Welcome to the new Doubles Ladder Challenges! If you've ever wanted to show off your Doubles skills, deepen your understanding of the tier, or try out an awesome new metagame, this is your chance to do so:

    In A Nutshell:

Every two weeks, there will be a new challenge posted on this thread by me. In order to participate, you must create a team that meets the specifications of that challenge (Ex: If the theme was Monotype, you would make a team with only one type of Pokemon). Additional information about each challenge will be posted here as well. People who were able to meet certain criteria at the end of the laddering period would receive reward as well.

    Signups and Qualifications:

Fill in the sign up form below, and make sure you use a brand new alt that hasn't been laddered with. You will need to sign up each round as you will use a different alt name each time, as well as have different experiences. It also makes it easier for us to keep track of your progress if you use a new post. You don't have to sign up for every theme; you may sign up as often or as late as you want, as long as you do your best at completing the challenge for the round. Also don't start laddering until you sign up, please! In order to qualify for a prize, a Glicko2 ranking of at least 1900 with a provisional less than 100 must be attained.

    Prizes:

Anyone who meets the qualifications specified above will receive 1point on the Smogon Doubles leaderboard, as well as their name in the Hall of Fame. In addition, the person with the highest ladder ranking at the end of the laddering period will receive 3 points and temporary voice in #doubles with consideration for permanent status bumps if you continuously do well.

    Theme One: Dark Horse

Since Doubles has been around for several months now, people are starting to settle into familiar patterns, so for the first theme for our new ladder challenge, you will have to create a team using at least 2 Pokemon that are below 4% in usage. Here's a list of Pokemon that meet this:

Admittedly, this guy is strong as all get out, and shouldn't be this low in usage, but whatever. Abuse time! Rage Powder is fucking handy when trying to get a DDance off TTar or give Mienshao a Swords Dance, or even to give Deo-A another lifeline when Protect has been used already, drawing in the heavy fire and letting my other Mon wreak havoc. I am considering heavily going for Effect Spore just to troll Fake Out/ESpeed users, as I dropped it on Deo-A (will explain that one below. This guy checks most rain teams in a way even Ferrothorn can't. Sleep, Redirection of Attacks, and just generally making a mess of the opponents strategies. However, it lacks the staying power of Ferro, as well as not being a solid counter to Kingdra, making Rain teams a bit dicey if not played right. Amoongus should be gettign tons more usage, and not just on Trick Room teams. It's a certified badass.

Specially-Oriented Deoxys. A bit of a change from Nyttyn's/Pocket's sets, but still effective on this team. HP Fire for roasting Steels not named Heatran, especially Scizor/Ferro/Escavilier. Psycho Boost, because with a boosting nature, you will kill things at -2. Ice Beam for Genies, especially Lando-T, who can hit a lot things on my team hard with EQ. the rest you should know if you saw Nyttyn's Uber-Long post, so I'll keep this short. As much fun as the mixed version is, this guy can wreck face even harder on the special side and does not give two fucks about Intimidate Spam.

    - Drain Punch

Deo-A's Physically Based partner. Originally, I had been using weavile in this spot, but it was starting to hold me back, as, even with super fast Fake Out/Taunt at my disposal, it lacked the bulk and power to really be useful against every team. Now, I can still FakeOut/PsychoBoost on the first turn, and, if I need a better matchup against something, swap out with U-turn to the check I need while Deo-A protects and lasts another turn. I can't tell you how many times I've swapped TTar into a Psyshock just to DDance up and RockSlide/Crunch my way through things.

Weavile had a similar role here however, and when my team was a rain team originally, Low Kick coming from it would OHKO the big dinosaur, leaving my Politoed and Kingdra free to wreck face. However, it didn't last. Weavile is still damn good though, just not for this team.

Edit: Updated ACRE and Glicko2 Ranking. Played 53 matches with a 45/8 record. All but 2 of those losses were within the first 10 matches.

Edit2: Ran another team up with 2/3 of the same Dark Horses. Made the requirements again, which is pretty funny.

The team is basically made to get the win condition for Deo-A and Kingdra. Spore/Fake Out is such a great lead pair. Bulky Thundurus-I (set is in the Doubles thread) survives so many things with good investment, and fires off Prankster TWaves and Taunts, messing up setup mons and keeping your opponent one or two steps behind. Once your opponent is weakened enough, begin tearing through it, first with Bulky Specs Politoed's Surf (Top has Wide Guard to take a hit, then outspeeds the next turn with that extra 1 point of speed creep), then bring in Kingdra (4x resist to Surf), and finally, Deo-A to finish off any stragglers that Kingdra may be having issues with, like Vaporeon.

