CAP 13 CAP 2 - Part 2 - Typing Discussion

+1 Electric/Poison

Since this is a sketchmon, it should not have super powerful STAB (i.e. dragon), but rather, focus on its unlimited movepool and unlimited coverage. Electric STAB isnt to shabby, and the fact that it gets Bolt Strike is awesome. Poison STAB is bad, but usable, and have powerful options, too. You know what? i just came up with a not too bad moveset:

CAPMON
careful/levitate
252hp 252 sp.def 4atk
-coil
-bolt strike
-gunk shot
-ice shard/icicle crash

Not bad, eh?

For what it's worth, here's a quick run-down of past some CAP typing numbers:

Fighting has been used for 4 of the 12 CAPs. That's a full 1/3.
Dark, Electric, Ghost, Ground, and Water have been used for 2 CAPs each.
Bug, Dragon, Fire, Flying, Grass, Ice, Poison, Rock, and Steel have been used for 1 CAP each.
Normal and Psychic have never been used for any CAP.

Only 1 of the 12 CAPs has been mono-typed.

8 of the 12 CAPs (2/3) had unique typing at the time of their creation. 5 continue to have unique typing.

So what am I trying to get at by bringing this up? Well, this might sound stupid, but it seems that, for CAP, typing tends to be rather odd more often than it should be. Yes, it's true that many of the most competitively viable Pokemon are competitively viable because of their unique typing, but... I just feel like CAP has had a strong bias towards wanting to create Pokemon with unique typing when there seems to be no good reason to go out of the way to do that. Remember that out of the 153 possible type combinations, only 45* or so, less than a third, haven't been done. It just seems like more than coincidence that CAP over-represents unused type combinations. The project shouldn't be more likely to consider unique typing just because it is unique if that's not the point of the specific CAP.

(* This number is from memory, so I'm not sure if it's totally accurate. It also includes 12 Normal-types, and I know people have different opinions about whether or not those "count".)

Also, there are very few mono-type suggestions here, which I suppose is fair when considering that mono-type Pokemon only comprise 1/9 of all possible typing combinations. However, if I'm understanding correctly, we are wanting for this Pokemon's typing to be not quite so perfect exactly to start compensating for Sketch. I think that some of the mono-type suggestions should be given further consideration, as they provide important limiting factors like only having STAB with a single type.

Finally, because of the overwhelming number of Fighting types already produced by CAP, I think that we should definitely move away from that type. It's been used at least twice as often as any other type for CAP, and CAP should be wanting to try to do new things. Especially with existing Fighting types already being so dominant in the meta-game this generation, I couldn't support yet another one. Any other type is probably still fine, though I must admit that I'm still partial to the idea of a Normal-type.

You can claim we could just not give the Dragon CAP Outrage, but it just doesn't sit right. Movepools for every CAP have been guided by Type-Move requirements.
Given that Game Freak themselves have broken Type-Move requirements (Keldeo) they are no longer relevant.

Pokémon has to be able to surprise many different opponent I'dd go for a typing with few weaknesses and, because it should not have a clear specialisation, preferably if shouldn't have to many strengths either. The types that have only one weakness are:
Normal
Normal/Ghost
Water/Ground
Water/Dragon
Electric
Poison/Dark
Psychic/Dark
Bug/Steel

Of these, only Psychic/Dark and Normal/Ghost have not been used in a pokémon yet (as far as I'm aware at this point).

Normal/Ghost would have 3 complete immunities, but also a lot of types that normally effect it, so that could be an option.

Psychic/Dark sounds like a bit of a popular choice overload. What I do like is its 4x weakness to bugs, since bugs can use pokémon with this weakness to strengthen their position. On the other hand it would probably just encourage more megahorning, and megahorn is already usefull enough.

I personally like the water/ground typing, but that would almost certainly give acces to a STAB earthquake, while the purpose of the pokémon is to not have a predictable stongest attack.

Just normal is also a good option, although a bit dull perhaps.

