Bug Arceus (Analysis)

[Overview]

Behold! The mighty Arceus reveals His perception of all other life on this miserable sphere He treads upon! In His glory He takes a form mirroring that perception, and He has found you to be lacking. Bow down, like the pitiful insects He has judged you to be, and marvel at a predator that no amount of natural selection could ever produce. Even in this weakened state, Arceus strikes down the impure and defies logical thought in the same fell swoop, and the ground itself stills at His approach. Do not be lulled into a sense of false security at the sight of this aspect of the God of Pokemon, for His mere presence in any incarnation is always a terror to behold.

move 2: X-Scissor
move 3: Stone Edge / Substitute / Cosmic Power
move 4: Recover / Earthquake
item: Insect Plate
nature: Jolly
evs: 100 HP / 100 Atk / 100 Def / 100 SpD / 100 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Bug Arceus has the potential to be a menacing Swords Dance user. X-Scissor and Stone Edge offer excellent coverage together, hitting nearly every Pokemon in the metagame for neutral damage, while a Jolly nature allows Bug Arceus to outpace positive base 100 Speed Pokemon. Swords Dance Bug Arceus may seem inferior to Swords Dance Ghost Arceus at first glance, however Bug Arceus has many notable strengths over its Ghost-type counterpart. Bug Arceus is not weak to Ghost- or Dark-type attacks, such as Pursuit, and can hit Dark- and Psychic-type Pokemon super effectively with one attack. In addition, no type is immune to its STAB, and its Bug typing provides an ever useful Ground-type resistance.

X-Scissor is the primary move on the set due to STAB. Swords Dance is the crux of the set, allowing Bug Arceus to further bolster its already solid Attack. X-Scissor's damage output may seem lackluster at first, but Bug Arceus's bulk, respectable defense typing, and Recover allow it to obtain multiple Attack boosts with Swords Dance. Stone Edge rounds off the set and gives Bug Arceus near perfect coverage; it hits Flying- and Ghost-types who resist X-Scissor for neutral damage. Earthquake can be used over Recover for coverage against Steel-types, but the lack of recovery is offsetting, especially since Bug Arceus is weak to Stealth Rock. Cosmic Power can be used over Stone Edge as it enables Bug Arceus to withstand even more hits, while Substitute is an option to block status. Dragon Claw can also be used in place of Stone Edge for a 100% accurate move to use against Dragon-type Pokemon, and it hits Palkia and Dialga for more damage. However, replacing Stone Edge means that Pokemon such as Shaymin-S, Lugia, and Ho-Oh will become much more problematic. The last option to consider is Overheat, which can be used to fry Skarmory and Forretress, who are otherwise capable of taking several hits and laying down entry hazards.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Swords Dance Bug Arceus has a few counters capable of stopping it cold. Garchomp outpaces Bug Arceus and can hit it with a super effective Stone Edge. Groudon can be an efficient partner in order to deal with Garchomp and take Rock-type attacks aimed at Bug Arceus, but its sunlight makes opposing Fire attacks stronger. Choice Scarf Kyogre can switch in on Bug Arceus and use Water Spout or Surf for devastating damage. Latios and Latias make good partners for Bug Arceus since they are able to take Water attacks from Kyogre and resist its Fire-type weakness. Dialga is able to switch in with ease and use Fire Blast to KO Bug Arceus; Giratina can also safely switch in and burn Bug Arceus with Will-O-Wisp. Skarmory can take a +2 Stone Edge and phaze Bug Arceus or set up entry hazards against it. While Forretress can't do much in return, it can also setup entry hazards. For all of these reasons, Heatran is given a nod as an excellent teammate as it can switch into Fire and Flying attacks aimed at Bug Arceus and in return, Bug Arceus can switch into the Ground attacks directed at Heatran. Wobbufett makes setting up easier and can trap Scarfed Pokemon who attempt to KO Bug Arceus. Dual screens can aid in setting up, allowing Bug Arceus to obtain multiple Swords Dance boosts with more ease. Deoxys-S and Mewtwo are capable of setting up screens quickly with their blistering Speed. Spikes and Stealth Rock can help secure some KOs, so a Spiker is recommended. Forretress and Skarmory do the job well, particularly Forretress, who can use Rapid Spin to remove enemy entry hazards. Be wary though, as both of these Pokemon share a Fire-type weakness with Bug Arceus. For this reason, suicide leads such Deoxys-S and Froslass are suitable alternatives to lay down entry hazards.

