Basculin

[OVERVIEW]

Basculin has a unique niche in the PU metagame with its great ability in Adaptability, which boosts the power of its Water-type moves and makes them hard to switch into. Its access to Adaptability-boosted priority in Aqua Jet allows it to pick off weakened threats such as Ninetales and Zebstrika. It also has access to great coverage moves such as Zen Headbutt and Ice Beam, which can catch its common switch-ins off guard. On the downside, it's very frail, and along with its base 98 Speed, this leaves it easily revenge killed by offensive Pokemon; additionally, it is walled by some bulky Water-types such as defensive Carracosta and Pelipper. It also faces competition from other common Water-types in the tier such as Barbaracle, Carracosta, Simipour, and Huntail because of their ability to set up and sweep.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Waterfall is Basculin's main STAB attack and is boosted by Adaptability, which allows it to hit neutral targets very hard. Zen Headbutt allows Basculin to take on Pokemon it struggles to beat otherwise, such as Poliwrath and Roselia. Ice Beam allows Basculin to hit Grass- and Dragon-types such as Tangela, Gourgeist-XL, Torterra, and Fraxure. Aqua Jet, which is also boosted by Adaptability, is used to pick off threats such as Ninetales and Raichu once they have been weakened to a low amount of health.

Set Details
========

Basculin utilizes maximum Speed and Attack EVs, as it 2HKOes Grass-types such as Gourgeist-XL and Tangela with uninvested Ice Beam regardless and bulk investment is unnecessary. A Naive nature is used over a Jolly nature so Ice Beam isn't weakened. Another viable option is a Naughty nature, giving Basculin much more power at the cost of some Speed, which prevents it from outspeeding Pokemon such as non-Choice Scarf Mr. Mime. The last of the EVs are placed into Special Attack to minimize passive damage. Life Orb gives a boost to all of Basculin's attacking moves, granting it the chance to OHKO Pokemon, such as Probopass, and letting it freely select different moves at the cost of recoil damage every turn.

Usage Tips
========

Bring Basculin in on a free switch against a Pokemon it outspeeds or a Pokemon with Aqua Jet. Use Basculin to punch holes against balanced and defensive teams alike or to finish off threats in the late-game. Don't leave Basculin in against faster Pokemon that can OHKO it, such as Ninjask and Raichu, unless they have been weakened to the point where they are KOed by Aqua Jet. Basculin is very frail and takes a lot of damage from the weakest of attacks, so don't leave it in against possible priority moves. Don't switch Basculin into strong attacks, as it will usually be 2HKOed even by resisted hits.

Team Options
========

Basculin works well with strong wallbreakers such as Stoutland and Ninetales that can weaken bulkier Pokemon such as Carracosta and Poliwrath for Basculin to clean up. Grass-types such as Tangela and Roselia work well with Basculin; Tangela to check Poliwrath and Carracosta, and Roselia to check Tangela and Poliwrath, as they can take super effective Electric- and Grass-type attacks aimed at it. Slow Volt Switch, Baton Pass, and U-turn users such as Probopass and Pelipper are great partners for Basculin because they allow Basculin a free switch in. Probopass can also trap Pawniard with Magnet Pull and get rid of it so Basculin doesn't have to worry about Pawniard's Sucker Punch. Entry hazard setters such as Roselia and Dwebble work well in conjunction with Basculin to help wear down its checks such as Poliwrath for Basculin to finish off. Carracosta and Barbaracle also make for good partners for Basculin because they can take on each other's checks.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

A Choice Band set with Superpower over Ice Beam can be used on Basculin for sheer damage, but it is unable to switch moves and is walled by bulky Grass-types. Aqua Tail is an option over Waterfall that allows Basculin to 2HKO some possible switch-ins such as Lickilicky and Misdreavus and has a chance to OHKO Piloswine after Stealth Rock. The downside of this is that it lacks Waterfall's chance to flinch and perfect accuracy. Taunt is a viable option that allows Basculin to prevent walls such as Gourgeist-XL from using status or recovery moves. Hidden Power Electric can be used to KO physical walls such as Pelipper and Carracosta.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Water-types**: Water-types such as Pelipper and Carracosta are able to easily take Basculin's main STAB moves and retaliate. The former can Defog on Basculin while the latter can use Stealth Rock or wear Basculin down with moves such as Knock Off and Toxic.

