Feraligatr (Swords Dance)

This has actually been uploaded quite some time ago and I thought it got moved. Once the tabs are actually put in place I can certainly add in the other sections.

EDIT: Apparently it got removed, WTF?? Okay, I'll add the other sections then..

EDIT2: It would seem as though the recent UU update of Feraligatr removed the OU set, despite the OP saying it would remain the same. I don't know what went wrong there.

My guess is that since this was uploaded without containing the OU [Overview, TO and OC] sections then it had to be removed from the site when the UU update took place. So, MetaNite, can you write said sections in order to get this finally done? Thanks.

Not like OC should be strictly enforced for this case, though I've talked to C_M about it and we would like to see the Counters section listed as well, and not only the Overview and Team Options.

Okay, I'll take a good look and stab at the extra OU sections since Feraligatr gave me some great experiences when I played with it on Shoddy. Here it goes:

OU

For years Feraligatr has been unable to fit in a metagame where Gyarados dominated. In the 4th generation, it still struggles to make it on a competitive team due to it lacking any outstanding stats compared to Gyarados in OU. Feraligatr separates itself from Gyarados, however, with a neutrality to Stealth Rock and access to Swords Dance. While it lacks the raw power Gyarados wields, it makes up for it by doubling its Attack twice as fast.

OU

Entry hazards of all kinds are most welcomed. Feraligatr has trouble with offensive Suicune and as such, Toxic Spikes are helpful for wearing it down quickly. They are also useful because they force Celebi to use Recover or switch out sooner than they'd like, only racking up more Stealth Rock and possibly even Spikes damage. Forretress and Roserade are two of the best Spikes users in OU; the former being great for also spinning away Stealth Rock and enemy Spikes while the latter instantly absorbing Toxic Spikes upon entry and checking bulky Water-types. Calm Mind Jirachi with Wish is incredibly helpful as it can keep Feraligatr healthy and give it opportunities to switch in on resisted Fire-type attacks. With Calm Mind and Thunderbolt, it also has a good chance to beat Calm Mind Suicune one on one. Infernape is a great offensive partner alongside Feraligatr, as it can weaken Water-types with Close Combat and U-turn to a counter making it easier for Feraligatr to sweep. The same can work in reverse, as Feraligatr can weaken Water-types with Return so Swords Dance or Nasty Plot Infernape can sweep with ease.

OU

Feraligatr has a few additional moves that weren't mentioned. Earthquake can be useful for hitting Metagross and Jirachi super effectively, but otherwise has inferior coverage to which Waterfall and Return provides. Feraligatr learns Dragon Dance, although that is better left to Gyarados who boasts higher Attack and Speed, save having a weakness to Stealth Rock.

OU

Most of the Pokemon that counter Dragon Dance Gyarados check Feraligatr as well. If Rotom-A is given enough Speed to be faster than Feraligatr, it can survive an Aqua Jet and kill it with Thunderbolt. Slower ones (Hm...not sure what to say here. You need a Life Orb and Aqua tail to at least have a chance of an OHKO on Defensive Rotom-A, and Offensive ones run Timid) need to beware however, as a +2 Aqua Tail may OHKO after Stealth Rock. Scarf Rotom-A is a great revenge killer. (Redundant) Zapdos is a similar boat as Rotom-A; if you outspeed it you may possibly win, but if not, you risk being crippled or OHKO'd (Typo?). Vaporeon can counter Feraligatr if it has Toxic or Roar but will be taking a lot of damage from a boosted Return. RestTalk Gyarados is also a great counter thanks to Intimidate. Shaymin and Celebi also counter Feraligatr well, but both shouldn't risk using Leech Seed or Thunder Wave as Feraligatr can 2HKO with Return.

This works great IMO on recent ladders. It has a good bit of surprise factor as well when it comes to it's ability to bust through so many pokes. My first SD set was a bit different from this one, but after looking at yours it is far more superior. Thanks again for this write up!

[SET COMMENTS]

Feraligatr has always been in Gyarados's shadow in the OU environment, but Feraligatr has Swords Dance, however, it can to boost its Attack twice as fast as Gyarados and utilize Aqua Jet to damage faster foes to differentiate itself from Gyarados. Feraligatr easily OHKOes defensive Rotom-A is easily 2HKOed, who has next to no chance of OHKOing you back with Thunderbolt, even after Stealth Rock. (beware of sandstorm and other residual damage, however). If Rotom-A tries to burn Feraligatr with Will-O-Wisp, it has Lum Berry to remedy the status. Return complements Feraligatr's Water-type STAB, hitting every Pokemon in the OU metagame for neutral damage, bar Empoleon. Vaporeon and Suicune cannot do enough damage to you before being forced to recover. Vaporeon is likely to be 2HKOed by Return, while defensive Suicune is 3HKOed. An unboosted Hidden Power Electric from either of them is only a 3HKO, allowing Feraligatr to get another Swords Dance under its belt. Aqua Jet is Feraligatr's weapon against faster Pokemon, such as Heatran, Gengar, Jolteon, and Choice Scarf Tyranitar; however, you need residual damage to guarantee an OHKOs on said Pokemon.