[SET]
name: Calm Mind
move 1: Calm Mind
move 2: Judgment
move 3: Ice Beam / Substitute / Earth Power
move 4: Recover
item: Insect Plate
nature: Timid
evs: 100 HP / 100 Def / 100 SpA / 100 SpD / 100 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Like all Arceus types, Bug Arceus can run a very threatening Calm Mind set. Bug Arceus easily differentiates itself from its other formes due to its defensive typing and STAB Bug-type Judgement. It is also one of the few Calm Mind Arceus types capable of beating Latias in a Calm Mind war, thanks to its super effective Judgment.

Judgment is obviously the primary move due to Bug Arceus receiving a STAB boost on it. Calm Mind is the crux of the set and allows Bug Arceus to boost its Special Attack and Special Defense. Thanks to its respectable defense typing and Recover, Bug Arceus can easily obtain multiple Calm Minds to boost its power. Bug Arceus has a large variety of options for the last spot, such as Ice Beam, which can hit most Flying- and Dragon-type Pokemon for super effective damage, with Ho-Oh being the exception. Substitute can be used in the same spot to provide Bug Arceus a way to block status, and Substitute also lets it beat Blissey. Earth Power can be used to net a surprise OHKO on Heatran, and it hits other grounded Steel-types super effectively, while Iron Defense enables Bug Arceus to have even more defensive staying power, Fire Blast can be used to hit Steel-type Pokemon for super effective damage. However, the biggest reason to use Fire Blast is to beat Skarmory and Forretress, who will otherwise wall this set. Roar can allow Bug Arceus to be an efficient phazer and can quickly wear down its counters with entry hazard support.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Ho-Oh counters this set with ease, taking minimal damage from a +1 Ice Beam or Judgment. A Choice Scarf Kyogre's Water Spout can hit Bug Arceus for heavy damage. Bug Arceus can use Thunder to hit Kyogre and Ho-Oh for good damage but it has little use other than that. Latios and Latias make excellent counters to Kyogre with their ability to take Water-type attacks with ease; they can also absorb Ho-Oh's Fire-type attacks directed at Bug Arceus. Wobbufett makes for a good partner with its ability to trap counters to Bug Arceus. Skarmory is troublesome because it can set up entry hazards with ease while phazing Bug Arceus away or attacking with Brave Bird. Dialga has little trouble taking Bug Arceus's attacks and can threaten with a Fire-type attack. Heatran and Dialga make excellent teammates for Bug Arceus. Bug Arceus resists their Fighting and Ground weaknesses, while Dialga can take Rock-type attacks and Heatran can take Fire-type attacks. Blissey can also counter this set should Bug Arceus not use Substitute. Spikes and Stealth Rock are required to obtain certain KOs, so a Spiker is recommended. Forretress and Skarmory do the task set at hand, but Forretress gets the nudge over its competition because it can use Rapid Spin to remove the enemies' entry hazards. Be wary though, as both of these Pokemon share a Fire-type weakness with Bug Arceus. For this reason, suicide leads such Deoxys-S and Froslass can also effectively provide Bug Arceus the entry hazards it needs.

[Other Options]

Refresh allows Bug Arceus to rid itself of status, particularly poison and paralysis, that could hinder a sweep. Bug Arceus can also spread poison around with Toxic. Reflect and Light Screen are available to support teammates, but there are better dual screen users, and it wastes a precious moveslot. Bug Arceus can also use Perish Song to put a timer on opposing Calm Minders that think they can set up on Bug Arceus, as well as to force switches. Bug Arceus can also be a viable attacking lead. Its combination of STAB X-Scissor and ExtremeSpeed allow Deoxys leads to set up only one layer of hazards. In addition, Bug Arceus has access to the move Mirror Coat, which can put opposing Darkrai leads to sleep when they attempt to do the same to you.

