[SET]
name: Standard
move 1: Stone Edge
move 2: Will-O-Wisp
move 3: Toxic / Reflect
move 4: Fire Blast / Fire Fang
item: Leftovers / Wide Lens
nature: Naughty / Adamant
evs: 176 Atk / 80 SpA / 252 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]

Entei has been a generally lackluster Pokémon ever since it was introduced, and it remains in an ignored state in D/P; although the new generation brought Entei many improvements, those improvements have been insufficient to raise it from the quagmire of BL. Among the best thing that happened to it was Stone Edge, which has the wide type coverage of Rock-type attacks and works off Entei's impressive 115 base Attack. Will-O-Wisp is also a very helpful move to burn offensive threats such as Garchomp and Salamence, to which Entei has no other reply outside of Hidden Power. However, Entei still doesn't have a very good STAB physical attack; Fire Fang, at its pathetic 65 base power, does less damage than Stone Edge even after STAB, if the differing accuracies are ignored.

Stone Edge and Will-O-Wisp constitute the core of this moveset. With the recommended EV spread, Entei will do over 50% to Salamence switching in that don't have more than a few points invested in HP and Defense, even after Intimidate. However, the standard bulky Gyarados may suffer as little as 37% damage, Tyranitar resists Fire and doesn't care about Stone Edge because of its high Defense, and Garchomp and Swampert resist both Rock and Fire, Entei's offensive options on this set. Fortunately, all four despise being burned by Will-O-Wisp; Entei may even become audacious enough to attempt to stall and subsequently Stone Edge Gyarados to death with Reflect, which is actually possible because after a burn and a Reflect, the standard bulky Gyarados's Waterfall does a mere 23% at maximum. If Entei uses Reflect, though, another of its defects becomes apparent: Entei is utterly incapable of harming bulky Water Pokémon that rely on special attacks, such as Vaporeon, Suicune, and Milotic. Toxic is its best choice for wearing them down, and is especially annoying against those without Rest.

A Naughty nature and the suggested EV spread should be used for sets with Fire Blast, while Adamant with 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe is favorable for those with Fire Fang. The least straightforward portion of this set happens to be the selection of said Fire move. Although Fire Blast is a special attack, it trumps Fire Fang in overall power assuming Entei has an Adamant nature, maximum Attack EVs, and no Special Attack EVs, because Fire Blast has nearly double the base power of Fire Fang. However, Fire Blast's accuracy is a bit shaky, which reduces its average power; because of that, Fire Fang also has a greater chance of OHKOing Heracross, but assuming both hit, the chance becomes equal. Fire Fang does perform significantly better against Roserade. The most powerful factor in favor of Fire Blast is its greater damage on many common defensive and semi-defensive Pokémon; Fire Blast OHKOes both Skarmory and Forretress, whereas Fire Fang 3HKOes and 2HKOes, respectively. With the recommended spreads, Fire Fang only does 40% at maximum to Tangrowth, while Fire Fang will do far more than sufficient to OHKO. Additionally,Magnezone and Metagross are hit much harder by Fire Blast, as their Special Defense is substantially inferior to their Defense; Gliscor is almost always 2HKOed by Fire Blast, and Hippowdon takes much damage as well.

This Entei has enough Attack to both hit a bonus point due to the mechanics of natures and, as already mentioned, 2HKO most Salamence without Leftovers. This alone provides enough reason to run maximum Speed, in order to tie with Salamence and therefore possibly knock it out before it is capable of responding. Matching Zapdos is also helpful for the first strike, as Special Defense is Entei's weakest stat. By dumping the remainder of the EVs into Special Attack, Entei can guarantee the OHKO with Fire Blast against Skarmory, even if it has a few points of Special Defense, and the standard Weavile.

