[SET COMMENTS]

With NU's premier walls mostly being physically defensive, SpecsTaria is here to punish the tier for its lack of Steel-types and dedicated special walls. With just Draco Meteor and Dragon Pulse, Altaria is already wielding virtually unresisted coverage under its fluffy wings, and with the addition of Fire Blast it can hit every single Pokemon in NU for at least neutral damage. Even with an unimpressive base 70 Special Attack stat, Choice Specs makes Altaria deceptively strong and very difficult to switch into, while Altaria itself is capable of switching in many times thanks to its excellent Dragon / Flying typing and well-rounded 75 / 90 / 105 base defenses. Another key trait of this set is its surprise factor, as many opponents will switch their Tangela, Weezing, or Quagsire into Altaria expecting a Dragon Dance, only to be obliterated by Draco Meteor. Those three Pokemon aren't the only ones that SpecsTaria can safely switch into, as its bulk and typing lets it come in on a myriad of threats, such as Gurdurr, Duosion, Exeggutor, Sawk, Magmortar, Misdreavus, Samurott, Torterra, Vileplume, Garbodor, and many more, to unleash a powerful Draco Meteor, crippling or even OHKOing them.

SpecsTaria's ability to not only lure in and beat its usual counters in one move, but countering them, ridding the field of the physical walls who might plague your teammates, and tearing teams apart in general, is why this set works wonders. However, not everything is fun and rainbows for our fellow Chinese bird of legend, as there are a couple of things that cloud its path to victory. Stealth Rock for one is easy to set up due to NU's lack of reliable Rapid Spin users and hampers Altaria's ability to continuously switch in. While its typing is generally brilliant, it leaves Altaria open to the common Rock- and Ice-type attacks thrown around in NU. Despite these shortcomings, SpecsTaria can still soar through the skies of NU with the proper support; a Rapid Spin user such as Cryogonal, or a Rock- and Ice-type resistor such as Probopass (who can use Stealth Rock) can aid Altaria in its quest for cloudy destruction. To showcase just how strong SpecsTaria is, here are some damage calculations to demonstrate its power:

Draco Meteor vs. 252/4 Tangela 101.5% - 119.5%

Draco Meteor vs. 252/4 Weezing 100% - 118%

Draco Meteor vs. 252/4 Quagsire 89.5% - 105.8%

Draco Meteor vs. 4/0 Samurott 101.2% - 119.3%

Draco Meteor vs. 252/0 Eviolite Gurdurr 77.3% - 91.4%

Draco Meteor vs. 252/4 Regirock 68.7% - 81%

Fire Blast vs. 132/0 Exeggutor 112.1% - 131.9%

Fire Blast vs. 252/0 Vileplume 88.7% - 104.5%

Fire Blast vs. 252/4 Eviolite Metang 71% - 84%

Hidden Power Ground vs. 252/252+ Probopass 55.6% - 66.7%

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EV spread allows Altaria to hit as hard as possible and be able to tank hits very well while dishing them out. Altaria can use Rest to restore its HP and status, which enables it to switch in and out, bombing the opposing field with Draco Meteor repeatedly even if Stealth Rock is up. Rest works extremely well in conjunction with Altaria's Natural Cure ability, which cures its sleep status upon switching out. 64 Speed EVs allow Altaria to outspeed Adamant Torterra, whose attacks—bar Stone Edge—are all ineffective against Altaria, and unleash a Fire Blast to roast it. Alternatively, Altaria can use Ice Beam instead of Dragon Pulse or Hidden Power Ground for Pokemon such as Torterra and Drifblim, and is useful when you need a powerful attack that doesn't cut Altaria's Special Attack.

SpecsTaria absolutely loves entry hazard support, as with a little extra damage, Altaria can secure a KO on foes that would survive the hit otherwise, such as Regirock, Gurdurr, and Quagsire. Rock-type Pokemon such as Golem, Gigalith, Regirock, Probopass, and Bastiodon synergize well with Altaria and can set up Stealth Rock to assist it. If using Dragon Pulse instead of Hidden Power Ground SpecsTaria will be walled easily by Probopass, Bastiodon, and Lairon. Therefore pairing it up with Golem or Marowak is recommended, as they defeat the aforementioned Pokemon and also supply Altaria with Stealth Rock support. Garbodor can provide both Spikes and Toxic Spikes and can even help take down Altaria's counters. Another plus is that Altaria can switch into the Ground- and Psychic-type moves aimed at Garbodor and retaliate with Draco Meteor. The Pokemon that can take on SpecsTaria, such as Lickilicky, Hypno, Cradily, and Gardevoir, are easily beat by Absol and Choice Band Torterra. Both Pokemon are very powerful in their own right, and together with SpecsTaria they can blast holes in the opponent's team easily.
