Crobat (Full Revamp)+

[SET]
name: Brave Bat
move 1: Brave Bird
move 2: Taunt
move 3: Roost
move 4: U-turn / Substitute
item: Leftovers
nature: Jolly
evs: 104 HP / 152 Atk / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
<p>This set takes full advantage of Crobat's new toys in DPP and is a solid choice to lead any team. Brave Bird is vital to the set, as it gives Crobat a strong, reliable STAB attack. Taunt is a great move for any lead with blazing Speed, and it allows Crobat to stop other pokemon from setting up or recovering. In fact, the combination of Taunt and Roost allows Crobat to come out on top against many walls. Roost also helps cope with Brave Bird's recoil and Stealth Rock damage accumulated over the course of the battle and rids him of his Rock, Ice, and Electric weaknesses for the turn. The final slot is useful for scouting; U-turn can get in a counter, and Substitute can buy Crobat an extra turn on predicted switches, as well as stall if Toxic Spikes are on the field.</p>

<p>The EVs allow enough Attack to score a likely OHKO on a Max HP Machamp with Stealth Rock. They also grant enough HP to reach a leftovers threshold, while still retaining an odd HP stat for switching in to Stealth Rock.</p>

[SET]
name: Special Sweeper
move 1: Nasty Plot
move 2: Sludge Bomb
move 3: Heat Wave
move 4: Hidden Power Fighting / Hidden Power Ground / Roost
item: Life Orb / Leftovers / Lum Berry
nature: Timid
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
<p>With its blazing Speed and ability to sharply boost its Special Attack in a single turn, Crobat can function well as a special sweeper. Sludge Bomb is the main attack here and can do decent damage to most things after a Nasty Plot. Heat Wave complements Sludge Bomb nicely by frying the Steel-type Pokemon who try to absorb your attacks. After a Nasty Plot, Heat Wave will do a minimum of 73% to a max HP / max Special Defense Sassy Bronzong. The final slot depends on what your team has more trouble with. With a single Nasty Plot, Hidden Power Fighting kills Tyranitar with Stealth Rock on the field guarenteed, but fails to OHKO Heatran. A +2 Hidden Power Ground will OHKO all forms of Heatran but will come up short against Tyranitar. Roost is also an option and can be used on switches to recover Life Orb recoil.</p>

<p>Life Orb is the preferred item to score some important KOs, but Leftovers and Lum Berry are viable alternatives if using Roost.</p>

[SET]
name: Sleep Inducer
move 1: Hypnosis
move 2: Taunt
move 3: U-turn / Roost
move 4: Air Slash / Aerial Ace
item: Leftovers
nature: Timid
evs: 124 HP / 132 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
<p>With 130 base Speed, it is safe to say that Crobat usually has the fastest sleep in the game. This makes Crobat a fine choice to lead your team, potentially incapacitating an opponent before it gets a chance to respond. Taunt is also a great move on speedy Crobat. Anything this fast that can prevent status, recovery and other assorted goodies can be the bane of many a stall team. It also works very nicely with Hypnosis, as you can Taunt your opponent's Sleep Talker, preventing it from attacking in its sleep. </p>

<p>U-turn lets it get out and send in a counter, while getting in a light hit. Crobat's defenses may not be stellar, but Roost is still a good option for recovering as an opponent locked into a Fighting or Bug attack is forced to switch. Beware of Roosting against Choice Band Earthquakes though. In the final slot, you have your choice of Flying STAB. Brave Bird and Hypnosis are illegal together, so you are restricted to the weaker options listed above. Air Slash feeds off the lower of its offensive stats, but has higher base power when compared with Aerial Ace, and comes with a handy 30% flinch rate. </p>

<p>The given EVs are designed to OHKO minimum HP Heracross with Air Slash. Max Speed is needed to outspeed Shaymin-S and tie with other Base 130s. If you opt for Aerial Ace, drop the Special Attack EVs, switch to a Jolly nature and put the leftover EVs into HP or Attack.</p>

[SET]
name: Choice Bat
move 1: Brave Bird
move 2: Cross Poison
move 3: Pursuit
move 4: U-turn
item: Choice Band
nature: Jolly
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

<p> With a 120 Base Power STAB move in Brave Bird at its disposal, Crobat is just asking for a Choice Band. However, that is about all Choice Band Crobat has going for it because the type coverage is awful. The loss of physical Hidden Power wasn’t great for the speedy bat. Cross Poison isn't much help for type coverage, but it leaves a nice dent in some of the weaker Electric-types, like Electivire and Jolteon. Pursuit is a pretty great move for Crobat as well, and will allow it to function as something of a revenge killer in the same vein as Weavile—just a bit faster with less offense, and better resistances. U-turn rounds out the set allowing you to get in an appropriate counter, when the inevitable Rocks and Steels appear.</p>