As for the item, Leftovers is, as usual, for reliable healing. Although it is a Fire-type and has the common weaknesses of Water, Rock, and Ground, Entei also sports 115 base HP, which makes it the one of the most defensive Fire-types in OU (second only to Heatran), and therefore it can take some neutral and resisted hits well. The standard set for Entei is also one of the best candidates possible for Wide Lens, as all its attacks besides Reflect have imperfect accuracy. Wide Lens will boost Stone Edge to 88% accuracy, Will-O-Wisp to 82.5%, Toxic and Fire Blast to 93.5%, and Fire Fang to 100%.

[SET]
name: Calm Mind
move 1: Calm Mind
move 2: Lava Plume / Flamethrower / Fire Blast
move 3: Substitute
move 4: Hidden Power Ice / Hidden Power Grass
item: Leftovers
nature: Timid
evs: 184 HP / 148 SpA / 176 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]

Entei's high HP makes it one of the few special attackers that can conceivably attempt to overcome Blissey through special attacking alone. Calm Mind boosts Entei's average base 90 Special Attack and mediocre base 75 Special Defense enough that it should eventually be able to at least 2HKO everything in the game. One of Entei's greatest assets is its ability to create Substitutes that are worth over 100 HP, thereby forcing Blissey to use two Seismic Tosses to break each one; combining this with Entei's Pressure ability will wear at Seismic Toss's PP rapidly.

The choice between the Fire moves and the Hidden Powers is interlocked between the two slots. Lava Plume has a high burn chance with which to threaten Garchomp,Tyranitar, Gyarados, and others before Entei has many Calm Minds, while Fire Blast is much more powerful but not nearly as reliable. Ultimately, Flamethrower is the best option for an Entei that intends to sweep with six Calm Mind boosts, because it is both very accurate and the attack that lets Entei beat Blissey most easily, as it has a good chance of 2HKOing, all Calm Minds considered. Hidden Power Ice is good for Salamence and Garchomp, while Hidden Power Grass hits Rhyperior harder and 2HKOes Swampert without any boosts. With Hidden Power Grass, Lava Plume's viability increases because Entei then can't hit Dragons. Either way, Lava Plume is decent for Tyranitar, who takes only 26% at maximum from an unboosted Hidden Power Grass and less from Fire Blast or Flamethrower.

184 HP EVs gives Entei 417 HP total, which has been chosen for a very specific reason. Assuming there are no adverse weather conditions, Entei and Blissey enter the field simultaneously, and Blissey uses Seismic Toss immediately regardless of what Entei does, Entei can make 7 Substitutes before its HP is cut too low. As Blissey is incapable of breaking a single Substitute from Entei with one Seismic Toss, Entei is free to use Calm Mind once after each Substitute turn. Therefore, by the time Entei is making its seventh Substitute, it will have Calm Minded six times, and after Blissey uses Seismic Toss the same turn, its Substitute will remain intact.Entei would now have a 46.4% chance of 2HKOing Blissey with Flamethrower after including the burn chance, which granted isn't the most appetizing risk because if it doesn't 2HKO Blissey it will faint. However,Entei would also have wasted 28 of Seismic Toss's 32 PP by the time its seventh Substitute breaks, so a portion of preparing Entei to sweep should be eliminating at least four of Blissey's Seismic Toss PP, which isn't too complicated to accomplish. A safer course is to simply begin using Flamethrower after 5 Calm Minds, which is a guaranteed 3HKO;Entei will gain enough Leftovers recovery while Blissey uses Softboiled to make more Substitutes. Fire Blast will always 2HKO Blissey at five Calm Minds, but risks missing and subsequently being stalled out of PP.

The Speed, along with the Timid nature, is sufficient to outrun all Pokémon at base 90 Speed. Along with that also come Garchomp and neutral Speed nature base 100 Pokémon, and Jolly Heracross. The rest is invested in Special Attack to give Entei's unboosted attacks a bit more force.

