Virizion: The Unknown Threat

The inherent threat with Virizion is its high Atk and SpA stats - unlike most mons in this tier, either CM or SD sets are completely viable. In addition to being either physically or specially offensive, its movepool and coverage options are very wide. So what kind of sets does this guy run?

The Swords Dance Set
Virizion
- Swords Dance
- Close Combat
- Leaf Blade
- Stone Edge/Zen Headbutt
Other possibilities: Aerial Ace, Return/Frustration, X-Scissor, Substitute, Synthesis

The Calm Mind Set
Virizion
- Calm Mind
- Giga Drain/Energy Ball
- Focus Blast
- HP Fire/HP Rock/Substitute/Synthesis

Two possibilities, both of which are powerful. From what I've seen and based on this, the SD set definitely is the more popular set and possibly the "better" set. Don't underestimate the bulky longevity of the CM set, however.

Despite all of this, Virizion has a huge issue: a laundry list of weaknesses, none of which it can hold up to particularly well.

Oh baby. That SpD is nothing to shake a stick at. IMO, a physically offensive counter/check will perform better, especially against the Calm Mind set. So lets look at our options.

Granbull
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def
Adamant Nature
- Play Rough
- Earthquake
- Thunder Wave
- Heal Bell

This beast is a decent Viriz counter/check, depending on the SD/CM set. Intimidate undoes SD set up somewhat, and a switch in on a Close Combat does a whopping 26%(30%LO) at +1. Even a neutral Leaf Blade does 40%(3HKO w/LO) at best. Additionally Granbull easily kills Virizion with a play rough, which is standard, fairly reliable damage.
"252+ Atk Granbull Play Rough vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Virizion: 402-474 (124 - 146.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO"

Not bad at all. Unfortunately, CM Virizion is a bit more of a problem. Focus Blast tops out at 82% and a +1 Giga Drain has a 20% chance to OHKO Granbull, making Granbull more of a check than an actual counter to CM Virizion. This is made worse by the fact Granbull has almost no chance to outspeed either, unless you're running Scarf with speed investment.

Togetic Not really a viable counter =[

EDIT: Took down Togetic and made some revisions to Granbull's calcs.

More will come later. I'm tired for now. Later, Mates.

Musharna @ Leftovers
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 240 HP / 252 Def / 16 SpA
Bold Nature
- Psyshock
- Moonlight
- Calm Mind
- Heal Bell

+2 252 Atk Life Orb Virizion Leaf Blade vs. 240 HP / 252+ Def Musharna: 238-281 (54.9 - 64.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

+1 252 SpA Life Orb Virizion Giga Drain vs. 240 HP / 16 SpD Musharna: 191-226 (44.1 - 52.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

16 SpA Musharna Psyshock vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Virizion: 242-288 (74.6 - 88.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

The only way Virizion beats Musharna is 2HKOing at +2 Attack Leaf Blade but it will take itself down with Psyshock damage and Life Orb in the process. Musharna meanwhile can force Virizion out and heal itself with Moonlight making it a good check to Virizion.

Granbull and Togetic are only checks. Granbull gets OHKOed by the CM set at +1 as you noted, but the chance is a lot higher with a Life Orb. With your spread Granbull also takes about 30-35% from -1 LO Leaf Blade meaning with SR up Granbull is KOed by +2 Leaf Blade next time it comes in. Meanwhile Togetic needs to run Toxic or Thunder Wave to beat CM Virizion, otherwise Virizion just sets up CM on it and they usually run HP Ice; meanwhile +2 Life Orb Stone Edge will KO Togetic after SR.

With your spread Granbull also takes about 30-35% from -1 LO Leaf Blade meaning with SR up Granbull is KOed by +2 Leaf Blade next time it comes in.
I didn't make the calc I used clear in the post - A +1 (meaning the viriz set up SD already and was intimidated down a stage) Lum Virizion does 40% max - a +1 LO Viriz is still only a 3HKO with leaf blade, if you're running lefties. CM Viriz is a problem for Granbull, but I still think he makes a decent counter for SD and check for CM depending on how your opponent plays.

I think you're right about Togetic though - I was running Lum for some of those calcs rather than LO, so I'll take him down =]

Everyone's favorite fairy pixie:

Uxie!

Uxie @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Relaxed Nature
- Psyshock
- Whatever
- Whatever
- Whatever

A mon that already covers most of the ladder, Uxie is a great counter to Virizion. Assuming you're running little to no SpA, psyshock is still a 2HKO doing between 55% and 65%. And Uxie can take enough hits to get both psyshocks in, even with a switch in.

