Bronzong [0/3]

CorruptedOmega

Banned deucer.
[OVERVIEW]
  • Bronzong is, at best, a mediocre Trick Room setter.
    • It lacks the massive offensive presence of other setters such as Hoopa Unbound, Reuniclus, and Gardevoir.
    • It lacks the combination of pure bulk and recovery like Porygon2 and Jellicent.
    • It faces severe competition from Jirachi, who boasts the same typing while having more well rounded stats and a better supportive movepool with Follow Me.
    • It runs into similar problems that most Trick Room setters run into, namely Spore, Taunt, strong Dark- or Ghost-type attackers, etc.
    • It often becomes a momentum suck, since it doesn't deal much damage and can only really hit Fairy-types for meaningful damage.
      • Even neutral targets take pitiful damage from Bronzong.
  • What Bronzong does have, however, is a superior defensive typing and ability.
    • Steel-typing is a huge boon in a metagame where top tier threats such as Kangaskhan, Diancie, and others run rampant.
    • Bronzong's ability Levitate allows it to ignore the Ground-types which would otherwise check it, unlike Jirachi.
    • Bronzong can provide great momentum with Explosion, which other Trick Room setters can not.
  • Although Bronzong firmly holds its own distinctive niche, you may want to consider using a different Trick Room setter.
    • Trick Room teams lacking a bulky Steel-type or teams that are weak to Diancie benefit from its use.
[SET]
name: Defensive Trick Room Setter
move 1: Gyro Ball
move 2: Zen Headbutt / Explosion
move 3: Trick Room
move 4: Protect
item: Safety Goggles
ability: Levitate
nature: Relaxed
evs: 252 HP / 116 Def / 140 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
  • Gyro Ball is Bronzong's primary STAB, hitting Fairy-types such as Gardevoir and Diancie hard.
  • Zen Headbutt allows Bronzong deal with Fighting-types such as Keldeo and Breloom and beat Amoonguss 1v1.
  • Explosion is an alternative over Zen Headbutt, allowing it to deal meaningful damage and create momentum when it would otherwise be dead weight.
    • Furthermore Explosion gives you a free switch into a Trick Room attacker of your choosing.
    • Use it cautiously, however, since it comes at the cost of Bronzong fainting.
  • Trick Room is an absolutely necessity; if you aren't running Trick Room you should not be using this Pokemon.
  • Protect let's an ally deal with an opposing Pokemon that severely threatens Bronzong.
    • Be wary because using Protect wastes precious Trick Room turns.
Set Details
========
  • 252 HP EVs maximize overall bulk.
  • 140 Special Defense EVs allow it to take a Dark Pulse from Hydreigon.
  • The remaining EVs are dumped in Defense.
  • Safety Goggles lets Bronzong ignore Spore and reliably set Trick Room.
  • Levitate gives Bronzong a very useful Ground immunity, allowing it not to worry about Earthquake and Earth Power, which would otherwise severely damage it.
  • A Relaxed nature is used to boost Defense, make Bronzong as slow as possible for Trick Room, and boost Gyro Ball's power.
Usage Tips
========
  • Bronzong works well as a lead to get Trick Room set up straight away.
  • Once Trick Room is up you should probably switch Bronzong out and bring in a strong attacker so you can make use of your limited Trick Room turns.
    • Explosion can be used to do this while getting off big damage.
  • If facing a Taunt user Bronzong and its partner should play around it while still trying to get Trick Room up.
Team Options
========
  • Fake Out support allow Bronzong to safely and reliably set Trick Room.
    • Kangaskhan's raw power helps make up for Bronzong's lack thereof, and it can take opposing Fake Outs if it's running Inner Focus.
    • Scrafty provides Intimidate support and checks Dark- and Ghost-types both offensivly and defensivly. Bronzong also beats Fairy-types.
  • Fire-types make good partners since they can beat the Steel-type that otherwise wall Bronzong.
    • Heatran in particular is a great partner, since it can fire off incredibly powerful Eruptions and appreciates Trick Room support.
    • Volcanion beats Fire-types as well, and in return Bronzong can OHKO Mega Diancie.
  • If using a full Trick Room team, Bronzong definitely needs another setter to work beside in case it gets knocked out or has an unfavorable match up.
    • More offensive Trick Room setters such as Hoopa-U and Reuniclus work well.
  • Dark killers
    • Sylveon makes a good partner since it hits like a truck and appreciates Trick Room support.
    • Scrafty (see above)
  • Ghost killers
    • Scrafty (see above)
    • Hydreigon cause perfect synergy + Zong beats Fairies
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • Alternatively, Heatproof can be run over Levitate since your opponent will most likely not target Bronzong with Ground-type moves (expecting Levitate), but this is not advised since it makes it much less good of a switch-in to Diancie, Landorus, and others.
  • Gravity removes your opponents' Ground immunities and allows your allies to hit more inaccurate moves, although it should only be used in conjunction with Heatproof since Levitate will be rendered useless under Gravity.
  • Sunny Day can be run to boost the power of allies Fire-type moves, such as Heatran's Eruption. It also helps against Rain teams.
  • Skill Swap is a useful, albeit situational supportive option with a variety of applications.
    • You can use it to replace an opposing Pokemon's ability and essentially neuter it, for example by taking away Kangaskhan's Parental Bond or Sylveon's Pixilate.
    • You can use it to give Levitate to one of your allies, granting them a useful immunity to Ground-type moves.
    • You can use it to shuffle around Intimidate if either you or your opponent has a Pokemon on the field with that ability.
  • Sitrus Berry gives Bronzong a burst of recovery, but is generally not advised since losing immunity to Spore really hinders its effectivness as a Trick Room setter.
  • Colbur Berry allows Bronzong to take strong Dark-type moves such as Hoopa's Hyperspace Fury and Bisharp's Knock Off, which it couldn't otherwise.
Checks and Counters
===================
  • **Steel-type Pokemon**:
    • Aegislash, Bisharp, and Heatran all threaten Bronzong immensely and take negligible damage from its attacks. Furthermore, Aegislash and Heatran can freely set up a Substitute in front of it.
  • **Dark-type Pokemon**:
    • Dark-types like Bisharp, Hydreigon, and Scrafty can heavily damage Bronzong or even OHKO it. It also doesn't like losing its Safety Goggles to Knock Off, since then Amoonguss or Breloom can put it asleep and prevent it from setting Trick Room.
  • **Ghost-type Pokemon**:
    • Ghost-types such as Aegislash and Gengar threaten Bronzong with super effective damage, similar to Dark-types. Gengar in particular is a good answer to Bronzong, since Mega Gengar can trap it, kill it, and prevent it from setting Trick Room latter, while regular Gengar can simply Taunt it.
  • **Fire-type Pokemon**:
    • As long as Bronzong isn't running Heatproof, Fire-types such as Charizard and Heatran can threaten it quite a bit, and they also resist Gyro Ball.
  • **Taunt**:
    • Taunt users like Thundurus, Keldeo, and the aforementioned Gengar make Bronzong a sitting duck, unable to use three of its four moves.

