Arena: Nowhere in Particular

The hot stench of the metropolis suffocates all newcomers. The streets bustle with activity: businessmen scurry, children yell, and the homeless beg. The hustle-and-bustle city is tireless; it is clockwork. Everyone lives within their own microcosm, content to keep their head down and live another day.

Rather, most are content. There are those who know how to escape. They yearn for something greater, something primal. They gather at a pub down by Main Street and 10th called The Antidote. No, they're not there for the tempting booze or the allure of getting laid. They come to fight. A man with a missing eye and ripping biceps guards the back doorway which presumably leads to the basement. He spits on the ground and address you firmly.

"Oi, where you off to?" he grumbles.

"Nowhere in Particular," you reply candidly.

The man gives a knowing nod and steps out of the way. It worked!

Down and down the concrete stairs go. They lead you into a cavernous underground room. The basement: Nowhere in Particular. Its floor is cold pavement and its brick walls are unforgiving. Metal folding chairs, wobbly card tables, and other materials litter the room. But none of that matters; what catches your eye is the middle of the room. Underneath the flickering fluorescent lights is a battle. A formidable Fighting-type Pokemon slams an unsuspecting foe into the floor with a deafening thud. Its trainer sticks a fist pump of pride into the cool air, as the basement reverberates back to silence.

"Nice fight," calls a blond-haired figure with green pants, sitting backwards in a chair. "But I believe our training is over... We have a visitor."

They both turn towards you. A lithe young woman with short pink hair grunts and stamps her foot into the ground. "LET'S DO THIS."

The blond makes a motion to stop her. "Easy there, Maylene." He approaches you and offers a firm handshake. "Hi there, I'm Birkal!" he says, brimming with enthusiasm. "Welcome to Nowhere in Particular. Or more formally, welcome to Fight Gym. Let me give you a quick rundown on the rules here."

"Rule Number One: You do not talk about Fight Gym."

"Rule Number Two: Each Pokemon battles for the knock out. Here at Fight Gym, if a damaging combination brings its opponent's HP to zero and scores a KO, that move has no cooldown. Passive damage from combinations will not work; the combination must KO outright with damage output alone. Go nuts."

"Rule Number Three: All Fighting-type Pokemon can equip Expert Belt or Black Belt on top of their held item. They've trained hard enough that they've earned their stripes."

"Rule Number Four: This one's a flurry of minor rules, so stick with me here. All Special Attacks cost two more energy. Our low ceiling prevents Bounce, Sky Drop, and Fly from being used entirely. Fire-types and Dark-types have a flat 10% accuracy boost due to the darkness. Vacuum Wave and Mach Punch receive a +1 priority boost. And finally, Hidden Power is a physical-type move down here."

"Think you can handle all that?" Birkal asks with a smile. "Let me know if you have any questions."

"UGH, SHUT UP," Maylene shouts angrily. A small crowd emerges from the shadows; their interest is piqued. "ENOUGH CHAT. LET'S GET THIS FIGHT STARTED."

Hello people and welcome to the grand opening of the Fight Gym!

...if you dare to call this place a gym.

Anyway

This is the first battle of the gym leader Birkal Maylene, facing a fierce opponent to boot! Let's get into it!

Our Leader is a tiny brat with a short temper and a strong willing to kick stuff. Oh and the blonde dude next to her is Birkal. Birkal is an admin (or super mod or whatever it is called) that dared ruin his reputation by joining the ASB haha. I kid. Anyway. He entered with the set goal of becoming the Fighting Gym leader, getting nothing but Fighting mons (and rotom) until that happened. Which means that he probably knows how to deal with fight mons and mons that scare them. Or else, dude what the hell have you been doing the past months?

Pay close attention to Lucario the Lucario (no love here...). If you have checked the teams (and you shouldn't since that means that you skipped this >:( ) you will see that the challenger brought a very tough set of mons. All of them counter one or two of the Leaders mons, so no mon really has a advantage. Lucario may be the a-mon since the Steel typing and MegaEvo may make it good against Aromatisse and Swoobat, pokemon that otherwise give hell to fighting mons.

The Challenger is the best player on this badge game. Sporting 7 badges, all on fierce battles against gym leaders (and against the creator haha), Its_A_Random is a terrific challenger, with a team wide enough to play different strategies and different roles, striking at any type of weak point. But makes him awesome vs gyms.

Pay special attention to Aromatisse the Aromatisse (no love here too...). Thanks to Fairy Typing and Psychic coverage, Aromatisse is capable of inflicting much pain to 6/7 of the Leader's team. The challenger needs only to handle Lucario to have the proverbial Field Day here.

Now let's check the teams!

If there are Double Team clones up when you would attack AND Revenankh has not used Telekinesis (Self), use Earthquake that action. Push back actions.

Round 1!

And now we shall begin the first match of this dump Gym!

Both players send out their respective Revenankh! I suspect this will be a common move here on later challenges as well.