**Physical Tanks**: Physical tanks such as Avalugg and Furfrou are able to take physical hits from Basculin and retaliate with strong attacks. The former can take advantage of Basculin by using Rapid Spin, and the latter can gain momentum with U-turn.

**Status**: Status ailments such as burn and paralysis can easily cripple Basculin by limiting the damage it gets off with each hit or by slowing it down, rendering it almost useless.

**Electric-types**: Electric-types such as Zebstrika, Raichu, Electabuzz, and Rotom-F are able to outspeed Basculin and easily revenge kill it with Volt Switch or Thunderbolt. If they use Volt Switch, you lose momentum.

**Faster Pokemon**: Faster Pokemon such as Raichu, Simipour, and Furfrou are able to outspeed Basculin and easily take it out because it is so frail, although if they are weakened enough Basculin can knock them out with Aqua Jet.

**Residual Damage**: Residual damage such as Life Orb recoil, entry hazards, and chip damage from weaker attacks and pivoting is able to quickly wear Basculin down, limiting the number of times it is able to attack.

[OVERVIEW]
Mention that it's walled by common bulky Water-types such as Pelipper and Carracosta.

Set Details
========
Mention that Naive is used instead of just Jolly specifically because of Ice Beam. Those 4 SpA Evs don't really change anything at all so no need to talk about them. Also mention Adamant here because you don't miss out on that much Pokemon and the extra power is noticable.

Usage Tips
========
First point is somewhat misleading because you can also use it to revenge kill mons like Ninetales which you don't outspeed but can still force out, so reword that. Make clear that switching Basculin into attacks is usually a bad idea as even strong resisted hits can 2HKO.

Team Options
========
Also mention a slow Baton Pass when you talk about Volt Switch and U-turn. Other offensive Water-types such as Carracosta are actually good teammates because waterspam is good and Basculin beats a lot of common Water checks.

Other Options
=============
Also say Taunt prevents walls from recovering health. HP Electric can be used on physical sets too. Say specifically that Choice Band is mainly just outclassed by other physical Water-types and that is why Life Orb mixed is the main set. I guess you could mention Aqua Tail here as it does stuff like 2HKOing Lickilicky without entry hazards (73.4% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery), has a nice chance to 2HKO defensive Misdreavus, nice chance to OHKO Piloswine after rocks, etc. 20 extra base power is pretty useful.

Checks and Counters
===================
List Water-types first because they're the best checks to it. Say that faster Pokemon can be defeated with Aqua Jet if worn down too much.

Didn't really mean Costa and Barb take on Basculin's checks after a smash, I meant that between Basculin and especially Carracosta literally zero Water checks can hold them down because Basculin lures Poliwrath, Tangela, and Torterra while Carracosta beats Pelipper, Politoed, and most of the tier after smashing.

Missy, Lickilicky, and Piloswine are just examples so make sure you say that it does not just target them for those KOs. Also mention the downsides of Aqua Tail (lower accuracy and no flinch chance).

Checks and Counters
===================

**Water-types**: Also say how they take advantage of Basculin. Pelipper gets a free Defog, defensive Carracosta set up Stealth Rock or Shell Smash, etc.

**Residual Damage**: I don't think you need to put this so high. The order should probably be Water-types, Physical Tanks, Status, Electric-types, Faster Pokemon, Residual Damage. Residual damage is annoying but it's not that bad for Basculin.

**Electric-types**: Mention that Basculin loses momentum vs them because its Volt Switched on.

**Physical Tanks**: Again say how they take advantage of Basculin (Avalugg spins, Furfrou gains momentum with U-turn).

**Faster Pokemon**: List something else than Ninjask because it takes a ton from Aqua Jet.

[OVERVIEW]
  • Basculin has a great ability in Adabtability that boosts its Water-type moves. you're basically giving the overview description, i guess you can say it makes stab attacks rlly hard to switch into
  • Access to Adabtabilty-boosted priority in Aqua Jet allows it to pick off weakened threats. like? ninetales? weakened zeb? mention plz
  • It has access to great coverage moves such as Zen Headbutt and Ice Beam.
  • On the downside, it's very frail and along with its base Speed of 98, it is easily revenge killed by offensive Pokemon. like? common pkmn it struggles with?
  • It is walled by some bulky Water-types such as Carracosta and Pelipper. mention defensive costa specifically because lol offensive costa walling this thing
  • Unable to set up like a lot of the Water-types in PU can, such as Barbaracle, Carracosta, Simipour, and Huntail. meh i mean it hits harder off the bat, this doesn't even seem like a disadvantage b/c no wasterino turn. it can't sweep is what u should say because it has no method of boosting
in addition, it's frail af which you should really stress on here.

