Online Competition Alola Friendly [Post Your Results!]

I'm planning to use Arcanine over A-Marowak. What item and spread should I use ? I've seen an interesting set with Flare Blitz, ESpeed, WoW and Morning Sun.

I'm going to use an alternative version of the team i'm using right now to play on BSS. I tested a bit on Sd Ladder and it seems working well.

Here it is:

IVs: 0 Atk
- Hidden Power [Ice]

I would run a naughty or lonely on Garchomp. Choice chomp wants all the power it can get, and jolly is not required because you're outspeeding most things anyway.

Hey I need some advice for my team. I didn't see any other forum or anything for the Alola friendly so I am guessing it's okay to ask for help here since others did? I have added some small explanation for how I am trying to build my team. Any suggestions would be appreciated this is my first competitive team I am prepping for Sun Moon.

Here is a replay of a very good match I had. So you can see how I use it.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7alolafriendly-521946474

My main core is Gyarados, Magnezone, and Tapu Lele. They each are great switch ins for each other and compliment really well as I've been testing it. The other three I'm mostly looking for the advice on. Especially Cloyster who I have recently added. Switched from Nihilego suicide setter after it wasn't fast enough.

Angry Fish (Gyarados) @ Icium Z
Ability: Intimidate
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 32 HP / 252 Atk / 224 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Ice Fang (has saved me a lot on dragon types like garchomp)

Gyarados is a good switch in from Magnezone. It doesn't get hit by Earthquake and it resists fire. And if I have Gyarados in first I can switch to Marowak for Electric spam.

Seafood (Cloyster) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Skill Link
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Toxic Spikes
- Shell Smash
- Icicle Spear
- Rapid Spin

This guy is a setter and also an anti-setter. Icicle Spear can take down opponent setters with sashes because of multi-hit. It can also tank earthquakes pretty well as its defense is massive.

ALIENS (Magnezone) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 128 HP / 252 SpA / 128 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Flash Cannon
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
- Hidden Power [Fire]

This is my go-to switch in from Tapu Lele. I usually run into a poison-type and then switch into Magnezone for safety and it resets the scarf.

Ali'iloa (Marowak-Alola) (M) @ Thick Club
Ability: Lightning Rod
EVs: 252 HP / 112 Atk / 112 SpD / 32 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Shadow Bone
- Flare Blitz
- Earthquake
- Toxic

This guy is my hard-hitter and I've used him for Celesteela. Flare Blitz knocks his HP down without giving him a chance to recover. Magnezone can also deal with Celesteela because of Magnet Pull if needed. He is also amazing for Tapu Koko and Xurkitree. It can also take a hit from Kartana and deal a lot back.

Pretty Mermaid (Tapu Lele) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psychic
- Moonblast
- Psyshock
- Hidden Power [Fire]

Tapu Lele has been essential for revenge killing. The psychic terrain boosts the psychic moves to a crazy level and with scarf I can even outspeed Garchomp and one-shot. I use this one to deal with a lot of the threats my others couldn't handle quick enough. It takes down a surprising number of dangerous mons with just Psychic.

Hail Satan (Mimikyu) (F) @ Lum Berry / Fairinium Z
Ability: Disguise
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Shadow Claw
- Play Rough
- Wood Hammer / Shadow Sneak

Disguise has also saved me a number of times. I have also used this with Fairinium Z (did I spell that right?) and Ghostnium Z. I found that I used the Fairy Z move much more often and it worked well too.

Entry hazards are very useful in a fast-paced format like this, the only one recommended with stealth rock, go with ice shard or instead.

Sorry I don't think I understand your reply! Are you saying it is better to go stealth rock than toxic spikes?
And Ice Shard.. do you think it would be better to replace Shell Smash with Ice Shard?

I'm pretty sure I've battled you several times while I was laddering haha.

Anyway, entry hazards aren't really a thing so you should drop Rapid Spin and run Ice Shard in its place for priority and Cloyster wants to run Rock Blast for better coverage so use that instead of Toxic Spikes. Basically, if you have Shell Smash on there's just no room for utility such as entry hazards.

