Alphabet Cup

(AKA AlphabetMons or ABC)

What's in a name? In this metagame, quite a lot. The idea is simple: A Pokemon can learn any move if it shares the first letter in its name. For example, Venusaur can learn V-Create, Absol can learn Air Slash, and Regigigas can learn Recover. It's a very simple premise, and depending on the Pokemon, it can grant tremendous power, or if your name begins with Y... you only get Yawn. There are a few conditions to consider in this metagame:

  • There is a one-Pokemon limit per letter. You cannot have both an Absol and an Ampharos, for example.

  • The English names of Pokemon and moves are to be used. This is because without this rule, every Pokemon gets ridiculous increases to their movesets and the meta becomes too confusing

  • Nicknames do not allow you to access different moves. If you call an Unown "jrm115", it can't learn Jump Kick, but it can learn U-Turn

  • You cannot inherit moves from previous evolutions. You can have an Ice Beam Ivysaur, but not an Ice Beam Venusaur

  • Z-Moves cannot be placed in a moveset. You can have Giga Impact in your moveslot and Normalium Z will work normally, but you cannot have Breakneck Blitz. That would run into all sorts of logistical issues with base powers and held items, etc. that I really don’t feel like dealing with

  • The Pokemon can still use its original moveset, along with any new moves it inherits. Xurkitree is not restricted to X-Scissor alone!

  • Pokemon that can mega-evolve do NOT have access to M moves in addition to their standard letter moves (as the simulator calls them X-Mega) All other Pokemon with changeable Formes follows this rule, they get their species name's first letter only (except Skymin but that’s just coincidence)
  • Standard OU Banlist and clauses apply: species clause (obviously), OHKO clause, evasion clause, Moody clause, sleep clause, etc.
Preliminary Banlist;

On top of the standard OU Banlist, the following moves are banned unless the Pokemon learns them naturally:

  • Sketch (to prevent the metagame becoming overcentralised on Sketch. Over 100 Pokemon begin with the letter S, which is a vast portion of the game-- and SketchMons is an OM already).

  • Shell Smash (Even with only 1 abuser per team, shell smash allows many mons to become entirely dominant in 1 turn. There are many abusers, from Scizor to Salamence, Unburden Sceptile to Simple Swoobat, so it’s more feasible to ban the move instead of any 1 individual mon like what happened last gen with Swoobat itself.)
  • Geomancy (There are multiple viable users, but what really brought Geomancy over the edge was Greninja. Greninja is already fast and a strong special attacker, and Geomancy made it able to OHKO or 2HKO about every viable threat. Water Shuriken let it somewhat get around priority revenge killing, especially Sucker Punch, and its native dark typing made it immune to the tier's de facto panic button, Prankster Thundurus' Topsy Turvy. The combination of offensive presence and avoiding the conventional counters for similar sets would be unhealthy for the meta if left untreated. In addition, Geomancy was banned over Greninja because of other remaining abusers, such as Gengar, and because I didn't want to ban innocent Greninjas expanding their protean coverage options.)

Everything else is fair game for now!

For reference, here is:

A list of Pokemon in alphabetical order

A list of moves (click "Name" to sort the list alphabetically)

Both of these lists are courtesy of Bulbapedia.

If you see something that seems super busted, post about it! I’m willing to listen to any complaint about how terrible the metagame is.

Shoutouts to Martingale and Joim for creating, running, and/or writing most of the original post of this metagame last gen.

Have fun folks!

Geomancy ashninja is looking like it'll become the best special sweeper because it's immune to prankster topsy turvy from thundurus. We'll have to see if that ends up busted.

No it's moves only, and that 'counter' dies after any chip or hazards at all, costs the s slot, and also special sawk LOL

tailglow tapu fini, anyone?

also Heatran now has Heal Order, Healing Wish and Happy Hour. Eww.

Jirachi, Jolteon, Medicham-Mega, Marowak, Mega Mawile, Metagross, Mimikyu and Alolan Muk have customisable coverage in Judgment or Multi Attack so lol

I wonder how a special mega ttar would do with tail glow, tbolt flamethrower, rock polish maybe even mix with stone edge
also trick or treat for super effective crunch /d pulse sounds cool

A big thing that this gen introduced to this metagame are the potential for z-moves. Such as z-conversion, z-trick-or-treat, etc. just a random example but something like this could be interesting.
Cobalion @ Normalium Z
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Conversion
- Clanging Scales
- Focus Blast
- Flash Cannon
Just threw a quick example together, but this turns cobalion into a steel/dragon type (I think?) with solid speed, bulk and packs a fair punch. Could also run close combat to break through fat special walls. Im sure there are better mons who could run the omni boosting z-moves, something like crawdaunt seems cool with adaptability, but its so slow.

