SPECIAL ATTACKING CRAWDAUNT

snap snap tbh imo

[SET]
name: Special Attacker
move 1: Surf
move 2: Dark Pulse
move 3: Ice Beam
move 4: Superpower / Hidden Power Grass
item: Life Orb
ability: Adaptability
nature: Rash / Modest
evs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

 • Surprise factor - every Crawdaunt you've ever seen is physically based with maybe the rare Ice Beam - this thing will throw your opponent utterly off guard and send their gameplan into chaos.
 • A more than usable base 90 Special Attack and Adaptability gives real power behind its attacks - not quite the standard of the physical sets, but it aims to hit the significantly weaker special defense of most answers to Crawdaunt.
 • Annihilates almost every Crawdaunt switchin aside from Poliwrath (OHKOs Tangrowth and Qwilfish (guaranteed with SR) while comfortably 2HKOing Alomomola and physically defensive Roselia with a decent shot at Ferroseed). Bear in mind a resisted Surf is stronger that a neutral Ice Beam, thanks to Adaptability.
 • Superpower allows a physical set to be bluffed and also slays dedicated special walls, having a good chance to 2HKO Ferroseed while destroying Cryogonal and having a small shot at OHKOing Clefable. HP Grass is a solid 2HKO on Poliwrath, Crawdaunt's premier counter, and defeats Water/Ground types reliably.

[SET COMMENTS]

This set allows Crawdaunt to turn the tables on its common counters, employing the sheer power of its STAB moves along with Ice Beam to gain sterling super effective coverage on RU's premier walls. Crawdaunt's oft-overlooked base 90 Special Attack provides overwhelming strength combined with a Life Orb, boosting nature, and its wonderful ability, Adaptability. Surf OHKOes Quagsire with a small amount of prior damage, while Dark Pulse is a guaranteed OHKO on Qwilfish after Stealth Rock and a comfortable 2HKO on Alomomola. It is also Crawdaunt's weapon against bulky Psychic-types such as Uxie. Ice Beam is used to simply OHKO Tangrowth and 2HKO Amoonguss and physically defensive Roselia

There are two main options for the last slot, both of which give this set a particular niche. Superpower is preferred for its chance to 2HKO Ferroseed and annihilate dedicated special walls such as Cryogonal and Clefable. Hidden Power Grass can be used to astonish your opponent by blowing past Crawdaunt's hardest counter, Poliwrath, in a mere two hits. It also guarantees the OHKO on Quagsire, although bear in mind that due to Adaptability, Dark Pulse and Surf are stronger than Hidden Power Grass unless the opponent is 4x weak to it.
Crawdaunt's Speed is still abysmal though, so it's not going to sweep any time soon. Crawdaunt's defenses haven't gotten any better either, but as this set is focused on breaking down dedicated physical walls, neither flaw is a major issue for Crawdaunt.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

A Life Orb and a positive Special Attack nature are necessary for this set to function, so a simple EV spread is used to allow Crawdaunt to reach its full offensive potential while Speed tying with Bouffalant, Golurk, and Omastar. A Modest nature should be used if using Hidden Power Grass, but otherwise, Rash is preferred to keep Superpower's damage output high. Substitute is another option in the final slot in order to take advantage of the switches this set forces, but sacrifices coverage. Crunch is an option to better deal with Lanturn, but is inferior to Superpower otherwise. Hidden Power Fire is another potential choice to slaughter unsuspecting Ferroseed and Escavalier in one blow with a little prior damage, but serves no other purpose and forces an imperfect Speed IV. Speaking of which, Dragon Dance is viable to boost Crawdaunt's Speed, but such a set is outclassed by physical variants. Powerful physical attackers that enjoy weakened or outright fainted physical walls and bulkyp Water-types are particularly good partners for this set; Entei, Kabutops, Emboar, and Feraligatr are prime examples of such. As this set has no means to boost Speed, paralysis support from teammates such as Uxie and Amoonguss is greatly appreciated. Both also match up well against Poliwrath, while Ferroseed is another reliable user of Thunder Wave. All three share good defensive synergy with Crawdaunt and provide further utility such as absorbing Toxic Spikes or laying down entry hazards to aid Crawdaunt's rampage.

Crawdaunt without Hidden Power Grass is still outright walled by Poliwrath as well as unable to defeat faster opponents using Electric, Grass, Fighting, or Bug attacks. This means a reliable teammate to deal with these threats such as Roselia or Amoonguss is recommended. Steelix is another teammate to deal with everything Crawdaunt fears bar Fighting- and Grass-types packing Hidden Power Fire. Emboar also has excellent defensive synergy with Crawdaunt as well as a potent offensive symbiosis, being able to tank Bug- and Grass-type attacks aimed at Crawdaunt. Finally, Golurk has no fear of the Bug, Fighting, and Electric moves that Crawdaunt hates, and both Emboar and Golurk highly appreciate the gaps this particular Crawdaunt opens up in the opposing team by defeating Alomomola and Tangrowth.

