Gastly

    --------

    [Overview]

Gastly has great Speed and Special Attack, but is held back by poor defenses. It has 3 great immunities—Normal, Fighting, and Ground—which let Gastly switch in easily and compensate for its low defenses. Most common priority moves, including Fake Out, Quick Attack, and ExtremeSpeed, are of these types, allowing Gastly to make the best use of its excellent Speed. Gastly hits hard, has great Speed, and is now the best offensive Ghost-type in Little Cup.

    [SET]

    name: Substitute
    move 1: Substitute
    move 2: Shadow Ball
move 3: Hidden Power Fighting / Hidden Power Ice
    move 4: Sludge Bomb
item: Oran Berry / Life Orb
    ability: Levitate
    nature: Timid
    evs: 68 HP / 40 Def / 200 SAtk / 200 Spe

    [SET COMMENTS]

This is Gastly's most effective set, since it can apply pressure to the opponent, easily setting up Substitute thanks to its many immunities. From behind a Substitute Gastly can hit the opponent with the most appropriate move, causing large amounts of damage and sometimes even KOing. Shadow Ball and Hidden Power Fighting give unresisted coverage and hit most Pokemon very hard. Sludge Bomb has poor coverage, but it is more powerful than Shadow Ball, and can be useful for extra damage against Pokemon that are neutral to both moves. Oran Berry recovers some health that you will lose from setting up Substitutes.

    [ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

In the third slot, Hidden Power Fire is an option, Ferroseed, but otherwise offers little coverage, as it is 2HKOed by Hidden Power Fighting anyway. As for the last slot, there is a large variety of options, including Will-O-wisp, which can cripple physical Pokemon such as Munchlax, and Hypnosis, which can be useful, despite its terrible accuracy, in dealing with opponents that normally beat Gastly. Pain Split is also a decent option in order to recover HP lost from using Substitute, and works well when using Life Orb, which can be used for extra power; be warned, however – the residual damage will add up fast. Scraggy is a great partner because it can set up on Munchlax, Lickitung and Pawniard. They cover each other's weaknesses too. Timburr can also make a good teammate, setting up on Pawniard because it threatens to OHKO.

    [SET]
    name: Scarfer
    move 1: Shadow Ball
    move 2:
Hidden Power Fighting / Hidden Power Ice
    move 3: Sludge Bomb
    move 4: Trick

    item: Choice Scarf
    ability: Levitate
    nature: Timid / Modest
    evs: 68 HP / 40 Def / 200 SAtk / 200 Spd

    [SET COMMENTS]

Gaslty can use its 3 immunities to come in, or switch in after a KO, and dish out powerful attacks. Shadow Ball and Hidden Power Fighting provide perfect neutral coverage. Sludge Bomb is a great third move, packing more power than Shadow Ball, and should be used against Pokemon who are neutral to both Shadow Ball and Hidden Power Fighting. Trick can be used to cripple enemy Pokemon with an unwanted Choice Scarf.

    [ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

There is myriad of alternative moves that can be used. Hypnosis can be used to put a troublesome Pokemon out of action, perhaps for the remainder of the match. Although it has lost a lot of its power this generation, Explosion can also be used to go out with a bang, hitting Pokemon that can take Gastly's special attacks hard. Choice Scarf Gastly is more easily counterable than non choiced varaints, because it is always locked in to one move. Special Sponges such as Munchlax and Lickitung are immune to Shadow Ball and take little damage from its other moves, setting up on them. Pawniard can switch in on Gastly, x4 resistant to Shadow Ball and immune to Sludge Bomb, and trap Gastly with Pursiut. Once again, Scraggy pairs well with Gastly because it can set up its counters: Munchlax, Lickitung and Pawniard. Timburr works well also, checking the aforementioned Pokemon and Carvanha.

