Doubles Azumarill

[OVERVIEW]

Azumarill is a strong Pokemon despite a mediocre-looking base 50 Attack stat, as with its access to Huge Power, Azumarill becomes a threatening attacker. Thanks to its stellar defensive stats and Water / Fairy typing, Azumarill has plenty of opportunities to set up with Belly Drum and sweep with Aqua Jet, making Azumarill a premier offensive wincon in Doubles OU that can make quick work of teams that are weakened or unprepared for it. Azumarill is let down by its poor Speed, however, though this can be an asset with the use of Trick Room. This makes Azumarill rely on Aqua Jet to KO faster Pokemon, which is not reliable because of Tapu Lele's Psychic Terrain. While Azumarill does have good bulk that allows it to use Belly Drum in a variety of situations, it typically needs support in the form of redirection or Fake Out in order to create a situation in which it can sweep the opposing team. Azumarill is also able to be worn down by Intimidate and burns, which can quickly reduce its ability to threaten a team.

Moves

Aqua Jet lets a boosted Azumarill pick off specific threats and break opposing teams without the risk of getting outrun. Knock Off is used to allow Azumarill to hit Pokemon that resist Aqua Jet, such as Amoonguss and Ferrothorn, and those that can possibly survive Aqua Jet, even at +6, such as Celesteela and Aegislash. Play Rough is a nice option to hit prevalent Pokemon that resist Water-type attacks such as Tapu Fini and Tapu Bulu as well as hitting Dragon-types such as Mega Salamence and Zygarde hard even before a Belly Drum boost. Belly Drum turns Azumarill into a sweeper powerful enough to OHKO a large portion of the metagame after just one turn. Protect is essential,(AC) since it lets Azumarill stall out field effects such as sun, Psychic Terrain, and Tailwind.

Set Details
========

Sitrus Berry is used to minimize the cost of using Belly Drum, which means Azumarill has more time to sweep after a boost. Maximum Attack investment with an Adamant nature gives Azumarill the most offensive presence, while maximum HP investment and 4 Defense EVs give Azumarill the best overall bulk. A Brave nature can be worthwhile on a Trick Room-oriented team. If there is Tailwind support on Azumarill's team, 160 Speed EVs can be used to outspeed Mega Metagross under Tailwind.

Usage Tips
========

Due to Azumarill being an all-or-nothing Pokemon with Belly Drum, it is best saved for late-game when your opponent's Pokemon are sufficiently weakened so it can successfully sweep their team. You don't want to use Azumarill that much beforehand, or it'll be too low on HP to use Belly Drum. You should also only use Belly Drum when the biggest threats to Azumarill are removed, most notably Tapu Lele, whose Psychic Terrain makes Aqua Jet mostly useless. Using Fake Out or redirection gives Azumarill a much easier time setting up by incapacitating one of your opponent's Pokemon, since due to Azumarill's good defensive typing and solid bulk, most Pokemon are unable to do enough damage on their own to stop a Belly Drum if Azumarill has full HP. Protect is very useful to help keep Azumarill free from harm when the threat of Belly Drum forces your opponent to target it. Protect also lets Azumarill bait attacks when boosted because its +6 Attack stat is almost always the most immediate threat to the opponent, forcing them to attack or double attack Azumarill.

Team Options
========

The island guardians, with the exception of Tapu Lele, make good partners for Azumarill because they can cancel out the Psychic Terrain that stops Azumarill's Aqua Jet. Tapu Bulu makes for a solid partner for Azumarill by removing troublesome Water-types that would otherwise check Azumarill, while Azumarill can remove Fire-types that threaten Tapu Bulu. Tapu Koko is also a solid partner for Azumarill because it threatens the Water-types that Azumarill can't break easily, and it also appreciates Ground-types being removed by Azumarill. Redirectors such as Amoonguss make setting up Belly Drum much easier by making your opponent target the redirector instead of Azumarill. Fake Out users such as Scrafty also make setting up Belly Drum easier, since Fake Out means Azumarill only has to worry about one of the opponent's Pokemon while setting up; this strategy has a shared weakness with Azumarill in Psychic Terrain, however, since Fake Out fails on grounded targets in Psychic Terrain. Pokemon such as Transform Mew and Psych Up Metagross can copy and utilize the +6 Attack boost from Azumarill's Belly Drum. Mega Gengar's Shadow Tag can trap foes that are setup bait for Azumarill while also taking on potential checks such as Tapu Lele and Shaymin-S. If Azumarill is running Knock Off instead of Play Rough, it's crucial that it is partnered with a Pokemon that can deal with Tapu Fini and Tapu Bulu, such as Mega Gengar or Amoonguss.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]