Added all up, I'd prefer one of these options:
Normal
Normal/Ghost
Ground/Water (but give some good thought to not giving it earthquake)

It seems that, reading this thread, I had misjudged what we apparently wanted Sketchy to turn out to be. Based on the typings and arguments presented, we appear to be wanting to go for a generic bulky attacker typing, rather than something that forces us to make use of Sketch to be effective in OU. Now, there's nothing wrong with that, of course... just different to what I had expected we wanted. So, let's roll with this. We want something that gives us good offensive and defensive presence. Given that we are allowed to suggest any typing that we want in this thread, that makes for a hell of a lot of options, and I'm finding it increasingly more difficult to work out exactly what people are putting forward for their options.

Here's what I would like to see, from an offensive standpoint, such that we are making the most use out of Sketch that we can:
  • More than one viable option for Sketch to be a coverage move. This is absolutely crucial, in my opinion. Some of the typings that have been suggested may well give us very nice two-move coverage but if we are always using Sacred Fire as our coverage move, we have a problem. For example, for a Bug-type (example), we may want a Ground-type move, or a Psychic-type move, or an Electric-type move, or a Dark-type move, or indeed any number of nice combinations we might have.
  • A clear choice to be made between set-up moves and coverage attacks. This should be fairly obvious, though minor. If Sketch is required for coverage, then all sets will likely be 4 attacks + Leftovers or Life Orb. If it requires Shell Smash or Tail Glow to be effective, then it will use that. There should, therefore, be a clear balance where both are effective, but the setup sweeper loses a significant coverage advantage for the boost, and the non-setup attacker is less effective because of its lower power. If one is simply a better choice than the other, it will be used more. For this reason, I would speak out against any type combination that gave perfect coverage on its own or with any one coverage attack (allowances made for weaker attacking types, of course)
  • Another option for our friendly neighbourhood Sketch Artist is improving its own existing STAB moves. Here, the extra raw power comes in the form of the typing itself. Because of this, I would shy away from types like Dragon, where the strongest moves, such as Draco Meteor and Outrage, are almost mandatory options regardless. A typing like Fire, on the other hand, can reinforce itself with V-create, Blue Flare, Sacred Fire… lots of nice options here.
  • Support moves or defensive moves are a real option. This is a pretty grey area for us really. We all know that offensive moves are almost always going to be the pick of the bunch, but there’s no harm in us choosing a typing that can facilitate somewhat a supporting role, or else moves like Taunt or Recover. Basically what this means is “make it ok defensively”. So as long as this doesn’t mean Ice/Rock… seems ok.
At this point, I’m still vying for Psychic. You really will have to choose between Ghost-type and Fighting-type moves, or maybe even Fire or Ground, to take care of those pesky Steel-types, particularly stuff like Jirachi, Reuniclus, Skarmory, Tyranitar… the list goes on. As for set-up moves, we all know that Psychic isn’t the strongest of STAB moves, so there is a very real need for both coverage and setup. Hence we have on our hands a real thinking game as far as Sketch is played. As previously mentioned, Psystrike and Psycho Boost are really up there as far as new STAB moves are concerned, and yes, we can afford to put on stuff like Recover or Rapid Spin if we want to.

But I will be honest, defensively it may well be lacking. Therefore, a nice secondary typing to reinforce it defensively is ideal, preferably one that resists our core weaknesses of U-turn and Pursuit.

Fighting seems like the obvious one here, as it resists both. But it is a stupidly good typing and we’ve done it so many times before, not to mention that it messes up the crucial balance mentioned above. Also, Pursuit seems a lesser problem if our Pokemon is bulky – it essentially becomes a base 80 nonSTAB attack for stuff like Scizor, and ideally we will have coverage or set-up power sufficient to overpower such foes. So what else resists Bug? We have Fire, Poison, Flying, Ghost, and Steel. Fire has already been ruled out for sun and strong move abuse, Flying gives us a Stealth Rock weakness, Ghost exacerbates the Pursuit problem and Steel is too easy as a way out. Thus, Psychic/Poison seems to be our best choice here. True, it gives us a Pursuit and an Earthquake weakness, but it also gives us a 4x Fighting-type resistance and a resistance to Grass. Good egg, not too shabby. Doesn’t give us many set-up opportunities, but who cares? This is about Sketch, not a random bulky attacker. I really like the idea of this typing.

