OU Gastrodon

[OVERVIEW]
By virtue of Gastrodon's modest defenses, solid defensive typing that leaves it with only one weakness, and access to a reliable recovery move, it finds its niche in OU as an answer to special attackers like Tapu Koko, Greninja, Tornadus-T, and Nihilego. While it being a Ground-type that isn't weak to Hidden Power Ice is already a great boon, Storm Drain only adds to its defensive qualities, making it a great answer to Water-types in general, as well as to rain sweepers like Kingdra and Ash-Greninja. Unfortunately, Gastrodon's passiveness and inability to support the team through controlling or setting entry hazards can make it difficult to justify using over other Water- or Ground-types, like Landorus-T, Toxapex, and Tapu Fini. It also struggles with mediocre bulk, especially physically, which makes it difficult for it to take hits from anything besides the special threats it checks.

[SET]
name: Specially Defensive
move 1: Scald
move 2: Recover
move 3: Toxic
move 4: Earth Power
item: Leftovers
ability: Storm Drain
nature: Calm
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Scald deals decent damage and can inflict burns, limiting the effectiveness of physical attacks. Recover is necessary, as it prevents Gastrodon from being worn down and allows it to wall the Pokemon it switches into. Toxic is necessary for wearing down targets Gastrodon cannot do much else to, such as bulky defensive Pokemon like Zapdos, Tangrowth, and Rotom-W. Earth Power is a secondary STAB attack that deals solid damage to the Water-types that resist Scald, like Toxapex, Greninja, and Manaphy. Earthquake can be used instead of Earth Power. Although it can have its power reduced by Will-O-Wisp and doesn't benefit from Storm Drain like Earth Power does, it also deals more damage to targets like Calm Mind Keldeo, Alakazam, Tapu Lele, and Assault Vest Magearna. Sludge Bomb can be used in the last slot to hit Fairy-types such as Tapu Fini much harder while still handling certain Grass-types that tend to switch in, especially Tapu Bulu; it also has a useful poison chance. Ice Beam is an option in the last slot to hit Grass-types super effectively and prevent Gastrodon from being setup fodder for Zygarde or Salamence.

Set Details
========

Leftovers increases Gastrodon's longevity, and Storm Drain gives it a useful immunity to Water-type moves. The EV spread maximizes Special Defense, allowing Gastrodon to take on special threats like Greninja, Ash-Greninja, Nihilego, and Magearna. A Calm nature maximizes Special Defense, but if using Earthquake, a Sassy nature should be used instead. An EV spread of 252 HP / 44 Def / 212 SpD allows Gastrodon to always survive two Secret Swords from Choice Scarf Keldeo after Stealth Rock damage, meaning Gastrodon can switch in on it safely, although the spread makes Gastrodon more vulnerable to special attackers like Greninja. Similarly, a spread with maximized Defense investment can be used to allow Gastrodon to take on physical threats such as Mega Metagross and Landorus-T better. However, it needs a Relaxed nature and nearly maximum Defense investment to always avoid key 2HKOs, such as from offensive Landorus-T's Earthquake, and it loses its ability to check most special threats, which it's better suited for checking due to its typing and ability.

Usage Tips
========

Using Gastrodon is pretty straightforward, as it basically boils down to using Recover to keep Gastrodon's HP high and using attacks and Toxic on the turns where Recover isn't necessary. Gastrodon can switch into special threats such as Tapu Koko, Tornadus-T, and Greninja quite freely and heal off the damage, firing off Scald and Toxic to wear down bulkier foes. It's also a safe answer to common Volt Switch users like Tapu Koko, Magnezone, Zapdos, Rotom-W, and Magearna, and it can easily switch in and block their attempts at gaining momentum or heal off the damage from their main attacks. When using Gastrodon, be wary of Toxic on defensive Pokemon that Gastrodon would otherwise check, such as Heatran. Similarly, scouting for Grass moves can be beneficial, such as Bloom Doom on Heatran.

