Goal of this thread: This thread aims to help introduce ways to defeat some common teams that have reputations for being quite solid in the current metagame. Even the best teams have some flaws, which here are BTT we strive to identify to hopefully help players who struggle with defeating solid teams fine a way to do so.

Commencement: So, essentially how this is going to work is I am going to post a team that I have asked someone for or they volunteered, and in the following week users will post cores of two or three pokemon that are adept at defeating the team. Then, users will vote on what core they think handles the team the best at the end of the week. Whichever core gets the most votes will be put into the hall of fame, and a new team will be posted at the start of the week.

Rules:
  • Cores should contain 2 or 3 pokemon, not any more or less.
  • Sets that deviate from Smogon are certainly fine, but please refrain from posting gimmicky or unviable sets
  • For this thread, like many others in the RU forum, you simply vote by posting the name of the user who posted your chosen nomination.
  • You may not vote for your own nomination.

Current Team
Alright, the results are in! Thanks to everyone who participated!
Based Honker!

Anyway, time to move on to week 7!

This team was created by NaCl as a way to quickly climb the ladder. This team focuses on Choice Specs Meloetta's tendency to pressure bulkier builds while choice scarf flygon acts as a potent cleaner and momentum grabber. Gurdurr can also break down fatter teams or one that heavily rely on physical attackers, while venusaur acts as another hole puncher as well as a no-mess solution to Alomamola. Diancie and Blastoise form a nice defensive backbone as well as both hazard addition and removal. I ran Alomomola while laddering over Blastoise, but I decided to stick to the origional team for this.

Okay, for week one of this, you'll have about 2 weeks to post your noms, since this is being created on a Tuesday, and the voting will start a week from Saturday. Anyway, the first team we have is Arifeen's Last Dinosaur Offense. This powerful offensive team utilizes Scarfed Tyrantrum to threaten offensive teams and a creative pick in Swords Dance Samurott to break down stall. It's definitely good, but can we break it? Let's find out!

Okay first of all really cool, and just as a recommendation, Put the team in OP to, you don't have to do it this round since it isn't

Virizion @ Lum Berry
Ability: Justified
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Leaf Blade
- Close Combat
- Zen Headbutt

PLS BAN ME (Sharpedo) @ Life Orb
Ability: Speed Boost
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Mild Nature
- Protect
- Ice Beam
- Crunch
- Hydro Pump

Basically this core just outpressures everything, Sharpedo deals hefty amounts to TTrum, Venu, MLix and Sigilyph while Virizion deals with Sam MLix, TTrum and Gurdurr better.

That's a great team by Arifeen, but it has almost no switchins to the terror that is Specs Meloetta. Poliwrath walls Tyrantrum and Mega Steelix, the team's main checks to Specs Meloetta. It also completely shuts down Samurott. These two mons alone are enough to break Arifeen's team, but I'm adding Houndoom to trap Sigilyph, leaving the team with absolutely no chance of beating Meloetta + Poliwrath. Houndoom itself is difficult to deal with, since it's pretty easy to switch on a predicted priority move from Samurott or Gurdurr.

Meloetta @ Choice Specs

Pretty annoying core for this team to have, Sigilyph can donk Venusaur, Gurdurr, take huge chunks from Samurott, while Sharpedo can deal with Tyrantrum, Mega Steelix, and Sigilyph. I have to rely on Dark Pulse from Sigilyph, or get Gurdurr in on Sharpedo, predict a switch to Sigilyph and Knock Off it with Gurdurr. Dealing with Sigilyph is kinda hard. I usually lead with Venusaur, switch to Steelix, and then to Tyrantrum. Nevertheless, these 2 mons are pretty dangerous for me, and I have to play very carefully to play around.

This is a pretty nice team bud sadly this duo destroys it. With specs both of these pokemon demolish the team. Fire blast from delphox does a ton to Venusaur and Mega Lix managing to OHKO both of them. Let's not forget delphoxs other great moves such as grass knot which is enough to OHKO Samurott and psychic being able to OHKO gurdurr and even tyrantrum! Now exploud on the other hand is just as dangerous, Boomburst being to OHKO Samurott, gurdurr and sigilyph where as fire blast is enough to OHKO venu and focus blast OHKOing the rest.