[Checks and Counters]

Bug Arceus has quite a few counters. Garchomp outpaces Bug Arceus and can hit it with a super effective Stone Edge. Choice Scarf Kyogre can switch in and use Water Spout or Surf. Dialga is able to switch in with ease and Fire Blast to KO. Giratina can safely switch in and burn Bug Arceus with Will-O-Wisp. Skarmory can take a +2 Stone Edge and phaze Bug Arceus away with Whirlwind or hit it with a STAB Brave Bird, or even set up entry hazards against it. While Forretress can't do much to Bug Arceus directly, it can set up hazards. Blissey becomes a counter to Calm Mind variants of Bug Arceus that do not employ Substitute. Ho-Oh can take all of Bug Arceus's attacks, bar Stone Edge, and OHKO it with a Sacred Fire or Brave Bird; it can also set up a Substitute on it with ease.

On the SD set you said that extremespeed is still a good option but it wasn't mentioned/slashed on the moveset. Is this just a typo or is that something you are going to work into an other options section? I also think that overheat deserves a mention as you are still walled by bronzong and skarm (Sort of). Also, a rapid spin user should definitely be mentioned because of the SR weakness.

Also being walled by tina-o as you mentioned is not ideal, so maybe dragon claw should replace stone edge on the main set with a fire move in the last slot to grant coverage on everything bar heatran. Even with dragon claw, I dont think giratina-a is OHKO'd OHKO'd at +6 so something to weaken it or take it out would be necessary (Maybe a heatran of your own??) though he is rare, so it probably wouldn't be too much of a problem.

oh, when making the bug analysis i c/pd info from rock, Espeed isnt supposed to be there. Fixed and thanks. and ill add a spinner to teammates thanks for that as well.

as for dclaw > edge, ill probably have to test to see which is better i suppose, or a QC can weigh in.

thanks for the nitpicks

What advantages does Bug have over Ghost as a Swords Dancer? It has nasty weaknesses to Fire and especially Rock, and Bug STAB is a mixed blessing - it hits Psychic-types for SE but gets horrible overall coverage and bad two-move coverage (unlike Ghost).

Well, beyond Psychics, it can hit Celebi, Darkrai, Tyranitar, Dark Arceus, Weavile, etc. for Super Effective damage. Also the Fire weakness can be negated with Kyogre on the team, which isn't so bad since Fire Blast is the final option as the 2nd attack on the first set...

Ice-eyes

Simper Fi
Ghost hits those, except the Dark-types, which are all slaughtered by +2 Brick Break. Ghost can do other stuff, like block Spin, and doesn't have nasty weaknesses and 4MSS to contend with.

What does Bug SD actually do better than Ghost SD? A similar comparison can be made for Calm Mind.

Honestly I am not sure if there is anything the bug one can do *better*, but I still think it is viable; not even arceus can outclass arceus. Just like every other set thus far, it is going to need a lot of testing to determine which sets are outclassed by other types because there may be things like a ground type resistance that for some reason might come into play that we are overlooking. Just a thought.

what giggity said is true, im pretty sure everyone can agree that ghost arceus is "better" than bug but it doesnt outclass due to completely different typing. not only that bug actually does have some stuff over ghost including lack of weakness to dark and ghost. dark is a major one because ghost types can always get trapped by pursuiters.

Advantages of Bug over Ghost:

-Not Pursuit weak.

-Not weak to Ghost/Dark.

-Covers Psychic AND Dark-types in one move.

-Not totally owned by Darkrai and handles TTar and Dark Arceus a bit more easily.

-Matchups vs other Ghost Arceus aren't decided on Speed ties.

-No immunities to its STAB.

-Ground resistance.

Advantages of Bug over Dark:

-Ground/Fighting resistances.

-Covers both Psychic and Dark-types with STAB.

-Actually has good physical STAB for an SD set. (Punishment is too weak.)

