[Overview]

Accelgor is notable in RU, or any tier, for its amazing base 145 Speed, making it one of the fastest Pokemon in the game. Accelgor's Bug typing is decent offensively, and gives Accelgor a set of useful resistances to common attacking types. Accelgor complements its excellent Speed with a fair base 100 Special Attack stat, which along with its good STAB options and strong coverage, makes it a dangerous attacker. Furthermore, in addition to being one of the best and most reliable Spikes users in the game, Accelgor has an excellent support movepool that is superbly designed to frustrate an opponent. Things are not entirely rosy for Accelgor, however. It has absolutely pathetic defenses; almost any neutral attack will OHKO it. Additionally, its Special Attack will frequently find itself lacking, missing out on many crucial KOs. Regardless, whether it is running an attacking set or a support set, Accelgor is a threat to be considered when building a team.

    [SET]
    name: Lead
    move 1: Spikes
    move 2: U-turn
    move 3: Recover / Yawn
    move 4: Bug Buzz
    item: Focus Sash
    nature: Timid
    evs: 156 HP / 48 Def / 48 SpD / 252 Spe

    [SET COMMENTS]

Accelgor will most fequently be utilised as a lead with this set, as it is capable of setting up at least two layers of Spikes. Aside from setting Spikes layers, Accelgor can U-turn, allowing it to scout potential switch-ins or to keep its Focus Sash in the circumstance that it is Taunted. Bug Buzz uses its passable Special Attack to have some form of offensive pressure against weakened opponents. Yawn can be used to force switches, possibly crippling an opposing team member. Recover grants Accelgor extra health, allowing it to add to its Spike layers or to reset them in the case that they are removed via Rapid Spin.

    [ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

A Timid nature with full EV investment allows Accelgor to outspeed virtually everything in the tier. The given EV's give it the greatest chance of surviving weaker hits, allowing it to continue to annoy the opponent. Concurrently, Focus Sash ensures that Accelgor will survive at least one attack, nearly guaranteeing at least two layers of Spikes being set up. If Accelgor can somehow retain maximum health while setting up all three Spikes layers, for example against Ferroseed which lacks offensive presence outside of Gyro Ball, Final Gambit can be used as a suicide move, subtracting Accelgor's remaining health from the opponents current health total. Taunt almost completely shuts down this set, so a partner that can threaten common Taunt users, such as Qwilfish, is a good team idea. Entei can hold Accelgor to one layer of Spikes with ExtremeSpeed, making bulky Water-types who neutralize Entei good teammates. If Accelgor fails to fully complete its job at the beginning of a match, a Rapid Spin user will allow Accelgor to return with its Focus Sash intact and complete its mission later in the match. Neither of Accelgor's abilities are particularly useful on this set so use whichever ability suits your fancy.

    [SET]
    name: Special Attacker
    move 1: Bug Buzz
    move 2: Focus Blast
    move 3: Hidden Power Rock
    move 4: Recover
item: Life Orb / Choice Specs
    ability: Sticky Hold
    nature: Modest / Timid
    evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

    [SET COMMENTS]

With this set, Accelgor attempts to use its good Special Attack and solid neutral coverage to facilitate a sweep. Bug Buzz is Accelgor's strongest and most reliable STAB attack, and is thus its primary attacking option, hitting most Pokemon for neutral damage. Focus Blast is used alongside Bug Buzz to give Accelgor a way to damage the Steel- and Rock-types that resist Bug Buzz. Hidden Power Rock completes Accelgor's coverage, letting it hit Fire- and Flying-types super effectively, notably Moltres, who would otherwise force Accelgor out and greatly threaten the rest of the team. Recover allows Accelgor to offset Life Orb and entry hazard recoil, granting it more attacking turns; although Recover might seem to be a strange choice with Choice Specs as the item, Accelgor is sufficiently threatening to force an opponent to switch, granting that free turn to heal off passive damage.

    [ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

A Modest nature can be used instead of Timid, letting Accelgor to still reach 389 Speed while also receiving an extra power boost. However, Timid is still a useful choice on Accelgor, allowing it to outspeed maximum Speed Choice Scarf base 80s as well as neutral nature base 90 Pokemon carrying a Choice Scarf. Furthermore, it ensures that Accelgor can outspeed Pokemon such as Gorebyss and Omastar after a Shell Smash, notable Pokemon to outspeed. Additionally, the power loss is often unnoticable, still managing to OHKO Porygon-Z and Moltres with a Life Orb-boosted Focus Blast and Hidden Power Rock, respectively. Life Orb is the preferred item as Accelgor needs as much additional power as it can muster, while Choice Specs provides even more power at the cost of being locked into one move. Sticky Hold is chosen to ensure that Accelgor is insusceptible to Trick, as being Tricked a Choice item would effectively neutralize it when it is not carrying Choice Specs.

