Combusken

    [Overview]

Combusken's claim to fame is being one of the only viable Pokemon in NU with access to the coveted Speed Boost ability. The kicking chicken is one of the best offensive Fire-types in the tier, packing a pair of powerful STAB moves that strike fear into the hearts of the opposition. Despite being one of the best offensive Fire-types, Combusken is also the weakest, with mere base 85 Attack and Special Attack stats. It is also very frail and susceptible to common priority attacks such as Samurott's Aqua Jet and Gurdurr's Mach Punch. Its best set is a specially attacking one, as Combusken will struggle to find time to use Swords Dance but doesn't need to take a turn to boost its Special Attack. Because Combusken is not overwhelmingly powerful, its best use is utilizing Speed Boost to clean up weakened teams near the end of a match.

    [SET]
    name: Special Attacker
    move 1: Fire Blast
    move 2: Focus Blast
    move 3: Protect
    move 4: Substitute
    item: Life Orb
    ability: Speed Boost
    nature: Modest
    evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

    [SET COMMENTS]

This is the most effective set Combusken can run, attacking right away to damage the opposition. Fire Blast is the STAB move of choice, hitting many common NU threats, such as Amoonguss, Exeggutor, Cacturne, and Misdreavus, very hard. Focus Blast is a solid secondary STAB that allows Combusken to hit many Pokemon that resist Fire Blast; for example, Miltank, Carracosta, Regirock, and Golem will all fall to a Focus Blast, though its accuracy is less than stellar. Protect is an extremely important move on this set, as it allows Combusken to raise its Speed significantly. After a Protect, it will be able to outrun nearly every common Pokemon in the tier! Substitute is the best option in the fourth moveslot because it allows Combusken to scout potential switch-ins and hit them with the appropriate move, as well as avoid a crippling status condition. It also allows Combusken to scout Sucker Punch, which can deal heavy amounts of damage despite the fiery chicken's Dark-type resistance.

    [ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

As powerful as Combusken's STAB moves are, they are both very unreliable, with accuracies of 85% and 70% respectively. Combusken can use Hidden Power Dark or Hidden Power Ice in the last slot to hit Pokemon that would otherwise counter it. The former hits the Ghost-types, Lampent and Frillish, that would otherwise wall this set to oblivion, while the latter hits the common Altaria, which can otherwise use Combusken as setup fodder. Hidden Power Fighting or Flamethrower are options over their less accurate counterparts, but the drop in power is noticeable and leaves Combusken laughably weak. A Timid nature can be used instead of a Modest one, as it allows Combusken to outspeed a few extra threats such as Choice Scarf Sawk and Choice Scarf Braviary at +2 Speed, but the drop in power is significant and Combusken will fail to KO Pokemon that it should be able to again, such as Rapidash and Simipour.

Amoonguss makes a great partner for Combusken, as it can take Aqua Jets and Mach Punches with ease and Spore a Pokemon that would counter Combusken. Additionally, the bulk Amoonguss provides gives Combusken something to fall back on if you attempt to sweep too early. Absol is another good teammate because it provides an offensive backbone for Combusken, as they work in unison to remove each other's checks. Absol removes Ghost- and Psychic-types that plague this set, while Combusken severely weakens most Fighting-types for Absol. Combusken adores Spikes support, and Cacturne can provide them while also putting offensive pressure on the opponent. Piloswine can provide Stealth Rock for Combusken, while also defeating many of its counters, such as Altaria and Lampent, with ease. Golurk is another solid offensive partner for Combusken, as it easily destroys many of Combusken's counters, such as Grumpig and Muk. One of the best partners for Combusken is Baton Pass Musharna, which is capable of passing Calm Mind boosts and getting Combusken in for free thanks to its abysmal Speed. Combusken can then take advantage of the extra power to muscle through threats that would otherwise defeat it.

    [Other Options]

Combusken is a Pokemon with few other options. It can run a Swords Dance set, but it will struggle to find time to set up and many common Pokemon in the metagame can wall it with ease. The special attacker set is superior because it does not need to set up and can attack right off the bat. Combusken can potentially Baton Pass Swords Dance boosts to its teammates, but Baton Pass is illegal with Speed Boost, so there are many Pokemon that fill such a role better. Combusken can also take advantage of Sunny Day, but other Fire-types such as Charizard and Emboar can do it much better.

