Genesect [GP 2/2]

Status
Not open for further replies.

[OVERVIEW]

Genesect is an effective momentum gainer and revenge killer in the Ubers metagame. This is because, when coupled with Download, Genesect's U-turn hits extremely hard, allowing it to keep offensive pressure up and gain momentum at the same time. Download also gives most of Genesect's moves more of an edge. Genesect is also useful for its ability to revenge kill both Latios and Latias with relative ease, which is almost invaluable for offensive teams. Latios and Latias's popularity also harms Genesect in a way, as the ease of Defog support weakens one of its niches as a solid team member on Sticky Web archetypes. Genesect has severe problems with Primal Groudon and Ho-Oh, two very prevalent Pokemon in the metagame, hindering its effectiveness. Furthermore, the slow, bulky metagame means that Genesect has a somewhat harder time denting threats with U-turn, but the decrease in Choice Scarf users gives Genesect a more defined niche as a revenge killer.

Moves
========

A strong U-turn is one of Genesect's defining traits, being able to apply offensive pressure and gain momentum at the same time. Iron Head serves as Genesect's secondary STAB option, being able to revenge kill Mega Diancie and some Xerneas variants. Ice Beam is the primary method for Genesect to do damage to Primal Groudon (after a Download boost); it is also able to revenge kill a boosted Rayquaza and is a nice option against other Ground-types and Dragon-types. Explosion has immense utility on most teams, as Genesect can do massive damage to threats such as Extreme Killer Arceus and Ho-Oh, especially with a Download boost, and it prevents any entry hazard removal moves from occurring. If the team requires some form of priority, Extreme Speed is very useful against Geomancy Xerneas and other sweepers that are naturally faster than Genesect, and it can have slight cleaning potential after a Download boost. Blaze Kick can be opted for if Steel-types such as Ferrothorn and Klefki present a problem for the team, but it has the drawback of making Genesect become massive Primal Groudon bait if Ice Beam is removed.

Set Details
========

A Naive nature is preferred on Genesect in order to sponge priority attacks better, but Hasty is required on sets with Extreme Speed or Blaze Kick due to legality issues. The above spread allows Genesect to hit hard physically with U-turn while giving its Special Attack an extra point after a Download boost. If you want more offense or bulk on Genesect, a spread of either 252 Atk / 72 SpA / 184 Spe or 72 HP / 248 Atk / 8 SpA / 184 Spe with a Hasty or Naive nature can outspeed all Choice Scarf base 90 Speed Pokemon while having the option of hitting harder with Ice Beam or taking hits from priority such as Extreme Speed better.

Usage Tips
========

Due to the relative freedom of being able to spam U-turn, this is usually a player's go-to option in favorable matchups or against one of Genesect's checks and counters, so try to utilize as much momentum as possible and think smart when switching to specific Pokemon. Though Genesect does have coverage options, it is primarily a revenge killer, so either pick off threats with the appropriate coverage move or U-turn to a different Pokemon to capitalize on momentum. Genesect can also function well as a lead against specific Pokemon, as U-turn can hurt some leads well enough to limit them to one layer of entry hazards by letting Genesect switch to a Pokemon that can revenge kill it with priority or a coverage move. Using Genesect as a Geomancy Xerneas switch-in is not recommended due to Genesect's subpar bulk, so be careful against those variants unless it either has not boosted or is at low enough HP for Genesect to pick it off with a Download-boosted Extreme Speed.

Team Options
========

Entry hazard support is very useful for Genesect to utilize offensive pressure with U-turn, so entry hazard setters such as Primal Groudon, Klefki, Dialga, and Forretress are very solid teammates. Offensive users of Rapid Spin or Defog such as Forretress, Latios, Latias, and Giratina-O can also assist Genesect by minimizing the residual damage it takes from entry hazards. Zekrom forms a very solid VoltTurn core with Genesect and is able to soft check Ho-Oh, though you should be wary of Primal Groudon when using this core. Wallbreakers and sweepers love having the multiple opportunities to switch in that Genesect can provide, so pairing Genesect with offensive threats such as Extreme Killer Arceus, Xerneas, Mega Salamence, and Rayquaza is extremely beneficial. Despite the archetype being somewhat inefficient due to the prevalence in entry hazard removal, Genesect functions well in Sticky Web teams, as it can pressure Latios and Latias while keeping hazards up with Explosion, so setters of Sticky Web such as Smeargle can work great with Genesect.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Genesect's movepool allows it to run multiple moves and sets. A Choice Band set capitalizes on Download and strong U-turns or Explosion to dent bulkier threats, including most of Genesect's checks, but loses the opportunity of revenge killing most of the tier outside of Extreme Speed. Shift Gear can also be used to let Genesect clean up most teams while hitting hard, but it limits Genesect's offensive utility, needs more support due to Genesect's poor bulk, and locks it into a Hasty nature, leaving it vulnerable to priority. Bug Buzz is Genesect's only option for a special Bug-type STAB move, but it pales in usefulness to U-turn and can be punished easily if Genesect is locked into it via a Choice item. Flamethrower is an option over Blaze Kick if physically defensive Steel-types prove to be more of a problem on the team Genesect is on. Thunder can 2HKO Ho-Oh after a Download boost and has utility against Primal Kyogre, but Genesect becomes even more vulnerable to Primal Groudon as a result. Magic Coat can be useful on Genesect to keep burns and paralysis away from it, as well as being efficient against dedicated hyper offense leads in order to shut them down almost completely.

