Crustle (QC: 3/3)

QC: [3/3]
GP: [0/2]

[Overview]
  • Great Defense and decent Attack.
  • Has access to Shell Smash although its Speed stat is very poor.
  • Access to Stealth Rock and Spikes.
  • Pretty bad typing.
  • Looks cool as hell?
[SET]
name: Shell Smash
move 1: Shell Smash
move 2: Stone Edge
move 3: X-Scissor
move 4: Earthquake
item: White Herb / Life Orb
ability: Sturdy
nature: Adamant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

  • Shell Smash boosts Attack and Speed by 2 for a sweep.
  • Stone Edge and X-Scissor are good STAB attacks.
  • Earthquake allows Crustle to hit Steel-types like Steelix who would otherwise wall this set.
  • Sturdy basically guarantees Crustle a Shell Smash as long as it is in full HP and no hazards are down.
  • White Herb restores Crustle's defense stats to take priority such as Honchkrow's Sucker Punch and Hitmontlee's Mach Punch easier, while Life Orb provides Crustle with more power.
[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
  • Crustle has a pretty shallow movepool, therefore the moves listed are the only moves it should run on an offensive set.
  • Rock Blast can be used over Stone Edge to hit Pokemon behind Substitutes, however, it is a very unreliable move.
  • One might consider using Jolly instead of Adamant, but the Speed it gains from Jolly is almost useless. At +2 with Adamant Crustle reaches 378 Speed which outspeeds base 120 Speed Pokemon such as Sceptile and Alakazam (who are basically the fastest common Pokemon in the tier.)
  • Lum Berry can be used to prevent any crippling status from runing Crustle's sweep.
  • Poliwrath's above average Defense and resistance to both of Crustle's STABs allows him to take hits from Crustle and hit back with a super effective STAB attack.
  • Therefore, Grass-types such as Rotom-C and Tangrowth make good partners to Crustle who can hit Water-types with a super effective Grass-type attack.
  • Steelix can take a +2 Earthquake and hit back hard with Gyro Ball.
  • Gligar equipped with Eviolite can take on Crustle at +2 and hit back with Earthquake and Roost off any damage.
  • Cofagrigus and Dusknoir's excellent Defense stats can take any move Crustle throws at them and cripple him with Will-O-Wisp.
  • Moltres makes an excellent parter as well since it is immune to Will-O-Wisp and can take anything Steelix uses (bar Stone Edge.)
  • Crustle also appreciates Pokemon with access to Rapid Spin since they can keep hazards off the field which allow Crustle to keep Sturdy active.
[SET]
name: Spikes
move 1: Spikes
move 2: Stealth Rock
move 3: Stone Edge
move 4: Toxic / X-Scissor
item: Leftovers
ability: Sturdy
nature: Impish
EVs: 224 HP / 252 Def / 32 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

  • Crustle has an excellent base 125 Defense stat which it can use to set up the the hazards it has access to, Stealth Rock and Spikes.
  • Stone Edge and X-Scissor makes sure Crustle isn't Taunt or set up bait.
  • However, Toxic can be used to cripple Pokemon such as Blastoise, Poliwrath, and Gligar.
[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
  • Again, Crustle's shallow movepool leaves him with few other movepool options, therefore the moves listed are the most effective.
  • A specially defensive spread can be used instead of a 224 HP / 32 Def / 252 SpD and a Careful nature can be used.
  • Mental Herb can be used to prevent Crustle from being Taunted for a turn and allows him to set up Stealth Rock without worry, especially since Sturdy keeps it from being KOed.
  • Crustle will appreciate Ghost-type Pokemon such as Rotom and Dusknoir who can keep the hazards Crustle sets up on the field as well as bulky Grass-types to take Water-type attacks aimed at Crustle.
[Other Options]
  • Like mentioned in both sets listed, Crustle's movepool is very shallow...
  • Crustle has access to Swords Dance and Hone Claw, but they are both outclassed by Shell Smash because it boosts his Speed by 2 as well as its Attack.
[Checks and Counters]
  • Steelix's enormous Defense stat and Steel-typing makes him an excellent check to Crustle's offensive set, as do bulky Ghost-types with Will-O-Wisp such as Dusknoir and Cofagrigus.
  • Gligar equipped with Eviolite can take on both sets of Crustle's as well. Gligar's Defense allows him to take hits from Crustle while Gligar has Taunt to prevent Crustle from setting up hazards or hitting Gligar with Toxic.
  • Sableye has access to both Taunt and Will-O-Wisp to stop Crustle in its tracks especially since its ability Prankster gives both of these moves priority.

I'd include something about it being the obligatory rock type with low speed and high defense and how it faces stiff competition as a Shell Smasher from Omastar. Then talk about how Crustle's main advantage over Omastar is dual STAB. Also take out the mention in Blastoise as it is officially UU.

Sadface, didn't notice Blastoise went up to UU... Thanks for catching that! :D

You forgot to mention Sableye in the Checks / Counters! :o

priority taunt / WoW ain't gonna be enjoyed by crustle....

I've found that SS Crustle to function best in the lead spot, due to his auto-sash from Sturdy and his lack of enjoyment of switching in due to hazards and such. That being said, maybe mention Lum Berry as an item, for the sake of beating Sleep Leads/warding off that first burn from Sableye.

Mentioned, thanks! :)

You should mention mental herb in AC for the second set, if you planning on using Crustle as a lead spiker of sorts.
