[Anything Goes] Deoxys-Attack [QC 0/3]

[Overview]

  • Deoxys Attack is a potent lead due to its ability to check many other leads with its versatile move pool, high speed and monstrous offensive stats
  • Low Hp and microscopic defensive stats ensures that it does not care about the attack/special attack boosts from offensive sweepers in meta when equipped with Focus Sash
  • Vast offensive move pool combined with massive offensive stats allows for it to check almost every single offensive threat in meta with neutral or super effective attacks - thus making it a great sweeper check. Also helps it to wallbreak effectively, landing critical KOs or OHKOs on defensive Pokemon even without move boosting items
  • Access to Extreme Speed allows it to check faster or boosted threats to a certain degree
  • Also functions as an offensive sweeper due to its inheritantly high speed and offensive stats, albeit one that needs to switch out often to reset stat changes.
  • Builds up offensive pressure for your team, especially when added to other sweepers/wallbreakers or itself
  • Severely hindered in all of its roles by low defences and requires defog support in order to carry out most of its roles
  • Is very weak to priority or Scarfed/Faster threats when not at full health with focus sash
  • However, even after taking into account all of its weaknesses, Deoxys-Attack remains a intimidating foe to face in AG no matter what role it takes
[Set ]

name: Mixed All-out-Attacker
move 1: Psycho Boost
move 2: Superpower/Low Kick
move 3: extreme speed
move 4: ice beam/knock off/Poison Jab
item: Focus Sash
ability: Pressure
nature: Rash/Naive
evs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

  • Psycho Boost is the go-to move for most cases, whether it is breaking walls or knocking out offensive threats. Its typing ensures that only dark is immune to it and the majority of the meta takes it neutrally. Due to its high power (140), it can be used to either 2HKO or OHKO almost every single Pokemon in the meta that does not resist or is immune to it
  • Superpower is for dark/steel type coverage which hits top threats such as darkrai for a guaranteed OHKO
  • Low kick could potentially be used instead of superpower because it does not cause any attack drops and still hits the majority of the meta (including all arceus forms) for 120 power (however it is worth noting that it does not always OHKO darkrai even with maximum attack investment)
  • Extreme speed is a powerful physical move used to revenge kill weakened Pokemon without needing to worry about stat drops and boosted speeds
  • Ice beam can be utilized to check threats such as Yveltal, who in its defensive form would completely wall Deoxys-Attack and Mega Rayquaza for guaranteed 2HKOs
  • On the other hand, Knock Off could be used instead to land a guaranteed OHKO on offensive Mewtwos or Espeons and 2HKO Mega Mewtwo-Y and Mew. It is also useful against defensive walls such as Lugia and Giratina who need their item to function better, and works well against top threats such as Ho-oh simply because they lose their item and do not take too much damage from Psycho Boost due to their high special defence.
  • Another viable alternative is to run Poison Jab, which checks the ubiquitous Xerneas in the meta fairly well for a secure 2HKO as it ignores special defense boosts and has a high poison chance
Set Details
========

  • 252 SpA is invested to make Psycho Boost/Ice Beam hit as hard as possible.
  • Reason for only 4 Atk is because giving 252 Atk does not land any extra OHKOs and usually the only move used during deoxys' short battle presence is Psycho Boost.
  • Ultimately, it is a matter of choice but it is usually recommended to run 252 SpA because it makes a greater difference in overall damage dealt.
  • 252 Spe with Rash/Naive helps it reach 399 Spe, which lets it out speed every single unboosted offensive threat short of Mega Mewtwo Y and faster variants of itself.
  • The reason for not running a faster nature (which would put Deoxys-Attack at 428 Spe) is because that would only do it 3 small favours. Firstly, it would allow it to outspeed Mega Mewtwo Y, which requires a 2HKO in most cases anyways (Use Extreme Speed next turn after Knock off). Secondly it would allow it to speed tie with itself. However, not only is this strategy somewhat unreliable, but both Deoxys-A and Mega Mewtwo Y are not seen too commonly in Anything Goes. Lastly, it would allow it to outspeed a few extra scarfed pokemon that did not max their speed. These advantages are somewhat small compared to the difference of having extra SpA/Atk for every move yet once again it is a matter of choice whether to run a speed boosting nature or an offensive stat boosting nature.
  • Focus Sash is the only recommended item in this set because due to the Multiple Species Clause and the Mega Rayquaza clause, priority move carriers such as the "Extreme Killer Arceus" (offensive arceus running extreme speed) and Mega Rayquaza are extremely common in the meta. Since all of Deoxys-Attack's strong moves are at priority 0, it is hard to justify running life orb for the extra 30% power when a focus sash can allow you to net extra KOs due to the fact you can almost always use two moves instead.