Other Options
=============

Normalium Z allows Azumarill to use Belly Drum even after its HP drops below 50%, but it comes at the cost of Sitrus Berry's HP boost after Azumarill uses Belly Drum.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Psychic Terrain**: Psychic Terrain gives Azumarill a much harder time sweeping by nullifying its main attacking move in Aqua Jet and making Fake Out less effective in aiding Azumarill's setup.

**Opposing Weather**: Sun makes Azumarill much less effective, as it halves the damage of Aqua Jet and can force Azumarill to attack with one of its secondary moves, leaving it vulnerable to faster Pokemon.

**Grass-types**: Reasonably bulky Grass-types such as Amoonguss and Tapu Bulu and resist Azumarill's primary STAB attack while inflicting heavy damage to Azumarill in return.

**Intimidate and Burns**: Intimidate users are annoying to Azumarill before a Belly Drum boost, since -1 Azumarill isn't threatening. After a Belly Drum boost, +5 Azumarill is still very threatening, but it can miss out on some KOs on bulky threats such as Ferrothorn, Alolan Muk, and some Mega Charizard-Y that +6 Azumarill can achieve. Burns halve Azumarill's Attack outright, which Azumarill hates. Pokemon such as Gengar and Rotom-W threaten to burn Azumarill with Will-O-Wisp, while users of Scald and Steam Eruption such as Politoed and Volcanion can also threaten to burn Azumarill.

**Electric-types**: Pokemon such as Tapu Koko and Zapdos threaten Azumarill before it can set up a Belly Drum with powerful Electric-type moves, and some Zapdos sets have enough Defense investment to survive a boosted Aqua Jet.

**Poison-types**: Pokemon such as Mega Gengar and Alolan Muk can threaten to KO Azumarill before it can set up Belly Drum, with Mega Gengar being especially dangerous because it prevents Azumarill from switching out.

**Faster Pokemon**: Pokemon such as Mega Salamence, Mega Metagross, and Kyurem-B are able to outspeed and do enough damage to Azumarill to either prevent it from using Belly Drum or KO it outright.

**Tapu Fini**: Tapu Fini resists Aqua Jet, completely shuts down Azumarill sets that lack Play Rough, and can fire back with Moonblast, KOing Azumarill after a bit of prior damage.

Implemented tree's check from earlier, moved normalium z to OO and scrapped LO cuz that sounds bad. Open to more OO suggestions but not bad sets like LO or CB.

There are a couple adjustments to wording I could suggest but considering that you just took Haruno's skeleton and you're about to write it up in your own words and probably fix them, I'll hold off. QC 1/2, go ahead and write up when you get the chance.

Amcheck 2/2. The following bullets don't need to be implemented unless endorsed by the QC team.