Some sets that seem they can be fun:

Serperior @ Leftovers
Ability: Contrary
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Leaf Storm
- Steam Eruption
- Secret Sword
- Spore

Spore to put something to sleep, Leaf Storm as STAB + increasment, Steam Eruption for Fire-type Pokemon and Secret Sword to defeat Chansey and Steel-types.

Salamence @ Dragonium Z / Flynium Z / Life Orb
Ability: Moxie / Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Shift Gear
- Sacred Fire
- Spectral Thief
- Outrage / Fly

Shift Gear is like Dragon Dance, except you outspeed after that most of the scarfers. Z-Outrage or Z-Fly to destroy some wall, Sacred Fire as coverage, and Spectral Thief to steal defensive boosts (or even better, attacking boosts) before dealing damage.

Swampert @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP / 232 Def / 24 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Sticky Web
- Spikes
- Stealth Rock / Slack Off / Strength Sap
- Scald

Did you notice that all hazards start with S (bar TSpikes)? So every Pokemon starting with S can be a great SR setter!

Tapu Bulu @ Life Orb
Ability: Grassy Surge
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Thousand Arrows
- Trop Kick / Horn Leech
- Megahorn

Thousand Arrows allows it to hit not only Flying-types, but even Skarmory and Celesteela!

Quagsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Quiver Dance
- Scald
- Recover
- Earth Power

Gets SpD and SpA boosts, ignores opponent's Attack and Defense boosts.

Thundurus (M) @ Chill Drive
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Topsy-Turvy
- Tail Glow
- Thunderbolt
- Techno Blast

Topsy-Turvy allows it to stop set-up sweepers. Tail Glow is the best boosting move in the game. Ice-type Techno Blast is a cool coverage for mons like Thundurus.

Goodra @ Power Herb
Ability: Sap Sipper
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Geomancy
- Dragon Pulse
- Thunderbolt
- Flamethrower

Except Ashninja, this thing can set up Geomancy. Further, it's not frail as Greninja.

Klefki @ Light Clay
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Spikes
- Reflect
- Light Screen
- King's Shield

King's Shield for days!

And our MVP....
Magikarp @ Magikarpium-Z
Ability: Wonder Guard
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Magikarp's Revenge
- Malicious Moonsault
- Paleo Wave
- Splash

Now Magikarp has access to its supposed signature move! It's so godly that it gets access to Z-Moves directly, CAP moves. Finally, we have the godly move, Splash.
(Btw just joking, don't take this seriously, apologies for anyone that fell for this too hard.)

Several of my sets were stolen already >:(

Here's some more!
Scizor @ Scizorite
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Spore
- Shift Gear
- Sunsteel Strike
- Storm Throw

Scizor gets all of Spore, Shift Gear, Sunsteel Strike, and Technician Storm Throw for coverage. Really strong.

Registeel @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Rapid Spin
- Recover
- Revelation Dance / Iron Head
- Roar

Registeel gets Recovery, Hazard Removal, and Phazing. Not bad. It also gets Revelation Dance if you feel like it, but its not really notable.
Excadrill @ Life Orb
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Extreme Speed
- Earthquake
- Iron Head

Excadrill boasts the highest attack stat of any E mon, meaning its the strongest new Espeeder (unless STAB makes Exploud stronger? Don't use Exploud.)
Bisharp @ Life Orb
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Belly Drum
- Bullet Punch
- Sucker Punch
- Bonemerang / Iron Head / Bolt Strike

Belly Drum is banned in most move metas for a reason. Here Steel types get that + Bullet Punch. Bisharp seems p good.
Serperior @ Leftovers
Ability: Contrary
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Leaf Storm
- Steam Eruption
- Secret Sword
- Spore
I'd definitely slash in Searing Shot, and possibly Superpower as well.

EDIT: ALSO ban Geomancy and Shift Gear there's really no question they'll be broken. Probably Belly Drum too. I'd rather not have to run Topsy Thundurus + a Greninja counter(??) on every team just to check Geomancy users.

stal??? (Tapu Lele) @ Twisted Spoon / Burn Drive / Psychium Z / Fightinium
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Taunt
- Tail Glow
- Psyshock
- Moonblast / Techno Blast / Focus Blast

Stallbreaker Lele, now nuclear.

ps please ban Shift Gear, Scizor/Salamence are outrageously good especially with Spore

Funbot28

Banned deucer.
Shit this is actually a real thing now. Anyways got some heat theorymon coming through:

Scizor-Mega @ Scizorite
Ability: Swarm
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly / Adamant Nature
- Shift Gear
- Sunsteel Strike / Bullet Punch
- Storm Throw / Sacred Fire
- Knock Off / Bug Bite / Roost

Turns Mega Scizor into a much better setup sweeper with Shift Gear since it can now actually threaten offense without needing to rely on priority to do so. Storm Throw is a nifty coverage option since it not only gains the Technician boost, but also always results in a critical hit alongside hitting Steel and Water-types that would try and wall you. Sacred Fire can be used instead to spread burns and hit stuff like Ferrothorn and Celesteela harder.

