of striking and biting and whatnot. Yum! also falls to the ground, unable to compete. It looks like the match is over! Yarnus of Bethany is the first person to KO some of Its_A_Random's Pokemon in his own gym, but has ultimately been defeated, leaving Its_A_Random with a perfect record.
