I'd stay out of the worst parts of LA...hell I'd just avoid the clusterfuck that's LA in general unless you're just passing through (and perhaps with a driver, traffic is bleh).
Thumbs up for the Pacific Coast highway, great scenery and lots of fun, especially in a top down. Lots of Northern CA stuff is great to look at. I'd say Disneyland if you're into that, otherwise there's lots of other fun places.