Although some may view Bug Arceus as inferior, it has clear advantages over the Ghost/Dark sets. (Also rain removes the Fire weak and Rock/Flying attacks aren't that common just saying.) It really depends on what type fits your team best.

Can qc look at this set and see if its ready for approval or if something needs to be done for approval. i tested Bugceus lead, results werent favorable

k only one more approval needed, im also going to mention skarmory as a check in the sd set seeing as it can take a +2 edge and phaze it away

I think Substitute needs to be slashed in on the Calm Mind set, not just mentioned. In my experience, while it sucks to be owed by Ho-Oh more than usual, Mono Bug is notable for being one of the few mono CM Arceus sets to be able to defeat both Latias and Tyranitar at the same time. As for the Swords Dance set, you might want to mention Cosmic Power. Again, losing to Ho-Oh sucks, but from my testing, the whole SD Cosmic Power thing is pretty viable on Bug Arceus.

Aside from these nitpicks, I aprove.

Hail the most lethal Bug type in the game, the Queen Bee of Pokemon! The God of Pokemon takes the form of a bug punishing any opposing Pokemon without a moment’s hesitation. While Bug typing has plenty of Flaws in the Ubers Environment, such as its Stealth rock weakness or its lack of offensive coverage, this bug easily holds its ground.
(No offense, but I think this needs a better overview ;) )

It is important that should you use be running Roar, entry hazards be used in conjunction with it.are a necessity.

[Additional Comments]

Every counter previously listed for the Swords Dance set,to the SD Set bar Giratina, is still a threat to this set((you should list them still, as well as incorporating teammates)). In addition, to those counters, Blissey can also counter this set should Bug Arceus not use Substitute. becomes a counter to Bug Arceus’s that do not employ Substitute. Ho-Oh can take all of Arceus's attacks and as well and OHKO it with a Sacred Fire and /Brave Bird, or choose to set up a Subtitute and proceed to demolish Arceus from there. while also being able to set up a substitute on it with ease. As for teammates, they are the same as the Swords Dancing bug Arceus’s((you should definitely put them up near the counters)).

[Team Options]

Bug Arceus greatly appreciates support from entry hazards to a great extent. Groudon, Skarmory, Mew, Deoxys, Dialga, Froslass, Heatran, and Forretress are good examples of Pokemon that can set up Stealth Rock or Spikes. Forretress is particularly helpful thanks to Rapid Spin, especially since both Bug Arceus set’s are is greatly hindered by Toxic Spikes, Stealth Rocks and spikes as well but to a lesser extent. The Bug Arceus sets also appreciates Dual Screens and paralysis support to aid it in its setup sweeping. Lugia, Kyogre, Groudon, Dialga, and Jirachi (Body slam gets an important note due to being able to paralyze Garchomp, one of its biggest counters as well as Groudon). are great paralysis users of Thunder Wave, while Jirachi can also use Body Slam to spread paralysis.spreaders, while Mewtwo, Uxie, Bronzong, and Latios are great users of Dual Screens.

Wobbuffet makes setting up easier as well as being able to trap Scarfed Pokemon who attempt to revenge KO Bug Arceus. Dual Screens can aid in setting up, allowing Bug Arceus to obtain multiple boosts with more ease. Spikes and Stealth Rock can help secure some KOs, so a spiker is recommended. Fortress and Skarmory do the job efficiently- particularly Fortress who spins away opposing hazards (particularly toxic spikes). (you just mentioned all of this in the previous paragraph...) Heatran also deserves special mention is given a nod as it can switch into Fire- and Flying-type attacks aimed at Arceus, and in turn Bug Arceus can switch into the Ground-type attacks directed Heatran at it.

Sorry I couldn't get to the rest, but I have some school work I want to finish tonight.

alright thanks firecape, and i agree with the overview, ill work on getting an adequate replacement for it. if anyone has anything feel free to post it here. ill add the rest of your edits into the OP. thanks. and oops i guess i made a mistake on the team options part.