Checks & Counters
===================

**Bulky Fire-types**: Bulky Fire-types such as Primal Groudon and Ho-Oh are the biggest threats to Genesect, as they soak up even Download-boosted U-turns along with most of Genesect's coverage moves and are able to threaten it massively with a 4x super effective STAB move. Provided Stealth Rock is not up, Ho-Oh can repeatedly threaten Genesect thanks to Regenerator and Sacred Fire.

**Steel-types**: Dialga, Aegislash, and Skarmory can switch into a vast majority of Genesect's coverage options and either set up entry hazards on it or wear it down with attacks. Aegislash in particular can punish most of Genesect's Choice-locked attacks with King's Shield.

**Entry Hazards**: Genesect is only immune to Toxic Spikes and takes normal damage from all other entry hazards, so its health is whittled down considerably every time it comes in, even to the point where Genesect itself can be revenge killed by priority attacks.

**Bulky Attackers**: Pokemon that can soak up Genesect's U-turn and fire off extremely powerful attacks can threaten both Genesect and its team; offensively oriented Pokemon such as Kyogre, Dialga, and Primal Groudon accurately represent this trait.

**Status**: Though it is immune to Toxic, Genesect is extremely vulnerable to both burn and paralysis, so a stray Will-O-Wisp or Thunder Wave can hinder Genesect's effectiveness to the point of being near-dead weight.

Overview
########

  • Yummy yummy U-turn
  • Download boosts hit hard af
  • Soul Dew Latis are back, giving Genesect more targets
  • PDon and Ho-Oh are evil things
  • Bulkier meta and decline of Choice Scarf users put Genesect in a weird situation
  • Lost its Sticky Web niche :/

Choice Scarf
########
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: U-turn
move 2: Iron Head
move 3: Ice Beam
move 4: Explosion / Extremespeed
ability: Download
item: Choice Scarf
evs: 248 Atk / 8 SpA / 252 Spe
nature: Naive / Hasty

Moves
========

  • U-turn is nice
  • Iron Head hits Fairies like a mofo; flinchhax is nice too
  • Ice Beam OHKO's Ray after SR (without Download Boost), 3HKOs offensive PDon (with Download boost) and is good in general against other bulky Grounds and offensive Dragon-types
  • Explosion is a great last ditch move to check EKiller, do actual damage to Ho-Oh, and keep hazards up by preventing Defog or Rapid Spin from occurring. Also does insane damage with a Download boost
  • ESpeed has a lot of general utility, can pick off GeoXern and +1 MegaMence (from low health obv), while giving its team a priority user
  • Blaze Kick is nice for Steel-types, but Gene gets borked by PDon if Ice Beam is foregone

Set Details
========

  • Naive lets Genesect take priority better, while Hasty must be used in conjunction with Blaze Kick or Extremespeed due to legality
  • 248 Atk / 8 SpA / 252 Spe gives Genesect an extra point in SpA after a Download boost, while letting it hit hard and fast with U-turn
  • An alternate spread of 252 Atk / 72 SpA / 184 with Hasty / Naive can outspeed Scarfed base 90's while hitting a bit harder with Ice Beam

