Articuno [QC 3/3] [GP 2/2]

[Overview]

Hindered by a horrible movepool, bad typing, and a severe Stealth Rock weakness, it's no wonder that Articuno is often overshadowed by its legendary counterpart Moltres in RU. Although Articuno doesn't have the same offensive presence that Moltres does, it boasts an amazing base 125 Special Defense stat and a decent 90 base Defense stat, making it a capable phazer and stalling Pokemon. With the Pressure ability, as well as reliable recovery in the form of Roost, Articuno can be a great defensive asset to the right team if provided with the proper support.

[Set]

name: Specially Defensive
move 1: Ice Beam
move 2: Roost
move 3: Substitute
move 4: Roar / Toxic
item: Leftovers
ability: Pressure
nature: Calm
evs: 248 HP / 176 SpD / 84 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This is the only set that Articuno can pull off effectively. Because of its nonexistent attacking capabilities, you must instead take advantage of Articuno's high defensive stats. With entry hazard support and hail, Articuno serves as an effective phazer or Toxic staller. However, because it relies solely on Ice Beam for damage, it is recommended that Roar be used over Toxic so that Steel-type Pokemon cannot wall or set up on Articuno. Substitute is useful for Pressure stalling, racking up poison damage, avoiding status, and scouting for dangerous attacks. When combined with Pressure, Substitute allows Articuno to PP stall even super effective moves such as Stone Edge and Thunderbolt. Provided Articuno is faster, it can alternate between Substitute and Roost until the opponent runs out of PP or dies from a combination of hail and poison damage.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Articuno requires both Rapid Spin and entry hazard support in order to maximize its effectiveness at stalling. Claydol and Sandslash make good partners for Articuno because they can set up Stealth Rock, spin away hazards, and take physical attacks that Articuno can't. If Roar is used in the fourth moveslot, an alternate EV spread of 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD can be used, as the extra bulk is helpful to a dedicated phazer. With 84 Speed EVs, Articuno outruns some notable Pokemon such as 0 Speed Uxie and Drapion, Adamant max Speed Bouffalant and Crawdaunt, and bulky Rotom-C and Gallade.

Articuno struggles to do anything to Steel-type Pokemon; therefore, trappers such as Dugtrio and Magneton are excellent choices for dealing with them. At least one dedicated counter to Steel-types is necessary when running this set, as there is nothing Articuno can do to prevent Pokemon such as Hone Claws Durant and Shift Gear Klinklang from setting up.

[Other Options]

Articuno's movepool is sadly lacking. Ice Beam aside, Articuno's offensive options are limited to Signal Beam, Hidden Power, AncientPower, and Water Pulse; hardly good enough to warrant an offensive set. However, Articuno does have a few viable support options; Tailwind and Heal Bell are great choices, as with proper management of Stealth Rock, Articuno can easily handle the frequent switching that these moves require. Phazing an opponent with Roar may result in an unfavorable matchup for Articuno; If a tactical retreat is required, you risk exposing Articuno to more Stealth Rock damage and losing your momentum. If you wish to avoid these situations, Haze provides an alternate means of phazing which will reduce the frequency with which Articuno must switch out.

[Counters]

Generally, countering Articuno is not a difficult feat. Almost any Steel-type Pokemon can take it on; Klinklang and Durant can both easily set up on or KO Articuno, and strong physical attackers that outrun Articuno can usually force a switch if it isn't behind a Substitute. Hitmonlee, Primeape, Entei, and Aggron are just a few common choices. Even some special attackers can take advantage of Articuno's horrible defensive typing. Typhlosion and Moltres absolutely wreck it with their STAB Fire-type moves, while Magneton resists both Toxic and Ice Beam and can easily set up on it. Even when behind a Substitute, Pokemon with access to Rock Blast such as Armaldo and Cinccino pose as a severe threat to Articuno.

[Dream World]

Articuno gets Snow Cloak as its Hidden ability. Despite the 20% Evasion boost in hail, Pressure is usually the more reliable choice.

I would mention a faster EV spread in the AC to outspeed certain Rock- and Steel-types that can OHKO with the appropriate STAB move. Also, you say Whirlwind in the [SET COMMENTS], but you have Roar listed in the set. Articuno doesn't learn Whirlwind apparently... :o

Reflect might be worth a mention in the OO too.