Is a 3hko from Heatran really a notable benchmark when Bronzong does shit back, there's a 27% chance at least one heat wave will miss and a 20% chance (factoring in misses) at least one Heat Wave will burn? Not to mention that it's possible Bronzong won't always be receiving spread damage.

It's just such a situational benchmark to even mention.

How about upping spdef a bit for: 252 SpA Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 164+ SpD Bronzong: 186-218 (55 - 64.4%)
Turn this into an almost guaranteed 3hko through Sitrus with: 252 SpA Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 184+ SpD Bronzong: 180-212 (53.2 - 62.7%)

After moving those 20 EVs, Zong still lives the most relevant borderline KO physical attack I can think of: 252+ Atk Bisharp Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 72 Def Bronzong: 282-332 (83.4 - 98.2%)

You might be interested in 248 HP / 56 Def / 204 SpD, which guarantees both attacks:
  • 252+ Atk Bisharp Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 248 HP / 56 Def Bronzong: 284-336 (84.2 - 99.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
  • 252 SpA Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 248 HP / 204+ SpD Bronzong: 176-210 (52.2 - 62.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Sitrus Berry recovery

am check

[OVERVIEW]
  • Point out when you would want to use this over Jirachi, since the two are so similar in typing and utility: more offensive pressure, the ability to explode and do huge damage while providing a free switch, Skill Swap i guess, Levitate, etc
  • Make note of how hard this thing gets walled by anything that resists steel (and normal, if you have explosion)
[SET]
  • Carbonific's spread (248 HP / 56 Def / 204 Sp Def) seems really good, I say add it if QC approves it
  • Explosion should be slashed in front of, or at least behind, Skill Swap, in my opinion. Allows Zong to create momentum when it is being a giant momentum suck, which is often
  • You misspelled Levitate lol but I'm sure you would've caught that at some point, not a huge deal
[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
  • Talk about why Explosion is good if you decide to add it, I explained why it is good already
Set Details
  • When you write this out, type out the specific EVs, e.g. 252 HP EVs and 204 Special Defense EVs, as it's common practice, not a big deal tho
Usage Tips
  • Be careful when you tell people to stay in on super effective hits. It'd be better to say people can stay in on super effective hits if they are special, because this thing gets dropped by Hoopa/Bisharp/Physical Fires.
  • Also be careful of telling people to make "100% have-to" plays. Saying a taunt forces Bronzong out isn't always true, if you can gyro something for big damage or go for a big big boom boom or just protect. Maybe reword it to say that Taunt/Spore is something that Bronzong and its partner need to play around?
Team Options
  • Scrafty is also a good option because Bronzong beats Fairies
  • Name more Dark-type killers than just sylveon
  • Add things that beat Ghost-types
  • Add things that beat the sleep users, so fire or flying types to beat Amoonguss, or just note under your heatran/Volcanion section that these beat amoonguss and breloom
Other Options
  • Safeguard seems super bad, remove it
  • Explosion should at the very very least be here
Checks and Counters
  • Fire types?