Delphox @ Choice Specs
Ability: Magician
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Dazzling Gleam

^ what you just posted isn't by any means somewhat of a 'duo' or a 'core' , i mean that's obviously very easy to go ahead and stack broken wallbreakers in two or three slots, but i don't think that's the purpose of this thread, you'd at least base it off actual in-game conditions. for the record, arifeen can easily get his choice scarf tyrantrum out and grab two kills in a row, samurott can land one SD on delphox and get two kills, and you don't mention anything for that. note that sigilyph also carries dark pulse.

Obviously no one asks you to cover every single members of the team, offensive pressure is a thing, but your core just does neither, and it doesnt' even share anything of a defensive synergy, delphox cant be considered a fighting check without a scarf, and won't overwhelm the opponent even with exploud's wallbreaking without the extra speed - scarf tyrantrum. another change i'd consider is accurate would adding Mawile's pivot set on to the core. Not only does it easily switch into Tyrantrum's hits, but it also succesfully grabs momentum for the two other sweepers, making the core sound already much more pointful. also change exploud's nature for Timid so that you have an actual answer for sd samurott, thanks to its good natural bulk it will comfortably eat up +3 (considering mawile intimitades and straight dry pass over it as it SDs again) or +2 Torrent boosted aqua-jets. hope i helped!

Mawile @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 224 Def / 32 Spe
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Play Rough / Iron Head
- Baton Pass
- Sucker Punch / Super Fang

--------------------------------------------------------

+
+

Glalie massively threatens out arifeen's team, its nice speed ensures it easily forces out sigilyph/venusaur and drops refrigerate-boosted moves, and can proceed to set spikes for itself to wallbreak later on, as Hitmontop guarantees the hazard control against both mega-steelix and scarf tyrantrum. Delphox is a fine backbone against arifeen's two hitmontop switchins, nicely checks Gurdurr and can potentially go for the Scarf Psychic late-game-spam thanks to the spikes. Finally Glalie easily keeps SD Samurott in check with freeze-dry as +3 and even +5 aqua-jet would never kill from full.

Glalie @ Glalitite
Ability: Inner Focus
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Double-Edge
- Freeze-Dry
- Ice Shard
- Spikes

Hitmontop @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Close Combat
- Sucker Punch
- Toxic

Delphox @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Psychic
- Dazzling Gleam

Okay! I think that everyone that wants to has put in a nomination, so the voting period has officially begun! Feel free to vote for any core you want. Also, I'm not opposed to a sentence or two on why you chose that core, but please try not to write me a whole paragraph.

Anyway, the options are as follows:

SlaySlenderDragonXD

warzoid

Arifeen

Sanjay.

Scythe.

I'd also like to make the announcement that Scythe. is now the Co-host of this thread! He's going to be choosing the team next week, and I'm pretty sure we'll alternate from there. Have fun voting!

As for my vote, it was very, very, slim, but I think I'm going to have to go with warzoid, mostly due to the fact that this team struggles with a pursuit trapper+Poliwrath

Hello everyone! Sorry for the little wait, I'll finally get to be co-hosting this :]

Alright, so I was pretty interested by this project in the first place, its purpose will definitely help a lot the RU community improve its teambuilding and game process skills. However that does require a quite constant amount of proper teams feed, which is quite lacking since there isn't much shwocased RU teams lately. Therefore Thatwackycruton and I decided to spot the most successful SPL RU teams as subjects for each week with the cooperation of the players themselves; discover Week 2's subject!

There we go with the team Windsong used against 49 in week 3 of SPL, which features a powerful offensive core led by Specs Meloetta, alongside two cleaners in Swords Dance Fletchinder and LO Pursuit Sneasel to struggle against opposing Psychics. A solid combo supported by the defensive core of Mola-SpDef Diancie-Fast bulky Flygon. Pretty good balance that has proven its effectiveness against the great builder 49 is.

Here's the replay: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/smogtours-ru-116692

As always, make sure to read the rules before posting and drop viable content, basically taking actual in-game conditions and preferably cores already very well known for their viability. Don't forget to note that Sharpedo and Abomasite are now banned. Have fun!