+1 252 SpA Life Orb Virizion Giga Drain vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Uxie: 148-175 (41.8 - 49.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
So CM Viriz isn't really a problem.

+2 252 Atk Life Orb Virizion Leaf Blade vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Uxie: 179-212 (50.5 - 59.8%) -- 84.4% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
SD Viriz is more threatening, making Uxie a better check than counter. However, some clever switching means you can take a CC instead of a Leaf Blade, which only does 40% at best and makes psyshock 25% OHKO after SR. A little more manageable.

Another possible option.

EDIT: to add uxie =]

Exeggutor @ Sitrus Berry / Lum Berry / Colbur Berry / whatever
Ability: Harvest
EVs: 252 HP / x Def / x SpA / x SpD / x Spe
Bold / Modest Nature
- Psyshock
- Protect / Rest / Synthesis
-
-

+1 252 SpA Life Orb Virizion Hidden Power Ice vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Exeggutor: 281-333 (71.3 - 84.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 252 Atk Virizion Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Exeggutor: 194-229 (49.2 - 58.1%) -- 97.7% chance to 2HKO
0 SpA Exeggutor Psyshock vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Virizion: 272-324 (83.9 - 100%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO
80 SpA Exeggutor Psyshock vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Virizion: 294-348 (90.7 - 107.4%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO (For those looking to OHKO after LO damage)
88 Modest SpA Exeggutor Psyshock vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Virizion: 324-384 (100 - 118.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO (For those looking to OHKO outright)

While a tad shakier against Calm Mind Virizions, bulky Harvest Exeggutor is still a solid response against Virizion in general. The beauty of Exeggutor is that you can pretty much tweak its entire set to your liking, be it item, EVs, or moves, to better handle more bothersome Virizion variants for your team, or just even just try to hit the bare minimum at countering Virizion while functioning effectively against the rest of the meta. This can also teach players to customise sets according to their team's needs, rather than just grabbing a given set with given EVs / moves and taking off with barely any idea on how they would want it to work.

2 life orb hp ice is a ko
This is not a big issue for Sitrus Eggy regardless, but non-Sitrus Eggy can still afford a spread to survive 2 LO HP Ices. (P.S. Non-Sitrus Eggys do not need 252 HP EVs)

252 SpA Life Orb Virizion Hidden Power Ice vs. 248 HP / 100 SpD Exeggutor: 164-195 (41.7 - 49.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Say hello to your fossil counterpart~

Carracosta @ Leftovers
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 248 HP / 192 Def / 68 SpD
Relaxed / Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Aqua Jet
- Stone Edge
-

252 Atk Archeops Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 192+ Def Solid Rock Carracosta: 106-126 (30.1 - 35.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
4 SpA Archeops Earth Power vs. 248 HP / 68 SpD Solid Rock Carracosta: 138-163 (39.3 - 46.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Solid switch-in, can set up SR to deter Archeops from hopping back in as eagerly, and can evade 1 HP Endeavor with Aqua Jet.

Rotom @ Choice Scarf | Levitate
248 HP / 8 SpA / 252 Spe | Timid
Volt Switch / Shadow Ball / Will-O-Wisp / Trick

Bulky Scarf Rotom can switch into any common attacking move from Archeops (Acrobatics, Earthquake, Heat Wave, U-turn) and either burn or threaten out opposing Archeops. Knock Off has about a 50% chance to OHKO and Stone Edge does a ton, but neither move is commonly run on Archeops in this metagame. Acrobatics is usually spammed as well because offensive Rotom is 2HKOed about 90% of the time, but bulkier spreads can take it on more easily. If you're running a balanced team with no room for a bulky Rock- or Steel-type to take on Normal- and Flying-types, bulky Scarf Rotom is a good option to check them. Just make sure you have some priority to back it up because it's pretty terrible at revenge killing Pokemon that aren't weak to its coverage.

I think bulky solrock can handle archeops pretty well. I've been running a 252 hp 252 attack with wil o wisp morning sun stone edge and zen headbutt. It can take a uturn reasonably and the eq + acro set cant touch solrock at all. Most archeops are forced out but if they stay in and stone edge or something then they get burned. Solrock doesnt get worn down as easily either since it can morning sun on the switch out. I havent ran into a knock off archeops but judging from uturn damage, solrock can take one and fire back a wil o or stone edge.