Then again, perhaps this is too little, too late. Take with a pinch of salt. Hopefully, once we have a typing, Sketchmon will be a bit more focused and we can get down to the bigger details. I live in hope.

Backing Poison as a primary typing, as it gives good defensive presence in a metagame dominated by fighting types and allows for a nice pool of support moves and possibly some offensive movepool versatility (see: Weezing's coverage).
Torn between Psychic and Electric as secondary typings, though. Each of them have solid merits and noticable drawbacks, but leaning on the Poison/Electric combo, as despite the 4x Earthquake weakness, it gives CAP2 a greater offensive presence over Psychic. Being part Electric also gives it Status options such as Thunder Wave. Because of Sketch/Balloon, CAP2 is able to overcome its weaknesses in terms of Poison/Electric, as it can run a Dark or Bug type move in order to take on its Psychic counters, and use Magnet Rise or Balloon in order to escape the threat of Earthquake. With Poison/Psychic, it has no way of doing this, apart from the aforementioned ways to avoid Earthquake; who WOULDN'T run Pursuit?

Sack it, backing Poison/Electric. Gives CAP2 a chance of a versatile movepool and solid offensive options with no pursuit weakness.

Tough discussion this.

For me personally, I'd like to see a typing that:
a) Has a useful STAB, so that a boosting move can be chosen, and perhaps even a mono-attacking set can be used
b) A typing combo that, with the use of Sketch, has quite some coverage altogether to make an LO/Choice attacking set.
c) Has a STAB that does not scream for the use of a particular type move when Sketch is used for a coverage move. For example, Fire moves are likely chosen when you want to complement your Grass STAB, Fighting is likely chosen to complement your Ghost STAB, Fire/Ground is chosen to complement your Dragon-type. (basically, getting (almost) perfect neutral coverage with just two moves). This means that if we pick any of these types, for example grass, then it's bloody likely that Sketch will almost always be used for Sacred Fire/V-Create, as with just Grass/Fire, you can get great coverage in just two moves.

I'm not a big fan of anything Ghost, tbh, as it can use Hidden Power [Fighting] if it has a decent Sp.A stat and then use Sketch for Tailglow/Shell Smash/etc. In just two moves, it can get great coverage. And even though HP has only 70 BP, getting to +2 Sp.A and Spe in one turn gives plenty of sweeping oppertunity.
There are many other typings I don't like for the same reason. Throw in HP and Shell Smash and you have you're basic set, right there, with perfect coverage.

I'm loving Poison/Normal/Flying and Bug as typings and Steel somewhat.
If Sketchy is any two of these typings, it's STABs alone are not enough to sweep, even it's STABS + a HP don't give perfect coverage. (I can't think of a combo where any these above types + HP gives perfect coverage) This means that you'll need to decide whether you miss out on some coverage and use Sketch for a boosting move regardless, or you'll get a 4th coverage move through means of Sketch and forego the possibility of boosting.

Of course, it could be that Sketchy is getting a Sp.A stat of 40, making HP completely useless, but since I can't assume anything at all yet about stats, I'd like to keep in mind that when choosing for a typing, I'd prefer typings that don't allow very simple sets of STAB + HP (Where the two of them is instant great to near-perfect coverage) + Shell Smash (Sketch) + filler.

I can't say yet which type combo's I would like to see, but I think that the typing should be such, that when team-building, you'll have to specifically decide (if you're making an attacking set) whether to use Sketch for a boosting move or a coverage move, with either case having a clear drawback.