  • [OVERVIEW] There should be more emphasis on the fact that Azumarill is an offensive wincon; once it sets up it will make quick work of knocking down the opposing team if left unchecked.
  • [OVERVIEW] A small detail, but somewhere in this intro you should mention that Azumarill isn't usually a self-sustaining attacker; it typically requires support from its teammates to get a clean chance at setting up.
  • [OVERVIEW] You mention Azumarill's low speed, but there should also be a mention of how this low speed can also be an asset inside of Trick Room.
  • [SET COMMENTS] Delete the following sentence, which is extraneous info better left to the Usage Tips section: "Belly Drum helps make late game cleaning relatively simple."
  • [SET] Move the 4 Spe EVs into Defense or Special Defense; speed creeping mirrors is a no-no in analyses because speed creeping has to stop at some point.
  • [Set Details] You can simply say something along the lines of "Maximum investments in HP and Attack give Azumarill as much bulk and power as possible." Statements like "Adamant maxes out your attack while reducing Azumarill’s unimportant special attack" go into more detail than what's nessesary.
  • [Set Details] Remove the sentence about speed creeping Azumarill mirrors.
  • [Set Details] Mention how a Brave nature is also usable on Trick Room teams to minimize speed.
  • [Set Details] On Tailwind teams, EVs can be moved from HP to Speed to outspeed certain threats, although with less HP Azumarill will have a harder time setting up and staying on the field. Some Tailwind benchmarks to consider: 160 Speed EVs outspeeds Mega Metagross; 204 Speed EVs outspeeds Mega Salamence; 248 Speed EVs outspeeds Tapu Koko and Mega Gengar
  • [Set Details] I wouldn't say that Azumarill needs to be saved for the late game when its foes are weakened; once it sets up it mows down most opponents even from full HP. It would be more accurate to mention that Azumarill should be reserved for a point in the match where it can be well-positioned and well-supported by its teammates.
  • [Team Options] The first sentence here should sum up that any of the three Island Guardians not named Tapu Lele are useful for cancelling out Psychic Terrain. Then, go into more detail about how Bulu and Koko especially appreciate having Azumarill clear out Fire- and Ground-types, etc.
  • [Team Options] In the sentence where you mention Psych Up, remove the reference to Entei as it isn't in our Viability Rankings.
  • [Checks and Counters] Change the tag **Tapu Lele** to **Psychic Terrain** -- technically, Tapu Lele is the only relevant Psychic Terrain setter. However, it's the terrain, not the mon, that checks Azumarill. This paragraph should also better articulate that Psychic Terrain prevents Azumarill from circumventing its slow speed with a priority move (right now you just say it stops its main attacking move).
  • [Checks and Counters] Change the tag **Mega Charizard Y** to **Opposing Weather** -- Again, it's the intense sun that checks Azumarill, not Charizard itself. If anything, Azumarill's Aqua Jet still OHKOes most variants of Mega Charizard Y under sun.
  • [Checks and Counters] Change the tag **Grass-Type Pokemon** to **Grass-Types** -- this is a new-ish change to QC policy that is inclusive of Pokemon packing non-STAB coverage of whatever type is being discussed.
  • [Checks and Counters] Add tags for Electric-types and Poison-types. Azumarill is still really vulnrable to attackers like Tapu Koko, Mega Gengar, etc. before it gets its chance to set up.
  • [Checks and Counters] Add a tag for **Faster Pokemon**. Prior to setting up, Azumarill is prone to attacks from most of the metagame. Even after setting up, Azumarill can be rendered vulnerable to faster attackers if Psychic Terrain is activated to circumvent Aqua Jet.

Also, I do want to preface these comments by saying I was focusing mainly on the content, and not the written composition of this analysis. That said, before this is ready to be shown publicly on the Smogon website, the language and grammar of this analysis need to be tightened up a bit. Just as one example, there are numerous spots in this analysis where terms that should be capitalized aren't. The GP team will help with this once you get to that point, but to reduce their workload, it would be a good idea to tighten up the composition of this analysis on your end as much as you can.

Do the above, except only mention the Metagross benchmark for Tailwind because the other ones aren't really worth at all lol.

  • Overview: mention Lele being annoying as it then can't use Aqua Jet reliably.
  • Moves: Aqua Jet isn't only for picking off threats, it's also what lets it break through and sweep foes reliably.
  • Moves: Give specific targets for Knock Off, stuff it lets Azu hit (Amoong, Ferro) and stuff that it can power through when Jet fall short (Aegi, Gross). Can also mention slamming Lax
  • Moves: "Belly Drum gives Azumarill +12 attack at the cost of half its hp; however, which is somewhat remedied by Sitrus Berry since it makes the cost of belly drum go from 50% hp to 25% hp. Belly Drum helps make late game cleaning relatively simple" - try to condense this sentence more, focus on what it does practically instead of what it technically does. Emphasize the second sentence's point more. You don't have to mention Sitrus here.
  • Moves: "It also lets Azumarill bait attacks from opponents as its +6 Atk stat is almost always the most immediate threat to the opponent, forcing them to attack or double attack Azumarill." - this is Usage Tips material
  • Team Options: If not running PR, breakers to Fini (and Bulu, but do we really give a damn about him?) are a must.
  • C&C: Add a Tapu Fini tag because Tapu Fini the Pokemon itself can wall w/o PR

