Arbok

[OVERVIEW]

Thanks to its nice typing, access to Coil, and array of strong attacks such as Gunk Shot and Earthquake, Arbok is a very potent threat in the PU metagame. Arbok also has access to priority in Sucker Punch, allowing it to pick off weakened foes and KO many faster Pokemon after a Coil boost. Furthermore, some good defensive capabilities in its access to Intimidate and its pure Poison typing allow Arbok to check Pokemon such as Machoke and Roselia and absorb Toxic Spikes. However, without the help of Intimidate along with Coil, Arbok is fairlt frail and susceptible to even neutral attacks such as Floatzel's Waterfall and Stoutland's Return. Arbok also requires a good amount of support to weaken checks such as Misdreavus.

[SET]
name: Offensive Coil
move 1: Coil
move 2: Gunk Shot
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Sucker Punch
item: Black Sludge / Shuca Berry
ability: Intimidate
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Coil boosts Arbok's Attack, Defense, and accuracy, allowing it to pick up KOs on Pokemon such as Machoke while taking hits from it and giving Gunk Shot a 100% hit rate at +1. Gunk Shot can deal a lot of damage to even neutral foes such as Stoutland and Monferno. Earthquake hits Rock-, Ground-, and Steel-types such as Golem, Stunfisk, and Pawniard. Sucker Punch allows Arbok to pick off weakened foes and frailer Pokemon such as Kadabra and Zebstrika while also dealing a lot of damage to fast and frail Pokemon at +1.

Set Details
========

A fully offensive EV spread with an Adamant nature allows Arbok to hit as hard as possible while outspeeding Pokemon such as Pawniard and slower variants of Grumpig. Intimidate allows Arbok to switch into or set up on physical attackers such as Simisage and Machoke, while Black Sludge gives Arbok passive recovery, allowing it to switch into these Pokemon multiple times. Alternatively, Shuca Berry allows Arbok to take Ground-type moves much more effectively, allowing it to lure and possibly beat Golem and Stunfisk. A Jolly nature can be used to outspeed Adamant Monferno and Timid Grumpig, though Arbok loses a lot of power and misses out on some KOs, namely the 2HKO on Stunfisk at +1; however, to combat the loss in power, Arbok can make use of Life Orb, though this detracts from Arbok's longevity.

Usage Tips
========

Arbok should mainly be used as a wallbreaker, making it easier for its teammates to sweep late-game. Arbok can also use Coil to sweep late-game itself, picking off weakened foes with Sucker Punch. Arbok can switch into and should set up on Pokemon that can't deal much damage to it such as Roselia and Machoke. Arbok can lure the likes of Golem and Stunfisk into thinking they can KO it, but Arbok can survive a hit thanks to Shuca Berry and KO them in return. Do not switch Arbok into Pokemon with Defiant such as Pawniard and Purugly, as they will gain an Attack boost.

Team Options
========

Grass-types such as Tangela and Quilladin make for good partners for Arbok, as they can take on the Ground-types that plague it such as Golem and Stunfisk. Arbok also appreciates Pokemon such as Metang that can take on Psychic-types such as Grumpig and Mr. Mime. Wallbreakers such as Stoutland and Machoke are able to weaken a lot of Arbok's checks, making it easier for Arbok to sweep; additionally, Stoutland is able to trap Misdreavus with Pursuit. Pokemon such as Monferno and Dodrio that struggle with Stunfisk appreciate Arbok's ability to lure it in and deal with it thanks to Shuca Berry. Because Arbok is somewhat slow, Leavanny can be a great partner, providing Sticky Web to slow down faster foes such as Floatzel.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

A Coil set with Rest along with Shed Skin can be used to absorb status moves and act as a late-game sweeper, though Arbok can be revenge killed much more easily with the loss of Sucker Punch, and is a less reliable check to Pokemon such as Machoke because of the absence of Intimidate. Shed Skin can also be used on the main offensive set, although Arbok is then unable to switch into Pokemon such as Simisage. Choice Band or Choice Scarf along with Switcheroo can be used for immediate power or Speed, though Arbok loses its sweeping capabilities with the loss of Coil. Seed Bomb or Aqua Tail can be used to deal more damage to Golem and Solrock, with the former also dealing considerably more damage to Relicanth. However, they deal less damage to Pokemon such as Pawniard and Stunfisk. Crunch can be effective to take on Misdreavus, though it's a very situational move and doesn't provide coverage for many other Pokemon. Substitute can be used to avoid status moves while maintaining the utility that Intimidate gives, but Arbok then misses out on priority in Sucker Punch. An EV spread of 160 HP / 252 Atk / 96 Spe with an Adamant nature can be used for extra bulk while still outspeeding the likes of Pawniard.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Ground-types**: Pokemon such as Stunfisk, Golem, and Gabite can switch into Arbok's Gunk Shot, and all of them take little damage from Earthquake and Sucker Punch; additionally, all of these Pokemon can use Arbok to set up Stealth Rock. However, if Stunfisk switches into Arbok as it sets up a Coil, Arbok can beat it one-on-one.

**Psychic-types**: Pokemon such as Mr. Mime and Grumpig, while they struggle to switch into Arbok, can both revenge kill Arbok. However, Grumpig lacking Colbur Berry and Mr. Mime can both be KOed by boosted Sucker Punch with some prior damage. Defensively, Solrock can take anything Arbok wants to throw at it, burn it, then wear it down with Zen Headbutt.

**Ghost-types**: Pokemon such as Misdreavus and Gourgeist-XL don't mind Gunk Shot and both of the two can burn Arbok. However, if Misdreavus is offensive and doesn't carry Will-O-Wisp, Arbok can KO it with Sucker Punch.