Team Options
========

Gastrodon typically finds itself on balanced, bulkier teams due to its passive nature. Since it's so weak, it needs a teammate that can consistently deal with and wear down Ferrothorn, Tapu Fini, and Tapu Bulu, all of which check it. Fire-types such as Heatran and Mega Charizard X, Flying-types such as Tornadus-T, and Grass-types such as Mega Venusaur are all solid answers to the Grass-types that trouble Gastrodon. Although Gastrodon is fairly self-sufficient and does resist Stealth Rock, it appreciates entry hazard control to remove Spikes and Toxic Spikes, which can severely hamper its ability to switch in and its general longevity. Latios is a good choice for a Defog user that also handles Mega Venusaur and Mega Charizard Y. Zapdos can Defog and check certain Grass-types like Ferrothorn.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Curse can be used to increase Gastrodon's physical bulk and the power of its Earthquake, allowing it to defeat offensive teams; however, it gives up Toxic and it struggles to sweep due to its vulnerability to status. Clear Smog can be used to ruin setup attempts, which is useful due to Gastrodon's passive nature. However, it's useless against Substitute users and Steel-types. Mirror Coat can surprise some special attackers trying to 2HKO Gastrodon by usually OHKOing back. Gastrodon is a good user of this move thanks to its good HP stat, but it is very prediction reliant and situational.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Grass-types**: Gastrodon cannot deal much damage to most Grass-types with its STAB moves, and threats such as Tapu Bulu, Amoonguss, Tangrowth, Ferrothorn, and Mega Venusaur can easily set up or simply OHKO back with a 4x effective STAB Grass-type attack.

**Pokemon with Grass-type Coverage**: Pokemon that carry Grass-type coverage moves can almost always 2HKO or OHKO Gastrodon. Heatran or Volcanion can run Bloom Doom, which swiftly dispatches Gastrodon. Electric-types like Tapu Koko and Thundurus can sometimes run Grass Knot. Celesteela, which doesn't do much to Gastrodon otherwise, can sometimes carry Giga Drain. Some Pokemon such as Mega Charizard Y, Volcarona, and Manaphy use Grass-type moves as their standard coverage and therefore can also defeat Gastrodon easily.

**Strong Wallbreakers**: Gastrodon's defensive stats aren't the most excellent, especially physically, so powerful attackers such as Mega Metagross, Tapu Lele, and Mega Medicham can break through it.

**Setup Sweepers**: Since Gastrodon is so passive and reliant on Toxic and Scald burns, setup sweepers can easily take advantage of it to set up and break through. Salamence and Zygarde can easily set up Dragon Dances, fearing little besides Ice Beam and Scald burns. If Zygarde has Substitute, it can set up on any Gastrodon lacking Ice Beam with absolutely no fear. Gyarados is similar, as Gastrodon cannot do much damage to it and it only fears Toxic and Scald burns. Quiver Dance sweepers like Volcarona take relatively little after boosting and only fear Toxic. Swords Dance users like Mega Pinsir, Tapu Bulu, and Mega Scizor can set up easily, and Gastrodon needs to get lucky with Scald burns to pose any sort of threat, although it can use Ice Beam or Sludge Bomb to hurt Mega Pinsir and Tapu Bulu. Calm Mind users like Tapu Lele, Suicune, and Keldeo can set up with little fear, not taking much from even Earthquake, although Toxic can put them on a timer.

* Gastrodon's excellent defensive typing leaves it with only one weakness, and a neutrality to Hidden Power Ice makes it a good check to Electric-types like Tapu Koko and Thundurus.
* Storm Drain gives it another immunity and allows it to check Water-types like Keldeo, Rotom-W, Greninja, and most Pokemon found on rain teams.
* Gastrodon has modest defensive stats and excellent HP, which when coupled with Recover make it fairly bulky.
* It's unable to do much against Grass-types like Venusaur, Tapu Bulu, and Ferrothorn.
* Gastrodon has little utility besides walling things and inflicting status, which sometimes makes it hard to justify using over other Water- or Ground-types.
* Despite having Recover, it's prone to being worn down by poison or burn.

