Battling on the Laboratory (OU Warstory)

Hey there Smogonites! I'm zdrup15, a regular poster on the Scramble Challenge Thread and a OU battler (I'm also beginning to play UU just for fun) and Sapientia is, ah... well... I think he's an ok player xD.
On the end of August I created a team that, after some changes (thanks RMT forums), became pretty good and I've decided I wanted to ladder. After a while, laddering didn't seem funny anymore and recently I've only tried to battle Smogon Top Players. One day I was on Pokemon Lab (that thing is beautiful) and I decided to challenge Sapientia.
Against all the odds, the challenge was accepted and the battle started!

This battle was on the Pokemon Lab so all the edits were made by me and I didn't post the percentages because I didn't want to be inaccurate.

zdrup15's team:

(Sapientia's team will be at the end)

- Sleep Clause
- Freeze Clause
- OHKO Clause
- Evasion Clause
- Species Clause
- Strict Damage Clause
- Soul Dew Clause

Extraneous information will be mentioned at first instance then omitted.
Score will be shown after a pokemon faints: zdrup15 - Sapientia

Sapientia sent out Jirachi (lvl 100 Jirachi)!
zdrup15 sent out Machamp (lvl 100 Machamp ?)!

Ok, the battle starts and this isn't too bad for me. Almost every Jirachi leads I've faced are TrickScarf and they usually use SR on the 1st turn because they can't risk being locked on T-Wave or Iron Head and they don't want to Trick a Scarf to my Anti-Lead. In these situations, D-Punch away!

===============
Begin turn #1
Jirachi used Stealth Rock!
Pointed stones float in the air around your foe's team!
Machamp used DynamicPunch!
Jirachi lost 43% of its health!
Jirachi became confused!
Jirachi's Leftovers restored its health a little!
Jirachi regained 6% of its health!

Ok, it has Lefties instead but I'm still on top and now Sapientia will have to switch. I could keep D-punching because even if the switch in was a ghost I would cripple it next turn with Payback but I also want to have SR on the field right from the start. So I switch in my Heatran.

zdrup15 sent out Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ?)!
Pointed stones dug into Heatran!

Sapientia withdrew Jirachi!
Sapientia sent out Zapdos (lvl 100 Zapdos)!
Zapdos is exerting its Pressure!
Heatran's Leftovers restored its health a little!
Heatran regained 24/385 (6%) of its health!

Zapdos? It may be a threat if it carries T-Wave but otherwise it's just setup fodder. I'll use SR as planned.

===============
Begin turn #3
Zapdos used Substitute!
Zapdos lost 25% of its health!
Zapdos made a substitute!
Heatran used Stealth Rock!
Pointed stones float in the air around your foe's team!
Zapdos's Leftovers restored its health a little!
Zapdos regained 6% of its health!

Substitute is a move I don't see many Zapdos using and this made me think: should I switch in Flygon to see if it has T-Wave? No, switching in a ground type would be too predictable and HP Ice is a common move on Zapdos. Celebi? No, Heat Wave hurts a lot and behind a Sub it can't be paralyzed. I'll have to take the risk and let Heatran take a shock and then start racking up some damage.

===============
Begin turn #4
Zapdos used Thunderbolt!
Heatran lost 97/385 (25%) of its health!
Heatran used Roar!
Sapientia sent out Jirachi (lvl 100 Jirachi)!
Pointed stones dug into Jirachi!

Yes, apparently Zapdos doesn't have T-Wave and I Roar it to scout Sapientia's team. Unfortunately, Jirachi comes out and I'm forced to switch in my Machamp because this time I'm sure it has T-Wave and Heatran walls the 2 pokemons I've seen so it has to be on the top of its game.

Sapientia switches in the SS guy and this end up being much better than I thought: I'll have another chance to D-punch and something will be confused because he won't risk losing T-Tar this early.

Zapdos enters the field again and this is a very good chance to try to finish it because it can't switch out again without becoming death fodder. Of course it could Roost off the damage and my Ice Punch wouldn't do much to it but this is a chance too good to pass because Zapdos can be really annowing against my team.

6-5

Yes, the electric bird is now down and Machamp has completed its task: defeating at least one pokemon per match. Now Jirachi comes in and I start to think if Machamp is still usefull. Well, till now it defeats Jirachi and destroys T-Tar so I decide I will stay in front of Jirachi because I can still take 2 Iron Heads and all I need is a D-Punch to make it death fodder.

===============
Begin turn #8
Jirachi used Iron Head!
A critical hit!
Machamp lost 231/381 (60%) of its health!
Machamp flinched!

... yeah, I shouldn't be surprised because this was done by the haxiest pokemon of the game. Anyways, this sucks because Machamp could have been very important.
New plans: Machamp can't take another Iron Head and I decide it's now officially death fodder so I'll switch. All that Sapientia knows about my team is that I have a Sp. Bulky Heatran and I still need to be sure Jirachi doesn't have T-Wave to know if Heatran can eliminate it. This seems the perfect occasion to find out.

Ok, this turn didn't go as planned and Sapientia is now on top because I can't risk being locked on EQ so early in the game and I'm forced to U-Turn out of here.

Ah, well played. Flygon ensures the mementum is still on my opponent's side no matter what but at least I managed to lower its attack. But now I have to switch again because most Flygons have T-Punch (mine has) especially for Gyarados and I don't want to take the risk to lose it. My safest option is Heatran because Sapientia can't lock Flygon on EQ or my Gyarados would be able to setup till +2 and possibly sweep.