Set Details
========
  • Basculin utilizes max Attack EVs, which allows it to hit as hard as possible with its main physical attacks with a Life Orb.
  • Maximum Speed EVs along with a Naive nature allows you to outspeed opposing Pokemon below base 85 Speed such as Leafeon ? leafeon speed ties with you lol. A Naive nature is used over a Jolly nature so Ice Beam isn't weakened.
  • A Naughty nature is a viable option that gives you much more power at the cost of some Speed. but you won't be able to outspeed what?? mention downside cuz there's a reason it's not main
  • The last of the EVs are placed into Special Attack to allow you to 2HKO common Grass- and Dragon-types such as Tangela, Gourgeist-XL, and Fraxure, while also minimizing the amount of damage you take from Stealth Rock and Life Orb. um what? 4 spatk investment doesn't give u those kills, you get them anyway. you don't need to justify where you put the last 4 EVs and this sentence can be scrapped imo
  • Life Orb gives a boost to all of your attacking moves while letting you freely select different moves at the cost of recoil damage every turn. this is again c/ping the basic descriptions, mention the KOs it grants and why u need it in context of the meta.

  • Basculin is very frail and takes a lot of damage from the weakest of attacks, so don't leave it in against possible priority moves.

  • Slow Volt Switch, Baton Pass, and U-Turn users such as Probopass and Pelipper are great partners for Basculin because they allow Basculin a free switch in to fire off a strong attack. probopass can trap pawniard which is a nuisance for fish cuz sucker and pelipper walls poli 4 days, a small mention would do

  • A fully Special Attacking set with Hidden Power Electric can be used to lure physical walls such as Pelipper and Carracosta.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Water-types**: Water-types such as Pelipper and Carracosta are able to easily take Basculin's main STAB moves and retaliate back by wearing it down. The former can Defog on Basculin while the latter can use Shell Smash. really wouldn't give ss costa as a basc counter because no lefties. defensive costa does a great job as knock off/tox/lo recoil really hurts

**Physical Tanks**: Physical tanks such as Avalugg and Furfrou are able to take physical hits from Basculin and retaliate back with strong attacks. The former can take advantage of Basculin by using Rapid Spin while the latter can gain momentum with U-Turn.

could 'electric types' be clubbed in this? tbh most faster pkmn destroy basc (take simipour for example; btw, add simi here lol) so ya

**Residual Damage**: Residual damage such as Life Orb recoil, entry hazards, and chip damage from weaker attacks are able to quickly wear Basculin down, limiting the amount of times it is able to attack. you could mention pivoting around since you don't mention a particular mon, so at least giving some advice wud be nice

o_o

hp electric should be in moves/oo since its helpful to take out Pelipper for hazards offense and also hit poliwrath remotely hard

rest is fine 2/3

there's still some stuff incorrectly implemented (leafeon has 95 base spe and ties...) so you probably wanna look that over again Dundies
regardless, ill get to this soon maybe

Overview:
Dont say 'outclassed' by other water types, just say 'receives competition'

set:
SD: 'below base 89 Speed' - mistype i assume

oo:
'A Choice Banded set with Superpower over Ice Beam can be used on Basculin for sheer damage, but it is outclassed by other physical Water-types such as Barbaracle and Floatzel' - i definitely wouldnt say outclassed by either of these, as neither run cb, the reason to not run CB is to free up moves and to beat grass types
Remove Mold breaker as that removes a ton of basc's utility and is way too situational (helps vs 2 mons), and predictable (it says 'basc breaks the mold' in battle)

There isnt much more to add as this is solid

Basculin utilizes max Attack EVs, which allows it to hit as hard as possible with its main physical attacks with a Life Orb. Maximum Speed investment along with a Naive nature allows you to outspeed opposing Pokemon below base 89 Speed such as Leafeon.

just adding on one last thing, change the above ^ to "Basculin utilizes max Speed and Attack EVs as it 2HKOes Grass-types such as [examples] with uninvested Ice Beam regardless and bulk investment is unnecessary."

also removed the 89 base speed comment zzz it's a lot better this way imo anyway

Taunt is a viable option that allows Basculin to prevent status moves to be used against it from walls such as Gourgeist (this refers to Gourgeist-Average and since that one sucks afaik you might mean XL or S) and keeps them from recovering from using status or recovery moves.