Before taking it to QC, make sure the sets are set up as such:

[SET]
name: Physically Defensive
move 1: Scald
move 2: Earthquake / Ice Beam
move 3: Toxic
move 4: Recover
item: Leftovers
ability: Storm Drain
nature: Relaxed
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD

The way they are currently set up are incorrect.

Here's a skeleton of it. Just put the meat in and you'll be fine.

[SET]
name: SET NAME

move 2:
move 3:
move 4:

Made some changes.
  • Curse is now the first set. It's definitely better than straight up defensive now that I've tried it out a little more. I think a physically defensive set is still viable enough to warrant a write-up, though, it's not strictly outclassed by anything. Would like to hear some other people's opinions on this.
  • Formatting was changed to the new format.
  • Mentioned an offensive set in OO, since I saw some people using it on ladder and it was okay.

Overview

You're a smidge too hard on poor Gastrodon. You have 5 lines of cons, and I think you could stand to merge a few of them. I don't think Grass Knot Electric-types needs a line.

*Has little utility besides walling things and inflicting status, which sometimes makes it hard to justify using over other Water or Ground types
Curse prevents it from being completely passive, to be fair. The point about it being vulnerable to status is relevant however, but if you can pull off a Curse, Gastrodon can be surprisingly difficult to take out.

* This set is completely walled by Mantine. It can be removed by Electric-type attacks or worn down by Toxic from a teammate.
You should list examples like lures and hard checks/counters.

In the physically defensive set, you should specify that it can't afford to take powerful hits from physical attackers like Mega Metagross, Landorus-T. Instead, pivoting into a resisted move gives it a much better chance at taking them on.

1/3

you have saved me from 0/3 hell

  • Shaved down the cons while still keeping the important parts
  • Gave some ways to beat Mantine
  • Removed genesect mention
  • Added point about pivoting

* Curse makes you tough to take down by physical attackers, especially those that can't boost their Attack with a move like Swords Dance. It also increases the power of Earthquake, letting you eventually break through defensive Pokemon such as Clefable or Chansey.
You'll never bust through Unaware Clefable, which is pretty relevant to bust through on bulkier teams and something that Gastrodon will never beat one-on-one. You can mention Magic Guard Clefable or some Clefable, but definitely mention Unaware Clefable shuts down Curse somewhere.
* The given EV spread lets Gastrodon check a wider variety of special attackers such as Mega Alakazam without compromising its physical bulk too much.
Would like an example on what exactly Gastrodon can tank from Mega Alakazam, especially since some will use Psyshock and will sometimes be paired with Tapu Lele for Psychic Terrain shenanigans.
* A partner that answers well to Grass types is invaluable, as Gastrodon will often be OHKO'd by a Grass move even with some boosts. A fire type like Heatran or a flying type like Tornadus-Therian can switch in on Grass attacks with ease and threaten the Grass type with their STAB moves.
I would also mention how these two Pokemon pressure Skarmory and Celesteela with a Fire-type attack. Bloom Doom Heatran can also lure and smash through Rotom-W which otherwise can sort of screw around with this set (burn it, etc).