Usage Tips
========

  • Deoxys-Attack should preferably be used in the beginning of the match due to the hassle of removing entry hazards later in the game.
  • Another reason is since it will be switching in and out the game due to its stat drops, it is better to start it early to get more damage opportunities.
  • Many teams are woefully unprepared for an offensive Deoxys-Attack lead as not many pokemon can switch into its moves.
  • When Stealth rocks are up, it is best to not send it in as it would break its sash and leave it vulnerable to faster/priority attacks.
  • Sending it in against pokemon that have massively boosted offensive stats is also advisable as it almost always lives 2 hits thanks to Focus Sash and usually eliminates the threat before that point.
  • Lastly, when seeing any weakened Pokemon (Withing KO range of any of your moves), do not hesitate to send it in to net a quick revenge kill.
Team Options

========

  • Pokemon that deal with stealth rocks such as defoggers/rapid spinners/magic bouncers (Mega Diance, Arceus Water, Skarmory) are almost mandatory for Deoxys-Attack teams due to its dislike of any chip damage.
  • Pokemon who reflect status moves such as Mega Diance are also greatly appreciated as they deal with Swag Key, which would otherwise reliably win a 1v1 trade against Deoxys-Attack
  • Offensive sweepers such as Ekiller, GeoXern or Dragon Dance Mega Rayquaza benefit greatly from Deoxys Attack as it usually severely cripples or eliminates the walls that usually prevent it from sweeping
  • Lastly, since this is Anything Goes, having multiple Deoxys-Attack in a team is also viable as they produce huge pressure for almost all teams due to the abilities to run multiple roles that break through almost all team compositions all by themselves
  • Answers to Mega Sableye such as Mega Diancie, Fairy Arceus, and Primal Groudon are important, as Mega Sableye utterly walls this set
  • Physical walls such as Lugia, Yveltal, and Skarmory are useful to check common priority users like Extreme Killer Arceus and Mega Rayquaza

[Set ]

name: Suicide Lead
move 1: Psycho Boost
move 2: Stealth Rocks
move 3: Taunt
move 4: Spikes/Extreme Speed/Knock Off
item: Focus Sash
ability: Pressure
nature: Rash/Naive
evs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

  • This moveset takes advantage of Deoxys-Attack's high speed and offensive stats to hinder slower leads
  • Stealth Rocks is the preferred entry hazard move as it does 25% to Mega Rayquaza and generally consistent damage to other top threats
  • Spikes could however also be used with stealth rock depending on personal preference - It is worth noting however that due to the offensive nature of the meta and Deoxys' non-existant bulk that it is difficult setting up any more than one or two layers of spikes
  • Alternatives to Spikes could be offensive moves such as Extreme Speed or Knock Off, which when used in conjunction with Psycho Boost makes Deoxys-Attack more of an effective anti-lead.
  • Taunt helps to put pressure on early defoggers, set-up attempts and opposing entry hazard setters which often helps to give your team an early advantage
Set Details
========

  • Rash/Naive Nature is used once again to maximize damage from Psycho Boost and optimize Deoxys-Attack's anti-lead abilities.
  • EVs are designed for the same purpose - make Deoxys-Attack hit as hard as it can and outspeed as many threats as it could.
  • Focus Sash is a must in order for Deoxys-Attack to get at least one entry hazard in place before it goes down
Usage Tips
========

