Hi, maybe you remember my first warstory (I'm singing in the rain ♪) where I showed you a decent battle (not the best probably) featuring my "anti-rain stall" team. Like I said then, it's hard to come up with good batte logs due to either rage quits or just boring sweeps (I've been swept pretty badly with CM Manaphy). But in an effort to advertise for the Ubers tier, I saved this log as I think this battle is better in terms of prediction and decisions. Hope you guys enjoy it.

    Team Preview:

    Patt's team:

    [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

I'm using the same team as before: Gastrodon to keep offensive Kyogre at bay, Deoxys-A and Dialga take care of defensive versions. Xatu walls Ferrothorn all day long and Skarm walls all Extremekiller Arceus. That pretty much eliminates the usual rain stall core. Key here -as it is in other tiers as well- is entry hazards control. Notice I don't have a spinner so I rely on Xatu to stop hazards being set up. The problem I have is that besides Deoxys-A I don't really have a sweeper on this team. My dragons are bulky so they get outspeed by almost everything.

Remember that team preview doesn't really tell you which Arceus your opponent is using so I don't know that until he enters battle. Physical versions (Normal, Ghost, Ground) are usually no problem for Skarmory but CM version are problematic depending on the version (Ghost and Water being the most problematic).

I decide to lead with Dialga as usual as I want SR up as soon as possible.

Favorable match up for me, I can either set up SR or go for the SE attack on Kyogre. Most likely he is going to switch to Ferrothorn but since I actually want that (Xatu free switch in) I'll just go with Thunder. I don't like overpredicting early in the match plus you don't know if it is a Twave lead or a Specs Modest Ogre (can 2HKO with Water Spout).

Support Dialga or BU Dialga? It’s too early for BU Dialga to show up so I assume it’s support version and he’ll most likely set up rocks. Go Xatu!

    [IMG]100% [IMG]95% (SR)

Now that SR got bounced I’m thinking he will either attack or switch. Xatu doesn’t really threat Dialga so he’ll probably attack. Lefties makes me think he doesn’t have Draco Meteor (probably Dragon Pulse which isn’t that scary) and that its other move is Thunder (is either Thunder or Fireblast but since it is a rain team I expect the Thunder). I send in my Electric switch hoping to force some switches.

Just as I thought. Now, I want to get some damage on this Dialga as Deoxys-A fails to OHKO bulky Dialgas from my experience (does around 85-95 depending on the EV spread). I don’t wanna play a prediction game with Xatu (in case he goes for SR again) because he is my best answer to Ferrothorn. If he attacks I can always Recover off the damage (I need Gastrodon above 60% to fully counter Kyogre and Ice Beam).

Ok, he went for rocks. Like I said at the beginning, hazard control is important and now that we both have SR up, I need Spikes so that I get the switch advantage. I could EQ again but he won’t risk Dialga knowing he can’t touch my Gastro. Let’s start racking up SR damage.

Even without Reflect I can wall Ferro all day. I was going to set up reflect again but went with Roost instead. So far, the match is going OK; I need to know which Arceus I’m facing and also I need to get a switch in for Deoxys-A as he creates a lot of switches and can bait Extremekiller versions in (free switch for Skarm/spikes set up).

Xatu has helped me a lot this match already but the Kyogre switch in is odd because Ice Beam doesn’t 3HKO Gastro and the whole Gastro-Ferro-Xatu switch doesn’t particularly favor him (if anything Kyogre is just losing HP). Once again my slug goes in to take the splash.

Not to minimize the hax but Gastro has sponged DMs from offensive versions before. At 100%, he wouldn’t had been 2HKO by Dialga and he can Recover. On other side, he did have DM (I thought it was Dpulse/Thunder/SR/Fireblast). I’ll attack this turn in case he decides to go for DM again.

    (Xatu 55%)

Maybe he just wanted some SR damage on my other pokes. Still, having Skarm out actually works great for me cause I can set up some Spikes. I don’t fear the WoW that much because I’ll do more damage with Spikes that the residual damage will hurt my Skarm.

Finally I get to set up Spikes, this should help as most of his switches resist SR. If you have noticed from previous turns or even my previous warstory, I don’t mind Ferro double switching into Gastro at all while I still have Xatu. The more switches he does, more entry hazard damage for me.

So here I was thinking for some time. Will he absorb the sleep? He definitely has a Resttalk set but will he be willing to be asleep on my terms? Giratina is only useful for him at the moment for phasing so I would think he would like to keep it awaken to spam Dragon Tail later. He can Rest against many of my defensive pokes later to heal the hazards damage. So, assuming he switches I would like to add some more damage so I go for the Scald in case he goes into Ferrothorn to hope for the burn as a slept Ferro doesn’t hurt him so much.