    [Other Options]

Hidden Power Fire can be used instead of Hidden Power Fighting to OHKO Ferroseed. Pain Split can be used on the Substitute set as it loses health quickly thanks to Substitute and Life Orb. Although it has terrible accuracy, Hypnosis is an option. It is always useful to have a member of the opponent's team asleep. If you use it while your opponent switches into a slower, bulky Pokemon, Gastly normally has two shots with it, which increases the odds of it hitting. Although it has lost considerable power in this generation, Explosion can still be used if you want to go out with a bang; not every Pokemon carries Evolution Stone. Sucker Punch is Gastly's most powerful priority attack, which can come in useful against frail, faster Pokemon, such as Abra, Staryu, and other Gastly.

    [Checks and Counters]

Pokemon that outspeed Gastly will give it a hard time. Magby, Elekid, and Diglet are all examples of faster, troublesome opponents. Any priority move that Gastly is not immune to is trouble. Croagunk and Houndour with Sucker Punch, Buizel with Aqua Jet, and Duskull with Shadow Sneak are all considerable threats to Ghastly. Munchlax is a big problem for Gastly as he is immune to Shadow Ball, sponges his other attacks fairly well, and threatens to trap Gastly with Pursuit. The best Gastly can do is burn Munchlax or put it to sleep, but the low accuracy of its status moves makes them very risky. Lickitung sets up on Gastly, because Sludge Bomb and Hidden Power Fighting only 3HKO it. It can get 2 Curses and then Rest off the damage. Pawniard also threatens Gastly with either Pursuit or Sucker Punch, but Gastly can OHKO it on the switch-in with Hidden Power Fighting.

    [Dream World]

Unfortunately, poor Gastly gets nothing from the dream world.

    Done.
I opted not to do a choice set, because there are alot of Pokes that outclass Gastly as a choiced poke.
    Edit: Doing a Scarf set.

Oran should definitely be the first slash on the Substitute set. Being immune to so much priority means that Gastly can make use of high health, so healing yourself rather than hurting yourself is the way to go. Will-O-Wisp shouldn't be there at all, Gastly's terrible defenses can't make use of it at all, and Gastly will always rather be killing stuff. Gastly runs a pretty good choice set too, that should be on there with Shadow Ball, Sludge Bomb, HP Fighting or Ice, and Trick.

    What?

Oran Gastly is terrible. Sure, you can live a priority attack you're immune to, but when they switch in their pokemon that beats Gastly (anything that lives one/two unboosted hits and hits it neutrally), that extra health isn't going to help at all, because Oran doesn't activate after one Substitute. With Life Orb, you can grab a lot of KOs on the pokemon who would have broken your substitute.

Also, mention Sucker Punch somewhere.. It's sort of useful for chipping off the last few hp.

Also, I'd like to see Hypnosis in AC on the Substitute set, not in OC. In two turns, you have an 84% chance to sleep something, so anything slower than you has a pretty good chance of falling asleep, which means that their Gastly counter is neutralized and you have a free chance to Substitute again.

Also, slash Modest on the Scarf set. Gastly has a pretty unique speed tier (at least out of useable LC pokemon), and the extra power helps differentiate it from Missy.

Gastly shouldn't be taking any damage other than residual damage and extremely weak attacks, so Oran should be used to increase whatever survivability this thing has. Life Orb, Substitute, and Weather damage all build up. With hazards you're still going to get those KOs anyway.

    Exactly.

Why not use both and get more KOs?

Gastly can't take attacks at all if it isn't behind a sub and/or immune to the attack. For example, Anorith LO X-Scissor, a 4x resisted move, 3HKOs with SR 100% of the time. Oran Berry is useful for getting more Substitutes, Life Orb is for doing more with each Substitute, and doing more when not behind a Substitute.

    What would you prefer?

Also, I wouldn't mention Buizel or Duskull, they're pretty nonexistent.

Because Sludge Bomb isn't 100% nessecary, it's just there for extra power. Will-O-Wisp is cool for crippling Gligars and Munchlaxs that like to come in.

Sludge Bomb is still the preferred choice though.