Because of Feraligatr's pure Water-typing, Electric-type attacks do not completely mutilate it like they do, unlike Gyarados. Also, common revenge killers such as Choice Scarf Jirachi cannot OHKO Feraligatr. Life Orb Starmie also doesn't OHKO Feraligatr with Thunderbolt; it needs Stealth Rock to have a chance. Another big selling point is Torrent. With a good amount of bulk, many attacks can't do enough damage to Feraligatr to OHKO it, leaving Feraligatr with 33% or less HP (which will activate Torrent). When attempting to activate Torrent, be aware of how much residual damage Feraligatr has taken, and be sure it can finish off whatever faster Pokemon it needs to with Aqua Jet. Many attacks will conveniently activate Torrent after Stealth Rock damage.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Aqua Tail is a very viable alternative to Waterfall.; with it, Feraligatr can Its main advantage is the possibility to OHKO Rotom-A after Stealth Rock damage, and the ability to 2HKO Skarmory. If you use Aqua Tail, you trade perfect accuracy and the possibility of a flinch for more power. Lum Berry is a good item, but it won't always help your sweep. Mystic Water is a good alternative if you'd like a slightly smaller power boost for Feraligatr's STAB moves without the recoil of Life Orb. Life Orb gives you a lot of extra power, but sacrifices Feraligatr's bulk. A Jolly nature allows Feraligatr to outpace Naive Heatran, Adamant Lucario, and Adamant Gyarados. An Adamant nature is perfectly viable, however, as Feraligatr could use the slight boost in power against bulky Water-types. There is no need to max Speed with an Adamant nature, as Feraligatr is usually naturally faster or naturally slower than the Pokemon in its Speed tier. Pokemon such as Skarmory, Metagross, and Breloom rarely maximize their Speed, so Feraligatr only needs enough to beat defensive Rotom-A.

Entry hazards are extremely helpful for Feraligatr, as they guarantee some KOs, especially those with Aqua Jet. With a layer or two of Spikes intact, Aqua Jet will have no problem OHKOing Heatran and Mamoswine after a Swords Dance. Skarmory and Forretress are recommended as partners for Feraligatr, as they are regarded as the best Spikers in OU. Skarmory counters Swampert, Metagross, and Scizor without a problem; however, it shares an Electric-type weakness with Feraligatr. Forretress, while setting up Spikes, can also set up Toxic Spikes which will to deter Celebi and Vaporeon, who can cause problems for Feraligatr. A Pursuit user will be extremely helpful, as Starmie is a big threat to Feraligatr because it is faster, and can survive a +2 Aqua Jet, and potentially KOes with Thunderbolt. Tyranitar brings in an unwanted sandstorm, but if you don't mind that, Tyranitar is a great choice. since it Tyranitar can also counter troublesome Zapdos and Rotom-A. Scizor is a decent check to Gengar and Starmie, and helps wound enemy walls with U-turn. Gliscor can set up Stealth Rock, counter Lucario, and even lure in Pokemon whom Feraligatr can set up on, such as Gyarados, Suicune, and Vaporeon, who oftentimes cannot do significant damage to the crocodilian. If Gliscor uses U-turn as they switch in, you can get Feraligatr in completely unharmed and proceed to set up.

Feraligatr can work well as a lure for defensive Pokemon so other sweepers have an easier time sweeping. Gyarados often has trouble with Rotom-A, Suicune, and Vaporeon, but if you can weaken them with Feraligatr, it can finish off the enemy team. A Pursuit user will be all but necessary to avoid prevent both sweepers from succumbing to revenge killers. A Choice Scarf Flygon would be most helpful, absorbing Thunderbolts and checking Dragon Dance Dragonite. Heatran can be used as an additional lure, further weakening Water-type switch-ins with Hidden Power Grass and checking Jirachi rather nicely.

OU

Entry hazards of all kinds are most welcome. Since Feraligatr has trouble with offensive Suicune and as such, Toxic Spikes are helpful for wearing it down quickly. Forretress and Roserade are two of the best Spikes users in OU; the former is also great for also spinning away Stealth Rock and enemy Spikes entry hazards while the latter instantly absorbs Toxic Spikes upon entry and checks bulky Water-types. Infernape is a great offensive partner alongside Feraligatr, as it can weaken Water-types with Close Combat and U-turn to a counter, making it easier for Feraligatr to sweep. good writeup, just remember that "you" refers to the battler not the Pokemon.

Return complements Feraligatr's Water-type STAB, hitting every Pokemon in the OU metagame for neutral damage, bar barring Empoleon.
Furthermore, Vaporeon and Suicune cannot do enough damage to you Feraligatr before being forced to recover.
Felt that furthermore led to a smoother transition from the previous sentence, to this one.

Because of Feraligatr's pure Water-typing, Electric-type attacks do not completely mutilate it like they do to Gyarados.
However, if you use Aqua Tail, you trade perfect accuracy and the possibility of a flinch for more power.
Again, I felt that however would be create a better transition.

Tyranitar is a great choice. since it can also counter the troublesome Zapdos and Rotom-A.
but otherwise has inferior coverage compared to Waterfall + Return.
Just briefly went over uragg's GP (Because I'm also interested in Feraligatr's moveset). Good write up.

uragg's check still has not been implemented yet and it has been nearly half a month since then. Is this still being worked on?

This is fully written already, so don't change or rewrite anything. Rather, focus on finishing up where MN left off and taking the GP checks as they come. Thanks!

A well-written analysis. Just be aware that some issues seem to have popped up while you were implementing uragg's check, make sure that this doesn't happen this time.

@Fatecrashers

Thanks. I just want to double-check though. Isn't this phrase, "While it lacks the raw power Gyarados that wields," supposed to have the "that" before "Gyarados"?
