Exploud

¯\_( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)_/¯ dank meme crew
[OVERVIEW]

Exploud has access to Boomburst, and along with its great coverage moves, it can deal hefty damage to much of the tier. Exploud excels against slower defensive teams, but it is not too hard for offense to scare it out due to its bad defenses and Speed. Exploud also has limited opportunities to attack, as it is not easy to get in the battlefield. Although Exploud is too slow to sweep, it is still extremely good at wallbreaking. Boomburst in conjunction with Scrappy is extremely spammable and can even bypass Substitute.

[SET]
name: Choice Specs
move 1: Boomburst

move 3: Focus Blast
move 4: Surf / Sleep Talk
item: Choice Specs
ability: Scrappy
nature: Modest
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Boomburst hits extremely hard and can even hit through Substitute. Fire Blast hits Steel-types that are designated to sponge Boomburst, which include Escavalier and Mega Steelix. Focus Blast can target Rock-types such as Rhyperior and Cradily, whereas Surf can be used to KO Rhyperior in one shot. Sleep Talk can also be used in order to absorb sleep for the team.

Set Details
========

Scrappy is the preferred ability, as it allows Exploud to hit Ghost-types with Boomburst. Choice Specs makes Exploud hit harder, and as Exploud will mainly be spamming Boomburst, it does not mind being locked into the move. Maximum Special Attack EVs and a Modest nature make Exploud hit as hard as possible, although a Timid nature is an option to outspeed threats such as Adamant Tyrantrum. Maximum Speed EVs let Exploud outspeed some threats such as uninvested Xatu.

Usage Tips
========

Exploud has bad bulk, so it should be brought in after a teammate has fainted or on a double switch. It is also a good idea to bring Exploud in through the use of Volt Switch or U-turn, although you should be careful if this means Exploud has to take a hit. Exploud should be played as a hit-and-run attacker, as it is easy to revenge kill. That being said, the main move Exploud should be using is still Boomburst. Because Exploud has limited opportunities to attack, try to hit switch-ins such as Bronzong and Cradily with the appropriate coverage move.

Team Options
========

Fast sweepers such as Fletchinder and Jolteon appreciate how Exploud can break down walls for them. Fletchinder can also lure in and weaken Steel-types for Exploud. Dugtrio makes for a good partner, as it can trap and KO Registeel, while it also can bring Exploud in safely with Memento. Volt Switch and U-turn users such as Eelektross, Rotom-C, and Meloetta can bring Exploud in for free. Other options for teammates include Sticky Web users such as Kricketune to help Exploud with its bad Speed. Baton Pass users such as Combusken and Substitute Durant are viable teammates as well.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
########

A Choice Scarf is an option over Choice Specs, as Exploud outspeeds Dugtrio and Choice Scarf Emboar with it. Soundproof can be used, as it allows Exploud to switch into other Exploud and Meloetta, and it can also be used with a Choice Scarf to surprise the latter two. However, without Scrappy, Exploud will have problems with most Ghost-types. Shadow Ball is an option if using Soundproof in order to hit Jellicent, which would otherwise wall Exploud. Taunt can be used to prevent walls from recovering, but Exploud would rather have more coverage. Work Up is a decent option when combined with a boosting item such as Silk Scarf or Life Orb, as it helps Exploud work around teams trying to pivot around it while assuming it is Choice-locked.

Checks & Counters
########

**Steel- and Rock-types**: Most Steel- and Rock-types can take a Boomburst; for example, Rhyperior can take it and hit back hard with Earthquake, Cobalion can take a hit and OHKO back, and Escavalier can trap Exploud with Pursuit.

**Fighting-types**: While they have problems coming in on Boomburst, almost all Fighting-types, such as Hitmonlee, Sawk, and Cobalion can force Exploud out.

**Faster Threats**: Some faster threats such as Choice Scarf Emboar and Delphox can take advantage of Exploud being Choice-locked into the wrong move to switch in and force it out.

**Assault Vest**: Assault Vest on many Pokemon, such as Meloetta, can make the difference between an OHKO and 2HKO, and their users can hit Exploud back hard.

I really don't like Flamethrower, Substitute, Sleep Talk, and Life Orb slashes. I feel like you could do with removing all of them, and making this the set:

Boomburst
########
name: Boomburst
move 1: Boomburst
move 2: Fire Blast
move 3: Surf
move 4: Focus Blast
ability: Scrappy
item: Choice Specs
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
nature: Modest

make other changes to set details etc accordingly

And mention Flamethrower being a weaker but more reliable option in moves. I don't know what other QC members think though, but I feel like Focus Blast is useful as it eases prediction when say, opponent has Doublade + Rhyperior and/or a Steel-type, and you want a way to hit all 3 of them, Focus Blast would be the go-to option, especially against Doublade where it can't miss anyway. I acknowledge the bad accuracy tho

Mention the good coverage moves in overview; although it'll be clicking Boomburst 90% of the time anyway lol. And speaking of Boomburst, no where in the analysis is it mentioned that it bypasses Substitute so put that somewhere (Overview and moves I guess). Also in Overview when mentioning bad speed mentions usually it mostly does a lot better against defensive builds than offensive builds because of the bad speed and the fact that a lot of Pokemon on offense can scare it out with hard hits, and that it struggles to do much.

Mention Work Up + Substitute (and Sub on its own, as well as sleep talk /i guess/) in OO, along with Life Orb and why Specs is better (it'll be spamming boomburst 90% of the time and recoil is bad) Also add a line explaining why Soundproof should never be used.