    Marowak:

Move over, Deo-A!. When Holding a Thick Club, Marowak's attack rises to 568 max. This is huge, and it requires no turn of setup, so Marowak can come out swinging right off the bat. Marowak can even use swords dance to boost his attack to insane levels, if you think that is necessary. He is used best on a TR team, so his low speed becomes a good thing. Good partners include TR users, and anybody weak to Electric. Special mention goes to Cresselia and Jellicent, as the former's Levitate and Helping Hand allow Marowak to spam a boosted Earthquake with impunity. Jellicent can rest easy knowing that most Electric moves won't hit him, thanks to Lightningrod. In turn, Jellicent can, aside from TR, is to attack from the special spectrum. Marowak dislikes statuses, especially burn, so having a safeguard/cleric is a way to circumvent that.

    Scrafty:

Scrafty is a Fake Out user that can also sweep. Fighting/Dark is nearly unresisted. Any of Scrafty's abilities work well here. Moxie allows Scrafty to recover from Intimidate, as well as make it easier to sweep. Shed Skin allows Scrafty to recover from statuses. Intimidate lowers the attack of other Fighting-types that would give Scrafty trouble. He works well with TR users, especially Psychic-types like Cresselia and Musharna, as they can use Helping Hand to boost Scrafty's attack, as well as defeating the numerous Fighting-Types that would give Scrafty trouble.

And as for the Ladder Ranking:

    The team (open)

    [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]
Basically this is a (rather gimmicky) team built around getting as much mileage out of Hippowdon's surprisingly powerful Earthquakes as possible. Musharna provides Trick Room and Gravity support so he can go fast and not have to worry about type immunities, and also provides Telepathy Helping Hand support. Tangrowth was chosen as the fourth member because, thanks to its typing and amazing physical bulk, it only takes ~15% from Earthquake and can provide useful Rage Powder support. Hitmontop is generally good and helps with the slight Bug weakness the team has, while Jellicent takes some of the Trick Room-setting burden off Musharna and gives us a semi-decent Rain check. Excadrill should need no explanation, as it's pretty much obligatory for a Sand team (how is this a dark horse?), but I run Sand Rush on it despite the Trick Room presence on my team so I can maintain an offensive presence even when I can't keep Room up (or if Hippo dies early). It also appreciates the Gravity that Musharna brings so it too can spam powerful, fast, and difficult-to-resist Earthquakes.

I'll post sets later as I might ladder with this some more (and I never saved any interesting replays so I should do that too).

Sooo after one too many opponents that thought using Thunder Wave on Musharna would be a polite thing to do I'm going to take a little break and just post the team:

    Hippowdon @ Soft Sand
    Trait: Sand Stream
    EVs: 252 Atk / 252 HP / 4 SDef
    Brave Nature
    IVs: 0 Spd
    - Ice Fang
    - Fire Fang
    - Earthquake
    - Protect

Hippowdon's EQ is stronger than any spread move Tyranitar can dish out, and is nearly as powerful as its Crunch. As such, it's the move I use most often on this set- the fangs are explicitly for hitting annoying 4x weaknesses such as Landorus, Dragonite, Genesect, and Abomasnow. Soft Sand is chosen over Life Orb to boost Earthquake's power without compromising its useful bulk.

    Excadrill @ Life Orb
    Trait: Sand Rush
    EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 HP
    Adamant Nature
    - Earthquake
    - Rock Slide
    - Iron Head
    - Protect

I honestly don't see how this is a dark horse given how ridiculously clutch it is. Really every sand team should have one, although given that many Sand teams devolve into Trick Room I can sort of see why they don't...but expecting to keep Trick Room up for an entire game is wishful thinking so I just run boring Sand Rush Excadrill to keep some offensive presence outside Trick Room.

    Musharna @ Mental Herb
    Trait: Telepathy
    EVs: 252 SDef / 252 HP / 4 SAtk
    Sassy Nature
    IVs: 0 Spd
    - Gravity
    - Psychic
    - Helping Hand
    - Trick Room

I knew when making this team that I wanted it to abuse Gravity+Earthquake, but that requires partners that can avoid EQ damage without relying on typing or Levitate. Enter Musharna- Telepathy means my Ground-types can spam EQ all day without worrying about hitting their partner. Musharna also doubles as the Gravity and Trick Room setter. Helping Hand for spread moves is very useful, while Psychic allows it to break sashes and generally not be dead weight once the field effects are up. Mental Herb allows me to freely ignore the fact that Taunt and Encore exist (mostly).