  • This set is useful as a lead for offensive or hyper offensive teams as it sets up advantages then conveniently goes down, leaving a nice set up opportunity for any one of AG's powerful sweepers
  • This set is designed so that Deoxys-Attack does its job and goes down, but if it has already set everything up yet is still at full health or at 1 hp with Extreme speed, do not hesitate to call it back as it could be extremely useful at all points of the game as a wallbreaker or revenge killer
  • Taunt also helps Deoxys-Attack to break through some walls that depend on chip damage and recovery spam to win, such as Giratina-A and Lugia. However, be prepared for the occasional dragon tail from the former or the ice beam from the latter.
  • When faced with a magic bouncer such as Espeon,or Mega-Diance , it is better to attempt to eliminate them first with Knock Off or Psycho Boost, then set up hazards safely.
Team Options
========

  • Since this set is usually used right at the start of the battle, there isn't really any specific set or teammate that it needs to function properly
  • However, having a pokemon such as Mega Gengar that likes to puts pressure on the passive defoggers in the meta would be helpful
  • Sweepers such as an Ekiller, GeoXern, or DD M-Ray would also much appreciate having a nice opportunity to set up with rocks on the opponent's side or a taunted phazer opposing them

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • Life Orb Deoxys-Attack has the power to OHKO some Primal Groundons, Xerneas and Arceus forms as well as reliable OHKO Mega Rayquaza. While this is incredibly useful due to the offensive pressure of those S tiered threats, it leaves a huge weakness to priority and therefore requires some degrees of care when employed
  • Depending on the situation, it could be worth it to use a physical all-out-attacker set for Deoxys as it would be free to maximize its attack and deal with specially defensive pokemon such as Ho-oh, Blissey and post Geomancy Xerneas better
  • It could also be worth it to run a more specially orientated set with only extreme speed as the sole physical move as it could allow Deoxys-Attack to run Focus Blast, which has no stat decrease, is not limited by weight and has a chance to OHKO Ferrothorn.
  • Dark Pulse is a consistent move that also has a 20% chance to flinch thanks to Deoxys' massive speed. However it is generally better to use Knock Off instead because of the utility it provides
  • Moves like Thunder and Thunderbolt are also strong but cover less of the meta than Ice beam with no significant increase in OHKO chance on most Pokemon
  • Hp fire could be used to OHKO Ferrothorn and Scizor but is usually outclassed by Focus Blast due to it's higher coverage and requires a speed IV decrease.
  • Magic Coat could be used for some extra utility but is gimmicky to say the best on a ephemeral Pokemon like Deoxys-Attack and is generally outclassed
  • Nasty Plot could be used with a focus sash to provide Deoxys-Attack a truly devastating next hit on any of its special moves. However, as Deoxys-Attack is extremely frail, it is not advisable to run unless one is fully aware of the openings it causes for the opponent.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Klefki**: Due to its defensive typing and stats, it is able to live quite a few of Deoxys-Attack's moves and more importantly, cripple it with statusing moves such as Swagger and Thunder Wave before Deoxys-Attack even makes a move. Deoxys-Attack very rarely is able to overcome a Swag Key for these reasons.

**Scarfed Pokemon**: Pokemon such as Xerneas, Jirachi and Gensect become massive issues for Deoxys-Attack when equipped with a choice scarf. The former not only outspends Deoxys Attack but hits everything else in its team for a big chunk of damage. The last two use flinching moves such as iron head to straight up beat Deoxys-Attack without it even making a substantial move or U-turn out into walls, which eventually wears Deoxys Attack down. Note that they are crippled if they switch into any of Deoxys-Attack's moves or get their scarf knocked off. Additionally, the wall that they switch into with U-turn usually does not appreciate the hit following them.