Gastly @ Life Orb (200 EVs, Neutral Nature) Sludge Bomb vs Munchlax @ Oran Berry (0/236 EVs, Neutral Nature): 43.3 - 53.3% (13 - 16 HP)
Factoring in the 51% Poison chance from two hits, Sludge Bomb will almost always 2HKO, Will-O-Wisp is just a waste.

Gastly @ Life Orb (200 EVs, Neutral Nature) Shadow Ball vs Gligar @ Evolution Stone (236/0 EVs, Neutral Nature): 46.1 - 57.6% (12 - 15 HP)
    Also a waste.

Just mention Sucker Punch in OC, as priority could be useful in some cases.

You're forgetting Munchlax's Oran Berry and the fact that Gligar outspeeds.

Will-o-wisp isn't totally useless. It's not good enough to be on the set, but it could be cool for mentioning in AC.

It also cripples Stunky, Komatana, Murkrow, and friends. Except Houndour. But Houndour never runs Pursuit.

    [Overview]

Gastly has great Speed and Special Attack, but is held back by poor defenses. It has 3 great immunities;(semicolon),(comma) Normal, Fighting, and Ground, which let Gastly switch in easily and compensates for its low defenses. Explosion's power has been cut, which is a disadvantage for Gastly. Its immunities to various priority moves such as Fake Out, Quick Attack, ExtremeSpeed, Mach Punch, and Vacuum Wave make Gastly very useful in Little Cup a good switch-in to most priority moves in LC. Although it is outclassed by Misdreavus, it has more Special Attack, and secondary Poison typing which can be advantageous for certain teams. Despite being slower and frailer than Misdreavus, Gastly's higher Special Attack and Poison typing still leave a spot in all of our hearts.

    evs:

    [SET COMMENTS]

This is Gastly's most effective set because it can due to its ability to come in on one of its many immunities and easily on its many immunities and resistances and set up a Substitute {actually, Gastly can really only come in on Bug attacks (4x resist) and immunities due to how frail it is}. Behind a Substitute, Gastly can really put the opponent under pressure easily apply pressure to the opponent. The enemy will lose a large chunk of health trying to break the substitute, and in some cases, will have to give one of their Pokemon. The opponent will usually take large amounts of damage getting hit from Gastly behind the Substitute as they try to break it, and in some cases, will even be OHKOed before breaking it. Shadow Ball and Hidden Power Fighting give amazing unresisted coverage,(comma) and hit most Pokemon very hard. Sludge Bomb has poor coverage, but it is more powerful than Shadow Ball,(comma) and can be useful for an extra kick against Pokemon that are neutral to both moves. Oran Berry recovers some health that you will lose from setting up Substitutes. {mention Life Orb too}

Sort of a minor nitpick, but I think Sludge Bomb should be replaced (or at least slashed) with Thunderbolt due to handle Water types better and having generally better coverage.

Well, the common water types are Chinchou, Pururiru, Mantyke, Totodile and Buizel iirc. Gastly hits Pururiru with shadow ball, and totodile and buizel are quite frail and take high damage from Sludge Bomb. I don't know if it's worth mentioning for one Pokemon mate.

Hidden Power Ice can be used to OHKO Gligar. Hidden Power Fire can be used to OHKO Tesshido, but doesn't hit much else, and. Consider that Hidden Power Fighting 2HKO's it anyway. A lot of alternatives can be used in the last slot. Will-O-Wisp can be used to cripple physical pokes, notably Gligar and Munchlax, who give Gastly a hard time. Pain Split is viable because Gastly loses alot of health due to Substitute, and sometimes Life Orb. Hypnosis, with it's terrible accuracy, can be used to put slower pokes to sleep. You can use Life Orb over Oran Berry for extra power.