**Strong Attackers**: Because Arbok is very frail, it struggles to take hits such as Floatzel's Hydro Pump, Dodrio's Brave Bird, and Monferno's Flare Blitz, though they must be at high health to avoid being KOed by Sucker Punch.

Thoughts on slashing Jolly for outspeeding Pig and Adamant Monf? It's a pretty big plus for me, although usually I use Poison Point or Life Orb with that rather than Sludge to make up for the loss in power.

I think Shuca should be slashed as baiting in fisk and golem is always nice, and also Jolly mentioned in SD as 176 timid colbur pig is everywhere

UT:
I dont really see arbok much as a late game cleaner, its usually a wallbreaker and very occasionally a cleaner
The thing about defiant users is irrelevant as its really situational and arbok isnt a prime counter to either of those mons, and the thing about toxic spikes is obvious and not worth mentioning
Instead, mention stuff that it can set up on, and also stuff that it can switch in on.

Mention shedskin on offensive set in OO

Under strong attackers mention somewhere about them being at high health or sucker might KO them

Then change ur title u fucking pinecone

I don't really get what "without the help of intimidate" means if you're gonna mention a physically attacking threat, if that means that it's intimidate reliant just write that in a less weird way in write-up
Change the examples of things Arbok needs weakened, Vullaby loses 1v1 if switching into Coil with rocks up and golem loses 1v1 switching into coil if Shuca, and you even mention golem as a target of eq and something to lure with shuca

  • Arbok should mainly be used as a wallbreaker, making it easier to sweep late-game.
  • Arbok can also use Coil to sweep late-game, making it easier to sweep late-game.
lolwut
Also Audino is a poor example mon to set up on bc Encore is v common. You can also mention how sucker is useful, how u can absorb Tspikes, and how arbok can lure things like stunfisk w/shuca

Mention teammates that like stunfisk n stuff being lured and weakened with shuca
In C&C mime can also be KOed by sucker if weakened. Also kadabra is a relevant check which can encore into setup moves or live a hit w/sash and Metang is sorta annoying if physically bulky at full health

Overview

- I would state what you wrote slightly differently; mention that it needs Coil and Intimidate together to survive physical hits, otherwise it is quite frail and therefore susceptible to the tier's wallbreakers such as CB Stoutland. Change Floatzel's Hydro Pump to Waterfall here, otherwise it makes it sound like Intimidate helps Arbok sponge Hydro Pumps from Floatzel.
- Give a quick mention and talk about how to build with Arbok and what sorts of teams it can fit on. It fits well on Bulky Offense for its ability to setup on Grass-types in the tier (Roselia, as you already mentioned) and on Balance given its ability to scare out Machoke via its Fighting-resist and Intimidate for Audino.

Moves

- Mention what targets Sucker Punch hits, just like you did for Earthquake - those would be frail offensive Pokemon and those that Sucker Punch hits super effectively, like Kadabra and Zebstrika.
- When you write, "Gunk Shot is a strong STAB move that can deal a lot of damage to even neutral foes such as Simipour and Monferno," this is strictly true, but I might use a different example than Simipour, so as to not imply that Arbok would win in this matchup because it outspeeds and OHKOes Arbok with LO Hydro Pump while living a +1 Sucker Punch at the same time.

Set Details

-
When you mention using a Jolly nature over an Adamant one, you could also mention here that using a Life Orb would account for this lowered Attack, but would also detract from Arbok's bulk.

Usage Tips

-
Talk about how Arbok should use its Poison-typing to soak up Toxic Spikes for its teammates.
- Mention that it should switch out of Psychic-types that it can't OHKO with a +1 Sucker Punch, like Mr. Mime.
- Say that it needs to switch out of crippling status moves, like Misdreavus' Will-O-Wisp.
- As it'll be using Intimidate, you should talk about how it should avoid switching into Competitive and Defiant Pokemon, Purugly and Pawniard especially, as it'll boost their Attack.
- If you're using Black Sludge, you could mention that you can switch Arbok into predicted Tricks, leaving the opposing Trick user to be whittled down every turn by Black Sludge's effect on non-Poison-types.

Team Options

-
If not using Shed Skin, Arbok is beaten by status users like Misdreavus, so clerics like Audino are useful partners for keeping Arbok healthy throughout matches on Balance teams.
- Arbok is somewhat slow, so Leavanny's Sticky Web support is conducive for letting it sweep past Pokemon that are faster than Arbok.

OO

- When you mention Seed Bomb and Aqua Tail, you can also talk about the advantages of Aqua Tail as being able to hit Probopass because Air Balloon and its Steel typing mean Arbok will be immune to everything but Sucker Punch if it's using Earthquake as its coverage option. Aqua Tail is needed to do something to Solrock before it's burned by WoW, too.

C&C

- Solrock, while not as common as it used to be, could fit in here under Psychic-types, Rock-types, or something like status users. Solrock is Immune to EQ / resists Gunk Shot / hits with STAB Zen Headbutt / burns it and sets up SR on it, so it should be mentioned somewhere.
- A strange sentence here when you talk about Ghost-types: "Pokemon such as Misdreavus and Arbok don't mind Gunk Shot and both of the two can burn Arbok." Also, mention Dusknoir here too, as it hits Arbok hard with Earthquake.

I checked this before you wrote it up, but once Zard's comments and my comments from this have been implemented, it'll be 3/3 Dundies

You should probably mention an alternate EV spread of 160 HP / 252 Atk / 96 Spe with an Adamant nature to provide some bulk while still outspeeding Adamant Pawniard.