**Mega Sableye **: Its typing makes it immune to Psycho Boost, Superpower or Extreme Speed. It also has sufficient bulk to tank hits such as knock off or icebeam with relative ease and eventually stall out Deoxys Attack. Magic Bounce prevents Deoxys-Attack from setting up Stealth Rocks or Taunting it. Furthermore, it has prankster on the turn it mega evolves, thus giving it the chance to get a quick burn on Deoxys-Attack before it even attacks.

**Residual Damage**: As Deoxys is extremely fragile, it is usually forced to run focus sash for it to remain significant in a battle where almost every team has at least one extreme speed user. Any chip damage from entry hazards or statusing moves will render it practically useless until the opposing extreme speed user is taken out.

- Extreme Speed is a powerful physical move used to revenge kill weakened Pokemon without needing to worry about stat drops and boosted speeds

- Knock Off is another option that lands guaranteed OHKO on offensive Mewtwo and Espeon as well as a 2HKO on Mega Mewtwo Y and Mew. It is also useful against Pokemon like Lugia, Xerneas and Giratina who need their item to function.
- Another viable alternative is to run Poison Jab, which checks the ubiquitous Xerneas in the meta fairly well for a secure 2HKO as it ignores Special Defense boosts and has a high Poison chance

Set Details
========

- 252 SpA EVs are invested to make Psycho Boost/Ice Beam hit as hard as possible.
- 20 Attack EVs are used because additional investment doesn’t secure any notable KOes
- Ultimately, it is a matter of choice, but it is usually recommended to run 252 SpA because it makes a greater difference in overall damage dealt.
- 236 Spe with Rash/Naive helps it reach 395 Spe, which lets it outspeed every single unboosted offensive threat other than Mega Mewtwo Y and faster variants of itself.
- Focus Sash is the only recommended item in this set because due to the fact that Extreme Killer Arceus and Mega Rayquaza are extremely common in Anything Goes. Since all of Deoxys-Attack's strong moves lack priority, it is hard to justify running Life Orb for the extra 30% power when a Focus Sash can allow you to almost always use two moves instead.

[Team Options]
- Answers to Mega Sableye such as Mega Diancie, Fairy Arceus, and Primal Groudon are important, as Mega Sableye utterly walls this set.
- Magic Bounce teammates such as Mega Diancie and Mega Sableye are also helpful to deal with Klefki, status, and hazards

Moves
========

- Psycho Boost does heavy damage to opposing Pokemon, preventing most Magic Bouncers and Defoggers from switching in.
- Stealth Rock is the preferred entry hazard move as it does 25% to Mega Rayquaza and generally consistent damage to other top threats.
- Spikes is another potential hazard option, but Deoxys-Attack's nonexistent bulk makes it difficult to set up more than one or two layers of Spikes.
- Taunt helps to put pressure on early Defoggers, set-up attempts and opposing entry hazard setters which often helps to give your team an early advantage.
- Knock Off cripples most other leads by removing their items.
- Extreme Speed is an option to get in a bit more chip damage before fainting, potentially bringing the opponent's Pokemon into range of a teammate's attack.

Set Details
========

- 252 Speed EVs and a Speed boosting nature allows Deoxys-Attack to outspeed nearly every relevant Pokemon, only losing to Deoxys-Speed.
- 252 Special Attack EVs maximize the power of Psycho Boost, making Deoxys-Attack that much harder to switch in on.
- 4 Attack EVs provide a little extra power to Knock Off and Extreme Speed
- Focus Sash is a must in order for Deoxys-Attack to get at least one entry hazard in place before it goes down

Usage Tips
========

- This set is useful as a lead for offensive or hyper offensive teams, where it sets up hazards and then gets KOed. This gives its teammates a chance to set up.
- If Deoxys-Attack has already set all the hazards it can and still has HP remaining, do not hesitate to call it back as it could be extremely useful at all points of the game as a wallbreaker or revenge killer.
- However, do not do so if recalling Deoxys-Attack would result in major damage to your team.
- Taunt also helps Deoxys-Attack to break through some walls that depend on chip damage and recovery spam to win, such as Giratina-A and Lugia. However, be prepared for the occasional Dragon Tail from the former or the Ice Beam from the latter.
- When faced with a magic bouncer such as Espeon or Mega-Diancie, it is better to attempt to eliminate them first with Knock Off or Psycho Boost, then set up hazards safely.