    [Checks and Counters]

Lampent and Frillish are hard counters to Combusken, as they fear nothing from any attack it commonly runs and can wear it down with ease. Any bulky Water-type that is not weak to Focus Blast can defeat Combusken with ease; for example, Mantine and specially defensive Ludicolo can switch in with impunity and retaliate with super effective Water-type attacks. Altaria can switch in on any Combusken not running Hidden Power Ice and either set up or attack with ease.

Most Pokemon with a large Special Defense stat can handle Combusken quite well. Muk can switch in and hit Combusken with a powerful Gunk Shot or Poison Jab. Bulky Psychic-types such as Grumpig, Hypno, and Musharna can tank a Fire Blast or two and OHKO Combusken in return with Psychic. Dragonair can set up Dragon Dances if it is running the RestTalk set. Throh is bulky enough to switch in and phaze Combusken with Circle Throw.

Offensive Water-types such as Samurott, Floatzel, and Basculin can all tank a hit and OHKO Combusken in return with a priority Aqua Jet, ignoring any Speed boosts it might have acquired. Even Kangaskhan can check Combusken, as the combination of Fake Out + Sucker Punch can KO it after two rounds of Life Orb recoil, but this method of defeating Combusken should only be used as a last resort.

    i'm still not alive

HP Ice needs an AC mention to have a chance of killing Altaria, though you have to shoot yourself in foot by removing protect or substitute

Mention HP Fight somewhere mainly for the accuracy boost but talk about the MASSIVE drop in power.

And I'm really not a big fan of the SD Set. Its stupidly hard to set up an SD and even then its revenge killed easily and things like Frillish, Musharna, etc can take a hit and kill it back(maybe not in Frillish's case that weak jellyfish).

But other than that looks good!

    QC Approved 1/3

Mention Timid to outrun a lot more Pokemon after a boost but talk about the MASSIVE drop in power.

Maybe mention Baton Pass Musharna as a teammate; they have excellent synergy together with Combusken (sorta of) being able to deal with Dark-types and taking great advantage of the SpA boosts accumulated by Musharna.

But other than that looks good!

God dammit FLCL I was going to bring up Musharna. I've used them together and Baton Pass Musharna is an incredible teammate. The Swords Dance set has always seemed pretty average to me. Move HP Ice from OO to AC. Oh also mention Eviolite somewhere, particularly if you recieve boosts from Musharna. After that this should be ready to go.

    QC APPROVE 3/3

Unintentional rhyming!) of damage to Combusken (repetition).

    [ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

As powerful as Combusken's STAB moves are, they are both very inaccurate and tend to be (can't sound too negative about it) unreliable. With accuracies of 85% and 70% respectively, you can't rely on Combusken to hit multiple times in a row. Absol removes Ghost-types and Psychic-types that plague this set, while Combusken severely weakens Fighting-types for Absol. (I'm not sure about Combusken handling most Fighting-types very well, but I've personally never used it for that purpose) Combusken adores Spikes support, and Cacturne can provide them while also putting offensive pressure on the opponent. Piloswine can provide Stealth Rock for Combusken, while also defeating many of its counters such as Altaria and Lampent with ease. Golurk is also a another ("also" seems to be popping up more than it really should) solid offensive partner for Combusken, destroying many of its counters such as Grumpig and Muk with ease! One of the best partners for Combusken is Baton Pass Musharna, who is capable of using passing Calm Mind boosts and getting Combusken in for free due to its abysmal Speed. [Other Options]

Combusken is a Pokemon with few other options,. it It can run a Swords Dance set, but it will struggle to find time to set-up, (pretty sure that's an unnecessary comma, but I could be wrong) and many common Pokemon in the metagame can wall it with ease. Combusken can potentially Baton Pass Swords Dances boosts (I'm not sure if that's really a necessary change, but I think it looks better that way) to its teammates, but since it is illegal with Speed Boost there are many Pokemon that can do that fill such a role better. Offensive Water-types such as Samurott, Floatzel, and Basculin can all tank a hit and OHKO Combusken in return with a priority Aqua Jet, ignoring the many Speed boosts that have potentially been acquired. Even Kangaskhan can check Combusken, as Fake Out + Sucker Punch can KO after 2 rounds of Life Orb recoil, but this method of defeating Combusken should only be used as a last resort. (I didn't quit checking at this paragraph, I just didn't notice anything that needed to be changed. Good analysis!)

