Gallade (Trick Room)

Been testing this set for a couple days and have found it rather fun to use. This set has only been tested in the OverUsed metagame, although may function even better in the UnderUsed metagame. However, I don't think Gallade will remain very long in UU anywho.

[SET COMMENTS]
<p>Gallade is one of very few Pokemon who can set up Trick Room and use it to sweep. Gallade is the only Fighting-type (outside of Fist Plate Arceus) in the game to learn Trick Room, and gives your team much needed versatility among Trick Room users. While most are weak to Pursuit or Fighting-type attacks, Gallade is weak to neither. He also possesses the highest Attack of any non-Uber Pokemon that also learns Trick Room, making a good asset to have on your team.</p>

<p>With a mighty base 125 Attack stat and a 120 Base Power STAB move, your foe will have a difficult time countering Gallade. With max Hit Point investment, Gallade can take a hit or two to find time to set up Trick Room. Zen Headbutt gives you secondary STAB and has a 20% chance to flinch. It is your most powerful option against Gyarados and Machamp, but it leaves you walled against Cresselia and other bulky Psychic-types. Night Slash is a viable alternative to hit Cresselia and Starmie super effectively, while also guaranteeing a 2HKO on Rotom-A. Ice Punch rounds out the set by giving you a way to maim Gliscor, Salamence, Flygon, and other Pokemon that are weak to Ice Punch. Gallade can come in on weak special attacks from Blissey and the like, as well as a myriad of resisted attacks, especially from Pokemon holding a Choice item.</p>

[Additional Comments]

<p>Gallade's Speed is as low as possible, hitting 148. The only Pokemon who will be going before you under Trick Room are base 55's and lower, as well as Relaxed Swampert. The EV spread guarantees Gallade survives a Life Orb Gengar's Shadow Ball. The rest of the EVs power Gallade's Attack. Life Orb is the preferred item, but if the recoil is conflicting with Gallade's bulk , then Expert Belt can be used, still netting the OHKO on Gliscor, after Stealth Rock, with Ice Punch. Lum Berry can also be used to avoid Will-O-Wisp, if only to defeat Rotom-A easier with Night Slash.</p>

<p>Although it is best to use this set in a Trick Room team, that is not always necessary, as Gallade is deadly on his own. Trick Room functions similarly to Agility, only instead of extremely fast Pokemon moving before you, extremely slow Pokemon will. The main Pokemon who will wall this set are defensive Cresselia and defensive Gyarados. Porygon2 counters Gyarados extremely well and does not fear Shadow Ball like Rotom-A or Starmie would, while also being able to set up Trick Room. Although Slowbro shares a Ghost-type weakness with Gallade, Slowbro easily counters Gyarados with Psychic or Hidden Power Electric. Slowbro is also very good at setting up Trick Room, just in case Gallade doesn't find the time to set it up himself. Scizor counters Cresselia easily and functions well in Trick Room due to its low Speed. Tyranitar also overpowers Cresselia without much trouble and is a truly nasty mixed attacker in Trick Room, functioning as an excellent wall breaker. Since defensive Rotom-A cannot be OHKOed by any move Gallade uses, it threatens to burn Gallade, which would drain Gallade's effectiveness. Although Tyranitar counters Rotom-A decently, it also faces the threat of Will-O-Wisp. Heatran enjoys switching in on Will-O-Wisp and thus, makes a great counter to pesky Rotom-A. On a Trick Room team, Snorlax makes a superb partner to Gallade to reliably counter Gengar and Selfdestruct on Pokemon such as Hippowdon and Metagross who Gallade cannot easily defeat.</p>

Would you want to mention Swords Dance in this set by the way MetaNite?

How does Scizor counter Rotom-A outside Night Slash? Rotom-A is the best Scizor counter there is.

With a mighty 125 base Attack stat and a 120 base power STAB move, your foe will have a difficult time countering Gallade. With max Hit Point investment, Gallade can even take a couple hits This is misleading. Gallade certainly won't be taking hits from any offensively oriented Pokemon. Maybe say "take a hit" and find time to set up Trick Room. Zen Headbutt gives you secondary STAB and a 20% chance to flinch. It is your most powerful option against Gyarados and Machamp, but it leaves you walled against Cresselia and other bulky pure Psychic-types. The rest of the EVs power Gallade's Attack. Life Orb is the preferred item, but if the recoil is conflicting with Gallade's bulk then Expert Belt can be used. Does Gallade get supereffective coverage that warrants the use of an Expert Belt? Probably not, so I would at least mention stuff like Lum Berry or even Leftovers.</p>

I'm confused: who will be using Shadow Ball? Why not say "Ghost-type moves? Although Slowbro shares a Ghost-type attack weakness with Gallade, Slowbro easily counters Gyarados with Psychic or Hidden Power Electric. Good work overall, just my thoughts.

Made corrections. Thanks guys.

@Sheshi: Gallade doesn't really have time to use Swords Dance, it's only situationally effective.

@Darkmalice: True. I was thinking about Pursuit for those without WoW but that just doesn't make sense when you think about it.

