Charizard (Analysis) [QC 3/3]

That fire lizard thingy

[OVERVIEW]

From the depths of NU rises a powerful new threat in Charizard. This generation, everyone's favorite fire lizard was given a great new toy to play with, in the for of Solar Power. This ability grants Charizard obscene amounts of power when the sun is shining. Combine this awesome power with Charizard's fantastic STAB's and you have a very scary pokemon. Even though the boons of Solar Power are all very welcome, the loss of 12.5% of Charizard's certainly is not. This HP loss, compounded with a 4x weakness to Stealth Rock, can cause Charizard to die very quickly. Despite that flaw, Charizard is a very major threat in the RU tier and can fit in on any Sunny Day oriented team.

[SET]
name: Choice
move 1: Fire Blast
move 2: Hidden Power Grass / SolarBeam
move 3: Focus Blast
move 4: Air Slash / Overheat
item: Choice Scarf / Choice Specs
ability: Solar Power
nature: Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
 • Insanely Powerful
 • Sun Boosted Solar Power Fire Blast 2HKOs if not OHKOs everything.
 • evs are extremely straight forward.
 • Max Speed and Special Attack just let it destroy stuff.
 • As an example of its power, Fire Blast in sun can OHKO Entei after rocks with a scarf.
 • Hidden Power Grass is preferable over SolarBeam so Charizard has a good move for after the Sun goes away.
 • Focus Blast hits Munchlax
 • Air Slash is for secondary STAB whereas Overheat is for when sun is down and you just need to kill something
 • SPECS IS SUPER POWERFUL
 • HP Rock for Altaria, Mantine, etc.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
 • Flamethrower can be used if you don't like missing but the power drop is kind of huge
 • Needs something to set up sun for it
 • Uxie, Sableye, and Vileplume do well
 • Nothing really walls it so idk what his teammates need to do.
 • I would say prediction is key but, Fire Blast in Sun kills everything.
 • Sawsbuck is a good physical counterpart to Charizard, either is able to clean up after the other
 • RAPID SPIN, Staryu, Wartortle, anything really just get rocks off the field

[SET]
name: Solar Power
move 1: Fire Blast
move 2: Focus Blast
move 3: Hidden Power Grass / SolarBeam
move 4: Air Slash / Sunny Day
item: Leftovers / Heat Rock
ability: Solar Power
nature: Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
 • Functions similar to the last set
 • Leftovers lets it not lose obscene amounts of health
 • Heat Rock can be used with Sunny Day
 • SolarBeam goes with Sunny Day
 • etc. etc.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
 • Flamethrower can once again be used over Fire Blast but power difference
 • Again, Sun Support is great
 • Less dependent on its teammates at the cost of Speed / Power
 • Sableye, Uxie, Vileplume, etc.
 • Sawsbuck, Shiftry, Vileplume, Victreebel
 • RAPID SPIN, Staryu, Wartortle, anything really just get rocks off the field
 • Hidden Power Rock can be used for hitting Altaria, Mantine, etc.

[Other Options]
 • Focus Punch, Rock Slide, Brick Break, Roost, among others which are either gen 4 exclusive (no Solar Power) or just mediocre choices in general
 • Charizard has access to a multitude of boosting moves that it can use
 • BellyZard with Sub, Fire Punch, Thunder Punch, and Belly Drum can demolish teams but it's difficult to set up
 • Also has access to Dragon Dance and Swords Dance although both are inferior to Belly Drum

[Checks and Counters]
 • Nothing really
 • Mantine, Munchlax, and resists can take his hits (just not Fire Blast really)
 • Faster stuff can revenge it
 • STEALTH ROCKS and Solar Power

Just name the first set "Choice".
You should probably give a mention of BellyZard in OO, since it can still work relatively alright... Mention Flamethrower on both sets for people who don't like missing.

I don't think any of the boosting moves deserve their own set. Not even OO material, except the BellyDrum variant.

Looks good otherwise.

HP Rock is probably better than Air Slash on the Sunny Day set to hit Fire Types / Mantine / Altaria.
