[SET COMMENTS]

This Misdreavus set is one of the most common and deadly sets, fulfilling numerous roles. This set has two main differences from the Nasty Plot and Will-O-Wisp sets, both of which add some utility and immediate power to Misdreavus, while also taking away some late game sweeping power or durability. Shadow Sneak is the first difference, as a STAB priority attack will deal some nice damage for revenge killing purposes, including OHKOing Gastly (with Stealth Rocks in play) and any variant of Abra. It also allows Misdreavus to take care of Croagunk without being forced to trigger its Sucker Punch while keeping its Substitute intact.

Substitute and Life Orb are very important on this set, because as long as Misdreavus Substitutes on a Munchlax switch-in, it can 2HKO some Munchlax before being hit by Pursuit, and 3HKO the most specially bulky Munchlax due to Pursuit not KOing without Attack EVs. While Thunderbolt can be tempting to use over Hidden Power Fighting because you can EV Misdreavus to get an extra Attack point, the loss of the ability to 2HKO Munchlax is almost never worth it. Not to mention that Hidden Power Fighting gives you perfect coverage with Shadow Ball.

Oran Berry could possibly be used on this set to add some durability, but Life Orb is superior to it for many reasons. Firstly, getting the 2HKO on some Munchlax is very important, and Munchlax can often KO Misdreavus without triggering the berry. Not to mention that Shadow Sneak is rather weak without a Life Orb boost, and it's needed to OHKO Gastly and Abra.

Since Misdreavus is so deadly from behind a Substitute, it benefits from any Pokemon that gives it a chance to set up a Substitute. Munchlax and Lickitung help Misdreavus out by luring Choiced Fighting-type attacks, which allow Misdreavus to switch in and set up a Substitute. Pokemon like Aron or Water-types who lure out Croagunk are also helpful, since Misdreavus can easily switch in and set up a Substitute on Croagunk.

This Misdreavus set has trouble with Stunky. Stunky can switch into Misdreavus, at most taking chunk of damage from Hidden Power Fighting, and proceed to Pursuit Misdreavus. If you use a Rapid Spin user, a Diglett with Focus Sash is the most effective way of beating Stunky as it can't switch out. Pokemon like Machop can also take out Stunky relatively easily. A Psychic-type or fellow Ghost can lure in Stunky and attempt to KO it with Hidden Power Ground, giving Misdreavus a chance to plow through your opponent's team.

Nasty Plot gives Misdreavus an exceptional Special Attack stat of 36 which complements its perfect coverage. After a Nasty Plot, Misdreavus can OHKO many of its main counters and checks, including Munchlax.

There are a couple strategies you can use with this set. The first strategy involves utilizing immunities, Substitute, and Salac Berry. Misdreavus is immune to Ground-, Normal-, and Fighting-type attacks, meaning it will often have a chance to set up Substitute. Once Misdreavus has a Substitute up, it can boost its Special Attack with Nasty Plot. After this, Misdreavus can use Substitute until its Salac Berry is activated. This puts Misdreavus at a very respectable 28 Speed and 36 Special Attack, allowing it to sweep your opponent's team. This set is best saved until late game when Pokemon like Stunky and Munchlax are removed. Nasty Plot and Substitute can also be used with Life Orb to OHKO Munchlax most of the time.

This set can also use Shadow Sneak, taking advantage of the fact that it OHKOes a few frail revenge killers, and is a great utility move. Life Orb is recommended when using Shadow Sneak because of the KOes it ensures on Abra and Gastly. Life Orb also allows Misdreavus to OHKO Munchlax.

Colbur Berry is an option as well to avoid OHKOes from Sucker Punch users such as Stunky and Houndour. Thunderbolt is recommended with Colbur Berry, as it is the only attack that will OHKO both Stunky and Houndour after a single Nasty Plot. The main disadvantage of using Colbur Berry is that it allows a lot of other Pokemon to check Misdreavus, such as Choice Scarf Gastly, Munchlax, and Lickitung.

