[Overview]

Meet yet another Dragon-type that imitates its big brother: Gabite. Gabite might not stand out as much, lacking the overwhelming offensive power that both Fraxure and Zweilous possess, and it might not have the defensive capabilities of Shelgon, but Gabite does have attributes that the others only wish they had. First of all is Gabite's typing. Dragon / Ground is great offensively, giving Gabite almost unresisted STAB, and while its typing does give it a crippling weakness to Ice-type moves, Gabite resists Stealth Rock and is immune to Electric-type moves; this makes it easier for Gabite to switch in. Even though Gabite's base 90 Attack stat might not measure up to Fraxure and Zweilous, its base 82 Speed stat makes it the fastest Dragon-type in NU. However, Gabite lacks Dragon Dance and has to rely on Hone Claws to boost its Attack, unlike the other Dragons, while it's pretty frail and can't take hits well without Eviolite, making it hard for Gabite to accomplish anything without it. But with a good movepool consisting of moves such as Earthquake, Stone Edge, and Dragon Rush, with the latter two receiving an accuracy boost by using Hone Claws, Gabite become a rather dangerous Pokemon to face with the right support.

[SET COMMENTS]

Gabite was blessed with a boosting move in BW: Hone Claws. Even though it doesn't raise Gabite's Speed stat like Dragon Dance, Hone Claws's Attack and accuracy boosts will still work with Gabite's relatively high Speed stat and powerful, but inaccurate, moves. Earthquake is one of Gabite's most powerful STAB moves, and is the most reliable one. Earthquake will come to great use if Gabite doesn't have a Hone Claws boost yet, always hitting the target with its perfect accuracy, and lets Gabite smash Steel-types, such as Probopass, into the ground. Dragon Rush is Gabite's preferred Dragon-type STAB move due to its high power and its accuracy being patched up by Hone Claws; Dragon Rush won't lock Gabite into a move, unlike Outrage. Stone Edge is the second of Gabite's moves to receive an accuracy boost from Hone Claws, and will hit Pokemon such as Braviary and Glaceon harder than its other moves; Flying-types that are immune to Earthquake are the most notable foes Stone Edge hits, though.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Outrage is still a viable option over Dragon Rush if you prefer as much power as possible, but locking Gabite into a move with this set is not the greatest idea. Substitute is also a solid option, as it will ease prediction, while it keeps Gabite safe from unwanted status. Life Orb can be used over Eviolite for more power, but without the bulk it gains from Eviolite, Gabite can find it hard to get a boost through Hone Claws to accomplish anything. Pokemon that can draw in Electric-type moves will greatly aid Gabite, as they allow it to switch in without harm. Water- and Flying-type Pokemon, such as Gorebyss, Mantine, Swellow, and Braviary, are all extremely weak to the common Thunderbolt, and will almost always draw one out. Jynx makes a great partner to Gabite, as she can effectively bring down physical walls, such as Tangela and Weezing, with her powerful, super effective, special STAB moves. Exeggutor is also a good choice, being able to get rid of Regirock and Quagsire. On that note, Pokemon that can effectively take down opposing Jynx, such as Miltank and Magmortar, make ideal teammates as well.

[SET]
name: Choice Band
move 1: Outrage
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Stone Edge
move 4: Toxic / Dragon Claw
item: Choice Band
nature: Jolly / Adamant
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Choice Band trades the freedom of switching moves and Eviolite's extra bulk for immediate power. With Choice Band, Gabite can be sent in and start launching Outrages to its heart's content, dealing heavy damage to anything that doesn't resist it. Earthquake works great in combination with Gabite's Outrage, and its two STAB moves grant Gabite almost perfect coverage, as Earthquake hits the Steel-types that resist Outrage, such as Probopass and Bastiodon, for an easy OHKO. Stone Edge hits Flying-types, as well as Shedinja, expecting to switch in on Gabite's Earthquake, extremely hard. Toxic is used to poison incoming physically defensive Pokemon, such as Tangela, expecting to wall Gabite. Lastly, Dragon Claw be used as a more safe Dragon-type option, in case the power behind Outrage isn't needed.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

An Adamant nature can be used for more power, but this will make Gabite unable to outspeed max positive base 80 Speed Pokemon, which are very common. One should also be careful and only switch in Gabite on moves it resists or is immune to, as without Eviolite, Gabite can't take many hits. Entry hazards help Gabite a lot, as they will rack up damage, while it can effectively keep the opponent from switching. Garbodor and Whirlipede can effectively set up both Toxic Spikes and Spikes, while Cacturne and Regirock can set up Spikes and Stealth Rock, respectively. It is wise to get rid of certain threats before you send Gabite in. Miltank can effectively take down opposing Jynx, as she can easily end Gabite in one blow. A fellow Jynx can also help Gabite in taking down physical walls such as Tangela and Weezing, who completely stop Gabite. Exeggutor is also a viable option to take down the aforementioned Pokemon, as well as Regirock and Quagsire.

[Other Options]

Even though Gabite's movepool is good, there aren't many great options left that are worth using. Dual Chop is an interesting STAB move Gabite could use, being able to break through Substitutes. Gabite also has interesting support moves such as Stealth Rock and Dragon Tail, but a support set is not a very good way to use Gabite and it should stick to offensive play. With an expansive special movepool, including moves such as Draco Meteor, Earth Power, and Fire Blast, makes a mixed set seem like a possibility; however, Gabite's terrible base 50 Special Attack pretty much sends that idea to its grave. Choice Scarf is also an option, but Gabite becomes incredibly weak without the Attack boost from Choice Band or Hone Claws.

[Checks and Counters]

Gabite is far from unstoppable. The most effective way to take Gabite down is to simply send in a Pokemon that outspeeds and effectively OHKOes it. Examples of this include, but are not limited to, Jynx, Sawk, and Swellow. Choice Scarf Zweilous is an effective answer as well. Another approach at taking Gabite down is pure, physical defense. Tangela and Weezing with their high Defense stats can effectively take hits from Gabite, while crippling it with Sleep Powder and Will-O-Wisp, respectively. Quagsire is also an effective counter, ignoring any boosts Gabite might have acquired from Hone Claws, while having access to both Recover and Scald. Leafeon can make an effective counter as well, while Carracosta can take a super effective Earthquake quite well thanks to Solid Rock and a base 133 Defense stat, and can effectively OHKO Gabite with Ice Beam.

[Unreleased]

Gabite receives Rough Skin as its Dream World ability. Rough Skin is actually a real blessing for Gabite, as its current ability, Sand Veil, has no benefits in the current NU metagame, which lack permanent sandstorm. Rough Skin will work great with the bulk Gabite gets from Eviolite.
