Garbodor [0/3]

[OVERVIEW]

Pros:
  • Mono poison is a decent defensive typing, allowing it to check the plethora of grass types in the tier
  • Decent defensive stats
  • Base 95 attack and a high-powered STAB in Gunk Shot prevents it from being setup fodder
  • Aftermath allows it to do damage to contact attackers when it is KO'd
Cons:
  • No reliable recovery (pain split isn't that reliable)
  • It's typing is a double-edged sword as it leaves it weak to common Ground and Psychic attacks
  • Is somewhat outclassed by Weezing, as Weezing has access to Taunt and has an immunity to Ground-type attacks
[SET]
name: Spikes
move 1: Spikes
move 2: Gunk Shot
move 3: Toxic Spikes / Toxic
move 4: Pain Split / Haze
item: Rocky Helmet / Black Sludge
ability: Aftermath
nature: Impish
evs: 248 HP / 188 Def / 72 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

  • Spikes wears down grounded opponents when they switch in
  • Toxic Spikes poisons Pokemon that switch in, while Seed Bomb hits things like Seismitoad and Rhyperior
  • Gunk Shot is a powerful STAB move to hit opposing Pokemon
  • Toxic makes sure Garbodor doesnt get walled by defensive pokemon
  • Pain Split gives Garbodor semi-reliable recovery
  • Haze prevents Garbodor from being setup fodder

Set Details
========
  • Black Sludge can be used to have some recovery every turn
  • Can run Careful if you need a Venusaur check more than a fighting-type check
  • EVs avoid 2HKO from Jolly Life Orb Hitmonlee even with Stealth Rock up

Usage Tips
========

  • Use either entry hazard depending on the opposing team
  • Toxic Spikes wears down teams without a hazard remover or cleric
  • Spikes can be used to wear down bulky teams
  • If Garbodor's HP is low you can sacrifice it to a Pokemon with contact moves to get chip damage with Aftermath

Team Options
========
  • Spiritomb can Pursuit-trap Psychic-types and can also spinblock for Garbodor
  • Samurott checks the Rock and Ground-types that wall Garbodor while Garbodor checks grass attacks
  • Delphox can force out Poison-types and Steel-types

[SET]
name: Offensive Spikes
move 1: Spikes
move 2: Toxic Spikes / Drain Punch
move 3: Gunk Shot
move 4: Explosion
item: Normal Gem
ability: Aftermath
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 Def

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

  • Spikes damages grounded pokemon when they switch in
  • Gunk Shot hits many pokemon hard and can dent some walls
  • Toxic Spikes allows pokemon to take some residual damage if they choose to switch in
  • However Drain Punch can be used so that Garbodor isn't completely walled by Steel types
  • Explosion helps block Defog and Rapid Spin while dealing at least 62% to Blastoise and 90% to defensive Flygon
Set Details
========

  • Max attack and speed allow for maximum damage output and also allowing Garbodor to outspeed neutral base 70's, max base 60's, and defensive Flygon
  • Aftermath helps check physical attackers
  • Normal Gem is used to get maximum damage on Explosion
Usage Tips
========

  • Should be used as an offensive pivot as Garbodor has natural bulk and also the power to hit many spinners and defoggers for a large amount of damage
  • The speed investment allows Garbodor to outspeed more pokemon and thus set up more layers of spikes
  • Has a niche over other spikes setters as it can switch into more attacks
  • If Garbodor is low on health you can switch it into an incoming contact move so you can take away 25% of their health via Aftermath
Team Options
========

  • This set is more useful on more offensive teams as it can keep up offensive pressure while also setting down entry hazards effectively
  • Sneasel puts pressure on Flygon while also being able to pursuit trap Psychic-types
  • Houndoom can also be used as a pursuit trapper, except it's also able to get past steel types such as Registeel while not being able to beat Flygon
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • Rock Polish can be used to sweep as Garbodor has a decent speed and attack stat while also having great coverage
  • Has a wide special movepool with Thunderbolt, Giga Drain, and Focus Blast, however it has roughly the same coverage in it's physical movepool while also having a larger attack stat
  • Drain Punch can be used to hit steel types, but it does very little damage
  • Payback can be used to hit Psychic types
  • Seed Bomb hits ground types for decent damage.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Psychic types**: Garbodor can be revenge killed by them, although many dont appreciate switching into a Gunk Shot
**Bulky Ground types**: Rhyperior is a good switchin for Garbodor as it resists it's STAB mobes and can force it out with Earthquake
**Taunt Users** Jellicent can Taunt Garbodor, although since it's slower Garbodor can still set up a Spikes before it is taunted

Remove the offensive set, it's not good enough to deserve a set. It'd be cooler if it actually outsped Flygon. Just mention it in OO.

Make the main set:

name: Spikes
move 1: Spikes
move 2: Gunk Shot
move 3: Toxic Spikes / Toxic
move 4: Pain Split / Haze
item: Rocky Helmet
ability: Aftermath
nature: Impish
evs: 248 HP / 160 Def / 100 SpD

relevant calcs:

252 Atk Life Orb Reckless Hitmonlee High Jump Kick vs. 252 HP / 160+ Def Garbodor: 140-165 (38.4 - 45.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252 SpA Life Orb Venusaur Leaf Storm vs. 252 HP / 100 SpD Garbodor: 121-143 (33.2 - 39.2%) -- 100% chance to 3HKO

Mention Payback and Seed Bomb as other viable moves and Black Sludge as another item if you really need Garbodor to check fighters/venu, but it really shouldn't be your only check to those. Also mention Careful as a good nature if you really need Garbodor to beat Venusaur a little better rather than Fighting-types.

Move Drain Punch to OO, it does so little damage to everything.

Also you need to expand more in the Overview / Set Details / Usage Tips / C&C section. They're kind of barebones right now and need to be more descriptive.

Okay I'll fix that when I get home.
Just FYI when you say "outspeed Flygon" do you mean offensive Flygon? Max speed (adamant) Garb hits 249 while Defensive Flygon usually hits 242

Most defensive Flygon run 252 Speed now, or at least enough to outspeed Houndoom.

Come on now DTC

I don't feel like these calcs really show why this particular spread of investment is necessary, unless you were trying to account for Adamant Hitmonlee:
252+ Atk Life Orb Reckless Hitmonlee High Jump Kick vs. 248 HP / 160+ Def Garbodor: 153-181 (42.1 - 49.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Reckless Hitmonlee High Jump Kick vs. 248 HP / 156+ Def Garbodor: 155-183 (42.6 - 50.4%) -- 1.2% chance to 2HKO

Since that post, I've been using 248 HP / 188 Def+ / 72 SpD. That avoids the 2HKO from LO Jolly Hitmonlee HJK all the time even with SR up, and the additional damage you take from Venusaur Leaf Storm isn't too substantial. In addition, Garbodor is more suited towards taking physical hits anyways because of Rocky Helmet and Aftermath, so more investment in Defense is generally better anyways.

160 Defense is nice because it hit a jump point, but I think it's better to put a bit more investment into Defense since Garbodor without Black Sludge is not the best Venusaur answer anyways and should be paired with better checks, and Rocky Helmet is just generally more useful.