You're also missing things to tackle Mega Charizard Y in here which really fuck up Gastrodon with Solar Beam, immune to Earthquake (outside of Roosting), and lowering Scald's damage with Roost while being immune to burn.
* It can't afford to take powerful unresisted attacks from strong physical threats such as Mega Metagross, Landorus-Therian, or Excadrill, so it's better to pivot in on a resisted attack to avoid potentially getting 2HKO'd.
It's awkward that you mentioned Landorus-Therian as a powerful unresisted attack here, but above you have:
* The given EV spread makes Gastrodon as physically bulky as possible, letting it handle threats like Keldeo better, while also checking weaker physical threats like defensive Landorus-Therian.
??? Probably could clarify things a bit here.
* Gastrodon can run a more offensive set with Special Attack investment to deal considerable damage with Scald and Earth Power while still retaining some of Gastrodon's defensive qualities. It is a mediocre choice, as Gastrodon will almost always need to take a hit before attacking, and its Special Attack is mediocre at best unless it grabs a Storm Drain Boost.
Yeahno IMO. Let's stick to its niche on defensive sets and not its pretty gimmicky offensive sets (I get this was mentioned last gen, but I feel if you're using Gastrodon you should use it for its strengths not for its gimmicks).
* Amnesia can be used on a Curse set but it forces you to run Waterfall, as you only have one space for an attack. This leaves you unable to burn things with Scald which is Gastrodon's main means of pressuring the opponent, and it leaves you walled by Pokemon immune to Water such as Volcanion and opposing Gastrodon.
I'm not liking this being mentioned either to be honest. Gastrodon kind of wants the 4 moves it has and it's kind of strapped. Mirror Coat is even pushing it, but I can at least admit that it can catch a Special Attacker off-guard.
**Grass Types**: Gastrodon cannot deal much damage to most Grass types with its STAB moves, and most Grass types can easily OHKO back with a 4x effective STAB Grass attack.
List examples.
**Pokemon with Grass coverage**: Pokemon that carry Grass type coverage moves can almost always 2HKO or OHKO Gastrodon. Threats such as Tapu Koko, Thundurus, Greninja, Xurkitree, Infernape, Victini, and Thundurus-Therian all can carry Grass moves, and they can lure in Gastrodon before removing it. Some Pokemon such as Mega Charizard-Y and Manaphy use Grass moves as their standard coverage, and as such can also defeat Gastrodon easily.
Some of these mons are incredibly niche (Xurkitree, Thundurus-T) or aren't getting an analysis at all as of this time (Infernape, Victini). Tapu Koko doesn't often run Grass Knot and neither does Greninja (they're there sometimes, but they often will look at Hidden Power Ice (Koko) / Electric or Fire (Greninja) or another coverage move). I think the best Pokemon to mention in here is Heatran of all things because it actually will use Bloom Doom in its sets. Furthermore, Mega Charizard Y will shit on just about every set and only fears Toxic and Earthquake when it Roosts. Manaphy can pack Energy Ball sometimes, and Auto Celesteela can pack Giga Drain as an option. Basically tl;dr version is - list better Pokemon with Grass coverage; especially mons that will run them a little more often than just an afterthought.

I would also mention that Unaware Pokemon like Quagsire and Clefable basically shut down anything Curse Gastrodon can do, though they do not enjoy Toxic either to be fair (though Magic Guard Clefable doesn't necessarily give two shits against the second set anyway).

Implement these and tag me again when you've made the changes.

Nice catch on the Bloom Doom Volcanion.

Implement that little change I mentioned to you in Discord since Chansey and Clefable will beat Gastrodon if they pack Toxic.

So yeah just make Specially Defensive the only set and put Curse in OO. We figured Curse isn't very good in this meta and Specially Defensive checks a lot of current threats.

readytolose you're still working on this btw, right?

I have revamped this analysis, it should be ready for another check.
  • Specially Defensive is now the only set. Curse in OO. Physically Defensive is mentioned in Set Details.
  • Mentioned Earthquake, Ice Beam, and Sludge Bomb in move details. I'm not sure if they are warranted there or in OO. Earthquake does the same stuff as last gen, only CM Sub Keldeo is way less common so it shouldn't be standard, but it's basically interchangeable with Earth Power usually. Ice Beam is mainly for Zygarde. Sludge Bomb can seem like an odd choice but in my experience a lot of players pivot into Fini against Gastrodon, and Sludge Bomb can help wear it down a little faster. The common Grass types don't like it much either: Tangrowth takes solid damage and the poison chance helps wear it down, Tapu Bulu takes a billion, and any other OU grass type you'd rather fish for a scald burn against than use Ice Beam or Sludge Bomb.
  • If you know any good alternate spreads to mention hmu. There's probably a specific physical attack that Gastrodon can be EV'd to take two of without compromising its special bulk.