Team Options
========

- Since this set is usually used right at the start of the battle, there isn't really any specific set or teammate that it needs to function properly
- However, having a Pokemon such as Mega Gengar or Darkrai that puts pressure on common defoggers would be helpful
- Sweepers such as an Extreme Killer Arceus, Geomancy Xerneas, or Dragon Dance Mega Rayquaza that appreciate hazards and crippled walls also pair well with this set.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

- Life Orb Deoxys-Attack has the power to OHKO some Primal Groudons, Xerneas and Arceus forms as well as reliably OHKO Mega Rayquaza. While this is incredibly useful, it increases Deoxys-Attack's weakness to priority and therefore requires a greater degree of care when employed.
- Depending on the situation, it could be worth it to use a physical all-out-attacker so Deoxys-Attack specially defensive Pokemon such as Ho-oh, Blissey and post-Geomancy Xerneas better
- Skill Swap allows Deoxys-Attack to set hazards on Magic Bounce Pokemon, but this is usually only useful against Mega Sableye.
- It could also be worth it to run a more specially orientated set with extreme speed as the sole physical move, as Deoxys-Attack can then run Focus Blast, which has no stat decrease, is not limited by weight, and has a chance to OHKO Ferrothorn.
- Other coverage moves like Thunder and Thunderbolt are also usable, but they cover less of the meta than Ice Beam with no significant increase in targets
- HP Fire is another option that can be used to OHKO Ferrothorn and Scizor, but it is usually outclassed by Focus Blast due to the latter's higher Base Power.
- Magic Coat is a niche option to bounce back hazards, Taunt, and Status, but Deoxys-Attack's bulk makes this usually a losing proposition.
- Choice Specs is a somewhat gimmicky option that does far more damage, including 2HKOing Mega Sableye, in exchange for an inability to switch moves and no Focus Sash to save Deoxys from a hit.
- Nasty Plot or Swords Dance could be used with a Focus Sash to provide Deoxys-Attack a truly devastating next hit on any of its moves. Since Deoxys-Attack is extremely frail, however, it is not advisable to run unless your team can provide those openings.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Klefki**: Due to its defensive typing, ability, and stats, Klefki is able to live quite a few of Deoxys-Attack's moves and more importantly cripple it with status moves such as Swagger and Thunder Wave before Deoxys-Attack can react.

**Choice Scarf Pokemon**: Pokemon such as Xerneas, Jirachi and Genesect become massive issues for Deoxys-Attack when equipped with a Choice Scarf. The former not only outspeeds Deoxys-Attack but hits everything else in its team for a big chunk of damage. The last two use flinching moves such as Iron Head to straight up beat Deoxys-Attack without it being able to move or U-Turn out into walls, which quickly wears Deoxys Attack down. All three, however, dislike taking hits, particularly Knock Off

**Mega Sableye **: Its typing makes it immune to Psycho Boost, Superpower or Extreme Speed. It also has sufficient bulk to tank hits such as Knock Off or Ice Beam with ease and stall out Deoxys-Attack or just KO it outright. Magic Bounce even prevents Deoxys-Attack from setting up Stealth Rocks or Taunting it.

Any chip damage from entry hazards or status moves will render it practically useless until the opposing Extreme Speed Pokemon are Knocked out.

**Priority**: Priority users can take advantage of Deoxys-Attacks poor bulk, forcing it to use extreme speed rather than getting major damage in. Yveltal and Giratina-O in particular accomplish this well, as they have the bulk to take a hit should Deoxys-Attack have an intact Focus Sash.