The Salac Berry set can only effectively pull off a sweep if priority users are removed, along with specially bulky Pokemon such as Munchlax and Stunky. Pokemon who often boost their Speed are great at luring out priority users, since it is often a team's only defense against said Speed-boosting Pokemon. Aron, Mantyke, and Chinchou lure out Croagunk, meaning that if they simply hit it on the switch with a powerful attack (that isn't Water-type), Croagunk will be unable to threaten them without taking itself out in the process. Diglett with Focus Sash or Substitute is also a good choice, as it removes Pokemon like Stunky and Munchlax with an Earthquake. It also removes common priority users such as Croagunk and Houndour. Pokemon like Gastly and Drifloon really help Misdreavus by luring in Munchlax and Stunky, as well. Once Munchlax or Stunky switch into Gastly or Drifloon, they can simply Explode, taking out the opponent's Misdreavus counter.

move 4: Substitute / Shadow Sneak
item: Oran Berry / Life Orb
ability: Levitate
nature: Timid / Naive

[SET COMMENTS]

Misdreavus is often thought of purely as a sweeper, so its bulk and support move pool is overlooked. Will-O-Wisp is one of the best utility moves in Little Cup, as it renders so many common switch-ins useless. The most notable targets that are beat after a Will-O-Wisp are Munchlax and Stunky, both of whom usually put a swift stop to Misdreavus. Pokemon who would normally switch into Will-O-Wisp are KOed easily by either Shadow Ball or Hidden Power Fighting.

Substitute and Shadow Sneak are both equally good attacks in the last slot. Substitute lets you stall out certain Pokemon's health, allowing you to KO them without activating their Oran Berry. It also helps ease prediction. Shadow Sneak is a great tool for stopping revenge killers and getting around Sucker Punch Croagunk.

The item choice is pretty simple; it depends on what you want Misdreavus to do. If you want it solely to lure and destroy physical Pokemon, Oran Berry is the way to go. With an Oran Berry, Misdreavus is far more durable and can burn more Pokemon before fainting. If you want it to function outside of that, Life Orb is recommended. With Life Orb, Misdreavus can utilize its natural Speed and Special Attack to sweep after weakening its own counters with Will-O-Wisp. Shadow Sneak is also rather weak without a Life Orb boost; it's needed to OHKO Gastly and Abra. Another option is to move your Special Attack EVs into HP, allowing Misdreavus to take various attacks such as Munchlax and Stunky Pursuit much better.

This Misdreavus set is a the key aspect to the infamous "Double Ghost" strategy. This strategy is quite simple; you send in Misdreavus to lure in the opponent's Ghost-type counter and burn it. After the opponent's Ghost-type counter is either fainted or weakened, you can easily sweep with a nother Ghost-type like Choice Scarf Gastly or SubPetaya Drifloon.

[Other Options]

Hidden Power Ground is a viable option over Hidden Power Fighting for the sole reason that it KOes Stunky after Stunky switches into Shadow Ball. However, this leaves Misdreavus painfully open to the ever-common Munchlax, Porygon, and Meowth, while also making it unable to hit Taillow. Thunderbolt is a great option on the Nasty Plot set, as it OHKOes Stunky after a Nasty Plot (even without a Life Orb boost). Thunderbolt still gives Misdreavus nearly perfect two-move coverage, and hits Normal-types much harder than Hidden Power Ground. Thunderbolt is also an option on the Shadow Sneak sets if you wish to have Shadow Sneak hit harder, as Thunderbolt doesn't require lower IVs. The biggest problem with using an attack other than Hidden Power Fighting is that you often lose to Munchlax, one of the most common Pokemon in the metagame.

A Choice Specs set would work decently well for Misdreavus with the use of Trick. It should be noted that Munchlax will still end up beating Misdreavus unless it's running Will-O-Wisp as well. Generally, being locked into a Ghost or Fighting attack is a bad plan, especially in Little Cup when so many things can take advantage of the immunities. Technically, Choice Scarf could be used as well, however Misdreavus is completely outclassed by Gastly. Gastly uses Choice Scarf much more effectively as it has the advantage of STAB Sludge Bomb, Explosion, Hypnosis, and a higher Special Attack stat.

A pure bulky set is definitely viable, considering Misdreavus has better defensive stats than many of the defensive Pokemon in Little Cup, when defenses are invested in of course. Misdreavus has a very neat support move pool including Taunt, Will-O-Wisp, and Thunder Wave.