Useless hax for me and unlucky him that he didn’t get the burn. I predicted wrong there and a burn could have helped his Kyogre. With 56% he is asleep now so he can’t heal himself and his moves will be luck based so let’s try to get Dialga untouched to see if I can scare him away.

Oh well, luck on his favor this time I guess. A burn to my Dialga would not have matter that much (I don’t have a physical attack on him) as long as I still have balloon for Gliscor (I don’t like relying too much on Xatu as I often will sacrifice him to get a safe switch for Deo-A if needed). But Skarm is out now which means I can either use Spikes again or Whirlwind. At this point I want to check which Arceus he has so I can plan accordingly late game.

Interesting. If not Normal (Extremekiller) I'm used to see Ground Arceus or Fighting Arceus paired up with Kyogre. I’d seen only one Arceus Dragon before and it was a mono CM version. So here there are two alternatives: a) is a special version or b) is a physical version. If it is a special version then it could be a CM with Sub and Recover so Whirlwind would be the right move but what if he has a SE move? If it is a Fire attack I should be ok since is raining. For a second there I thought he might have the Thunder (makes more sense on a Kyogre team) but if that was the case, he woulda switched it earlier. Hmm, I’m at 100% which means he can’t OHKO thanks to Sturdy. I’m leaning more towards either a physical version (never saw that before) or a mono CM version. In any case I’ll phase him out.

    Patt called Ferrothorn back!
    Patt sent out Dialga!
Pointed stones dug into the foe's Dialga!
The foe's Dialga is hurt by spikes!
    The foe's Dialga fainted!

    ID4 used Low Kick!
    But there was no target...

That was a weird move on his part. If he wanted to scout my move he coulda switched into Kyogre now, unless he was thinking I had Espeed, which I don’t. Kyogre is also on the KO range with Low Kick so there is no reason to overpredict.

    Start of turn 37
    ID4 used Low Kick!
    It's super effective!

The foe's Ferrothorn lost 60% of its health!

I don’t want to predict too much in crucial moments like this. If I go for the Psyshock instead of the Ice Beam, he can kill me with EQ and then Gastro *could* kill him with Scald but it’ll probably leave it too damaged with Toxic to wall Kyogre OR he could just switch between Kyogre and Gliscor to stall my Gastro. I can still get a Deo-A switch in if I sacrifice Dialga so Ice Beam should be the right choice.

    Start of turn 38
    The foe's Gliscor used Protect!
    The foe's Gliscor protected itself!

The foe's Gliscor restored HP using its Poison Heal!

    [IMG]43% [IMG]100%

Scouting or mindgames? He knew I had the Ice Beam, maybe he didn’t want to risk the Kyogre switch due to entry hazards. Then I looked at my HP. He may want to kill me with LO recoil from resisted attacks + SR switch damage. But that’s not going to happen. Not hard to predict.

    Start of turn 39
    Patt called Gliscor back!
    Patt sent out Kyogre!
Pointed stones dug into the foe's Kyogre!
The foe's Kyogre is hurt by spikes!

    Props:

    - Deoxys-A for killing 5 of his 6 pokes.
    - His Dragon Arceus for drawing first blood.
    - Hazards for killing Dialga.

    Slops:

    - Some minor hax (WoW miss, Draco Meteor miss).
    - Gastrodon using Yawn when Sleep Clause was activated.
    - His Gliscor for not doing anything.
    - My Giratina-O for not doing anything.

Again, any comments regarding format/style will be appreciated. If you want to comment on my team feel free to do so as I'm open to constructive criticism. I hope this warstory encourage people into play more in the Ubers tier. You could argue that is more overcentralized than OU but as you can see, you can use that to your favor if you know the metagame.

smart play and good commentary, but the match was a little bit one-sided to be really good war story material

Agreeing with Stathakis: while there was good playing, in the end it did come down to a 6-man Deoxys sweep and wasn't very close at all.

Agreeing with the two above. While there was certainly some smart play from your end, I really never felt like you weren't in control of the battle except for that brief moment when Arcues got off a sword dance (Then proceeded to fuck itself over by locking itself into Outrage).

Commentary was informative but somewhat bland as well. However, I did like your team. It always takes guts to use Xatu, especially in Ubers!

Great warstory. I don't really mind such a one sided score since you actually took your time to set up the Deo-A sweep with hazards and smart play (as opposed to a striaght up 6-0). Also, great commentary and formatting.

I ended up liking your team breakdown more than the actual battle lol

I did like your game plan though. In BW I find that predictions aren't even necessary as long as you develop an appropriate strategy prior to beginning the match.