@mtr: Gallade hits 11/17 types super effective, which I consider enough. And, like you implied, Gallade can't really switch in repeatedly to take hits which is why I've found Leftovers mediocre (Expert Belt is often necessary for the OHKO on Gliscor). I'll mention Lum Berry however. Shadow Ball is pretty much the only Ghost-type move ever used, bar the occasional Shadow Sneak, which Rotom-A and Slowbro do not fear, being defensively orientated.

I'm not going to lie, I question this set's efficiency. Is it possible to collect a few logs proving this dude's usefulness and / or other testimonials?

Skarmory counters Gyarados well and does not fear Shadow Ball like Rotom-A or Starmie would.
I think both of the points in this sentence are void. Skarmory may not technically fear a Shadow Ball, but it definetly doesn't want to switch into Rotom formes or Gengar. Also, saying Skarmory counters Gyara is sketchy. While I suppose it can Whirlwind away RestTalk Gyara, it has trouble with most other forms (other variants of Gyara still counter this Gallade set).

Also, adding some examples of Pokemon who this Gallade can set up on would be really helpful. All I can really see at the moment is Blissey considering it takes her weak special attacks really well and threatens her out, but there has to be others.

When I first starting testing this set I was debating whether I should save logs or not, and now I wish I did. Here is what I gathered between now and yesterday however. Most of the time, Gallade either does his small yet important part to lead me to the win, or he does nothing and I lose inevitably which is why it was fairly difficult to find good logs. Here is nine:

It would have been wiser for me to use Zen Headbutt first instead of Close Combat, so Kingdra's Waterfall would not have done so much.

Mentioned some things Gallade can set up on and replaced mention of Skarmory with Porygon2.

[SET COMMENTS]
<p>Gallade is one of very few Pokemon who can set up Trick Room and use it to sweep. With a mighty base 125 Attack stat and a 120 Base Power STAB move in Close Combat, your foe will have a difficult time countering Gallade. Gallade can come in on many weaker Special Attacks, such as a Surf from Latias or Thunderbolt from Zapdos, as well as a myriad of resisted attacks, especially from Pokemon holding a Choice item.</p>

<p>Gallade's Speed is as low as possible, hitting 148. The only Pokemon who will be going before you under Trick Room are base 55's and lower, as well as Relaxed Swampert. The EV spread guarantees Gallade survives a Life Orb Gengar's Shadow Ball and a Choice Specs Draco Meteor from Latias. The rest of the EVs power Gallade's Attack. Life Orb is the preferred item, but if the recoil is conflicting with Gallade's bulk, then Expert Belt can be used, still netting the OHKO on Gliscor, after Stealth Rock, with Ice Punch.

Nice work MetaNite.

All of the grammar issues have already been nipped, I just have one question; how is this superior to other Trick Room users? HGSS made sure that Trick Room was widely distributed, and now many Pokemon have it in their arsenals. Is a better support movepool what sets Gallade apart? Higher offensive power? I'm just curious.

That is actually a good thing to add to the write up, which I just did add a little bit, thanks. Basically, of all the Trick Room users, there aren't really any good physical attackers outside of Ubers. Gallade is pretty much the only great physical sweeper who also learns Trick Room (you can't really call Dusknoir a physical sweeper), while being slow enough to use it.

Put in the Additional Comments tag. This will hopefully be my final bump. QC, Please either dismiss this set or pass it. Thank you.

Pardon me for poking in here, but the set seems as viable as the Offensive TR Bronzong analysis that went up earlier. It does have problem pokemon such as Rotom-A, but Bronzong suffered the same issues.

This set is somewhat similar to the agility Lucario set that's currently pending in terms of moves and coverage. Gallade loses out on the ability to hit Rotom-A for SE damage and outpace opponents before TR, but has a lot more bulk and can pseudo-pass the TR for other team members.

if you were going to make Gallade a trick room user, I would suggest something like WoW/taunt..some kind of support role.

Current set seems to much of a gimmick il have to pass on it

Just a small suggestion, but maybe drop the HP EVs down to 248 so that your max HP sits at 339 instead of 340. Doesn't make a terrible difference in terms of reducing residual damage, but you keep essentially the same bulk initially while "breaking even" after a single turn of LO recoil.

Tried this set out a while back, it was decent, I can only say that since I'm Mixape biased however, and I do my own testing. Didn't like what my Gliscor did to this Gallade after a taunt however.

So yeah I have tested this set out and I have to say that I'm not pleased with the way it worked out. I used this set in 2 teams non of which utilized a full Trick Room strategy; one of these teams was simple and orientated into the Bulky Offense side. After having seen that the opportunities to switch in Gallade were very limited, I made a few tweaks and grabbed another team, this time with entry hazards included (Spikes + SR) so that the "suspect" would receive more support from its teammates. I played for another while, and it seemed to be doing better, but even then I used to find hard to bring in on Gallade and use Trick Room. Additionally, I not only found Gyarados walling me all the way out, but Rotom-A, Skarmory, Hippowdon, and bulky Water-types as well. In summary, based on the observations I noticed while experimenting with this set, I've come to the conclusion that it boasts little opportunities for doing what it's expected to do. Therefore, I'm sorry but I have to say no on this.