Any bulky Water-type that is not weak to Focus Blast can defeat Combusken with ease, ; for example: Mantine and specially defensive Ludicolo can switch in with impunity and retaliate with super effective Water-type attacks. Gothitelle is a notable counter because it can trap Combusken and OHKO in return with a STAB super effective Psychic.

Combusken It is also very frail and susceptible to common priority attacks such as Samurott's Aqua Jet and Gurdurr's Mach Punch. A special attacking set is the best set that can be used, as Combusken will struggle to find time to use Swords Dance,(no comma) and the Special Attacker but doesn't need to take a turn to set up its Special Attack. Because Combusken is not overwhelmingly powerful, its best use is utilizing Speed Boost to clean up weakened teams near the end of a match.

    [SET]
    name: Special Attacker
    move 1: Fire Blast
    move 2: Focus Blast
    move 3: Protect
    move 4: Substitute
    item: Life Orb
    Ability: Speed Boost
    nature: Modest
    evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

    [SET COMMENTS]

This is the most effective set Combusken can run, attacking right away to damage the opposition. Fire Blast is the STAB move of choice, hitting many common NU threats very hard, such as Amoonguss, Exeggutor, Cacturne, and Misdreavus, very hard. Focus Blast is a solid secondary STAB, allowing Combusken to hit many Pokemon that resist Fire Blast;(semi), for example,(comma) Miltank, Carracosta, Regirock, and Golem will all fall to a Focus Blast, though the accuracy is less than stellar. Protect is an extremely important move on this set, as it allows Combusken to raise its Speed significantly., since After a Protect,(comma) it is able to outrun nearly every common Pokemon on in the tier! Substitute is the best option in the fourth moveslot,(no comma) because it allows Combusken to scout potential switch-ins and hit them with the appropriate move, as well as avoid a crippling status condition. It also allows Combusken to scout Sucker Punch, which can deal heavy amounts of damage,(no comma) despite the fiery chicken's Dark-type resistance.

    [ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

As powerful as Combusken's STAB moves are, they are both very inaccurate and tend to be unreliable, with an accuracy of 85% and 70% respectively, so you can't rely on Combusken to hit multiple times in a row. Combusken can use Hidden Power Dark or Hidden Power Ice in the last slot to hit Pokemon that would otherwise counter it. Hidden Power Dark can be used to hit the Ghost-types Lampent and Frillish, who that would otherwise wall this set to oblivion. Hidden Power Ice is also an option to hit the common Altaria, who which can otherwise can use Combusken as setup fodder. Hidden Power Fighting or Flamethrower are options over their less accurate counterparts, but the drop in power is noticeable and makes leaves Combusken laughably weak and unable to harm anything. Timid can be used as a nature instead of Modest, allowing you Combusken to outspeed a few extra threats, but the drop in power is significant and Combusken will fail to KO Pokemon that it should be able to. Amoonguss makes a great partner for Combusken, as it can take Aqua Jets with ease and Spore a Pokemon that would counter Combusken. Additionally, the bulk Amoonguss provides gives Combusken something to fall back on if you attempt to sweep too early. Absol is another good teammate because it provides an offensive backbone for Combusken, as they work in unison to remove each other's checks. Absol removes Ghost-(hyphen) and Psychic-types that plague this set, while Combusken severely weakens most Fighting-types for Absol. Combusken adores Spikes support, and Cacturne can provide them while also putting offensive pressure on the opponent. Piloswine can provide Stealth Rock for Combusken, while also defeating many of its counters such as Altaria and Lampent with ease. Golurk is another solid offensive partner for Combusken, destroying as it easily destroys many of its Combusken's counters such as Grumpig and Muk. with ease! One of the best partners for Combusken is Baton Pass Musharna, who which is capable of passing Calm Mind boosts and getting Combusken in for free thanks to its abysmal Speed.

The special attacker set is superior because it does not need to set up,(no comma) and can attack right off the bat. Combusken can potentially Baton Pass Swords Dance boosts to its teammates, but it is illegal with Speed Boost so there are many Pokemon that fill such a role better. Combusken can also take advantage of Sunny Day, but other Fire-types such as Charizard and Emboar can do it much better.