One more thing, please post in the reservation thread after your skeleton has been posted so I can update it accordingly! And don't edit your posts xD

EDIT: Magneton has decent synergy and traps Steel-types as well.

I'd mention that Aggron specifically threatens Articuno with Heavy Slam. You can possibly stall out Head Smash with sub roost stalling.

Shouldn't the nature be Calm? Careful is -Sp.Atk and your only attack is Ice Beam which is special.

Ah thought i changed it, thanks for catching that. I'll write the paragraphs this weekend. Been a hectic week.

Also any opinions on the secondary set? Outruns Jolly aggron/no spe evs Uxie/no Spe evs Drapion/Bulky Rotom C sets/ max speed bouffalant. I think that is all it needs to outspeed in the RU tier since all the pokes listed can be pressure stalled.

[Overview]

(delete space)Hindered by a horrible movepool, bad typing, and a severe Stealth Rock weakness, it's no wonder that Articuno is often outclassed by its legendary counterpart Moltres in RU (I wouldn't say it's outclassed, since they play two completely different roles, try to word it differently?). Although While Articuno doesn't have the offensive presence that Moltres has, it boasts an amazing base formidable (I changed the wording because formidable seems more "offensively oriented" wording to me) 125 base Special Defense stat and a decent base 100 base Defense stat making it a capable phazer and stalling Pokemon. With the ability Pressure as well as reliable recovery in the form of Roost, if provided with the proper support, Articuno can be a great defensive asset to the right team. along with the ability Pressure, Articuno becomes an option worth considering if you have the proper support to abuse its defensive capabilities.

[SET COMMENTS] (All caps)

This set is the only set that Articuno can effectively arguably pull off better than Moltres. Because of With its nonexistent attacking capabilities, you we must take advantage of Articuno's high defensive base stats. With entry hazard support and hail, Articuno can serves as an effective phazer or Toxic staller. However, because Since it only relies only on STAB Ice Beam for damage, it is recommended that Roar be used over Toxic so that Steel-type Pokemon don't wall you or set up on you. Substitute is useful there for Pressure stalling, racking up poison damage, avoiding status, and scouting for dangerous attacks. Substitute, (add comma) when combined with Pressure, (add comma) allows Articuno to PP stall out even moves super effective moves such as Stone Edge and Thunderbolt. As long as Articuno is faster, it can alternate between Substitute and Roost until till the opponent's move runs out of PP or dies from a combination of hail damage and poison damage.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS] (All caps)

Articuno requires really needs both Rapid Spin support and entry hazard support in order to maximize its effectiveness at stalling. Claydol and Sandslash would make good partners for Articuno because since they can set up Stealth Rocks, spin away hazards, Rapid Spin, and take the super effective attacks physical hits that Articuno can't take. If Roar is used in chosen as the fourth 4th moveslot, then an alternate EV spread of 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD can be used as since the extra bulk is would be helpful to for a dedicated phazer. With 84 Speed EVs, Articuno can outruns some notable Pokemon such as Uxie and Drapion with no Speed ev investments, Adamant max Speed Bouffalant, Bulky Rotom-C sets, Bulky Gallade, and Adamant Max speed Crawdaunt. This set's purpose is to outstall a few more threats while still maintaining Articuno's bulk. (redundant)
(combine paragraphs)

With 84 speed, Articuno can outrun some notable pokemons such as Uxie and Drapion with no speed ev investments, Adamant max speed Bouffalant, Bulky Rotom-C sets, Bulky Gallade, and Adamant Max speed Crawdaunt. This set's purpose is to outstall a few more threats while still maintaining Articuno's bulk.