Ok, this may be an advantage of not being a famous player: the top players sometimes take us for noobs and make mistakes they normally wouldn't. All in all, my Heatran is back with only a scratch and ready to scout the opponent's team once again. ROAR!!!

And I'm top again! Jirachi comes in and this time I decide I won't maintain the pattern: I will stay in and try to finish it so that Gyarados and Heatran can run without fearing T-Wave. I have both Earth Power and Lava Plume; both can finish it and EP can do more damage to T-Tar if it switches in but I select Lava Plume for another reason: burn. Yes, if Sapientia decides to switch in T-Tar I have a 30% chance of making it useless for the rest of the match!

In retrospective, I should have taken into account that the other 70% chances would put my opponent on a very good position to deal some damage to my team... Oh well, time to think again!
I've shown 3 pokemons of my team till now: a Gyarados, a Flygon and a Heatran. All of them would hate to take a STAB SE, Flygon would hate a STAB Crunch and Heatran wouldn't have time to hate a EQ because it would faint immediatly. However, by now, my opponent should be cursing Heatran and I think he'll do anything to finish it. Therefore, he'll probably opt for EQ so I'll switch to Gyarados.

YES! I predict well and Gyarados enters the field with the chance to deal some damage! The way I play Gyarados is almost always the same: the 1st time it enters the field, I always select Waterfall or SE (the other moves are Taunt and DD) because some of its checks like ScarfRotom and Starmie aren't very bulky and take major damage from these attacks. I have a T-Tar in front of me so I go for the Waterfall.

Great, it's Starmie and, probably, an offensive one (Trick Scarfs can cripple Snorlax that is my biggest counter to it) as I don't see Lefties. So it's time for the big man to enter the field!

Jirachi comes in and somehow manages to resist a giant body slam without any major problems. However, I decide that I will make Jirachi my path to victory! I will setup on it and proceed to sweep Sapientia's team. Or, at least, Snorlax will die trying.

Ok, I was mentally prepared for that, I guess. Snorlax ended up being the LVP of my team due to bad luck and stupidity. At least I've crippled it and now Flygon should be able to finish the job. But, wait! I still haven't seen his team and I still don't wanna risk locking myself on something dangerous. Machamp will now be forced to come back to the field only to be killed by Jirachi so that I can keep the momentum and kill Jirachi. Then I'll bring Heatran onto the field and FINALLY FINISH THE JOB!

Ok, I know I was really annoyed by that damn Jirachi and I wanted to KO something but this wasn't what I meant. But I guess I can also have my bit of hax and this is great: I've KOed T-Tar and can now send my last Pokemons to the field to finish this damn Starmie as it will probably use either Hydro Pump or T-bolt (Sapientia won't use ice beam because Flygon is also KOed by Hydro Pump).

This turned out even better than I was expecting again! Celebi is now out and I will proceed to kill these star(mie). Or... WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS, MY FRIENDS AND WE'LL... what?! What do you mean it's not over? I killed that thing 28 turns later and you tell me it's not over??? xD
Jokes aside, I'm now a bit nervous about his last pokemon because, if he has hidden it so well, it must have the potential to destroy me once the conditions are right.
He brings his Flygon in an attempt to regain the momentum and I'm now faced with a very difficult decision: what to do?
I can't switch to Celebi because he'll probably U-turn out killing my poor onion and leaving me with 2 pokes that can be swept by a lucario or a metagross.
Gyarados is not an option because Starmie is still alive and it may come in forcing me to switch again.
Well, I guess all I have to do is stay in and try because, if he U-turns, I'll certainly kill the switch in. If he doesn't, GG.

It paid off!!! His hidden pokemon was Heatran and it entered the field to be EQed to death! This was a risky decision but now I'll certainly win the game! He has 2 pokemons: a Flygon and a Starmie.
I have: Flygon (locked on EQ), Heatran, Celebi and Gyarados.
I'm sure he'll use Outrage because he needs to make sure Flygon dies to have any chance to win. Knowing this, I switch in Gyarados to intimidate the Flygon so that I can kill it with Heatran while it's locked.

nice warstory, I like it :)
I guess this was the only challange I ever accepted on the Smogon Server lol

Missplayed this in a lot of points and why is there no warstory on smogon where I win the match ;_;

Nice warstory, zdrup. Sprites are always nice, but this story was easy to follow any, because it was well-written. Good effort.

Other than that, I just hope you weren't practising with your scramble team!

That's how I feel with the two out of three matches I lost on YouTube lol but you played very well and so did the OP.

Only thing I was wondering is how low the health was on each pokemon but all I had to do was look at damage calcs.

Great battle man, you looked like you controlled it in the beginning and then he put the edge on you later in the match but you kept your cool.

Thanks guys! I will certainly keep looking for good battles so I hope I can write another Warstory soon.

Noob question: when you U-Turn, don't you get to pick the Pokemon you send out (like Baton Pass)? Didn't your opponent know you didn't switch?

I think that Sapientia either misplayed or Sapientia thought that it was a Flygon and it had stayed in to Outrage either one of those two work i guess. Or Sapintia just thought that he might U-turn.

Nice read. My only complaints are lack of sprites, which doesn't matter too much, and how the comments started to die down at the end. Other than that, nice battle and comments for the most part.

Haha, thought it was pretty funny when you had your Snorlax up against his Jirachi and was like "I'll just set up on this Jirachi, no worries." Then Jirachi kept flinching you and you were like "OMG I NEED TO KILL THIS NOW."

In general, pretty good (and entertaining) story