[Other Options]
<p>In terms of physical alternatives, Poison Fang, Steel Wing, Bite, and X-Scissor are options, but none of them really outshine the suggested moves above in any appreciable way. A Choice Specs set is plausible, but not recommended as Crobat barely breaks 360 Special Attack, even with the item boost. Giga Drain can leave a nice dent in Swampert and Rhyperior.</p>

<p>In the support category, there is the ever irritating Confuse Ray that Crobat uses supremely well thanks to its Speed as well as Haze or Whirlwind to clear the field of stat boosts. Screech is a less direct approach to phazing an enemy, but it can work nicely with U-turn. Screech as they switch in, then U-turn out, hitting their now lowered Defense on the way. Rain Dance can be used also, as Crobat boasts high speed and gives a scare to the Grass Pokemon that trouble Swift Swimmers.</p>

[EVs]
<p>You should generally maximize Speed on Crobat. The ability to outspeed Adamant Gyarados after a Dragon Dance is too important to pass up. Other than that, use a Timid nature if Crobat is using mostly special attacks, or Jolly for physical versions. If you're using Air Slash, then at least 128 Special Attack EVs are recommended to OHKO minimum HP Heracross.</p>

<p>For the Brave Bat set, an alternate EV spread is 168 HP / 88 Def / 252 Spe. This greatly increases Crobat's ability to take physical hits to counter the game's toughest fighting pokemon. After a Swords Dance, a +2 Adamant Lucario's Extremespeed will never OHKO Crobat after Stealth Rock. Additionally, Crobat will do a minimum 60% back with Brave Bird which can prove fatal if Lucario has suffered any damage. You can also just max Speed and Attack, as Brave Bird coming from a max Attack Crobat has a chance to OHKO Gengar, but it should be noted that the OHKO is guaranteed if you switch Crobat's item to Sharp Beak.</p>

[Opinion]
<p>Crobat has some nice new additions that make it quite a bit more versatile than it was in Advance. The addition of Brave Bird, Nasty Plot, and U-turn make it quite unpredictable indeed. Additionally, its 4x resistance to both of Heracross' STABed moves is always welcome. The only thing it misses from Advance is physical Hidden Power and Shadow Ball for its Choice Band set. As before, it seems likely that Crobat will skate that line between OU and UU. Still, Crobat fulfills a very interesting niche on many teams. It's not a sweeper, and its not a wall, but does an excellent job at countering deadly threats such as Breloom and Infernape, and can shut down stall teams with fast Taunts.</p>

[Counters]
<p>Zapdos is the best counter for Crobat. It resists Crobat's Flying attacks, is immune to its Hidden Power of choice, and will often pack Sleep Talk to render Hypnosis useless. Otherwise, Rock-, Steel-, and Ground-types like Metagross, Tyranitar, Skarmory, Bronzong, Jirachi, Rhyperior, Swampert, etc. slow down most sets, but should be wary of the special sweeper. The fortunate thing is that it can put them to rest with Hypnosis. The others in the base 130 Speed group (Jolteon and Aerodactyl) both make fine counters for it, too. The rest of the more specific counters are determined by the chosen set—for example, Blissey walls the Special Sweeper set, but would struggle with the Choice Bander.</p>

I'd avoid use of the word "gamebreaking" personally.

I always just run 248 Speed for Skymin, I guess that 4 doesn't really matter but I don't see the point in tying with Jolteon and Aerodactyl whom both aren't OHKOed by Crobat that often but seriously threaten Crobat's existence.

Hey that alternate Brave Bat set's alt evs are really cool I think LonelyNess and I should use that. I didn't really know Crobat had physical durability. Note to self.

It's worth mentioning the drawbacks and benefits of the HPs on the NP set (HP Ground OHKOs something usually faster than you on the switch, but isn't guaranteed to OHKO you, while HP Fighting hits something that will OHKO you harder so HP Fighting is probably better)

Can I ask why you opted for Sludge Bomb as Crobat's primary STAB on the NP set? I've found Air Slash to be more useful. Slightly better coverage, flinch rate. I've always found Sludge Bomb to be an inferior option with the exception of Zapdos really. Just consider it.

Here's my write up of NP Bat is you want to use it to modify / build upon yours.

http://www.smogon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47290

Sludge Bomb is the primary STAB for one Reason... Power. This is something Crobat desperately needs. Air Slash has 107.5 BP and 95% accuracy to Sludge Bomb's 135 BP. Air Slash isn't needed as much since the only thing it hits super effective that Heat Wave doesn't already is fighting types. Sludge Bomb does lose the ability to hit a few things like Swampert hard, but hitting Zapdos harder is always a plus (you do over 60% with just one plot!). I'll give Air Slash a slash.

Introduction of Skymin, Hypnosis accuracy change, and getting Heat Wave means Crobat is in need of a revamp.

lol, weary means tired. wary means aware.