Because Since Articuno won't be doing anything to Steel-type Pokemon, Dugtrio and Magneton are would be make great partners to take out Steel-types. At least one dedicated counter to Steel-types is necessary when running this the Toxic stall set as since there is nothing Articuno can do to prevent stat boosting steel Pokemon like such as Hone Claws Durant and Shift Gear Klinklang from setting up on it. If having to include many support pokemons puts you off, Moltres is a good alternate replacement for Articuno except it is much weaker on the defensive side. However its STAB fire moves allows it to deal with steels with no problem and it retains the same Pressure stall set that Articuno gets. (irrelevant)

[Other Options]

Unfortunately, (add comma) Articuno doesn't have many other options that aren't isn't based around stalling stall-oriented. Other than STAB Ice Beam, its offensive movepool consist of Signal Beam, Hidden Power, Ancient Power, and Water Pulse, (add comma) hardly . Hardly good enough to warrant an offensive set. However, Articuno does have a few other viable support options. Tailwind and Heal Bell are decent viable options considering Articuno's access to has reliable recovery. With its great bulk and reliable recovery, Articuno is easily able to find plenty of opportunities to make use of the aforementioned moves. Possessing reliable recovery and the proper defences, Articuno can come in multiple times and use these moves to their maximum potential. Haze can be used as an alternative phazing method option in conjunction with Toxic incase you perfer to beat certain pokemons such as Lilligant without Hidden Power Rock one on one without switching (I have no idea what you're trying to say here...). This reduces the need to switch Articuno in and out which is very favorable due to its 4x Stealth Rock weakness.

[Counters]

In general, it isn't very hard to deal with an Articuno. Almost any Steel-type Pokemon can take it on. Klinklang and Durant can both easily set up on or KO Articuno easily if it doesn't run Roar. Strong physical attackers pokemon in general that outrun Articuno can usually force a switch out if it Articuno isn't behind a Substitute. Hitmonlee, Primeape, Entei, and Aggron are just a few common choices that can force a switch for Articuno. Even some special attackers can take advantage of Articuno's horrible defensive typing. Typhlosion and Moltres absolutely wreck it with their STAB Fire-type moves, (add comma) and Magneton resists both Toxic and Ice Beam and can easily set up on it with a substitute chargebeam set. Even when behind a Substitute, Pokemon with access to Rock Blast such as Armaldo and Cinccino pose as a severe threat to Articuno. Perhaps its biggest hindrancecounter is its weakness to Stealth Rock as since it Articuno will be very limited to two switch-ins with Stealth Rock on the field how many times it can come in to battle. One forced switch under half health and Articuno is out of commission if you don't have Rapid Spin support.

[Dream World]

Articuno gets Snow Cloak as its Dream World ability. Outside of a hail team, it is obvious that Pressure is the better option. Despite the 20% Evasion boost in hail, Pressure is generally the better ability because of its reliability.Even within a hail team, Pressure and Snow Cloak will be useful in their own unique way depending on what pokemon Articuno needs to stall. Generally the always reliable Pressure for PP stalling is better than a 20% chance evasion increase, but if your lucky with Snow Cloak it will be easier for Articuno to keep its Substitute make Snow Cloak a second option worth considering.

A few things to note:

Steel-type, not Steel Pokemon.
Substitute, not Sub.
The [SET COMMENTS] and [ADDITIONAL COMMENTS] are always capitalized, but not the other tags.
All moves start with a capital letter, i.e. Roost, not roost.
Base stats such as Speed or Defense are always capitalized, but when describing defenses, such as "Articuno has excellent defensive stats," it is not capitalized.
All weather such as hail, rain, sun, and sandstorm is not capitalized.
"Such as" over "like" in all instances.
"Its" is possessive, "It's" = "It is."
Setup = noun, set up = verb

updated with amateur gp check. Thanks for the advice, I definitely got very redundant and added alot of useless information. Next time I'll try and focus on making it more concise if I'm able to.

I'm approving omicron's check, but a few things you may want to look over yourself. Your 'counters' section should be [Checks and Counters]. You should also have a read through and try combining any VERY short sentences as well, there's concise, and then there's just 'too short'. For example, your 'counters' section:

'In general, it isn't very hard to deal with Articuno. Almost any Steel-type Pokemon can take it on. Klinklang and Durant can both easily set up on or KO Articuno.'

You could easily combine these to make something like this (red is remove, blue is edit):

In general, it isn't very hard to deal with Articuno. Almost any Steel-type Pokemon can take it on;(semi colon) Klinklang and Durant can both easily use Articuno as set up bait, on or even KO it with their STAB moves. Articuno.

This will be OKAY for now though, either wait for another GP member to check this, or I'll swing by soon.

This needs another stamp.

Capitalize 'Rapid Spin' here and you can have your second OFFICIAL stamp.