    [SET]

    move 2:
Hidden Power Fighting / Hidden Power Ice
    move 3: Sludge Bomb
    move 4: Trick
    item: Choice Scarf
    ability: Levitate
    nature: Timid / Modest
    evs:
    68 HP / 40 Def / 200 SAtk / 200 Spd

    [SET COMMENTS]

Gastly makes a better Scarfer than Misdreavus because of its higher Special Attack. It can use its 3 immunities as an to gain opportunities to come in and dish out powerful attacks. Shadow Ball and Hidden Power Fighting provide perfect neutral coverage. Sludge Bomb is a great third move. It has more power than Shadow Ball, and should be used against Pokemon who are neutral to both Shadow Ball and Hidden Power Fighting. Trick can be used to give cripple enemy Pokemon with an unwanted Choice Scarf, which is useful because it hinders a lot of slow, bulky Pokemon that plague the metagame.

    [ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Hidden Power Ice can be used to OHKO Gligar. A Modest nature should be used if you want to hit harder. There is myriad of moves that can be used in the last slot. Will-o-Wisp can burn incoming an Munchlax, or a Gligar if you don't have Hidden Power Ice, and cut their attack. Hypnosis can be used to put a Pokemon to sleep. Explosion can be used to go out with a bang, even though it has lost a lot of it's power this generation.

    [Team Options]

Gastly can fit in nicely on most teams because of its Ground, Normal, and Fighting immunities. It's Poison typing is what separates it from Misdreavus. If you want to use Misdreavus, but feel nothing on your team can take a Toxic, give Gastly a try. It is great on offensive teams for coming in on an immune move, setting up a substitute and dealing out massive damage. With a Choice Scarf, it can outspeed and take out fast Pokemon, or set-up Pokemon that would normally give you a hard time. Zurrugu makes a good partner because it resists all of Gastly's weaknesses, and can use Gastly as setup bait against pursuit pokes like Kotomana and Munchlax. setup on Pokemon aiming Crunch and Pursuit at Ghastly, especially should they have locked themselves with a Choice item.

    [Optional Changes]

Hidden Power Fire can be used instead of Hidden Power Fighting to OHKO Tesshido. Pain Split can be used on the Substitute set as it loses health quickly because of Substitute and Life Orb, and Pain Split can remedy that. Although it has terrible accuracy, Hypnosis is an option. It's always useful to have a member of the opponent's team asleep. If you use it while your opponent switches into a slower, bulky Pokemon, Gastly normally has two shots with it, which increases the odds of it hitting once. Although it has lost considerable power in this generation, Explosion can still be used if you want to go out with a bang. Not every Pokemon carries and Evolution Stone. Sucker Punch is Gastly's most powerful priority attack, which can come in useful against frail, faster pokes, such as Abra, Misdreavus, Staryu, or other Gastly.

    [Counters]

Pokemon that outspeed Gastly will give it a hard time, such as. Gligar, Misdreavus, and Diglet are all examples of fast, troublesome opponents. Any priority that Gastly is not immune to is trouble. Croagunk or Houndour with Sucker Punch, Meditite with Bullet Punch, Buizel with Aqua Jet, and Duskull with Shadow Sneak are all considerable threats to Ghastly examples of this. Munchlax is a big problem for Gastly as he is immune to Shadow Ball, sponges his other attacks fairly well, and threatens to trap Gastly with pursuit. The best Gastly can do is Burn Munchlax or put it to sleep, but the low accuracy these of its status moves makes them very risky options. Lickitung sets up on Gastly, because Sludge Bomb and Hidden Power Fighting only 3hko it. It can get 2 Curses and then Rest off the damage. Kotomana also beats Gastly with either Pursuit or Sucker Punch. But Gastly can OHKO it on a switch-in with Hidden Power Fighting. Zurrugu is a great partner because it can setup on Munchlax, Lickitung and Kotomana. They cover each other's weaknesses too. Dokorra can also make a good teammate. He can set-up on Kotomana because he threatens to OHKO. He can also counter Carvanha, which beats Gastly.

    [Dream World]

Unfortunately, poor Gastly gets nothing from the dream world.