It's probably worth pointing out that, while this is a Gravity team, Musharna is the only setter, so I rarely get it up more than once and sometimes not even then. Due to the fact that Gravity is only situationally helpful (there's not much reason to set it up against a mostly grounded team), this isn't too big of a deal.

    Tangrowth @ Leftovers
    Trait: Regenerator
    EVs: 252 HP / 4 SDef / 252 Def
    Relaxed Nature
    IVs: 0 Spd
    - Power Whip
    - Sleep Powder
    - Rage Powder
    - Protect

Hey look, a mon that's actually obscure and not just freakishly low on usage! Tangrowth is here because, like Musharna, it's basically immune to Earthquake. Instead of Telepathy though, Tangrowth gets it through its typing and humongous physical bulk letting it basically ignore the damage. Leftovers helps it maintain its bulk and counter-acts sand damage (this is a really terrible sand team in that regard). Sleep Powder allows it to eliminate one problematic target per game provided I predict well (and have either Gravity up or the RNG on my side), and lets it pick on full Trick Room teams- my team is fairly fast for a Trick Room team so it's to my advantage to not let it stay up in most mirror matches. Rage Powder is the bane of gimmicks everywhere, thwarting Terracott, Guard Split Blissey, Skill Swap Slaking (i usually just ignore this one and smack it though), and others while also letting Tangrowth serve as a resilient bodyguard for my sweepers.

The EVs on this one could probably use some tweaking- while Tangrowth's physical bulk is fantastic, even resisted special attacks (especially rainy ones) tend to do much more damage to it than I'd like.

    Hitmontop (M) @ Lum Berry
    Trait: Intimidate
    EVs: 252 Atk / 252 HP / 4 SDef
    Adamant Nature
    - Fake Out
    - Close Combat
    - Wide Guard
    - Sucker Punch

oh man i bet you haven't seen this guy before!!!

Standard Hitmontop is standard. I run Lum Berry instead of the usual Fighting Gem/Eject Button because I find Top is a status magnet thanks to constantly using a certain contact move on moths and mushrooms. It also has the advantage of not forcing him out against anything threatening to use Will-o-Wisp. The moves should be self-explanatory- Wide Guard is chosen over Feint so he can dodge allied EQs (and protect me from Heat Wave/Muddy Water which is huge) while the rest are obligatory.

    Jellicent @ Life Orb
    Trait: Water Absorb
    EVs: 4 Def / 252 HP / 252 SAtk
    Quiet Nature
    IVs: 0 Spd
    - Scald
    - Shadow Ball
    - Trick Room
    - Protect

It's probably more that I'm just using him in the worst possible way but Jellicent seems rather underwhelming for not being a dark horse. It was chosen last, to serve as a back-up Trick Room user, a second Bug resist, and as a half-assed Rain check. It also pretends to check Cresselia by doing ~35% with a "super-effective" Shadow Ball and then taking more damage in return from LO recoil+sand+Psychic damage. I would run Leftovers on this but its damage output is pathetic without LO so I don't think it would be a good idea.

Nice progress everyone :) Two things to note: One, if you make it to the Hall of Fame, if you like you can post your team and/or information about the Pokemon you used (or even good replays if you have any) so people can learn more about what you tested. Two, if you make it to the requirement and are trying to compete for voice, please be clear as to what your Glicko2 is versus what your ladder ranking is so I can know if you qualified or not. Also, be sure to include your Glicko2, ladder ranking, and deviation in order to be included, as well as a screenshot showing it for verification.