[EVs]

At first glance, Misdreavus seems like it could come up with a relatively efficient EV spread since it should be able to maximize Speed and Special Attack with enough EVs leftover for a point in another stat. However, once you adjust Special Attack and Speed to make up for the lower IVs needed for Hidden Power Fighting, you lose that possibility. If you opt for Thunderbolt over Hidden Power Fighting on the Shadow Sneak set, feel free to invest the 36 extra EVs into Attack.

[Team Options]

Since Misdreavus is almost always sweeping, any Pokemon who can set up Stealth Rock is helpful. Pokemon such as Omanyte work especially well, due to luring Ground - and Fighting-type attacks for Misdreavus to switch into.

Misdreavus is one of the most deadly Pokemon after a single turn of set up, especially if it's behind a Substitute. Pokemon who lure out Fighting-, Normal-, or Ground-type attacks really benefit Misdreavus as they give it a chance to set up a Substitute. Munchlax in particular lures strong physical Ground-type attacks as well as Choiced Fighting-type attacks, meaning Misdreavus can simply switch in and start destroying the opponent's team. On the note of Munchlax, Misdreavus has trouble sweeping with bulky Pursuit users around. Misdreavus really benefits from anything that lures in and KOes Munchlax and Stunky, since it can sweep easily when they're gone. Gastly and Drifloon in particular are great at fulfilling this role. Gastly and Drifloon hit hard enough that the opponent will likely need to switch in their Ghost-counter, meaning that the Ghosts can just simply explode on their counters, clearing a path for Misdreavus. Ironically, Misdreavus can act as a Stunky or Munchlax lure for other Ghost-type Pokemon who need them gone to sweep, as it can cripple them with Will-O-Wisp, if not flat out beat them with good prediction.

Defensively, Misdreavus really needs something to deal with powerful Choice Scarf Pokemon. Choice Scarf Houndour in particular causes Misdreavus some trouble due to boasting a sky high Special Attack stat and packing a STAB Dark Pulse, while also resisting Shadow Sneak and being immune to Will-O-Wisp. Munchlax is a great teammate for Misdreavus, because it can easily switch into any of Choice Scarf Houndour's attacks, while also luring Fighting-types in for Misdreavus to switch back into.

[Opinion]

Misdreavus is one of the most dangerous Pokemon in the Little Cup metagame, and with good reason. Misdreavus has the rare triple immunity granted by Ghost-typing and Levitate. Unlike the other Ghosts, Misdreavus has the defenses, Speed, and offensive stats to make use of it without being essentially forced to run a Choice Scarf.

Misdreavus is terrifying from behind a Substitute, so terrifying that Choice Scarf Fighting-types think twice about using their STAB attack in fear of letting Misdreavus set up a Substitute. The reason Misdreavus is so terrifying behind a Substitute is that it can practically 1-2HKO the whole metagame. There is also the threat of Will-O-Wisp and Nasty Plot.

On the note of Nasty Plot and Will-O-Wisp, another one of Misdreavus's strong points is that it is so versatile. When Misdreavus comes onto the field, the opponent will have a very hard time picking a decent switch-in. If it switches in Munchlax, it could risk getting burned or getting beaten by a Nasty Plot Misdreavus. If they switch in Stunky, it could risk getting burned or beaten by an Oran Berry Misdreavus. If they switch in Pokemon like Houndour who resist Shadow Ball, it could very well end up switching into a Hidden Power Fighting. Other Pokemon simply can't switch in.

[Counters]

Misdreavus is a hard Pokemon to switch-into, but it does have a select few counters. The safest Pokemon to send in against Misdreavus is Stunky. Stunky beats every set with a bit of prediction, and most of the sets are simply just a matter of using Pursuit. Munchlax is also usually a great switch-in, beating every set except for the Will-O-Wisp ones. Munchlax need s to have maximum Special Defense and HP to survive a +2 Life Orb Hidden Power Fighting though.

Dratini doesn't mind switching into Will-O-Wisp and can survive an unboosted Shadow Ball while KOing back with Outrage. Taillow is also fine with switching into Will-O-Wisp, Substitute, and Shadow Ball, but it needs to be careful of Hidden Power Fighting. Houndour can work fine as well since it can trap Misdreavus with Pursuit, but it can't switch in on Substitute.
