[Overview]

Flareon is truly overdue some new toys to play with. Since RBY, the rest of the eeveelutions have had their own roles to play (and dominate), whilst Flareon has been hindered by a few details. Flareon's low Speed is a major weakness, but it is also hindered by low Defense, and strange stat distribution in general. It suffers from a lack of good physical STAB attacks to take advantage of its relatively high Attack stat, and later generations only brought Flareon more trouble; the introduction of Stealth Rock made being a Fire-type unfavorable. What Flareon does have to work with, however, is Wish access, and a workable Special Defense stat that make it ideal for supporting its teammates.

    [SET]
    name: Wish
    move 1: Wish
    move 2: Protect
move 3: Flamethrower / Lava Plume
    move 4: Toxic / Roar
    item: Leftovers
    ability: Flash Fire
    nature: Calm
    evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD

    [SET COMMENTS]

Flareon's high Special Defense makes it capable of being a surprisingly decent special wall, with enough bulk to really make a stalling set work. Wish and Protect will keep Flareon on its feet and ensure that it outlasts its opponents whilst they suffer from Toxic. The real strength of this set is that it allows Flareon to outmatch bulky Water-types, and special walls that would otherwise be a big problem. Roar will chase off pesky Substitute + Calm Mind users who would otherwise outlast Flareon, or at the very least throw a spanner in the works. Flamethrower or Lava Plume provide Flareon some STAB to finish off opponents weakened by Toxic and to give you some offensive Fire-type coverage, but think twice before carrying Lava Plume; the extra damage is nice, but the chance to burn will leave Flareon unable to poison its opponents with Toxic. Lastly, Wish can be passed onto another teammate in a pinch.

    [ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EVs maximize Flareon's HP and Special Defense to make it as bulky as possible, and allow it to eat Scalds without worry. You might consider Heal Bell over Roar and Toxic for a more support-oriented twist on this set, but bear in mind the lack of stalling power along with the loss of Toxic. Flareon really appreciates the support of physical walls to cover its paper-thin Defense; Eviolite Tangela, Quagsire, and Alomomola all fill this role well. If you're carrying Roar over Toxic, Toxic Spikes support will go down well to fill the hole Toxic leaves, and Scolipede fits this role perfectly. Thanks to Flareon's big Stealth Rock weakness, Rapid Spin support comes highly recommended. Wartortle is a good fit for the job, and will appreciate Wish in return.

    [Other Options]

Flareon's access to Curse, Work Up, and Flame Charge all provide the possibility of sets boosting Flareon's weaker stats, the latter covering its poor Speed and with some STAB for good measure. Curse and Work Up can also be used on a Baton Pass set along with Substitute, but Combusken already fills this niche better than Flareon. BBW gave Flareon Guts as a secondary ability, which can be abused to raise its Attack stat. Sadly, most of Flareon's usable physical moves, such as Iron Tail and Superpower are illegal in a set alongside Guts.

Choice Items provide a few opportunities for Flareon. Equipping it with a Choice Band makes its already decent Attack stat quite formidable, but again its physical movepool leaves a lot to be desired. Choice Scarf will boost Flareon's Speed enough to make dry passing to scout for counters possible, but Emboar carries off a Choice Scarf set much more convincingly, and dry passing alone is little reason to take up a spot on your team. Building a set around Flareon's Attack stat is difficult, but possible. Fire Fang, Bite, Return, Facade, Dig, and Rock Smash are all possibilities, but bear in mind that Flareon's hopeless Defense will hamper it; its Speed is too low to get hits off before its opponents, and carrying Choice Band to counter this in turn stops you from boosting its Attack stat to ensure those hits are OHKOs. Flareon also has access to a few more interesting utility moves such as Yawn, Confuse Ray, and Charm. Of particular note is Fake Tears, which will lower the opponent's Special Defense. This may in part make up for Flareon's poor Special Attack stat if you are feeling particularly imaginative, but investment in Flareon's offensive stats ensures a loss of bulk.

    [Checks and Counters]

While Flareon can stall bulky Water-types to a degree, the bulkiest of Water-types will still give Flareon some trouble. Alomomola, Wartortle, and Quagsire all fit the description. Physically-oriented Rock-types will crush Flareon with ease thanks to its poor Defense, so watch out for Golem and Regirock, and even defensive variants of Armaldo. Any offensively-oriented set on Flareon can be revenge killed easily thanks to the necessary investment of EVs in its Attack or Special Attack, so long as the revenge killer carries something physical.

I think you should mention the mixed attacker set from last gen even if only in AC.

Rhydon is RU, other than that I can't see anything else really worth mentioning that's already in AC.

    Yeah near enough.
I just checked my boxes and this is the set I have:

    Flareon (M) @ Life Orb
    Ability: Flash Fire
    EVs: 120 Atk/136 Spd/252 SpAtk
    Lonely nature (+Atk,-Def)
    - Fire Blast
    - Hidden Power [Grass]
    - Return
    - Superpower
    ---

Frankly, I've no idea what the EVs are for anymore, I used to know but hey. HeySup may know, I believe this was his set somewhere...

I'll admit it's largely outclassed by Magmortar, but higher attack and Superpower kind of distinguishes is.
