Dratini (Analysis)

http://veekun.com/dex/pokemon/dratini
[Overview]

  • STAB Outrage and ExtremeSpeed make Dratini very dangerous.
  • Dragon Dance helps Dratini boost its Speed and Attack, making it very hard for any Pokemon to beat it, especially with ExtremeSpeed stopping most revenge killers.
  • Cute Dragon.

[SET]
name: Dragon Dance
move 1: Dragon Dance
move 2: Outrage
move 3: Waterfall / Fire Blast
move 4: ExtremeSpeed
item: Life Orb / Berry Juice
ability: Shed Skin
nature: Adamant / Naughty
evs: 244 Atk / 36 SpD / 196 Spe
ivs: 0 HP

Set Description:
  • After a Dragon Dance, Dratini is one of the most dangerous Pokemon in the metagame.
  • Outrage is for sweeping late-game.
  • Waterfall has great coverage with Outrage.
  • Fire Blast hits all Steel-types, namely Komatana, Bronzor, and Grass/Steel-types.
Additional Comments:
  • Berry Juice is an option, but set the IVs to 31.
Teammates and Counters:
  • If Dratini uses Waterfall, anything that resists Dragon- and Water-type attacks counters it, such as Grass/Steel-types.
  • Pokemon that don't take enough damage from ExtremeSpeed and outpace and OHKO Dratini can beat it, such as Magnemite, Gastly, and Misdreavus.
  • Faster Pokemon with priority generally work well, such as Sneasel and Scyther.
  • Magneton can trap Steels and KO the counters.
  • Wynaut gives Dratini chances to set up Dragon Dance.
  • Stealth Rock helps put many Pokemon in ExtremeSpeed range, so any Pokemon that can set it up would help Dratini.

[SET]
name: MixTini
move 1: Outrage / Draco Meteor
move 2: Fire Blast
move 3: Substitute / Draco Meteor
move 4: ExtremeSpeed
item: Life Orb
ability: Shed Skin
nature: Naughty
evs: 244 Atk / 116 SpA / 116 Spe
ivs: 0 HP

Set Description:
  • Dragon and Fire make for great attacking-types.
  • Without Outrage, Munchlax walks all over this set. However, Draco Meteor doesn't lock you in.
  • Fire Blast nails Bronzor and other steels.
  • ExtremeSpeed gives Dratini excellent utility as a revenge killer or late game cleaner.
  • Substitute allows Dratini to capitalize on switch-ins to DDtini counters. It beats them behind a Substitute.
Additional Comments:
  • If you're feeling lucky, you can use Dragon Rush.
  • Ice Beam or Surf can be used to beat Gligar, however Dratini generally doesn't lure in Gligar.
Teammates Counters:
  • Nearly impossible to switch into, but it's hard to set up a Substitute.
  • Faster Pokemon with priority beat it as well.
  • Wynaut, again, helps Dratini set up.
  • Pokemon who lure Choice Scarf Thunderbolts, Surfs, and Flamethrowers make Dratini very dangerous since it can switch in and set up on them.
[Team Options]

  • Magnemite deals with Steels quite effectively for the DD set.
  • Wynaut provides free turns for Dratini to set up, and also traps Bronzor.
  • Bronzor helps by setting up Stealth Rock and Screens.
  • MixTini breaks walls for Pokemon like Bagon and Kibago.
[Optional Changes]

  • A Scarf set could be useful, but Dratini is slightly to weak and slow with Scyther and Sneasel in the metagame.
  • A Choice Band set could be useful as well, but ExtremeSpeed is a bad attack to be locked into.
  • Specs is too weak.
[Counters]
  • If Dratini uses Waterfall, anything that resists Dragon- and Water-type attacks counters it, such as Grass/Steel-types.
  • Pokemon that don't take enough damage from ExtremeSpeed and outpace and OHKO Dratini can beat it, such as Magnemite, Gastly, and Misdreavus.
  • Faster Pokemon with priority generally work well, such as Sneasel and Scyther.

[Dream World]

  • Marvel Scale is a great ability. It gives Dratini the ability to run an impressive Rest + Sleep Talk set with Dragon Dance and Outrage.

Dragon Tail seems like a move which could have some potential especially for using on switches, though it's probably OC material.

I was considering putting it on the Mixed Set but I felt it was kind of a waste. What set would you use it on?

In what scenario would it be useful over Substitute? If you really think it has use, I'll put it on, but I don't see a reason to put it on.

hm, the uses are fairly few. But if the opponent switches to something you can't beat with a sub up then it'd be handy, though only like Berry Juice Bronzor/Aron or Scarf Magnemite then you'd get a free light hit and entry hazard damage on both their switch and the new Pokemon. Maybe not enough for an OC mention, but those Pokemon are some of those that will try switching into you most often.