Gengar @ Power Herb
Ability: Cursed Body
EVs: 80 Def / 252 SpA / 176 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Geomancy
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Wave
- Focus Blast

Probably the best abuser of Geomancy after Ash-Ninja thanks to its already great Special Attack that gets boosted to insane levels alongside great neutral coverage with its STABs + Fighting-type coverage. You can invest in Defense since it outspeeds practically everything after a boost. Beware of priority though.

Lopunny-Mega @ Lopunnite
Ability: Scrappy
Happiness: 0
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Lovely Kiss
- High Jump Kick
- Frustration
- Power-Up Punch

Old STABmons Mega Lopp but a bit weaker due to no access to Espeed + Swords Dance. However, it can still punish most swithchins with Lovely Kiss and proceed to wallbreak or sweep thanks to its nice STABs + high Speed.

Thundurus (M) @ Chill Drive
Ability: Prankster
Happiness: 0
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Tail Glow
- Topsy-Turvy
- Thunderbolt
- Techno Blast

I can see this thing becoming really annoying to deal with. Not only can it boost its Special Attack to +3 in one turn but can also prevent opposing setup via Prankster Topsy-turvy. Chill Drive Techno Blast also provides it a powerful Ice-type coverage option that gives it the blessed BoltBeam coverage. Yeh I wonder what can stop this thing opposed from faster stuff like Ash-Gren, Tapu Koko, and Mega Lopp.

Magearna @ Leftovers / Fightinium Z / Electrium Z
Ability: Soul-Heart
Happiness: 0
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shift Gear
- Calm Mind
- Moonblast / Ice Beam
- Magma Storm
/ Focus Blast / Thunderbolt

Standard OU Magearna but with access to a more consistent Fairy-type STAB move and cool coverage options such as Magma Storm and even stuff like Moongeist Beam
and recovery in Milk Drink. Tbh this thing even becomes more scarier then it is in standard due to its already flexible options becoming even more customizable.

Scolipede @ Focus Sash
Ability: Speed Boost
- Protect
- Spore
- Sticky Web
- Stealth Rock

Im almost sure this thing will get near 100% lead usage in 200 ladder ratings.
I might be wrong, but its speed and ability to Spore the oponent.
If the oponent goes for rocks turn 1, Scolipede puts him to sleep, then sets Sticy Web
on switch. Then oponent hits while he sets rocks, loosing the sash. Then you switch out,
so you can put any other thing to sleep. Meta-game defining, at least.

Probably outclassed by sableye with prankster, but has the niche of sleeping dark types. Webs offense in general looks fun!

Don't forget Sableye can mega evolve, giving it the niche of being the only S mon with magic bounce. Sawk (with safety goggles, probably) also might have a niche as the only S mon with mold breaker, allowing it to set hazards against opposing Mega Sableye.

Finaly a meta where Safety Goggles are usefull.

here are some things:

Water shuriken and Wish Wishiwashi (it already gets protect). Another meta-specific gimmicky priority attacker
Milk Drink Mudsdale. ew.
DD Darmanitan. it also gets diamond storm as an upgrade in damage from rock slide, even being more accurate
Volt Switch and Vacuum Wave make specs/scarf Volcarona a thing (or maybe not, but it's like my mascot so...)
Happy Hour Hoopa-U complete with HJK.
Pyukumuku has Parting Shot so it now has the nice of the slowest pivot in the game. It's still taunt bait tho.

might come up with some others later

Venusaur-Mega @ Venusaurite
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- V-Create
- Power Whip
- Swords Dance
- Outrage / Earthquake

252+ Atk Venusaur-Mega V-create vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Scizor-Mega: 408-484 (118.9 - 141.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Venusaur-Mega V-create vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Ferrothorn: 428-504 (121.5 - 143.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Venusaur-Mega V-create vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Celesteela: 254-300 (63.8 - 75.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

I know this is probably really stupid and formatted incorrectly, but I just thought physically-offensive Mega Venusaur sounded kind of funny.

Other things:
Manaphy gets Magma Storm, Moonblast, Moongeist Beam
Chansey gets Conversion / Conversion 2, Cotton Guard, Core Enforcer to be even more annoying (and Blissey gets STAB Boomburst lol)
Shedinja gets Spore and Spirit Shackle...umm
Pokemon that start with S can set Spikes and Stealth Rock...make way for hazard setters Sableye and Slowbro (and their Megas maybe)