And here's a cool replay of Weakness Policy Agility Dragonite. This thing is legit.

Haha yeah I did battle you! I changed my team just because of that Porygon2 agh! That bulk I hated it haha. Your Arcanine was also terrifying. It can run Wild Charge, Flare Blitz, and Earthquake... all of which are a weakness to some members of my team.

That Dragonite looks awesome. I don't think I got to see you play it. Really nice there after Agility. I love weakness policy, it's such a great item.

So I previously had Alolan Muk in the Cloyster slot. I used it to counter a lot of the Porygon2 Eviolite and the Z-Conversion and Baton Pass spam. I saw a lot of that. So Muk was there and basically had everything to take it down. I did not run Taunt because it was too slow to catch the status moves in the first place. So I opted for Clear Smog and Knock Off instead. Do you think the Alolan Muk or the Cloyster should be there? I've been debating. Because the game is too fast paced for entry hazards to do a lot of good as far as I've seen. The only one that was really good that I saw was Nihilego if it got off toxic spikes AND stealth rocks.

But to be honest hazards haven't been a problem for me so maybe rapid spin isn't the way to go. Maybe put Muk back in? D: I am very conflicted.

its not a phase (Muk-Alola) (F) @ Black Sludge
Ability: Poison Touch
EVs: 252 HP / 108 Atk / 148 SpD
Brave Nature
- Poison Jab
- Clear Smog
- Knock Off
- Shadow Sneak

Icium Z is an interesting idea on Gyara, however I feel it's not as good as either Waterium Z or Lum Berry.

Toxic Spikes and Rapid Spin are useless on Cloyster, especially Rapid Spin. However i'm confused at why you ditched Nihilego as a T Spikes setter because it's "too slow" but you use Cloyster instead..... Just use Shell Smash + 3 attacks.

Magnezone looks fine but could you elaborate on what the speed is for?

I'm also wondering what Marowak's EVs do. Toxic is interesting but seems worse than Will-O-Wisp

Lele looks fine but you want Timid on a scarf set so you can outspeed Jolly Gyarados (the one you fought in that replay was obviously Adamant which is a poor choice by your opponent) and Pheromosa.

Like i say to everyone picking up this metagame and building their first team; you need something to break through Porygon2! Otherwise it just sits there and spams Recover until you lose. Toxic Marowak could work but a lot of P2 are using Shadow Ball...

Finally, and I don't mean to sound too harsh, but a replay from the 1100s doesn't really show us much. You could have set up a Shell Smash with Cloyster and won but you a) didn't, and b) don't have Rock Blast, and if your opponent was using Jolly Gyarados they also would have won...

Yeah, I subbed the Dragonite in later; not really sure what I had on that slot before replacing it though. However, I DO remember that Muk and I'm not even sure if I beat it because Muk gives my team a lot of trouble. And I resorted to the cancerous Minimize Unaware Clefable to counter Porygon-Z so I totally understand you, althought I haven't seen much Baton Pass... in fact, I don't think I've seen baton pass at all.

Anyways, I don't see why you couldn't run both. I mean, Muk and Magnezone both cover and are threatened by pretty much the same things, aren't they? So I'd personally ditch Magnezone and run A-Muk instead, but that's up to you.

Thanks so much for the feedback! I just couldn't consistently get Toxic Spikes and Stealth Rock off both. But you guys are right, Cloyster isn't the better choice there if I'm looking for hazard setter.

Hmm... That's bad on my part. I think I kept that speed thinking about Mega-Scizor or something. No Megas in this format. Add the rest to HP? I also forgot to mention the speed on the Marowak was to outspeed Clefable. I saw quite a few of those. Edit: The Toxic was because I hate Will-O-Wisp because it misses very often... I have a grudge against it after it missed so many times in-game.