Manly as fuck set. No need for crunch because Dark Pulse already 2hkoes Slowking and that mon shouldn't stay in against Crawdaunt anyway. Instead of Crunch you should use HP Grass, because it is a superior option by getting the 2hko on 2 of the best counters to Crawdaunt (Poliwrath and Quagsire that doesnt get def drops). If you really want to keep a physical move for last slot, Superpower is a superior option because it is able to 2hko those annoying Ferroseed that wall your mon otherwise.

idk if this will be approved or not just posting beause this set is manly as fuck.

I used this sort of but with waterfall/crunch/ice beam/hp electric. Killing poliwrath was always pretty cool. I started using the set just to break down that old stall team with missy/steelix/poliwrath/slowking/roselia/idr. This set look pretty cool but I would AC hp electric. If you partner this thing with rose, your pretty good to go, set up spikes on everything that walls it.

I actually kind of like this set and will probably end up approving it soon.
 • I would slash HP Grass before Superpower and move Crunch to AC (as Trop said). Getting a hit on Poliwrath is very important because it always defeats DD Crawdaunt, is better than Lanturn, and Ferroseed has to worry about Superpower on other sets too. Ferroseed is still annoying though which is why Superpower should still be slashed.
 • Because most of the things that Crawdaunt lures in and beats (Grass physical walls and Water-types) are not issues for Gallade most of the time I would replace it with something like Kabutops, who really has a rough time against Tangrowth, some Amoonguss, and Poliwrath.
 • Mention Emboar as a good way to take on Bug- and Grass-types and Golurk as a way to take on Bug-, Fighting-, and Electric. Both also struggle against some things Daunt lures in like Tangrowth or Alomomola and can appreciate their absence. As of how it stands Amoonguss and Roselia lose to Durant and Escavalier badly so they aren't enough.

Agree with everything Swamp-Rocket said and have updated - I think Superpower might be slightly better than than HP Grass; partly for the ability to not instantly reveal your set if you're knocking out something that's weakened, and partly for Ferroseed. Poliwrath IS a threat, but it might not be common enough to justify a whole moveslot's first slash. Both are slashed though, so the user knows the positives of both and can choose accordingly. Thanks a lot for the input!

Like the set. Like S-R, I'll probably approve it soon. Couple of things though:

 • Keep Superpower as the primary slash in the last slot, but not for the whole "not revealing your set" thing. Smart players will catch on with the lower damage output from it. (most Crawdaunt that run Superpower are Banded) Killing Cryo and dealing major damage to Clefable and Ferroseed is more important than the hit on Poliwrath imo.
 • Steelix is p. good for everything but Fighting. (immune to Electric and resists Bug while handling Escavalier nicely) Grasses with HP Fire can be problematic too, so be sure to scout for those.
 • Higher mention of Emboar since Crawdaunt beats Momo, Slowking, and Qwilfish, which happen to be the 3 biggest checks / counters to Emboar that I can think of (Entei too for that matter)

Something to note -- with HP Grass slashed there the 4 Atk EVs are worthless if you choose to run it. Just saying....

I've written this up - QC, give me one more approve (and anything you think needs to be changed) and then GP can start having a look!

Since the current analysis format only allows for one EV spread, the one chosen by the writer matches with the first slashed move. That's why Rash is slashed first, to correspond with Superpower. If it's really THAT important, AC can mention that the 4 Atk EVs be moved to HP. That's really petty though and pretty much common sense (I don't think there are any analyses on-site that even do that, for the record).

Since this Crawdaunt set is pretty slow and has no way to boost its Speed stat, i'd probably give paralysis support a small mention in the AC to help Crawdaunt get the jump on a few faster Pokemon and probably sweep more easily later on. Pokemon such as Amoonguss, Ferroseed, and Uxie can all provide paralysis support reliably through Stun Spore and Thunder wave, and can support Crawdaunt in other ways as well. Amoonguss can take on the Grass- and Electric-types that Plague Crawdaunt so much, spread around Sleep as well as paralysis, absrob Toxic Spikes, and help against Poliwrath if Crawdaunt happens to be running Superpower. Likewise, Ferroseed can also take these Grass- and Electric-type moves, and can set up Spikes to help Crawdaunt inflict offensive pressure between the hazards damage and Crawdaunt's Special Attacks. Uxie also takes on Poliwrath rather well, can take pretty much any hit at least once bar things like Escavalier's Megahorn, and can set up Stealth Rock for Crawdaunt

Otherwise

QC Approved 3/3

This set allows Crawdaunt to turn the tables on its common counters to physically-based sets, employing the sheer power of its STAB moves along with this set's calling card, Ice Beam, to gain sterling super effective coverage acrosson RU's premier walls. Comments:
I felt it made more sense to say 'its usual counters' along with 'turns the tables'. Emphasizes those sets usually counter it, but it turns the tables on it.
Is Ice Beam really this set's 'calling card'? Because i'm not so sure about that, honestly.
Not a big fan of downed, honestly.
Both Emboar and Golurk appreciate Alomo gone a lot, and Emboar likes tangrowth gone too, since it walls 3/4ths of its moveset and can tank one scarf blitz, so i just took out that respectively.