"While some may think the insectoid appearance of Arceus is inferior to its evil or spectral forms, don't be fooled; the Alpha Pokémon has great reason to assume what may be seen as an undesirable typing. Bug Arceus differentiates itself from its Dark and Ghost brethren by sporting a resistance to the ever-popular Earthquake as well as the capability of striking the weaknesses of many Uber Pokémon with only a single attack. Dare not underestimate this guise of the omnipotent Arceus, for even the most unassuming of its manifestation is deadly."

I took my stab at an overview for it. What do you all think?

EDIT: Thanks, Aeron Ee1 for catching some mistakes I made.

Bug doesn't resist Dark, just that every popular Bug type seems too because of their secondary type... and you use the word form too much.. I also think Smogon likes to go with the in-game spelling: "Forme". Without those problems though (easily fixed), its a pretty good Overview.

Bug is one of those types that I don't exactly remember all the matchups. But Arceus doesn't technically have 'Formes'; that's just Shaymin and Deoxys. I just didn't want to use 'guise' all over the place. I guess it's thesaurus time.

[Set Comments]

Like all Arceus types, Bug Arceus can run a very threatening Calm Mind set. Bug Arceus easily differentiates itself from its peers due to its defensive typing and STAB Bug-type Judgement. It is also one of the few Calm Mind Arceus types capable of beating Latias in a Calm Mind war, thanks to its super effective Bug-type Judgment.

Judgment is obviously the primary move due to Arceus receiving a STAB boost on it. Calm Mind is the crux of the set, allowing and allows Arceus to boost its Special Attack and Special Defense. Judgment's damage output may seem weak at first, but when used in tandem with its bulk, respectable defense typing, (space) and Recover, Arceus can easily obtain multiple Calm Minds to boost its power. Bug Arceus has a large variety of options for the last spot, such as Ice Beam, (comma) which can hit all Flying- and Dragon-type Pokemon for super effective damage (Ho-Oh is a Flying-type that isn't hit super effectively by Ice Beam, so this may need rewording to, "most" Flying- and Dragon-type Pokemon. Unless you meant all Dragon/Flying Pokemon.). Substitute can be used in the same spot to provide Arceus a way to block status as well as a way to beat Blissy. Earth Power can be used to obtain a surprise OHKO on Heatran, as well as to hit other grounded Steel-types. Iron Defense enables Arceus to have even more defensive staying power, but Bug Arceus really wants another coverage move. Fire Blast can be used to hit Steel-type Pokemon for super effective damage. The biggest reason to use Fire Blast, however, is to hit Skarmory and Forretress, who otherwise can easily wall this set. Roar can allow Arceus to be an efficient phazer while wearing and can quickly wear down its counters with entry hazard support. It is important that should you use Roar, entry hazards be used in conjunction with it.

[Additional Comments]

Every counter previously listed for the Swords Dance set, bar Giratina, is still a threat to this set. (We've been refraining from mentioning other sets in other sets' comments) Garchomp outspeeds Arceus and can hit it with a super effective Stone Edge. Groudon can be an efficient partner in order to take Rock type attacks as well but its sunlight makes Opposing fire attacks stronger. Choice Scarf Kyogre can switch in and use Water Spout or Surf for devastating effects. Latios and Latias are able to take Water attacks from Kyogre aimed at Arceus as well as the fire moves. Dialga is able to switch in with ease and use Fire Blast to KO Arceus. Skarmory can phaze Arceus or set up entry hazards against it. While Forretress can’t do much in return bar explosion, it can also setup entry hazards. Heatran is given a nod as it can switch into Fire and Flying attacks aimed at Arceus and Bug Arceus can switch into the Ground Attacks directed at it. Wobbufett makes setting up easier as well as trapping Scarfed Pokemon who attempt to KO Bug Arceus. Dual Screens can aid in setting up, allowing Bug Arceus to obtain multiple Swords Dance boosts with more ease. Spikes and Stealth Rock can help secure some KOs, so a Spiker is recommended. Forretress and Skarmory do the job, particularly Forretress, who can use Rapid Spin to remove the enemies entry hazards. Be wary though, as both of these Pokemon share a Fire-type weakness with Bug Arceus. For this reason, suicide leads such Deoxys-S and Froslass can also help lay down entry hazards In addition, Blissey can also counter this set should Bug Arceus not use Substitute. Ho-Oh can take all of Arceus's attacks and OHKO it with Sacred Fire and /Brave Bird, or choose to set up a Subtitute and proceed to demolish Arceus from there.