[SET]
name: Choice Band
move 1: Stone Edge
move 2: Fire Fang
move 3: Return
move 4: Iron Tail / Will-o-Wisp
item: Choice Band
nature: Adamant / Jolly
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]

Entei's physical movepool received a significant boost with the advent of Stone Edge, but it still is very limited, with just barely enough to round out a Choice Band set. Stone Edge is for type coverage, and Fire Fang is a lackluster STAB move. Strangely enough, Return is the most powerful non-Giga Impact physical move that Entei gets, and is a vanilla move to hit Pokémon in general. The last move can be either Iron Tail or Will-o-Wisp. Iron Tail hits Tyranitar and Rhyperior super effectively, while Will-o-Wisp can surprise incoming Garchomp and whatnot.

An Adamant nature will boost Entei's Attack and ensures that Stone Edge will 2HKO bulky Gyarados after Intimidate, but a Jolly nature lets Entei outrun all 90 and 95 base Speed Pokémon. Either way, Entei should have maximum Attack and Speed.

[SET]
name: Sunny Day
move 1: Sunny Day
move 2: Fire Blast / Lava Plume
move 3: SolarBeam
move 4: Hidden Power Ice / Hidden Power Fighting
item: Life Orb
nature: Modest / Timid
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]

Entei's special movepool isn't much wider than its physical movepool, but its special attacks are more powerful and have better type coverage. Sunny Day complements its Fire STAB and SolarBeam, and eliminates its Water weakness, while Hidden Power fills up the remainder of the set. After Sunny Day and Life Orb, Fire Blast is surprisingly powerful. Assuming a Modest nature, Garchomp takes a minimum of 52%, and Salamence 59%. SolarBeam annihilates Rock and Water-types (Swampert in particular), but still leaves Entei susceptible to Dragons. For that reason, Lava Plume remains viable in the Fire move slot, but a much better solution is to use Hidden Power Ice. Additionally, SolarBeam must be used sparingly, because a Tyranitar switch-in will force Entei to charge, and Entei can only hit Tyranitar with a 60 base power, albeit super effective, attack before it dies to Stone Edge. Hidden Power Fighting can 2HKO Tyranitar and also lands a super effective hit on Heatran, another Pokémon Sunny Day Entei has trouble with.

A Modest nature is preferred for the extra damage, as it guarantees a 2HKO on bulky Tyranitar with Hidden Power Fighting and an OHKO on Garchomp with Hidden Power Ice. Timid's extra Speed is often quite welcome, though.

[Other Options]

Shadow Ball or Bite can hit Gengar and Starmie harder than Entei's other moves. Aside from that, Entei has nothing else of worth that hasn't been mentioned.

[EVs]

When in doubt, run 252 Speed on Entei and maximize an offensive stat. The specifics of the more finely tuned EV spreads have been discussed in the appropriate sets.

[Opinion]

Entei received numerous improvements in D/P, but nothing spectacular enough to boost it from its seat in low BL. It still suffers from a sub-par movepool and is a Fire-type upon which bulkiness is wasted. Taking 25% from Stealth Rock without an immunity to Spikes is poor, not being immune to Sandstorm makes it worse, and having common weaknesses in Water, Ground, and Rock seals Entei's fate.

[Counters]

Water-types that use their Special Attack are the best counter to Entei, especially Milotic and Starmie. They aren't severely impaired by a burn, and have super effective Surfs with which to hit Entei's weak 75 base Special Defense. Milotic's Marvel Scale even increases its Defense, and Starmie shakes off Toxic with Natural Cure. Milotic, Slowbro, and Vaporeon fear Toxic, but Starmie also ignores that, and Suicune can Rest it off. Swampert can't really take either status well, but also has Earthquake in its repertoire. Tentacruel is completely immune to Toxic and even takes SolarBeam well with its Poison subtype canceling out Water's Grass weakness; it also has excellent Special Defense and ties with Entei in Speed. Empoleon works similarly, except it is neutral to Fire, resistant to Stone Edge, and slower.