The Leader opts with a varied set of items, with Mental Herb and Expert Belt, while the Challenger prefers the offensive approach with double Expert Belt. To be honest I am not sure what the Mental Herb is for, as Revenankh doesn't strike me as a support mon, but on well.

The round starts in an offensive manner, so Pharant has the advantage. Both mummies trade attacks and the challenger gets a good advantage here, thanks to higher BAP and the offensive itemset.

On the following action, Pharant protects itself against Dambe's Knock Off. Nothin much to see here. And then Round 1 is repeated for the joys of those who like deja vu (hint: not me).

And with this the match is almost even, with the challenger getting a small advantage.

But due to the nature of this arena, the leader has the opportunity to change the tides quite easily. Will he take it? Will the challenger let him? We will see soon enough.

DATA:

"Alright now... Continue!"

Shadow Sneak > Phantom Force > Shadow Sneak
IF
Bide is used A1, THEN use Chill A1, AND use Moonlight A2.
IF Torment is issued A1/A2, AND you are not Taunted when you act A2, THEN use Moonlight A2.

Round 2!

Since you will skip this to go to the results, I will be brief here.

It seems that the challenger didn't get the offensive spirit of this gym and opted for a conservative approach.

Unfortunately, the Leader got the spirit of this. That little brat probably IS the embodiment of that spirit.

End result? Dambe defeated Pharant with a crushing combo and the leader draws first blood! 3-2!

Which doesn't mean that he is winning. Weird huh?

I will spare the lesson why. Just analyse both teams and you will see that a fallen Revenankh for the leader is way worse than for the challenger. But with 4hp Dambe is as good as gone.

This battle relies on how the leader will take advantage of momentum and turn advantage. Let us watch.

DATA:

ACTION 1!

Pharant used Shadow Sneak! (-3en)
Crit: 15 (no)
Damage: (4+2+2+3+1.5)*1.5= 18.75hp

Dambe used Pain Split! (-15.91en)
Both evened at (58+(47-18.75))/2=43.125hp

ACTION 2!

Dambe used Trick! (-7en)
Expert Belt -> Mental Herb

Pharant fades out!

Pharant used Phantom Force! (-9en)
Crit: 10 (no)
Damage: (9+3+2+1.5)*1.5= 23.25hp

ACTION 3!

Pharant used Shadow Sneak! (-3en)
Crit: 10 (no)
Damage: (4+3+2+1.5)*1.5= 15.75hp

Dambe used Phantom Force + Phantom Force! (-41en)
Crit: 4 (no)
Damage: (9*2.25+2+2+3+1.5)*1.5= 43.125hp

Pharant fainted!

"NOICE. GO IN FOR MORE."

Endure | Pain Split | Pain Split

If Garchomp is in the evasive stage of Dig, use Earthquake that action. Push back actions.
If successful protective / evasive move on A2 or A3, use Chill that action. Push back actions.

IF
I am a dumb & you can indeed use Pain Split properly under Endure despite not having enough energy, THEN make an illegal sub change your action-set to [Mega Evolve] Sand Tomb > Sand Tomb > Sand Tomb

The description of Endure in NDA is a bit poorly worded; makes it sound like energy cost must be accounted for in combination attacks only. In hindsight, the ruling makes sense. Error on my part. Also, Revenankh is at 8 EN.

"Hrmph. Stupid rules. Take back the momentum, Gallade."

Round 4!

Showing to be a quick learner, the leader takes out a page from the Psychic Leader's book and had Gallade use Telekinesis to escape from seismic attacks. Unfortunately for her, Choragon managed to get an Earthquake in just before that happened.

Still, it proved to be a great choice, as Gallade evaded Garchomp's two other attacks, while destroying the sub and getting some hp back with Drain Punch and then dealing damage with slowing Garchomp down with Icy Wind.

This is not being the walk in the park a lot of us expected, that is for sure. It is still too early to say anything and we have yet to see the role Stealth Rock will have on this match or how well the Leader uses her own Mega Mons, so a lot can happen!

fun fun fuuuun!!

Round 5!

The unloved Gallade and Choragon the Garchomp continue to trade blows, with the former using ice moves and the latter using sheer power. Thanks to Rough Skin, it is almost an even match.

In the middle of the round, however, the Challenger uses his trademark strategies and orders Garchomp to Roar and phaze Gallade out. In those times, having a big pool of mons to work with is actually a disadvantage, as Roar may bring out a not-so-good mon for the occasion.

After a ferocious Aerial Ace, unloved Gallade returns to the pokeball and Wen-Do the Conkeldurr is sent out. Wen-Do is probably better than Gallade at the whole ice punch business, but Garchomp is good as gone and the challenger's other two mons have the advantage against Miss Conkeldurr here. Or at least in theory.

Did the leader draw the short stick? Or will she be able to make it happen with skills and all caps? Let's see how this pans out.