Say hello to physically defensive Quagsire. I feel that Quagsire has a lot of potential in the current NU meta as a stop to not only powerful physical attackers such as Archeops but set-up sweepers as well. First, the set:

Quagsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
- Scald
- Earthquake
- Recover
- Toxic

With the given EVs, no commonly run move is capable of 2HKOing Quagsire even with Stealth Rock on the field. From there, Quag can easily Recover away any damage, safely go for a Scald, or Toxic on the predicted switch. In the end, there's really almost nothing Archeops can do to Quagsire beyond Knock Off or U-Turn out, and with Stealth Rock as prevalent as it is U-Turn isn't always an option for Archeops to just spam. Overall, I don't think Archeops is much of a threat at all to good ol' Quagsire.

Relevant Calcs:
252 Atk Archeops Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Quagsire: 153-180 (38.8 - 45.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Archeops Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Quagsire: 92-109 (23.3 - 27.6%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Archeops Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Quagsire: 90-106 (22.8 - 26.9%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Quagsire Scald vs. 0 HP / 4- SpD Archeops: 192-228 (65.9 - 78.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Piloswine @ Eviolite
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Icicle Spear
- Ice Shard
- Earthquake

Physically defensive Piloswine is a very safe answer to Archeops. Being the fatmon that it is, it takes very little from most of Archeops's attacks and can threaten it back with either its Ice STABs or Stealth Rock (which also hinder any shenanigans from Archeops trying to do hit and run strategies.) Even bulky chops will have a hard time dealing with it because of the threat of Earthquake on a Roost.

Relevant calcs:
252 Atk Archeops Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Piloswine: 106-126 (26.3 - 31.2%) -- 29.7% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock
0 SpA Archeops Heat Wave vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Thick Fat Piloswine: 78-92 (19.3 - 22.8%) -- 3.5% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock
0 Atk Piloswine Icicle Spear (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Archeops: 234-276 (80.4 - 94.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Rhydon @ Eviolite
Ability: Lightning Rod
EVs: 252 HP / 16 Atk / 240 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Rock Blast
- Earthquake
- Roar

Specially defensive Rhydon can handle virtually all Archeops variants with its amazing bulk and typing. Rhydon beats lead archeops with ease, using rock blast to kill it through focus sash. Acrobatics and stone edge do nothing, and Earthquake is not a 2HKO (that being said, if earthquake is being ran, you cannot switch in twice. If this is a main concern you can run a more defensive set as supposed to specially defensive). Note that Rhydon does lose to Earth Power variants, due to Rhydon's mediocre special defense. Furthermore, if Archeops tries to roost, you can predict this and OHKO it with an earthquake. Lastly, U-turn variants will hate having to switch into Rhydon's stealth rocks constantly. I don't know if this would be considered a check or a counter, I guess it depends on the moveset.

252 Atk Archeops Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Rhydon: 132-156 (31.8 - 37.6%) -- 90.9% chance to 3HKO
252 Atk Archeops Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Rhydon: 54-64 (13 - 15.4%) -- possible 7HKO
16+ Atk Rhydon Rock Blast (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Archeops: 324-384 (111.3 - 131.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO (as long as you get 3 hits, it's a dead archeops)

Togetic @ Eviolite
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Dazzling Gleam
- Roost
- Defog
- Filler

Togetic is a very underrated pokemon. Fairy is a great defensive type when not paired with that stupid normal typing that rids of its Fighting resistance.
Dazzling Gleam is a decent shot at 3HKO through resttalk full spdef. If he wants to stick around for long, he'll die with high probability. Even boosted Knock Offs don't do enough at all. Knocking Off Togetic's Eviolite makes its bulk vs neutral attacks much worse, but it doesn't matter because Togetic has solid bulk and relevant resists even without Eviolite. Phydef Togetic's use is to take those fighting moves and knock offs, so Eviolite will be eventually knocked off when using phydef Togetic. This may tempt you into using Rocky Helmet, but Eviolite gives your Togetic general use when you aren't facing those Fighting / Dark coverage users. Roost keeps it healthy long-term. Defog is Togetic's niche and addresses its SR weakness. Last slot can be whatever. Best off fitting your team's needs, but it beats Malamar regardless of the last moveslot.

You can put a bit more SpA, which guarantees 3hko and NP is a cool set too but!

Musharna @ Leftovers/Kee Berry/Colbur Berry
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 240 HP / 252 Def / 16 SpD
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Psyshock
- Signal Beam
- Moonlight

Signal Beam Musharna can switch into any variant of malamar and threaten a 2hko with Signal Beam. While Mala isn't necessarily set up fodder, you have the ability to outlast it with Moonlight. Item choice is always preference, but Kee Berry and Colbur Berry both have a stronger matchup vs. Mala because Mush takes a solid 50-60% from +1 Knock Off from RestTalk Malamar. More offensive squids can dbond or switcheroo mush, but they'll have to rely on a crit to beat it.
+1 252 Atk Malamar Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 240 HP / 252+ Def Musharna: 302-356 (69.7 - 82.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

I mentioned the fact that Mush 2hko's resttalk and I figured providing a relevant calc for an offensive malamar would be a nice idea considering we are to provide a good, all around answer to the pokemon mentioned. I understand where you're coming from, though, so I appreciate the suggestion :)

Sorry I see non spc-def malamar calcs and I get disturbed and jump to conclusions, Colbur berry can live the first SP and 2 knock offs so I can see it being a counter ;p.