I can attest to Air Slash's lack of power. It couldn't even KO Lanturn after a NP with about 30% health left. Granted it didn't have Life Orb, but still, that's some shitty damage output.

Air Slash is incredibly weak, Sludge Bomb is better and I'm glad people are agreeing :D. The 2 most common fighting types (Heracross and Lucario) die to Heat Wave anyway. So Air Slash is really only useful for Swampert, Machamp and ground types (although Heat Wave does a lot to ground types) and flinch hax.

@ CWW: No offense, but that is a horrible example. Lanturn is known for its ability to take special hits and the fact that Lanturn resists Air Slash.

I would advocate Sludge Bomb anyway, I just wanted to point out the faulty logic.

I seriously urge you to proofread before posting. I don't mean to sound harsh, but missing out things such as [SET COMMENTS] tags is a bit..:/

Also there were quite a few capitalization mistakes, that you would probably would have picked up on if you proofread. If you didn't know about capitalization, I would go and read this again. I would have presumed you already had though.

Nevertheless, all work should be appreciated. Nice work :D

Okay, I didn't forget about this. I've edited in all the changes and re-read it. Everything sounds good here.

One thing to add, I think Curse + White Herb may be an option on the Brave Bird set because Crobat can sweep a bit lategame with Brave Bird (may be impractical because intimidates will ruin it), as can Rain Dance + Damp Rock over Taunt or U-turn... any opinions? Maybe other options material, but I do see a lot of people using Crobat for Rain Dance.

EDIT: Played with the Brave Bat with Substitute tonight... set is pwn. Substitute breaks stall even easier and really lets Crobat have a showing in battle. For example, I ended up facing a Calm Mind Sleep Talking Spritomb, and after hitting him with a couple Brave Birds, he rested. I set up a Substitute and Taunted him and he switched out to a Gyarados, only to be 3HKOed thanks to switching in and Substitute.

Sorry to bump, but added Rain Dance in other options after looking at the Zapdos revamp.

Was also thinking about giving the Brave Bat a mention for a Toxic Spikes team, as I used the Substitute version of it to devastating effects with Toxic Spikes on the field.

Yes on the Rain Dance in Other Options - I remember I wrote a Rain Dance set, but eventually it just got scrapped. Other Options is probably the best place for it.

I would just write a sentence or two saying how Substitute and Roost works well in a Toxic Spikes team due to Crobat's high Speed.

Heat Wave on Choice Bat? It 3HKOs Skarm I think (and at least does something against Metagross, Bronzong and Steelix). That's enough for being worth a mention.

I'd say a screech set is somewhat viable with something like
-Screech
-U-turn
-Brave Bird
-Pursuit
because of his speed and access to U-turn and Pursuit.

No, it's not. If it 2HKO'd sure, but a 3HKO is a no-go. It'll just Roost stall you or just Roost and Whirlwind you out raking up more SR damage.

Screech + Pursuit seems gimmicky without STAB and the fact a lot of Crobats switch ins resist dark (Magnezone, Tyranitar (who'll Pursuit you on the U-Turn), Heatran).

Edit: I still say Air Slash is better then Sludge Bomb but w/e I'm in the minority here.

Still, it is the only way you damage other Steel types... keeping on using Roost against a 3HKO is also incredibly risky, and to me it seems that people ignore this; 10% burn rate and 6.25% critical hit shouldn't be ignored as well, because both can mess up Skarmory. Roost stalling is also pointless because of Roost and Heat Wave both having 16 PP. Roost+Whirlwind, on the other hand, means that Skarmory will be pretty injuried at the moment Crobat leaves the field. Finally, it should be noticed that a Crobat with a neutral nature and 0 SpA EVs will kill Skarm in two hits if Skarm switches in on Stealth Rocks. Not bad enough to dismiss the move as if its utility was zero imo...

How about LOBat? Heat Wave / Brave Bird / Hidden Power Ground / Roost sounds alright. Could use some testing, but I'm just tryingt to throw some alternatives to the table.

Crobat also makes an excellent Sunny Day lead.

Crobat @ Heatrock
Naive - Inner Focus
EVs: 252 Special Attack / 252 Speed / 4 Attack
Sunny Day
U-Turn / Taunt / Air Slash
Hypnosis
Heat Wave

Having Base 130 Speed, Crobat can effectivly cripple the opposing lead and proceed to set up Sunny Day. Heat Wave is there to help out on Crobat's lower Special Attack since it will be boosted during this ordeal to be more effective in hurting switch-ins that the opponent will do one their pokemon is asleep. U-Turn is really for scouting out the opponent's move to help counter them later on. I suppose Taunt or Air Slash could be used over U-Turn if the user would rather them.

Sounds like Other Options material to me. It doesn't really have a specific reason to set up Sunny Day over anything else plus it totally makes Heatran ruin the set.

The best part about Crobat is Speed combined with passable defenses, so a -Defense nature may not be a good idea just to power up U-Turn.