(I know all of the counters are the same, but can't you find another way to word this instead of directly c/p'ing from the set above? I mean, maybe mention Bulk Up Dialga as an excellent partner, stress Ho-Oh as a hard counter, don't mention Kyogre because it's now a little lesser of a threat thanks to Calm Mind, maybe mention other Arceus types that could be a threat, etc.)

[Team Options]

Bug Arceus greatly appreciates support from entry hazards. Groudon, Skarmory, Mew, Deoxys, Dialga, Froslass, Heatran, and Forretress are all examples of Pokemon that can set up Stealth Rock or Spikes. Forretress is particularly helpful thanks to Rapid Spin, since Bug Arceus is greatly hindered by Toxic Spikes and Stealth Rock. Bug Arceus also appreciates Ddual Sscreens and paralysis support to aid it in its setup. Lugia, Kyogre, Groudon, Dialga, and Jirachi are great paralysis users of Thunder Wave, while Jirachi can also use Body Slam to spread paralysis. Mewtwo, Uxie, Bronzong, and Latios are great users of Ddual Sscreens.

Wobbuffet makes setting up easier as well as being able to trap Scarfed Pokemon who attempt to revenge kill Bug Arceus. (period) Latios and Latias are able to take Water- and Fire-type attacks aimed at Arceus with ease, so they can make good fantastic teammates. Groudon can be a decent partner to take Rock-type attacks, but its ability, Drought, makes Fire-type attacks stronger. Heatran also deserves a special mention as it can swith into Fire- and Flying-type attacks aimed at Arceus, and in turn Arceus can switch into the Ground- and Fighting-type attacks (space) directed at Heatran.

[Optional Changes]

Refresh allows Arceus to rid itself of status, particularly such as poison and paralysis, (comma) that could hinder a sweep. Thunder also has some use on the Calm Mind set to hit Kyogre and Ho-Oh for good damage but does little for Arceus other than that. (This should have been mentioned in AC of the Calm Mind set then.) Arceus can also spread Ppoison around with Toxic. Roar can be used to phaze opponents away. (This was mentioned in the Calm Mind set.) Reflect and Light Screen are available to support teammates, but there are better Ddual Screeners screen users, and it wastes a precious moveslot. Arceus can also use Perish Song to put a timer on opposing Calm Minders that think they can set up on Bug Arceus, as well as to force switches. Bug Arceus can also be a viable attacking lead. Its combination of STAB X-sScissor and ExtremesSpeed allow Deoxys leads to only set set up only one layer of hazards. In addition, it Bug Arceus also has access to the move mMirror cCoat, which can put opposing Darkrai leads to sleep when they attempt to due do the same to you.

[Counters]

Bug Arceus has quite a few counters. Garchomp Ooutspeeds Arceus and can hit it with a super effective Stone Edge. Choice Scarf Kyogre can switch in and Water sSpout or sSurf. Dialga is able to switch in with ease and Fire Blast to KO. Giratina can safely switch in and burn Arceus with Will-O-Wisp Arceus. Skarmory can take a +2 Stone Edge and phaze it Bug Arceus away with Whirlwind away or hit it with a STAB Brave Bird, (comma) or even set up entry hazards Hazards against it. While Fortress can’t't do much in return to Bug Arceus directly, it can set (space) up hazards. Blissy becomes a counter to Calm Mind variants of Bug Arceus’s that do not employ Substitute. Ho-Oh can take all of Arceus's attacks, bar Stone Edge, as well and OHKO it with a Sacred Fire/ or Brave Bird; while also being able to it can also set up a sSubstitute on it with ease.

Lots of random capitalization errors, but outside of that, it was a good write-up.