I have to work today, so I won't be able to address this for like 8 hours. Even when I get home, I might not be able to make up my mind on a few typings by the time I get home! This might have to be open for an extra day to compensate for that we are discussing both types at once.

If you are going to leave this open for an extra day, it might be worth posting a new discussion thread, with a selection of the most perceptive quotes at the top, and your current plans for the slate.

I've always found it a bit unnatural that there'd be no discussion between the announcement of the slate, and the start of the voting. This would be a way to get around that; and to give us some feedback on where you see the discussion; and to provide a sharper focus for the final hours of the debate.

Or you could ignore all that. It's still great that you're posting your thoughts mid-thread. I just think starting a new one might have more impact - and be especially useful for typing, which has traditionally had two discussions and up to six polls dedicated to it.

I'm not sure if you've been following the better posts or IRC lately, but some of us have taken "Sketch management" very seriously, and Poison/Dragon and Ghost/Grass are direct results of that (Electric/Poison, too, to an extent). There are many different three-move and two-move combos, but Fire just happens to be one of the most interesting coverage types to pair with an offensive STAB type. This is important so that people don't decide that powerful setup moves are superior to certain coverage moves almost every time. I'm just kind of tired of seeing these claims that no one is taking the typing seriously, when I think we've taken it more seriously than I personally thought possible.

Where did I say you weren't taking it seriously? I merely stated that you were going for a classic build rather than what I had expected, which was a typing that directly hindered the CAP in some way. Grass/Ghost and Poison/Dragon are very good typings in their own right, which to an extent undercuts what I had assumed we were attempting to learn ("In what ways does this Sketch factor influence hitherto rather bland and uninteresting Pokemon and the metagame it resides in?" sort of thing).

Nearly everything I have seen is a perfectly legitimate approach to this concept, but there are so many of them even now that it has been narrowed to "bulky offence" that even something so simple as typing is a difficult thing to argue over, when a lot of people are considering entirely different approaches. Kindly don't call me out over this, I have no wish to start a argument, and don't assume that I am being confrontational out of malign intent. I wouldn't want that.

Looking back at the last page, I wan to address people's concerns with Dragon typing.

First of all, while it is something I myself have been guilty of in the past, saying that if it is Dragon then it must have Outrage is not a valid argument at all. If we don't want to give it outrage, it doesn't need to have it. Besides, not all dragons get Outrage naturally in 5th gen (Altaria and Flygon), and there is no tutor for it.

That being said, all the Shell Smash calcs really do nothing for me. Sure, it 2HKOs everyone at +2. But that is only with Life Orb, which combined with Shell Smash and a Def/SpD lowering nature means you are easy priority bait. Additionally, while attack stats are important, so is speed. You can have the power to KO all you want, but if you get outsped and KOd, then no one cares. Lowering speed can do just as much to neuter it as lowering its attack.

And thirdly, in addition to Outrage, who says we need to give it Hidden Power. If having a way to get past Steels is something we don't want it to do without using Sketch for it, then we can do that. Hidden Power is in no way a required move.

So, to summarize, while those calcs my look frightening, they are based on many assumptions that are just not necessarily anything we have to implement, and can be easily fixed.

This is something that perhaps requires a different thread, a policy review thread perhaps, but this is a reply to Jas regardless.

Quite a while ago, to streamline the move process, a huge list of moves was worked out of type-move requirements, move-move requirements and moves that every single pokemon has, with only very few exceptions.
These lists were compiled from going through all movepools in the game of all pokemon.

It's up to the discretion of R_D to say that we may or may not to disregard this, but these type-move lists, that surely apply in this stage as well, should not be disregarded that easily..

"Yeah, let's choose water, but we can't give it Surf". If we toss out the type-move requirements that easy, then I see no sense in having them anymore at all in the first place.

O, and my reason saying this, is because Outrage is a Type_move requirement for the Dragon type.