I calculated Jolly Gyarados and it's max speed is 287. My Tapu Lele has 289 speed with max EVs. Since Choice Scarf is +50% speed, which is the same as one Dragon Dance, I believe that means I can still outspeed it. I have not been outsped by a Gyarados yet while playing. Is this correct? You are right though I do not outspeed Pheromosa with Modest Tapu. I can change it to Timid for that.

Yes I definitely need a solid counter to Porygon2. Do you have any better suggestions for one? I did find that the Alolan-Muk I posted up there worked pretty well as a Porygon2 counter. I will probably replace Cloyster with it.

I know that's really low on the ladder, it's okay I don't take that in a bad way. I am new to Smogon so I have a lot of work to do for building competitive teams. And navigating Showdown is new for me too. I am not the best pokemon player! But hopefully this will be a good learning process and I can get better.

Ahh I see. I have seen some Z-Conversion Baton Passing, and also Smeargle Baton passing. Now that I think of it, Taunt would be better than Clear Smog so I can disable Porygon2's recover.

I will probably take out Cloyster and put Muk back in. Cloyster didn't seem to have a lot of synergy. And Muk is taking that Poison for Tapu Lele now. Alolan Marowak has been better at dealing with Celesteela than Magnezone... So it seems as though he is now outclassed in his role.

Scarf Modest Tapu Lele actually hits 220, assuming a max Speed IV, while +1 Jolly Gyarados hits 219 (they both get a boost of 73), so Modest Scarf does technically outrun Jolly Gyarados. ofc Pheromosa is dangerous so Timid is still better

yeah lol I just realised why i was thinking this. I was using HP Fire on PS and they hadn't added bottle caps / hyper training so I didn't want to speed tie with jolly Gyara, guess I just had "timid Lele outspeeds jolly Gyara" stuck in my head haha.

but beating all phero is the important part so focus on that ;)

I could be asking too much for a single mon, but I've been thinking of a Pokemon that could revenge kill most of the fast top threats (particularly Garchomp, +1 Gyarados, Pheromosa and the Tapus) in this tournament, and I prepared this Gengar set in my game:

Gengar @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Cursed Body
EVs: 60 HP / 252 SpA / 196 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Wave Sludge Bomb
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power Ice

Max Special Attack EVs for obvious reasons, while 196 Speed EVs outspeed Max Speed Garchomp (the fastest relevant thing you may find with boosted Speed -and that Gengar can beat, sorry Nihilego-), and all leftover EVs are put on HP.

The reasoning here is that Sludge Wave Sludge Bomb OHKOes all Tapus bar Fini (and Lele has a low chance of surviving), which cannot OHKO Gengar anyways (Wave over Bomb because Bomb has a minor chance of not OHKOing Lele), Shadow Ball often OHKOes Pheromosa and (always) Kartana and is a very spammable STAB given the scarce amount of resists while Thunderbolt deals with Gyarados and can 2HKO not specially-bulky Celesteela. Hidden Power Ice is mostly for a certain Dragon/Ground-type Pokemon, whereas Focus Blast seems unnecessary with so few Dark-types, let alone viable ones (I mean, the most common one you are going to find is Alolan Muk, and it's not weak to Focus Blast).

My only complaint is this:

252 SpA Gengar Hidden Power Ice vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 156-188 (84.7 - 102.1%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO

Not exactly a very promising OHKO chance considering I wanted HP Ice mostly to deal with Garchomp, but this is the closest thing to what I want AFAIK (I considered Pheromosa but Poison Jab is not as good as Gengar's Sludge Wave Sludge Bomb, even with a positive nature - this is without mentioning its much less spammable STABs).

Is there any other alternative or should I stick with this?

EDIT: My bad, assumed Sludge Wave was a TM move for Gengar but isn't for some reason. Sludge Bomb is the move then.

Max Special Attack EVs for obvious reasons, while 196 Speed EVs outspeed Max Speed Garchomp (the fastest relevant thing you may find with boosted Speed -and that Gengar can beat, sorry Nihilego-), and all leftover EVs are put on HP.