Good work n10sit :]

Just talked with QC and set should be:
name: Trick Room
move 1: Gyro Ball
move 2: Zen Headbutt / Explosion
move 3: Trick Room
move 4: Protect
item: Safety Goggles
ability: Levitate
nature: Relaxed
evs: 252 HP / 116 Def / 140 SpD

So update Moves / Set Details to reflect that, and then follow this commented version of n10sit's check (comments/edits in bold):
[OVERVIEW]
  • Point out when you would want to use this over Jirachi, since the two are so similar in typing and utility: more offensive pressure, the ability to explode and do huge damage while providing a free switch, Levitate, etc
  • Make note of how little damage this thing does against resisted / neutral targets
[SET]
  • Just implement the one above
[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
  • Update with moves in the set (ZHB for things like Keldeo that might try to Taunt you or Amoon to take advantage of your Goggles)
Set Details
  • When you write this out, type out the specific EVs and update with the given spread (lives Hydrei Dark Pulse, rest in Def)
  • No need to mention 0 Spe IVs, as that will be automatically implemented on PS! and is considered common knowledge
Usage Tips
  • Be careful when you tell people to stay in on super effective hits - Bronzong is super tanky, but it will drop to the strongest hits (LO Hyperspace Fury, for example)
  • Also be careful of telling people to make "100% have-to" plays. Maybe reword it to say that Taunt/Spore is something that Bronzong and its partner need to play around?
Team Options
  • Scrafty is also a good option because Bronzong beats Fairies
  • Name more Dark-type killers than just sylveon
  • Add things that beat Ghost-types
  • Add things that beat the sleep users, so fire or flying types to beat Amoonguss, or just note under your heatran/Volcanion section that these beat amoonguss and breloom - No longer necessary, since new item is goggles
Other Options
  • Safeguard seems super bad, remove it
  • Mention Gravity as a move option when discussing Heatproof, can work well with powerful Ground-type attackers or Pokemon with inaccurate attacks
  • Skill Swap should be moved to here, potentially with Mental Herb
  • Add Sitrus; Colbur
Checks and Counters
  • Fire types?
  • Update the **x-types** tags to say **x-type Pokemon**
  • **Dark-type Pokemon** should talk about how losing its Goggles to Knock Off makes it easier to prevent TR
  • Remove the **Sleep** tag
Tag me on here or send me a message on PS when this is implemented, since we're recommending a set change I want to look over this again before I give 1/3

When making a Team Options section, it's advised that we should generalize then name examples unless a mon shows a specific niche. This isn't the case with Heatran, which also does the same things you said for Volcanion. Just simply say "things can deal with Steels" and name Volcanion and Tran. This also applies for your Sylveon bullet; instead of only naming Sylveon, you could've said instead "things that beat Dark" such as Fairy-types x, y, and z. Heck, you could've probably got a spot to drop Fighting-types in the same sentence, too.

Also, remove stuff talking about Skill Swap in Usage Tips and Team Options, if any. It's not on the main set anymore. Also, fix this particular line:
  • If using a full Trick Room team, Bronzong definitely needs another setter to work beside in case it gets knocked out, preferably one immune Spore. Reuniclus or any setter with Goggles can work well.
Remove the bit saying that an immunity to Spore is preferred as the main item is Safety Goggles, making that recommendation unnecessary. Also, in addition to having another option when Bronzong gets KOed, having another TR setter is also important for times when Bronzong has an unfavorable matchp. Be sure to mention that.

k

I don't think Fire-types deserve a checks and counters tag since Zong often times runs Heatproof. Even then they're not especially notable in checking it.

Yeah I'm sorry I'm gonna have to agree with that. The first check being so long + that not even being all of it, combined with that post makes me think that you aren't a suitable writer for this :/

QC Reject 3/3, I'm moving this. Feel free to PM me with any questions.