The formatting was excellent, and made the story a lot easier to read. The commentary was appropriate for the turns being described, but it wasn't really "vibrant." I don't know what to tell you about that though, that's just something you get better at in time. The battle itself was very good for the first 85% or so, but that it came nowhere close at the end to being really suspenseful was a little bit of a turn-off. I guess when you get a battle that was especially technical and complex you get eager to write about it even if the tail end wasn't so great. Not a big deal.

The formatting was the best part, in my opinion; I can't remember a warstory I was able to read so easily. I'm very ADD, and am seldom able to read a warstory straight through (seriously, I can't even proof-read my own because of it), but this was no problem.

Overall a good job, just needs some tweaking.

Thanks for the comments. I don't see the match one-sided though. My team is designed "just" to deal with rain stall teams. Any variant or small change greatly affects my team as I don't really have a dedicated special wall, I don't have a scarfer and my only sweeper is Deo-A who is 2HKOed by Tentacruel's Rapid Spin. Also, as soon as Xatu fainted, I had no real answer to Gliscor. Notice that is very hard to get a switch in with Deoxys-A unless you are revenge killing.

Team preview has established a different approach to battles, I agree. You know the opponent's team but he knows that you know. I used to predict waay more in GenIV but the added factor of your opponent knowing that you know his counters to some pokes has made me play more conservatively.

Another point that a lot of Ubers player make to non-Ubers players is that, yes it can be an overcentralizing tier, BUT the same poke run different sets with different counters. Examples:
    - Groudon can be defensive support, Rock Polish, Paradancer, SubBU, double dancer or even CB.
    - In GenIV Rayquaza had a Mix set, DD set and SD set. You couldn't know which set he was running until you saw him either DMing, DDing or SDing and each one of them had different counters.
    - Dialga has a zillion sets: Scarf, Specs, Support, BU, TR and even CB.

Even Arceus has different sets depending on which Arceus you are running. Team preview doesn't tell you which Arceus is, and even if you find out is say, Ghost Arceus you don't know if it is the physical or the CM set.

I'm trying to advertise the Ubers tier so that the OU/UU players out there get to know more of the metagame and eventually give it a try.

This is probably the biggest reason I like ubers and their warstories. I loved the battle and your conservative playstyle. 8/10 from me. Keep em comin.

Interesting warstory (less mainstream metagame), like others have said despite this being slightly curbstomp-ish the commentary is good enough to warrant a 8/10.

Great warstory for an underrated metagame. I don't think Deoxys-A is a popular Sweeper in Ubers nowadays, so props for the successful sweep! I agree with Blightbringer; I enjoyed reading your explanation about the team's core. You really handled the classic FerroOgre with Gastrodon + Xatu :d. Skarmory also did good work in this battle.

    Great job, locoghoul!

It is always enjoyable to see decent warstories come from an underrated tier such as this.

Formatting was right on the money. Comments were appropriate.

'something about it being one sided' Though had you not played defensively prior you would not have been able to net the much needed Deoxys-A game changer.

How were you able to determine that Giratina was a sleep talker (his) the instant it came out? Do all regular Giratina's in Uber's run restalk?

The Dragon Tail gave it away I'd imagine, since it's used most commonly with RestTalk.

Pretty much all giratina's run resttalk, it's horribly weak to toxic and lacks reliable recovery otherwise.

This was a good warstory in terms of formatting, the battle itself was a little too one-sided but nevertheless it was an enjoyable read. Good job, better than your first.

don't get me wrong, I love the commentary and the long-term thinking. some call it dry, I call it excellent. I just think there's nothing really eye-popping about this particular battle.

Honestly, I didn't really like this warstory, mainly because it wasn't a good battle to cover. People have already mentioned how it was pretty one-sided, and I couldn't really see anything exciting about the battle. However, the commentary was excellent, and you definitely showed that you knew what to do. If you can just get a better battle next time, I'm sure you're going to do great with your future warstories. 5.5/10

Since I only play Ubers, it makes me very happy to see warstories covering it. I really hope you (and I hope others) keep writing them, as I think Ubers really deserves more attention. Having said that, I do have to echo what many others have already said that the battle was pretty one sided. Also, I really wish your comments went a little more in depth. Maybe I have just been spoiled by some of the OU warstories I have read (like R-N-G Vexxes Me), but maybe consider a little more commentary.

Nevertheless, overall pretty good battle and I look forward to your next one.

It is nice to see an Ubers warstory (since they are less common). Furthermore, your team was pretty interesting for Ubers!

I agree with others that the match was a bit one-sided (especially with the Deoxys sweep at the end), but your format and commentary made up for it as it was interesting to see the rhyme and reason behind your team!