Gentlemen I feel as I have stumbled across a counter that is so successful at being oblivious to the world that it is unaware completely of the threat that Malamar poses to it.

In its natural state I present to you the blissfully unconcerned, the delightfully vapid and the dangerously innocuous Quagsire.

"Oh, hello there. I see you are building your stats up Malamar, that is nice. Would you mind terribly if I did it as well? It looks like such swell fun."

Quagsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 212 HP / 84 Atk / 212 Def
Impish Nature
- Curse
- Earthquake
- Recover
- Waterfall
Well here we have our gentleman or lady of the hour. Now you maybe wondering why I decided upon a physical set to counter the Malamar, quite simply unaware works for both offensive and defensive, as this ability ignores both their offensive and defensive stat gains. Thus allowing you to keep on standing there and act like a smiling punching bag for your foe. The second factor that makes this work is that Unaware does not counter your own stat gains. So as our dear friend Malamar continues to show off his super strength to comically incognizant Quagsire, our dear chap simply considers himself lucky at the change of scenery since his last trip out of his metallic, spherical prison. When our friend finally does notice the laboring Malamar he can simply dispatch him at a whim with no second glance.

To prove this is true here are some relevant calculations,

252 Atk Malamar Superpower vs. 212 HP / 212+ Def Quagsire: 86-102 (22.3 - 26.5%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

Our dear friend obviously curses the fact that he has forgot to bring a sandwich with him on his trip.

252 Atk Malamar Superpower vs. +1 212 HP / 212+ Def Unaware Quagsire: 57-68 (14.8 - 17.7%) -- possible 9HKO after Leftovers recovery

Again our chum Quagsire contemplates the potential of pruning a nearby lemon tree and curses his lack of opposable thumbs. This joke has now run its course.

To conclude, Quagsire can continue to curse and recover until he finally deems the Malamar a nuisance enough to finally do away with the squid. Leaving an only mildly perturbed salamander to wish for his lunch, but sadly he cannot learn wish.

Scyther switches into every single one of Malamars attacks, outspeeds even choice scarf variants thanks to its own Choice Scarf and can ohko it at +1 defense with bug bite. Scyther doesn't really like losing its scarf to Knock Off, but its still really fast so w.e calcs below

252 Atk Technician Scyther Bug Bite vs. +1 252 HP / 0 Def Malamar: 388-460 (103.1 - 122.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Granbull @ Choice Band
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 212 HP / 252 Atk / 44 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Play Rough
- Ice Punch
- Thunder Punch
- Earthquake

These first calcs all assume Gurdurr got up two Bulk Ups and then you intimidated it, which is a bit generous imo as you should usually switch in as soon as they send in their Gurdurr:

+1 252+ Atk Gurdurr Ice Punch vs. 212 HP / 0 Def Granbull: 147-174 (39.3 - 46.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252+ Atk Choice Band Granbull Play Rough vs. +2 252 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Gurdurr: 176-210 (47 - 56.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

If it only got one Bulk Up:

252+ Atk Gurdurr Ice Punch vs. 212 HP / 0 Def Granbull: 98-116 (26.2 - 31%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

252+ Atk Choice Band Granbull Play Rough vs. +1 252 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Gurdurr: 236-278 (63.1 - 74.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

So long as you only let it get to +1, keep Granbull at solid health, and/or keep rocks up on their side of the field, you should be able to handle Gurdurr easy mode. You're in a bit of a sticky situation if they carry Poison Jab, but that isn't very common I don't think since the only relevant things it hits are Mega Audino and Granbull.

Weezing @ Rocky Helmet / Black Sludge
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
- Sludge Bomb
- Will-O-Wisp
- Pain Split
- Toxic Spikes / Taunt / Fire Blast

Don't really need to get creative with this one, simply because Weezing is the tier's premier no-drawbacks check to every fighting type in the metagame. Gurdurr will at most do 22% with its first Knock Off, and from there it's a wrap simply due to Weezing's immense bulk and great typing, giving Gurdurr 0 viable options for coverage to hit it SE. Furthermore, it has access to a Taunt faster than gurdurr, preventing it from setting up, and Sludge Bomb does a hefty 30%. Easy.