Abomasnow @ Life Orb
Ability: Soundproof
EVs: 84 Spe / 252 Atk / 172 HP
Adamant Nature
- Ice Shard
- Swords Dance
- Wood Hammer
- Earthquake

Rhyperior @ Lum Berry
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 252 Atk / 248 Spe / 8 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Megahorn
- Stone Edge
- Rock Polish

Abomasnow's Dual STABs are super effective against half of this wonderful team, making it a huge threat. Alomomola and Meloetta locked into Hyper Voice are a free SD for Abomasnow, and both Fletchinder and Diancie are free set-ups for Rhyperior, who takes care of Fletchinder, Sneasel, and Meloetta with little trouble. Ideally, you start sweeping with Rhyperior to try and remove Fletchinder and Sneasel from the equation so Abomasnow can sweep.

252+ Atk Life Orb Abomasnow Wood Hammer vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Diancie: 312-369 (102.6 - 121.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

In short, the two of these Pokémon have easy set-up opportunites and can take down a majority of the Pokémon on your opponent's side once set up. Enjoy!

Team in general is pretty but the bad thing is that the team is relatively passive and pretty unresponsive in terms on fighting types switch-ins (sadly meloetta isnt a fighting type switch-in) and fletchinder is far from one, ending on the team relying too much on fletch meaning it can just revenge kill most of them. So a strong fighting type + a pursuit trapper is a combination that can put a huge dent to this team. One in particular:

+

Hitmonlee @ Life Orb
Ability: Reckless
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
IVs: 29 HP
- Mach Punch
- Knock Off
- High Jump Kick
- Sucker Punch

Sneasel @ Life Orb
Ability: Inner Focus
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
IVs: 29 HP
- Pursuit
- Knock Off
- Iron Tail
- Icicle Crash

My boy hitmonlee puts tons of work against this team, double priority hitmonlee in particular can pretty much finish this team with a small misprediction on the fletchinder after rocks or if weakened. Many pursuit trappers pair well with hitmonlee (spiritomb is another good one) but sneasel was chosen here cause it has the ability to pressure flygon, forces mola in to get rid of its item which helps pressure it, and have iron tail to get rid of diancie. It can also easily get rid of meloetta provided a safe switch-in. Hitmonlee is a cool mon, shame isnt as used as in his XY days.

Alomomola @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 120 HP / 136 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Wish
- Protect
- Scald
- Toxic

Spiritomb @ Black Glasses
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 212 HP / 252 Atk / 44 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Sucker Punch
- Pursuit
- Foul Play
- Will-O-Wisp

I decided to use a more defensive approach to handling this team, since the first thing i noticed was that alomomola really did a number to his team, and meloetta was his only way of taking advantage of alomomola, that's where the spiritomb shows up. Alomomola can take on any pokemon 1 on 1 except meloetta (which it can still toxic on the switch), and click protect whenever meloetta is inside and go to spiritomb (which this melo cant touch) or force a predict from the meloetta side that is heavily in alo/tomb's favour since if meloetta doubles back to avoid tomb, alomomola is a free switch in to everything else and can protect on melo anytime.
Additional interesting things to note: this alomomola is the perfect switch in to windsong's alomomola since if this mola gets burnt, flygon cant toxic it, as well as if mola knocks off this one, sneasel's knock off will be considerably weaker and mola then becomes an even better counter to sneasel.

Okay, so I'm allowed to do this one, right?

I'll admit that these two are a little specialized for this team, but steel wing fletch runs through this team pretty efficiently alone, since alomomola lacks toxic. However, Eelectross made a solid partner to allow fletchinder to come in via slow volt switch. Not much else to say besedes the fact that I will admit that this core struggles a little with switching in to meloetta, but Eel beats in 1v1.

Fletchinder
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 152 HP / 248 Atk / 76 Def / 28 SpD / 4 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Acrobatics
- Steel Wing
- Roost

Eelektross @ Assault Vest
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpA
Quiet Nature
- Volt Switch
- Flamethrower
- Hidden Power Ice
- Knock Off