I'm a bit distressed by the outpouring of love for Ghost/Normal. I find Ghost/Normal to be highly problematic from a defensive standpoint--it lacks good resistances it needs to be really effective. Yes, I realize that it is immune to Fighting and Ghost, and resistant to Bug and Poison. However, let's look at the October usage stats for a moment to see how these resistances play out in practice.

I will readily admit that Normal/Ghost is strictly superior to pure Ghost. That being said, there are good reasons why there are currently no pure Ghosts in OU. Looking at the top 25 OU Pokemon, the Pokemon that will commonly use the types that Normal/Ghost resists or is immune to are Scizor (U-turn, Bug Bite, Superpower), Terrakion (Close Combat), Gengar (Shadow Ball, Focus Blast), Reuniclus (Focus Blast) and Conkeldurr (Drain Punch, Mach Punch). Of these, only Gengar and Conkeldurr lack a potent STAB to hit a Normal/Ghost with, and Conkeldurr nearly always carries Payback. Making matters worse, when Scizor DOES use a Bug move, it is very frequently U-turn, and switching into a U-turn nearly always leads to an unfavorable position. For me, the coup de grace is the fact that in the 1337 stats, the stats that reflect the Pokemon that the really good players used, Gengar and Conkeldurr do not appear in the top 25, although Lucario and Infernape do. Lucario is probably the best switch a Normal/Ghost has available at the highest level of play, and even then Lucario is only #20.

I agree that Ghost is a good type for this CAP, especially from an offensive standpoint, but the secondary typing MUST add better resistances for a Ghost type to be viable in today's OU. Normal/Ghost simply will not have enough opportunities to switch in, especially when compared to the Water/Grass/Electric resistances that Grass/Ghost has to offer. If the appeal of Normal/Ghost is the lack of resistances, that is, that it makes it much more reliant on the tankiness of its stats to gain switch-ins on neutral attacks, okay. But I have not heard anyone make that argument so far, and I don't like for our stats to pigeonhole us into a particular stat spread to that extent.

Edit: To those worried about type-move guidelines, keep in mind that Wobbuffet has always ignored those guidelines, and Sketch makes this much more of a unique Pokemon like Wobbuffet than it is a conventional one like, say, Cresselia.

In response to Yllnath, Magikarp doesn't get Surf! Ok that's irrelevant, but on the topic of type-move necessities I would like to note that while such restrictions are a benchmark there isn't really any need to follow them, even if Gamefreak does. If it damages the CAP then why would be include it, even if it's typing logically says it should have a move? It seems to be flavor more then common sense that is dictating arguments on this topic to me.

Yllnath, I assume you mean these lists.

As it says on the webpage, these are just trends. They apply to the vast majority of pokemon, but not all of them. And ultimately, we are 'advised' to 'make the most' of flavour, and the lists are described as 'guidelines.'

I would treat Type-Move and Move-Move requirements as rebuttable presumptions. That is, a Dragon should 'by default' know Outrage. But if a movepool designer wants to omit it and puts forward a sensible argument defending their decision - well, I'm sure the TL and the voters would take that into consideration.

Precisely, those lists. And those we're drafted, as guidelines to help steer the movepool building. However, I feel they just as much apply to the typing discussion. And, personally, I always dislike to read "I like option A in this stage, however, then we'll need to do disallow Option B in that stage".
I know we don't have to follow the type-move requirements, that there's plenty of leeway not to have a move in the actual movepool, however, if you're argument for (in this case) Dragon typing (in this case), is that we can just omit Outrage, it's basically poll-jumping and limiting the movepool creators possibilities.

There's been clear calcs on how scary STAB Outrage + Shell Smash is, and therefor I'd rather look at other typings first, instead of immediately suggesting to drop Outrage. I think I didn't make that point properly in my last post, so here it is anyway. :)

I'm going to defend Water, honestly for proably the last time but I feel like it should be a plausible typing; to the point of which the most annoying problem it gets would have to be 'Toed, with which it not necessarily wants to partner with.