(Sorry this one is a bit small)
    The Team:
    [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]
So, basically, this is a goodstuff team that aims to mess up the opponent's strategy, then blow holes through their team with Darkrai and Deoxys. Both are underestimated often, as they have powerful respective 90/135/125 and 180/180/150 attacking stats. Thundurus is really a goodstuff team's best friend, spamming priority Thunder Waves and Taunts. I run Max SpD and HP investment so that it can tank hits very well, and while uninvested, its SpA hits a respectable 284. Hitmontop is the Fake Out user, and also packs Sucker Punch and Wide Guard, which are helpful in several situations, as well as Intimidate. Rotom-W is a great Rain counter, and since it is Specs, it functions very well against Trick Room if the opponent manages to get it up (which happens a fair bit). Garchomp is used for hitting other Dragons like Kyurem-B and Dragonite, and does a good job giving Sand teams a rough time. Darkrai is the team's main special attacker, and between Dark Pulse, Focus Blast, and Ice Beam, it can hit most of the metagame for Super-Effective damage. Deoxys-A is the physical sweeper, and people are often suprised that I run a Physical set over a Special set, which would have moves with higher base power (Psychic, Ice Beam, etc). However, the main reason I like a physical set is Fire Punch access. With Fire Punch, Ice Punch, and Zen Headbutt, it can also hit the metagame for Super-Effective damage. It is very frail though, so I usually use it as an offensive lead or late-game cleaner. So that's my team in a fairly big nutshell.

To everyone who's already completed the challenge, great job! It's the halfway point in terms of how long this challenge is running for, so if you haven't gotten in then it's not too late to do so. Also, in terms of the competition for the winner of the challenge, in case this wasn't clear, the winner will be chosen at the end of the period based on who has the highest ladder ranking, so it would be best to avoid decay by playing continuously even if you've already hit the requrements. In addition, good luck to anyone competing, as it's very close as of now.

Btw, I just noticed, on the Hall of Fame, Doesn'tKnowHowToPlay is ranked based on Glicko2 while everyone else is ranked based on ACRE.

Oh, made a mistake there. Thanks for the catch. Also, for those of you who wish to try this challenge keep in mind that there are just a few days left.

EDIT: One day left guys, if you're still trying to hit the requirements or become the highest peaker, you've got till around this time tomorrow to do so. Ladder hard :)

Laddered a second team using almost the same Dark Horses as the first time (dropped Mienshao for Hitmontop) and got a much better Glicko Ranking, so I'd like to submit it instead if I could? I left both teams up since I did well with both and they are very different teams with different playstyles.

I'll keep laddering with it though.

Ok, so this week's challenge is now over! Congratulations to Aquasition for winning the challenge (and peaking #1 on the ladder). Thanks to everyone who participated! Now for the new challenge:

    Theme Two: Monotype x2

The first challenge was meant to be easier and allow everyone time to get used to the metagame and get a feel for the challenges, but this challenge is meant to test your teambuilding ability and metagame knowledge. This is like a standard Monotype challenge, but since this is Doubles, the twist is that you select two types that can be used on your team (Ex: If you select Grass and Ground, you can use Roserade and Garchomp on the same team, but not a team of Roserade, Garchomp, and Crobat). It does not matter whether a Pokemon on your team has one of the selected types as its primary type or its secondary type, so long as they have it. You cannot use a Pokemon that lacks one of the types that you choose. There are at least 6 Pokemon of every type in the tier, so you can select any type.

Once again, to complete this challenge, you must have attained a Glicko2 rating of at least 1900 with your provision under 100. The provisional is the number following the +/- under "Glicko2" in your rank.

This challenge will be over on June 12th, so try to finish it before then.

A goodstuffs team that tries to take full advantage of rock slide's good coverage and side effect, while maximizing the potential for game breaking hax with priority thunder waves and swaggers on top of the flinching. Archeops is the main dark horse (lol at thundurus-i being at such low usage, it's easily an S-ranker). Usually partnered with Latias since she can set up tailwind if needed, provide extra coverage against fighting types, and coverage against steels (HP Fire), and Heal Pulse to keep Archeop's bad ability a non-issue. While heal pulse worked when I first started lattering, I realized later on that it was hardly getting any use when I faced higher ranking opponents, since most moves targeted at arch usually KO it, so I replaced that move (haven't decided what to keep in place of it although dragon pulse/meteor seems like the obvious choice). Archeops wasn't even all that bad when it was at low health anyways since the rock slide flinching was still useful. All in all, he's a pretty good pokemon, and didn't feel like an inferior Terrakion since his flying gem acrobatics can do awesome stuff like one shot Amoongus, Conk, Hitmontop (regardless of intimidate), and latios.

Well, the ladders had to reset, so I couldn't verify my Ground/Dark team's rating :<. Off to a great start for it this ladder though.