In intro I'd add that it can be used as a safer electric immunity in comparison to other Ground types because it doesn't fear Ice+Electric coverage like other 4x weak pokemon. You also say that it is "helpless", but it can still burn foes and wear them down with status, so I'd word it as "passive" and momentum sapping

  • If you know any good alternate spreads to mention hmu. There's probably a specific physical attack that Gastrodon can be EV'd to take two of without compromising its special bulk.
* A spread with greater Defense investment can be used to allow Gastrodon to take on physical threats such as Mega Metagross and Landorus-Therian better.
Near max defensive investment with a relaxed nature is needed to avoid the 2HKO from Metagross' Zen Headbutt, Dragon Claw from Zard X, and Earthquake from Adamant Lando-T, while non-boosted SSSkystrike can't OKHO it from full, so you can work out the set.

Usage Tips
========

* Gastrodon can switch into special threats such as Tapu Koko, Thundurus, and Greninja.
* Use Recover to keep Gastrodon's HP high, and use the other moves to chip down the foe on the turns Gastrodon doesn't need to Recover.
* Feel free to scout for Toxic or Grass coverage on Pokemon that typically struggle with Ground-types.
I think you should flesh out this section a bit more. Gastro's typing prevents Volt switch users such as Magearna, Magnezone, Koko, and Rotom from gaining momentum, or threatens them with a loss of momentum if they risk it. Zapdos also can't do anything back to it unless it runs Toxic.
There are a also a lot of important specially attacking mons which Gastro can take advantage of, OHKO, or force out to double or status a switchin. E.g. Heatran without Bloom Doom (but be careful of Toxic), Magnezone, Gengar.

Team Options
========

* With Gastrodon's large weakness to Grass moves, a partner that switches in on Grass attacks from the likes of Serperior, Venusaur, or Tapu Bulu is useful. Fire-types such as Heatran or Mega Charizard-X, Flying-types such as Tornadus-Therian, or Grass-types such as Venusaur are all solid options for such a role.
* Gastrodon is fairly self-sufficient, and it does resist Stealth Rock, but it appreciates hazard control to remove Spikes and Toxic Spikes which can severely hamper its ability to switch in and its general longevity. Latios is a good choice for a Defog user that also handles Venusaur, as well as Mega Charizard Y. Zapdos can Defog and check certain Grass-types like Ferrothorn.
here I'd add that Gastro should mainly used on more bulky or balanced teams, as it generally is a momentum drain due to its passiveness. it needs teammates that can consitently deal with Gastros checks

**Grass-Types**: Gastrodon cannot deal much damage to most Grass-types with its STAB moves, and threats such as Tapu Bulu, Tangrowth, Ferrothorn, and Mega Venusaur can easily OHKO back with a 4x effective STAB Grass attack.
Ferrothorn can also set up spikes against it with little repercussions, which can hinder gastros ability to avoid 2hkos.

other small stuff:
Suicune stalls its PP out with pressure and subs

It takes on LO Tornadus-T with the SpD set, I'd actually put that over Thundurus which isn't really that common either
252 SpA Life Orb Tornadus-Therian Hurricane vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Gastrodon: 169-200 (39.6 - 46.9%)

and you could stress a bit more that it's setup fodder for DD Mence, Zygarde, Pinsir, Bulu, so has to bank on burn, then QD Phero, Volcarona, DD Gyara, mons that set spikes, because it is so weak and passive

I read this over and its solid and pretty much on point. One thing I would change is the EV spread should be changed to 248 HP / 44 Def / 216 SpD. With Keldeo being more meta again you want the 44 Def EVs to help you avoid the 2HKO from Scarf Keldeo's Secret Sword without jeopardizing any the ability to check anything you'd check normally. Obviously this spread will lose to Specs but Specs isn't common enough to warrant changing to full Defensive.

