Baton Pass in DPP

As Aldaron suggested it's a good idea to have a seperate thread for Baton Pass in DPP, so here it is.

I'll just quickly go over the Baton Pass options in DPP:

Full Baton Pass
These things can be ridiculous to play against, here are some example replays from the original thread if you haven't seen them yet:

It's not particularly hard to win games with Baton Pass, dEnIsSsS winning a Smogon Tour with Baton Pass proves that it is a competitively viable team.

Potential things to nerf Full Baton Pass are limiting the amount of Baton Pass users, limiting a combination of moves + Baton Pass, or limiting certain boosts + Baton Pass.

Rock Polish / Agility + Swords Dance / Nasty Plot + Baton Pass
The second most problematic form of Baton Pass is this form of quickpass, most notably Gliscor. Basically, you get up Dual Screens, send out Gliscor with a Yache Berry, get 2 boosts and Baton Pass to something like Metagross who can simply win against a lot of teams with +2 Atk and +2 Speed. It might be worth shortly discussing if we want to nerf this, though I'm assuming we do.

Possible ways to take care of GliscorPass is banning boosts in Speed + other boosts + Baton Pass. Another option is a maximum of total boosts you can pass, eg when your stats are at +3 or more, you can't use Baton Pass anymore.

Mean Look + Baton Pass
This doesn't seem to be as problematic as the first two, but it's worth discussing. Since you can pass trapping in DPP, Mean Look + Baton Pass, while rarely utilized, can win you the game on occasions. However in all honesty I've rarely seen it outside of full Baton Pass chains so I can't say much about if something should be done.

I don't see any way to remove this other than simply banning Mean Look / Spider Web + Baton Pass.

One Boost / Substitute + Baton Pass
Regarding things like Substitute / Agility + Baton Pass Zapdos, Nasty Plot + Baton Pass Celebi, etc. These aren't really broken and are siply things that we should avoid having as 'collateral damage' and banning, in my opinion at least.


I feel like the safest way to go about it is limiting the number of Baton Pass users to 1 or 2, and adding a certain clause to avoid GliscorPass. The limit depends on if we feel like Agility Zapdos -> Nasty Plot Celebi -> Heatran is okay or not. Feels fine to me, but potentially could be a problem and then we could lower the limit to 1. As for restricting GliscorPass, I think it's best to just keep consistency with the other tiers as long as it works for DPP as well. I don't think there would be a major difference between the speed boost + other boost + baton pass or max 3 boosts + baton pass.
