Alakazam Bulky Offense by kokoloko
Introduction
Welcome to the second ORAS UU staff RMT! This UU team, created by kokoloko, was selected for the archive due to its ideal representation of the Alakazam metagame and showcase of several other important threats which have been crucial in the development of the tier. It's clear to see why Alakazam was banned from UU, with its sky-high Special Attack and Speed making it an incredible wallbreaker. Furthermore, its ability Magic Guard negates Life Orb recoil and residual damage, making it a nightmare to handle for defensive teams and an excellent revenge killer against offensive teams when equipped with a Focus Sash.Introduction
kokoloko's team utilises the standard Life Orb Alakazam. The team itself is a bulky offensive build that was commonly seen during the Alakazam metagame. It features Life Orb Hydreigon and Calm Mind Suicune, two of the most dominant Pokemon in ORAS UU, and Pursuit Mega Aerodactyl, which rose in popularity at the time as an excellent check to Alakazam and other frail special attackers. Florges makes another appearance as one of the best bulky wincons for balance. It also fills an important role as the team's cleric. Nidoqueen rounds off the team as its Stealth Rock setter, and along with Hydreigon and Alakazam forms a devastating trio of specially attacking wallbreakers.
In-Depth
Alakazam @ Life Orb
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psychic
- Shadow Ball
- Substitute
- Focus Blast
The key move on this set is Substitute, which lets Alakazam punish the switches it forces to scout, get around an attempted sack to Pursuit trap it with an opposing Mega Aerodactyl, and dodge Sucker Punch from Toxicroak and Mega Absol, which can threaten the team if Nidoqueen or Florges are weakened, respectively. Although it's frail, Alakazam can find the opportunity to switch in on Pokemon such as Tentacruel that try to spin away hazards, and Cobalion on a predicted Stealth Rock.
Florges @ Leftovers
Ability: Flower Veil
EVs: 248 HP / 236 Def / 24 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Moonblast
- Aromatherapy
- Synthesis
- Calm Mind
Florges's Aromatherapy lets Suicune use Rest a little more freely, relieves Hydreigon of any Scald burns, and cures Aerodactyl of paralysis it might have picked up from revenge killing opposing Sash Alakazam. Overall, Florges is a key member of most balance teams throughout ORAS because of all the attackers it checks and the utility it brings to them.
Suicune @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 240 HP / 216 Def / 52 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Roar
- Rest
- Calm Mind
The combination of Calm Mind Suicune and Calm Mind Florges can overwhelm opposing balance cores; for example, a burned Milotic cannot hope to stall out both Suicune and Florges, and opposing Roar Suicune will have a hard time staying healthy enough to continually phase out Florges. The lack of Sleep Talk is not as significant as it otherwise might be due to Florges's access to Heal Bell, allowing Suicune to utilise Rest more liberally.
Hydreigon @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Dark Pulse
- Roost
- Taunt
Hydreigon is not only a devastating wallbreaker but also a fantastic team player. Its natural bulk, solid typing and access to Roost allow it to check many threatening Pokemon that this team and other similar balanced builds would struggle heavily against, such as Krookodile, Entei, Chandelure and Mega Houndoom. It's also an excellent partner to Alakazam thanks to its aforementioned ability to weaken various specially bulky Pokemon and prevent them from healing. Overall, with its destructive power and excellent defensive attributes, Hydreigon is an integral member of kokoloko's team.
Nidoqueen @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Earth Power
- Sludge Wave
- Stealth Rock
- Ice Beam
Earth Power and Sludge Wave provide Nidoqueen with two excellent STAB moves while Ice Beam supplements them perfectly as a coverage move, leaving only a select few Pokemon in UU which resist all of Nidoqueen's moves. Stealth Rock support is highly appreciated by Alakazam and Suicune, and therefore makes Nidoqueen an integral supporting member of the team. Nidoqueen can easily use her threatening presence and resistances to find opportunities to set it up. While Nidoqueen sets usually run some HP EVs, kokoloko forgoes this for maximum Speed investment, allowing her to outrun any Pokemon with uninvested base 100 Speed and lower, such as Tentacruel and Salamence.
Aerodactyl @ Aerodactylite
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Roost
- Pursuit
Apart from its support capabilities, Aerodactyl is also perfectly capable of sweeping weakened teams. Stone Edge is a very strong STAB move that destroys Ice-, Fire-, and Bug-types such as Kyurem, Entei, Darmanitan, and Mega Beedrill, and can be a difficult move to defend against late-game when the opponent's walls are worn down. Earthquake provides important coverage against Steel-types such as Doublade, Cobalion and Nidoqueen, which resists Aerodactyl's STAB move. Roost grants Aerodactyl longevity and allows it to continuously switch into threats throughout the match. With the team's lack of hazard removal methods, Roost becomes even more crucial. Thanks to its offensive and defensive capabilities, Aerodactyl is an excellent choice to round off kokoloko's team.
Threatlist
Spikes: With no entry hazard removal, this team is quite prone to being worn down by Spikes, especially in conjunction with wallbreakers and sweepers such as Heracross, Cobalion and Mega Sceptile. Forretress can set up Spikes against Florges and Mega Aerodactyl; Froslass, Roserade, and Chesnaught can also find opportunities to set up Spikes against at least one member of kokoloko's team.
Physical sweepers: While Suicune is supported by Florges's Aromatherapy, it won't always find the opportunity to wake up throughout the course of a game to phase out Speed-boosting sweepers. Pokemon such as Dragon Dance Feraligatr, Dragon Dance Salamence, dual dance Cobalion, Hone Claws Mega Aerodactyl and Slurpuff can take advantage of a sleeping Suicune to set up and potentially sweep. Powerful attackers like Mamoswine, Krookodile and Mega Swampert can also fire off their powerful STAB moves to either 3HKO Suicune while its asleep or threaten any other member of the team that switches in.
Blissey: While Hydreigon and Suicune can attempt to stall it out, nothing on kokoloko's team can directly deal with Blissey. Supported by answers to Calm Mind Suicune and Aerodactyl, Blissey can be difficult to take out for this team.
The lack of a Steel-type on kokoloko's team makes certain Pokemon that threaten the Florges + Suicune backbone an issue. These include Mega Beedrill, Gardevoir, Shaymin, Roserade, opposing Alakazam and offensive Snorlax. Mega Aerodactyl can trap most of these Pokemon to limit their potential, but dislikes switching directly into them.