Usage Tips
========

  • U-turn if a matchup is favorable against an opponent (or if Gene is forced out), U-turn to the appropriate Pokemon to deal with the situation
  • Scarf Genesect is a revenge killer and momentum producer, not a full-out attacker, so revenge kill threats with the corresponding coverage move or U-turn out to something else
  • Be cautious of Choice locking into a move that is not named U-turn
  • Scarf Genesect can be a half-decent lead, as a Download-boosted U-turn can dent a dedicated lead hard enough for another team member to finish it off with their own priority
  • For a Steel-type, Genesect isn't an outstanding GeoXern check (even Hasty can get OHKOd by a +2 Moonblast after SR), so be very cautious against it unless it is at mildly low health and Genesect has Extremespeed

Team Options
========

  • Offensive hazard setters (PDon, Dialga, Keys, etc.)
  • Defog (Gira-O and Latis, Arceus is iffy since it's more of a defensive mon)
  • Volt Switch (Zekrom is the best option, soft checks Ho-Oh, but be careful of PDon weakness)
  • Sweepers + Wallbreakers (Ray, MMence, Xerneas, EKiller, you know the drill)
  • Sticky Web setters (Smeargle can also use Explosion to keep hazards up)

Other Options
########

  • Choice Band
  • Shift Gear
  • Bug Buzz
  • Flamethrower
  • Thunder
  • Magic Coat
  • Techno Blast lel

PROBLEMS

AHEAD OF HIS TIME
Only scarf man nothing else is viable for gene this generation (off the top of my head maybe a assault vest set, but not ran any calcs or anything etc).

I personally thinks it's worse mentioning that Genesect functions best inside of trick room utilising it as a nice way to pressure lati if you play it aggressively and also by booming on bulky things like support accrues to block Defog.

Otherwise looks fine to me 2/3

Did this. Writing up now.

shouldn't blaze kick be oo? it's mentioned in moves but there's no space for it.
You can list moves that aren't specifically slashed in Moves rather than placing it in OO, which Blaze Kick fills. Take Waterfall (pls make me remove this) on CB Ray's analysis for example. It's not specifically an option in the move slashes, but it's not completely out of the question for it to OHKO max HP/max Def PDon in one blow.

will qc this when not drunk but uh is dragon dance rayquaza that common? genesect cannot revenge +1 salamence with ice beam and it has no other targets, i honestly feel espeed and beam should ber slashed and explosion (great on HO to bop defog and genesect "checks") should be unslashed. also dd rayquaza doesn't like explosion or even iron head x D

All of your points are pretty much valid, though having Ice Beam is nice for predicting Mence switch-ins (the argument goes both ways ik) and not being useless against PDon outside of Explosion. That being said, I'm probably just going to stop whining and slash ESpeed with Ice Beam anyway. I like going boom too :)

ice beam is the only way you hurt groudon i guess

Yea I still support this slashing, good job drunk me. Ice Beam does 0 to Groudon without Special Attack boost and spamming Ice Beam instead of U-turn at +1 just to chip groudon isn't great. still worth first slash over espeed, explosion is very cool on hazard stacking teams if your opponent gets defog arceus in on a genesect switch somehow.

QC 3/3

Set Details
========

Usage Tips
========

Due to the relative freedom of being able to spam U-turn, this is usually a player's go-to option in favorable matchups or against one of Genesect's checks and counters, so try to utilize as much momentum as possible and think smart when switching to specific Pokemon. Though Genesect does have coverage options, (spacing) it is primarily a revenge killer, so either pick off threats with the appropriate coverage move or U-turn to a different Pokemon to capitalize on momentum.

========

Other Options
=============

Bug Buzz is Genesect's only option for a special Bug-types Bug-type STAB move, (AC) but it pales (less run-on-esque) in usefulness to U-turn and can be punished easily if Genesect is locked into it via a Choice item. Flamethrower is an option over Blaze Kick if physically defensive Steel-types prove to be more of a problem on the team Genesect is on. Thunder can 2HKO Ho-Oh after a Download boost and has utility against Primal Kyogre, but it makes Genesect becomes even more vulnerable to Primal Groudon as a result. Magic Coat can be useful on Genesect to keep burns and paralysis away from it, as well as being efficient against dedicated hyper offense leads in order to shut them down almost completely.

Checks & Counters
===================

Provided Stealth Rock is not up, Ho-Oh can repeatedly threaten Genesect with thanks to (Regenerator doesn't threaten it directly) Regenerator and Scared Sacred (lol) Fire.

**Steel-types**: Dialga, Aegislash, and Skarmory can switch into a vast majority of Genesect's coverage options and either set up entry hazards on it or wear it down with attacks. Aegislash in particular can withstand punish most of Genesect's Choice-locked attacks with King's Shield.