Water is basically the best type in Pokemon: Great defensively, great offensively, good when paired with anything, really. The only reason we don't want to include this typing is because of Politoed, a true OU-Mon, and it will be something not necessarily workable into a destructive force if done as I'm saying: What I'm saying, of course, is that with our predefined stat rough is Bulky Offensive, who's to say we can't choose how it would work? Listen: If we make it specially inclined, people might use Water Spout. Of course, it would likely have to sketch it, thus it's speed would render this unsatisfactory. Physical? No problem here. Honestly, the only thing that could be bad is that Rain causes Double STAB and it limits Fire use... But o'course, V-Create in the rain would still waste Ferrothorn - who would deny? in this case, all secnarios I deem it fit for Water, and I'm shocked as to why few are coming to the same conclusion. With Water as it's type, it would seriously be a major boon, and not a degradation towards such.

I'm just trying to convince you here that water will not make Sketchy a worse CAP, but if done as we've already decided, (Bulky offence, implying Shell Smash/Quiver Dance/Speed Booster Move needed for speed) I feel like this would be a great addition and simply make it, IMHO, better.

It can also be called the Water Color Pokemon ^-^

My vote is for Poison/Electric because Electric is good offensively as well as a pretty good defensive typing and poison has good resistances and because I remember a smogon article about how Weezing would be a better pokemon if it was Poison/Electric. We're opposed to making it water because of Politoed, and I hate rain so why not make it electric and give it stab against rain? Poison also has the benefit to being neutral on most of everything except rock, ground, steel, poison and ghost. And poison beats a slew of sun abusers too, and for that matter Abomasnow. I feel that Electric Poison is seems to have the added benefit of being anti-weather.

I like the idea that sketchmon has to utilize it's sketch spot to achieve perfect coverage, forcing it to choose between coverage and, say, Shell Smash. That way, a Shell Smash sweeper will need some team support before it can wreck everything on the opponent's team, but an all-out attacker can still threaten most switch-ins with the proper move. We definitely want these sort of trade-offs involved to make this pokemon interesting to use.

I also think we need a good defensive typing so support moves can be utilized effectively.

I really like the idea of Poison / Electric, since it targets Ground-types as the big resist rather than Steel-types. There are enough dual-type mons that resist this combo that there will be plenty of coverage move options, and you also won't attain perfect coverage with just Hidden Power.

After reading WeatherEffectRains arguments for Water, I'm actually convinced that Water is a good Type. If we make it more Physical Offensive it would be very interesting ESPECIALLY if we also pair it with at Typing that would be interesting seeing physically based.
Or maybe just Water/Poison? Good neutral coverage, nice resistances and all the stuff that's already been said about Poison plus Water gives a great variety of resistances added.

Really Tyrogue? What exactly did you glean from that post that you didn't already know? WeatherEffectRain's argument (if I'm understanding it right; it was pretty hard to make sense of) is essentially that Water is an extremely good type.

We know that.

We know that all too well.

WeatherEffectRain didn't list a single thing about why it was preferable to any other typing. I don't know why almost all of the rest of the people who've posted in this thread have preferred types other than water. Maybe because we already know a hell of a lot about water types because 1)They're so damn good and 2)Politoed makes them all a hell of a lot better. Maybe because Water would be intrinsically overpowered, or would pigeonhole players into running rain with CaP2, or because Water doesn't best force the sketch slot to define the set, or because Water just doesn't promote variety as much as we want. These are all decent reasons.

Water would probably be a fine type for CaP2. But it would also probably not be the best one, and until you provide an actual argument why a typing of Water would be better than all of our numerous other options, people are probably not going to pay much attention.

Alright, after much deliberation, I have come to the conclusion as to what my slate will be based on the posts in this thread. It took a few more hours than 24, but this thread won't be needed for another day. Expect the first poll of typing shortly, along with my logic for choosing each poll option. Good work on the discussion, guys, you've really changed a lot about my way of thinking and brought a lot of good typings to light!