Garchomp outruns Entei and OHKOes with Earthquake, but must avoid being burned by Will-o-Wisp or Lava Plume; Flygon is almost exactly the same, except it can only tie with it. Aerodactyl dislikes Stone Edge, but is much faster than Entei and OHKOes with Choice Banded Stone Edge. Salamence fears burns less, because it has many viable special attacks with which to hit Entei, including Hydro Pump and Draco Meteor. Dragonite is easily the least apt Dragon for countering Entei due to lack of Intimidate and a Rock weakness, but it can survive a Stone Edge and reply with Earthquake. Hariyama has a natural Rock resistance and essentially a Fire resistance thanks to Thick Fat and can Cross Chop or Stone Edge Entei, but like many others, it hates burns. Snorlax also has Thick Fat and often sports Rest to clear itself of status, and can Curse and Earthquake.

Tyranitar can easily take any offensive attack from Entei barring a burning Lava Plume, and its Sand Stream ability completely incapacitates the Sunny Day set. Additionally, Tyranitar has decent Special Defense, which is boosted further by Sandstorm, and consequently can counter the Calm Mind set. Rhyperior dislikes burns and Hidden Powers, but has very high Attack and Defense, so even Iron Tail is no obstruction. Ground-types like Donphan and Hippowdon counter the Choice Band set well.

I think the bit about Mence and Chomp should be reworded slightly. Stone Edge is hitting Salamence quite hard, a good chance of a 2HKO with those EVs. Maybe say:

..to burn offensive threats such as Salamence & Garchomp, the latter which Entei has no other reply outside of Hidden Power.

Or something similar, like changing Salamence to Gyarados as you talk about it later in the analysis.

Sage, stop being so evil and eating up all the analyses :(
Tyranitar can easily take any offensive attack from Entei barring a burning Lava Plume, but its Sand Stream ability completely incapacitates the Sunny Day set
I'm not sure what you're trying to say here; TTar's SS messing up the Sunny Day set or the Sunny Day messing up the Sandstream?

For the Standard set, something like this might be better.

move 1: Lava Plume
move 2: Will-o-Wisp / Reflect
move 3: Hidden Power Ice / Hidden Power Ground
move 4: Roar / Toxic / Sunny Day
evs: 180 HP / 152 SpA / 176 Spe

Entei draws in a lot of sweepers (which is part of his "selling point"), so I would rather do everything possible to fuck them up. Between Lava Plume, WoW and Reflect, physical attackers will have a hard time getting in.

HP Ice covers Specs Mence, who isn't that concerned about a burn. HP Ground is mostly for Heatran. Roar might seem a bit shitty but it's good for getting rid of Ninjask and Agility/BP Scizor. It also lets you check what's being sent in. Sunny Day if you need something to get rid of the Sand/Hail after Tar, Aboma and Hippo are gone. It sort of messes up Suicune, Milotic, etc. too.

I'd probably drop the SunnyBeam set altogether. Or integrate it with the Standard, simply by adding Solarbeam as an option over Hidden Power.

For the CM set, only list one STAB move, just to make it look cleaner. Personally, I think Lava Plume is your best option. Fire it off early so you might cripple Gyarados, Garchomp, etc. Burn rate has a nice synergy with Calm Mind too (although Earthquakes will still break your Sub, so eh...yeah). Leave the mentions of Flamethrower and Fire Blast in the set comments though.

I would rather have Rock Smash on the CB set than Iron Tail. Always 2HKOs Tyranitar (since it won't miss) and only does slightly less to Heatran than Stone Edge (again, it won't miss). Iron Tail doesn't even guarantee a OHKO on minimum HP Tar.

Would Double-Edge work for the Choice Band set instead of Return, or is the recoil too much for Entei?

I ask because you say that Return is the highest damaging neutral move that Entei has on that set, but Stone Edge seems to the the number one choice.

eh questionable site has these sets but Great Sage's explanations are like not there ~_~

Also Great Sage...

MixEntei is actually pretty viable in OU, with a Mild nature, HP Electric, Stone Edge, Lava Plume / Flamethrower, and Shadow Ball. It would be EV'd to outspeed Lucario, and KO with Lava Plum and Flamethrower. I made a set around this I just have to dig it up or remake it. I feel the set actually worked good in OU, and with Eruption it just became better even though those aren't allowed yet.