You can also mention that you are able to check Scarf Hoopa sets with this spread as shown by Blunder v TheThorn in SPL.

Oh Amoonguss mention deserves as well when talking about grass types.

I think everything else is fine. Make this change and explain what this does and consider this qc 3/3.

Edit: we talked on discord more about this. so make the changes we mentioned on discord and your good

GP 1/1

[OVERVIEW]
(i moved the order around a bit, hope that's ok)

* Gastrodon's excellent defensive typing leaves it with only one weakness, and a neutrality to Hidden Power Ice makes it a good check to Electric-types like Tapu Koko and Thundurus.
* Storm Drain gives it another immunity, (RC) and allows it to check Water-types like Keldeo, Rotom-W, Greninja, and most Pokemon things found on rain teams.
* Gastrodon has modest defensive stats and excellent HP, (AC) which when coupled with Recover make it fairly bulky.

[SET]
name: Specially Defensive
move 1: Scald
move 2: Recover
move 3: Toxic
move 4: Earth Power
item: Leftovers
ability: Storm Drain
nature: Calm
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

* Scald deals decent damage and can inflict burns, limiting the effectiveness of physical attacks.
* Recover prevents Gastrodon from being worn down and allows it to wall the Pokemon it switches into.
* Toxic is necessary for wearing down targets Gastrodon cannot do much else to, such as bulky defensive Pokemon and threats that don't care as much about Scald burns.
* Earth Power is a secondary STAB attack that deals solid damage to the Water-types that resist Scald, like Toxapex, Greninja, and Manaphy.
* Earthquake can be used over Earth Power. Although it can have its power reduced by Will-O-Wisp and doesn't benefit from Storm Drain like Earth Power does, it also deals more damage to targets like Calm Mind Keldeo, Alakazam, Tapu Lele, and Assault Vest Magearna.
* Sludge Bomb can be used in the last slot to hit Fairy-types such as Tapu Fini much harder while still handling certain Grass-types who that tend to switch in, especially Tapu Bulu; it also has and having a useful poison chance.
* Ice Beam can be used in the last slot to hit Grass-types super effectively and prevent Gastrodon from being setup fodder for Zygarde or Salamence.

Set Details
========

* Leftovers increases Gastrodon's longevity, and Storm Drain gives it a useful immunity to Water-type moves.
* The EV spread maximizes Special Defense, allowing Gastrodon to take on special threats like Greninja, Ash-Greninja, Nihilego, and Magearna.
* If using Earthquake, a Sassy nature should be used.
* An EV spread of 252 HP / 44 Def / 212 SpD allows Gastrodon to always live survive two Scarf Keldeo Secret Swords from Choice Scarf Keldeo after Stealth Rock damage, meaning Gastrodon can letting it switch in on it safely, although it the spread makes Gastrodon more vulnerable to special attackers like Greninja.
* A spread with greater Defense investment can be used to allow Gastrodon to take on physical threats such as Mega Metagross and Landorus-T better. However, it needs a Relaxed nature and nearly maximum Defense investment to always avoid key 2HKOs, such as from offensive Landorus-T's Earthquake.

Usage Tips
========

* Gastrodon can switch into special threats such as Tapu Koko, Tornadus-T, and Greninja.
* It's a safe answer to common Volt Switch users like Tapu Koko, Magnezone, Zapdos, Rotom-W, and Magearna, and it can easily switch in and and block their attempts at gaining momentum.
* Use Recover to keep Gastrodon's HP high, and use the other moves to chip down the foe on the turns Gastrodon doesn't need to Recover.
* Feel free to scout for Toxic or Grass-type coverage on Pokemon that typically struggle with Ground-types, such as Heatran.