    Show Hide
    ~The Team~

    Sableye @ Mental Herb
    Trait: Prankster
    EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
    Careful Nature
    - Fake Out
    - Taunt
    - Will O' Wisp
    - Recover

Sableye was actually the last pokemon I added on this team. Looking at the team so far, it had trouble with Fighting types especially, and didn't enjoy Trick Room much either. I was limited to only Ground and Dark-types, and this guy is probably one of the most important members of the team. With his Fighting immunity, Fake Out immunity, priority Taunt, and priority Will O' Wisp, he can be a complete troll. Fake Out and Recover help him give my team momentum and keep his survivability up. Originally I ran Sitrus Berry, but I found Mental Herb was very nice for stopping priority Taunts from Thundurus and the likes. The EV spread gives maximum special bulk, allowing him to take on Special Attackers fairly well.

    Tyranitar @ Chople Berry
    Trait: Sand Stream
    EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
    Adamant Nature
    - Crunch
    - Rock Slide
    - Low Kick
    - Protect

Tyranitar was the very first choice on my team. I chose the given types with Sand in mind. The set is more or less standard, and is seen all the time in VGC for those who are familiar.

    Excadrill @ Life Orb
    Trait: Sand Rush
    EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
    Adamant Nature
    - Earthquake
    - Rock Slide
    - X-scissor
    - Protect

Excadrill is the primary offensive pokemon for my team. Everyone knows it is a menace in Sand, the reason it is banned in Singles. This set aims to straight-up KO as much as possible, and with Life Orb, it does a good job at that. Protect is pretty obvious, allowing it to guard against Mach Punches and other forms of priority.

    Landorus-Therian @ Yache Berry
    Trait: Intimidate
    EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
    Adamant Nature
    - Earthquake
    - Rock Slide
    - U-turn
    - Protect

At the point of choosing Landorus, I had Excadrill and Tyranitar chosen. I wanted a good way to keep momentum going and with its Ground and Sandstorm immunities, Landorus looked like a good choice. Those who are familiar with VGC know that Landorus-Therian is extremely popular, and with good reason. Intimidate, as well as massive attack allow Landorus to maintain a lot of pressure on the opponent. Earthquake and Rock Slide are the obvious spread moves. I enjoy being creative with the third attack in Landorus's moveset, I have tried everything from Swagger to Imprison. U-turn, while the normal choice, seemed fitting since I wanted to maintain momentum, and U-turn allows me to Intimidate the foe several times while still dealing damage. Protect needs no explanation.

    Gastrodon @ Rindo Berry
    Trait: Storm Drain
    EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
    Modest Nature
    - Earth Power
    - Muddy Water
    - Ice Beam
    - Recover

Gastrodon was a great choice, because three of my six pokemon are weak to Water, and Rain is clearly problematic for this team. The spread allows for good offensive ability. Protect is usually better on offensive Gastrodon than Recover, but given that Burns from Sableye would be everywhere and Intimidates from Landorus as well, I figured being able to Recover would be helpful, and it was (see the Replay, shows the usefulness of Recover). The attacks are more or less standard, Ice/Ground gets a lot of Super-Effective coverage and Muddy Water is good against many threats, and has a handy chance to lower Accuracy.

    Darkrai @ Expert Belt
    Trait: Bad Dreams
    EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
    Timid Nature
    - Dark Pulse
    - Focus Blast
    - Ice Beam
    - Protect

Originally I had Weavile in this slot, but it soon became obvious I needed more Special Attackers, and I didn't need another Fake Out user, so the switch to Darkrai was very wise. Darkrai is more or less a specially based Weavile anyways, having the same speed, and the exact same Dark/Fighting/Ice coverage. Protect was useful for avoiding Fake Out and other priority, as Darkrai isn't very bulky and would prefer not to have to tank those.

Oh and before I forget, I have one replay of the team in action against an interesting Rain team:
    http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/smogondoubles-21422230

Also, since we get 1 point for each team, I'll put this back up so it can be counted (good thing I saved the photo):

    Team # 2

Nice job to all who made it :) A few things to mention:
    1. After discussing it with some of the other project leaders, the point allocation for hitting the requirements has changed. You receive 1 point for each alt you use that makes it, with the winner receiving 3 points and temporary voice in #doubles
    2. Don't forget to post your screenshots and alt info if you plan on participating
    3. It's not too late for those who'd like to join! There's still plenty of time to earn yourself some points :)
    4. I've updated the OP with points totals and such