Azumarill is a strong Pokemon despite a mediocre-looking (add hyphen) base 50 Attack stat, but as with its access to Huge Power, (comma) Azumarill becomes a threatening attacker. (the second clause ("Azumarill is threatening") doesn't really contradict the first ("Azumarill is strong despite its low base Attack")) Azumarill, Thanks to its stellar defensive stats and Water / Fairy typing with Water and Fairy, Azumarill has plenty of opportunities to set up (two words) with Belly Drum and sweep with Aqua Jet, (period to comma) This access to Belly Drum and a STAB priority move in Aqua Jet makes (this is repetitive with the previous sentence, so combining them makes the overview shorter and easier to understand) making Azumarill a premier offensive win-condition wincon in Doubles OU and that can make quick work of teams that are weakened or unprepared for it. Azumarill is let down by its poor Speed, however, (add comma) even though this can be an asset with the use of Trick Room. This makes Azumarill rely on Aqua Jet to KO faster Pokemon, (capitalize and add a comma) which has become less is not reliable because of with the addition of Tapu Lele and its Psychic Terrain to the metagame. Aqua Jet patches up Azumarill's Speed, letting it (technically Aqua Jet doesn't boost Azumarill's Speed directly) lets a boosted Azumarill pick off specific threats and break opposing teams while having boosted without the risk of getting outrun. Knock Off is used to allow Azumarill to hit Pokemon that resist Aqua Jet, such as Amoonguss and Ferrothorn, and those that can possibly survive Aqua Jet, even at +6, (remove commas) such as Celesteela and Aegislash. Play Rough is a nice option to hit prevalent Pokemon that resist Water resists (just Water, or both Water and Dark?) such as Tapu Fini or and Tapu Bulu as well as hitting Dragon-types such as Mega Salamence and Zygarde hard even before a Belly Drum boost. Belly Drum gives Azumarill +12 attack at the cost of half its hp, turning turns (I don't think you need to explain the core mechanics of Belly Drum) Azumarill into a sweeper powerful enough to OHKO a large portion of the metagame after just one turn. Protect is essential since it lets you Azumarill stall out field effects such as sun, Psychic Terrain, and Tailwind., etc. ("etc" is redundant with "such as" here)

This makes Azumarill rely on Aqua Jet to KO faster Pokemon, which is not reliable because of Tapu Lele and its Lele's Psychic Terrain.

Knock Off is used to allow Azumarill to hit Pokemon that resist Aqua Jet, such as Amoonguss and Ferrothorn, and those that can possibly survive Aqua Jet, even at +6,(AC) such as Celesteela and Aegislash.

Set Details
========

Usage Tips
========

Due to Azumarill being an all-or-nothing Pokemon with Belly Drum, it is best saved for late-game,(RC) when your opponent's Pokemon are sufficiently weakened so you it can successfully sweep their team. (space) You don't want to use Azumarill that much beforehand, or it'll be too low on HP to use Belly Drum. (space) You should also only use Belly Drum when the biggest threats to Azumarill are removed, most notably Tapu Lele, whose Psychic Terrain makes Aqua Jet mostly useless.

========

Redirectors such as Amoonguss make setting up a Belly Drum much easier by making your opponent target the redirector instead of Azumarill. Fake Out users such as Scrafty also make setting up Belly Drum easier,(AC) since Fake Out means Azumarill only has to worry about one of the opponent's Pokemon while setting up; this strategy has a shared weakness with Azumarill in Psychic Terrain, however, since Fake Out fails on grounded targets in Psychic Terrain.

Other Options
=============

Normalium Z allows Azumarill to use Belly Drum even after its HP drops below 50%, but it comes at the cost of Sitrus Berry's HP boost after Azumarill uses Belly Drum.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Intimidate and Burns**: Intimidate users are annoying to Azumarill before a Belly Drum boost,(AC) since -1 Azumarill isn't threatening. After a Belly Drum boost, +5 Azumarill is still very threatening, but it can miss out on some KOs on bulky threats such as X, Y, and Z ("X, Y, and Z" was just filler text that you were supposed to fill in with actual examples, so put in some examples) that +6 Azumarill can achieve.