Put Faster Threats in C&C and beef it up; give examples of the rock- and steel-types.

I think scarf sets are worth running, more so than life orb for sure. 387 speed is pretty solid, you outrun scarf emboar and dugtrio. Also +1 adamant feraligatr.

Timid is good, it deserves to be slashed.

Soundproof exploud is neat for switching into enemy exploud, and somewhat useful for switching into enemy heliolisk and meloetta. Saying Scrappy is a must is misleading, you nuke Doublade with Fire Blast/Shadow Ball and Jellicent is still an issue but you have Sball at least.

If you're a baller you can switch scarf soundproof exploud in on heliolisk hyper voice and use one of

252 SpA Exploud Boomburst vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Heliolisk: 189-223 (71.3 - 84.1%)
252 SpA Exploud Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Heliolisk: 216-256 (81.5 - 96.6%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

to take it out.

I like sleep talk, keep it slashed.

Include dugtrio in checks & counters.

Include Cresselia in checks & counters, you can set up cms against it and force it out with some sdef investment. And speed investment.

Include assault vest in checks & counters, random assault vests means pokemon aren't ohkoed/2hkoed by boomburst and they can actually hit back. Shit like avest meloetta is great for exploud.

Slash Focus Blast under surf, they both hit rock types and running both can be redundant. Shadow Ball is cool for Doublade (ghost immune makes you able to switch in/revenge kill) and should get a slash.

Idk if including that it likes webs is a good idea since webs users are aids and it doesn't need em.

Include good volt switch users in team options instead of braviary.

Include Doublade in team options because Exploud forces lix, rhyperior, etc to take Boombursts and Doublade likes those pokemon dead, and Doublade can switch into cresselia and some fighting types (cobalion, predicted lee hjk, etc).

o.k

i'd downplay the significance of hitting cradily / 'tops with focus blast, mentioning it for being a decent 'check-all' kind of move (hits m-lix, while not giving up free turns to alomomola as readily, that sorta thing) first and fore-most. plus, av 'tops retains less and less value with each passing suspect, and non-av is not a boomburst switch-in haha. hits those two is an ok plus, but by no means a highlight.

mention specifically adamant tryantrum when presenting the option of timid nature, it's a really big deal. i'd likely omit the mr.mime, as well as probably bouffalant points when addressing soundproof here, they hardly seem worth that mention. really downplay webs / bp mentions, as they are by far the most niche in application, and i wouldn't want to imply that they are by any means essential to exploud. as a whole, this analysis should be reflecting that exploud should be wall-breaking, and the bp mentions in particular might suggest it is to be utilized as a cleaner of sorts. were you to mention bp, i'd do so with a more aggressive bp user, such as subpass durant (which can commonly allow exploud in for free, behind a sub, on an alomomola, qwilfish, etc. to throw out a free boomburst or two), which seems more contextually relevant. spinner mentions seem very unnecessary here, as exploud is no more weak to them than any other grounded 'mon, and it doesn't concede layers to common spikers any way (until ferro rises in usage, which it may well do for a short while due to gatr).

give work up a bit more acknowledgement in oo. yeah, specs is very often more valued in games, but a ton of fat teams will rely on methods like 'pivot regen 'mon on initial attack, then go normal resist if it boombursts' as to limit exploud's impact when it comes in, and against such builds, working up into that initial switch can seal a game then and there. i ended up running silk scarf to test this set, largely b.c i disliked showing lo recoil, but i imagine that it would work fairly well either which way. icy wind sounds like it has absolutely 0 value, i'd just remove it altogether haha

escavalier needs mention in c&c, given it eats all but fire coverage, and it can at least pursuit for an o.k 40-50% as it goes out, which is alright for restricting its free turns at least (consider it as coming in @ 25-35% next time, provided sr was up both times it comes in). dugtrio should be immediately after rocks and steels, since (after saccing a thing), it comes in and rk's cleanly after a little chip (from ~75% from cb, 65% from lo).

1/3

edit: also mention nails' stuff. i think sleep talk is garbo on this 'mon, but w.e, i guess there's worse stuff to have pocketing sleep

Remove Soundproof slash (put it in OO and mention the extremely specific niche it serves and why you should be using Scrappy over it; too many situations where the best thing to do is click Boomburst but opp has a ghost-type, etc)

When mentioning Fletch mention it lures and weakens steel-types for exploud

Rotom-C as a volt switch users

3/3

edit: theres a feraligatr mention somewhere, remove it.

edit 2: remove choice scarf from set details; put it in OO.

edit 3: i also dislike timid a lot; i'm in favour of deslashing it and just mentioning it in set details.

Moves
========

Boomburst is the main move Exploud will be spamming, as it (avoid "main move" stuff) hits extremely hard and even can hit through Substitute. Fire Blast hits Steel-types and Soundproof Abomasnow, which is immune to Boomburst, super effectively (well I mean Boomburst hits them too, so you should specify this imo). Flamethrower is another option, as it cleanly OHKOes (has "es" if it's a verb; think "goes" or "does") Abomasnow anyway and has perfect accuracy. However, the different difference in power is noticeable against targets such as Registeel. Surf hits Rock-types such as Rhyperior and Regirock super effectively, and Focus Blast rounds out the coverage, (comma) as it hits Cradily and Kabutops while it also acts acting as a decent check-all move against threats such as Mega Steelix. Sleep Talk can also be used in order to absorb sleep for the team.

In return, Exploud can weaken Mega Steelix and Rhyperior, (comma) which threaten Doublade.