Sludge Bomb is an option for additional neutral coverage; however, Bug Buzz overlaps with its only super effective coverage. Accelgor can utilise Giga Drain effectively, getting good super effective coverage against Water- and Ground-types that would try to tank Accelgor's attacks while also providing it with a way to offest Life Orb recoil. When using Choice Specs, U-turn is a great option in place of Recover, giving Accelgor a useful way to scout opposing switch-ins and gain momentum. Offensive Accelgor greatly appreciates Rapid Spin support due to its vulnerability to all forms of entry hazards, while also appreciating the support of hazards of its own to heighten its sweeping potential. Ghost-types primarily wall Accelgor due to their resistance and immunity to Bug Buzz and Focus Blast, respectively. Pursuit support or strong offensive Dark-types, such as Krookodile, are appreciated as teammates.

    [Other Options]

With access to Baton Pass, Acid Armor, Agility, and Curse, Accelgor is capable of effectively utilising Baton Pass, passing Defense or Speed boosts to slower Pokemon that appreciate the boosts and can then attempt to sweep the opponent. For example, Eviolite Rhydon with a Curse and an Agility becomes very threatening for the opponent to deal with, either attacking them outright or setting up further boosts on the switch. When using Curse, White Herb is a useful item as it nullifies the stat drop in Speed. Me First is a niche move, but can be used on occasion to find surprise kills on Pokemon such as Altaria, which is OHKOed by its own Draco Meteor. Acid Spray can be used to weaken an opponents switch-in, halving their Special Defense and setting them up for a heavy blow the following turn.

Encore can be used to gain free attacking or setup turns by locking an opponent into a non-damaging move. Despite the lack of Taunt, Accelgor can attempt to aid in wall breaking through the use of Toxic. Guard Split can be used to weaken opposing walls while simultaneously boosting its own defenses. Access to Struggle Bug allows Accelgor to function as a last-ditch check to special attackers, lowering their Special Attack. Pursuit can be used to ensure that weakened opponents do not survive; however, its low base Attack means that the opponent would have to be severely weakened for this strategy to work. Accelgor can also function on rain teams, being the fastest user of Rain Dance in the tier. Accelgor can then benefit by gaining a status immunity with its secondary ability, Hydration.

    [Checks And Counters]

Accelgor lacks overwhelming power, so Pokemon with strong Special Defense such as Cryogonal can sit in front of Accelgor all day with little issue. Taunt users will completely shut down the lead set, although Accelgor will outspeed all common users of the move. Fire-, Flying-, and Ghost-types all resist Accelgor's primary offensive options and can threaten with super effective attacks or whittle down Accelgor with Night Shade in return, in the case of Ghost-types. Status ruins Accelgor, particularly paralysis which strips it of its primary asset.

    [Dream World]

Accelgor gets the ability Unburden from Dream World, doubling its Speed when it loses its item. While this can be used on the lead set after taking a hit, Accelgor is already blazingly fast, so the ability has almost zero value.

Though this may only deserve OO mention, Encore is a pretty useful move, despite being illegal in conjunction with Spikes. A simple set of 252 Hp / 4SDef / 252 Spd w/Timid and Encore+Bug Buzz+U-Turn/Substitute+Filler can be pretty annoying and useful.

Why is Giga Drain even mentioned as the third move on the Life Orb set? You say that it's for Water- and Ground-types, but Kabutops and Omastar are both destroyed by Focus Blast and Qwilfish isn't hit super-effectively. Poliwrath is literally the only thing it hits that anything else doesn't. All the Ground-types are taken care of by BUg Buzz. Mention Giga Drain in AC, move Hidden Power Rock to the third moveslot, and leave Recover unslashed.

Final gambit uses your remaining hp, i dont think final gambit will do quite enough at 1 hp.

Rain Dance at least in OO IMO. It's fast and can Final Gambit or U-turn its way out or set up Spikes. Hydration is also cool for it.

Standing by both sets (they're ridiculously good) but slash Timid on the Special Attacker set since it lets you outspeed slow shell smashers (Omastar, Gorebyss, Huntail)

Yeah, definitely slash Timid on Special Attacking Accelgor since it helps you outspeed plus speed nature Scarf base 80's and neutral speed Scarf base 90's. The most important things it lets you outspeed are the Scarf sets of both PorygonZ and Moltres since they are almost always using Modest over Timid. As well as what Mr.Earthbound here said about it letting you outspeed dangerous Shell Smashers like Omastar, Gorebyss, and Huntail to hit with Giga Drain. It pays off in the long run since even by using the weaker offensive Timid nature an LO Focus Blast and Hidden Power Rock OHKO PorygonZ and Moltres respectively.

Because of Accelgor's low defenses and decent HP, a spread of 156 HP / 48 Def / 48 SpD / 252 Spe has better overall bulk than 252 HP / 252 Spe if you do the calculations, and having lower HP is useful since it reduces the effectiveness of Pain Split and Leech Seed somewhat. Unless you're using Final Gambit, I think this should be the primary spread.

Alternatively, using a max Def spread could possibly be better since it effectively increases Accelgor's physical bulk by 50%, as opposed to max HP which increases both special and physical bulk by 20%. It'd be helpful against random priority attacks.

I'm not on the GP team but I'll check it anyway. Also want to say I've used this thing and it's my favorite RU mon. You had a lot of longer sentences and not as many short ones so I broke a few up to add variety. Other than that, very nicely written.

Check implemented with the exception of one phrasing I didn't like; I reworded it another way anyway.

If I may make a suggestion, have a colour for changes as well, so the author can tell when you mean to use a synonym instead of the word.