Team Options
========

* Gastrodon typically finds itself on balanced, bulkier teams due to its passive nature. Since it's so weak, it needs a teammate that can consistently deal with checks that it struggles to wear down, like Ferrothorn, Tapu Fini, and Tapu Bulu. (i'm assuming these three are examples of checks, not teammates? can you list of teammates then? or is that the below bullet?)
* With Gastrodon's large weakness to Grass-type moves, a partner that switches in on Grass-type attacks from the likes of Serperior, Venusaur, and Tapu Bulu is essential. Fire-types such as Heatran and Mega Charizard X, Flying-types such as Tornadus-Therian, and Grass-types such as Venusaur are all solid options for such a role.
* Gastrodon is fairly self-sufficient, (RC) and it does resist Stealth Rock, but it appreciates hazard control to remove Spikes and Toxic Spikes, (AC) which can severely hamper its ability to switch in and its general longevity. Latios is a good choice for a Defog user that also handles Venusaur, as well as Mega Charizard Y. (is Mega Char Y an example of a Defogger or an example of something Latios can handle? if the former, change it to ", as is Mega Charizard Y". if the latter, change to "also handles Venusaur and Mega Charizard Y") Zapdos can Defog and check certain Grass-types like Ferrothorn.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

* Curse can be used to increase its Gastrodon's physical bulk and the power of its Earthquake, allowing it to defeat offensive teams; (ASC) however, (AC) it gives up Toxic and it struggles to sweep due to its vulnerability to status.
* Clear Smog ruins setup attempts, which is useful due to Gastrodon's passive nature. However, (AC) it's useless against Substitutes and Steel-types.
* Mirror Coat can surprise some special attackers who trying to 2HKO Gastrodon by usually OHKOing back. Gastrodon is a good user of this move thanks to its good HP stat, but it is very prediction reliant and situational.

Checks and Counters
===================

Heatran or Volcanion can have run Bloom Doom, (AC) which swiftly dispatches Gastrodon. Electric-types like Tapu Koko and Thundurus can sometimes have run Grass Knot. Celesteela, which doesn't do much to Gastrodon otherwise, can sometimes carry Giga Drain. Some Pokemon such as Mega Charizard Y, Volcarona, and Manaphy use Grass-type moves as their standard coverage, (RC) and as such therefore can also defeat Gastrodon easily.

**Strong Wallbreakers**: Gastrodon's defensive stats aren't the most excellent, especially on the physically side, so it can be broken through by powerful attackers such as Mega Metagross, Tapu Lele, and Mega Pinsir.

Quiver Dancers like Volcarona and Pheromosa take relatively little after boosting and only fear Toxic.

[OVERVIEW]
By virtue of Gastrodon's modest defenses, solid defensive typing that leaves it with only one weakness, and access to a reliable recovery move, it finds its niche in OU as an answer to special attackers like Tapu Koko, Greninja, Tornadus-T, (add comma) and Nihilego. While it being a Ground-type that isn't weak to Hidden Power Ice is already a great boon, Storm Drain only adds to its defensive qualities, making it a great answer to Water-types in general, as well as to rain sweepers like Kingdra and Ash-Greninja. Unfortunately, Gastrodon's passiveness and inability to support the team through controlling or setting entry hazards can make it difficult to justify using over other Water- or Ground-types, like Landorus-T, Toxapex, or Tapu Fini. It also struggles with mediocre bulk, especially physically on the physical side, which makes it difficult for it to take hits from anything besides the special threats it checks.

Ice Beam can be used in the last slot to hit Grass-types super effectively and prevent Gastrodon from being setup fodder for Zygarde or Salamence.

Set Details
========

However, it needs a Relaxed nature and nearly maximum Defense investment to always avoid key 2HKOs, such as from offensive Landorus-T's Earthquake, and it loses its ability to check most special threats. Gastrodon is better suited for checking special attackers in the metagame anyways due to its typing and ability.

Usage Tips
========