The reasoning here is that Sludge Wave OHKOes all Tapus bar Fini, which cannot OHKO Gengar anyways (Wave over Bomb because Bomb has a minor chance of not OHKOing Lele), Shadow Ball often OHKOes Pheromosa and (always) Kartana and is a very spammable STAB given the scarce amount of resists while Thunderbolt deals with Gyarados and can 2HKO not specially-bulky Celesteela. Hidden Power Ice is mostly for a certain Dragon/Ground-type Pokemon, whereas Focus Blast seems unnecessary with so few Dark-types, let alone viable ones.

My only complaint is this:

252 SpA Gengar Hidden Power Ice vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 156-188 (84.7 - 102.1%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO

Not exactly a very promising OHKO chance considering I wanted HP Ice mostly to deal with Garchomp, but this is the closest thing to what I want AFAIK (I considered Pheromosa but Poison Jab is not as good as Gengar's Sludge Wave, even with a positive nature - this is without mentioning its much less spammable STABs).

Is there any other alternative or should I stick with this?

It looks like you'll still have trouble with Tapu Fini. Unless it's weakened you can only 2HKO it.

252 SpA Gengar Sludge Bomb vs. 244 HP / 0 SpD Tapu Fini: 126-150 (71.5 - 85.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

All my calcs said you can one-shot the rest of the tapus, gyarados, and almost garchomp. This is actually really smart though because Gengar has that poison STAB which is really useful with all the Tapu spam. I think this pokemon would still be great even if it can't one-shot ALL the threats. But it's got a good deal of them out.

EDIT: My bad, assumed Sludge Wave was a TM move for Gengar but isn't for some reason. Sludge Bomb is the move then.
I've been running Scarf Gengar myself somewhat successfully (#14 in the ladder rn) so I feel I'm qualified to answer you. First off, you want to run Modest over Timid. You're one point above scarf Lele, which is incredibly common, and I've rarely ever seen ScarfChomp so your worry is unwarranted, honestly, and in the off chance that you run into one of those you can always switch out to something else, which is what I'd tell you to do since HP is an incredibly bad move to lock yourself into. Modest nets you a KO on Tapu Lele regardless of whether you choose Sludge Bomb or Shadow Ball, so if your opponent has a steel type on the back of their team you're not forced to lock yourself into a poison-type move and you still put a dent into whatever switches in. Furthermore, I personally like to run Destiny Bond over HP Ice. It's a big gamble, but it allows you to remove A-Muk in a pinch and even the unsuspecting Porygon2/Z if you're lucky enough ( admittedly though, I rarely manage to pull this off, but I've never felt the need to use HP Ice either whereas I've actually regretted not having Destiny Bond at some point when I replaced it for something else).

Just my two cents and I hope it helps.

Good to know someone has been using something similar (I was actually thinking it was quite gimmicky).

For some reason I never realized Modest Gengar was 1 point above Timid Lele, thanks for enlightening me, I'll go and try to breed one in time tomorrow :P

I tried running Scarf Gengar after seeing the post and I really love him. No one expects it, its the dark horse of the team. However I am having trouble finding good team mates with synergy for him. Any suggestions? You have much more experience than me.

Porygon2 pairs up exceedingly well with it since it can switch directly into most things that threaten it without much trouble ( Garchomp & Mimikyu for example )

Porygon2 @ Eviolite
Ability: Download
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shadow Ball/Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
- Recover
- Toxic

This is the set I'm using. You can run Ice Beam for Garchomp instead, but I prefer Shadow Ball so I can switch Porygon into and score the 2HKO on Mimikyu before it gets to +6 and 2HKO my Porygon2 instead with Play Rough. Plus, the SpD drop can come in clutch sometimes.

Any way to stop annoy glalie moody ?\
I can't do any thing about it
Unaware Clefable is an option, but you gotta hope Sheer Cold doesn't hit. Tapu Fini also shuts it down, but Sheer Cold is an issue still.
Honestly, though? Nuke it as hard and as fast as you possibly can. Firium-Z Arcanine has been my most reliable answer to it.
