GENMONS

Welcome to Genmons! Genmons is a meta in which every Pokemon can learn every move introduced in the same generation as it was, and only those moves. For example, Talonflame can use Dragon Ascent and Precipice Blades (!), but not Flare Blitz.

RULES
Mechanic: Any Pokemon can learn any move that was introduced in the same generation as it was (except for the moves that are banned), and only those moves. Pokemon can have moves from their pre-evolution's generation as well, but not from their evolution's. For example, Chansey can learn Stealth Rock (a Gen IV move) through Happiny, but it cannot learn Spikes (a Gen II move) through Blissey. If Pokemon have an alternate form introduced in a different generation, they do not get moves from that generation, i.e Mega Pokemon do not get Gen VI moves, Pichu does not get Gen IV moves through the Spiky-Eared Pichu, etc. You can't use unreleased moves like Light of Ruin and Thousand Arrows.

Clauses and Bans: Genmons follows ORAS OU clauses and bans, with a couple of exceptions:

The following Pokemon are banned:
  • Kyurem-Black
  • Sylveon
The following moves are banned:
  • Spore
  • Dark Void
  • Belly Drum
  • Tail Glow
  • Quiver Dance
  • Shift Gear
  • Shell Smash
  • Sketch

Genmons is playable through challenge on rom.psim.us, or through custom game on any server.

See the following post for various resources to help you get into Genmons!

Resources
List of viable moves from each generation
note: in the lists of viable moves, the moves in italics are weaker, more niche options that may still be viable on some sets

Gen 1
Gen I is undoubtedly one of the most diverse generations, offering a wide range of offensive and support options. Reliably recovery and a wealth of good status moves, including Thunder Wave, Toxic, and dual screens allow Gen I Pokemon to viably pull off a variety of defensive sets, and a huge diversity of coverage moves on both the physical and special side, in addition to Swords Dance, make Gen I a good place to be for any offensive Pokemon. However, Gen I does severely lack in options for quite a few types; notably, Ghost, Bug, Fairy, Poison, and Steel Pokemon in Gen I find themselves without any decent STAB options.

Bite, Body Slam, Bonemerang, Counter, Crabhammer, Double Edge, Drill Peck, Earthquake, Explosion, Fire Punch, High Jump Kick, Ice Punch, Low Kick, Pin Missile, Quick Attack, Rock Slide, Seismic Toss, Thunder Punch, Waterfall

Blizzard, Fire Blast, Flamethrower, Hydro Pump, Ice Beam, Petal Dance, Psychic, Solar Beam, Surf, Thunder, Thunderbolt, Tri Attack

Disable, Glare, Growth, Haze, Leech Seed, Light Screen, Lovely Kiss, Recover, Reflect, Rest, Soft-Boiled, Substitute, Swords Dance, Thunder Wave, Transform, Toxic, Whirlwind

Gen II
Gen II is easily one of the best generations for support Pokemon; Gen II's selection of support moves includes Rapid Spin, Spikes, Heal Bell, Encore, Baton Pass, and all of the weather setting moves bar Hail. As well, it offers reliable recovery in Milk Drink, which all allows Gen II to support a wide variety of defensive sets. However, Gen II is pretty barren in terms of offensive options. It does offer a few unique offensive moves like Pursuit, Hidden Power, and Extreme Speed, but otherwise offensive Gen II Pokemon have to rely on limited and mostly weak coverage options. In addition, Gen II doesn't have any set-up moves besides the somewhat niche Curse.

Cross Chop, Crunch, Dynamic Punch, Extreme Speed, Flail, Frustration, Iron Tail, Mach Punch, Megahorn, Outrage, Pursuit, Rapid Spin, Return, Reversal, Sacred Fire

Aeroblast, Ancient Power, Giga Drain, Hidden Power, Mirror Coat, Shadow Ball, Sludge Bomb, Zap Cannon

Baton Pass, Curse, Destiny Bond, Encore, Heal Bell, Milk Drink, Moonlight, Morning Sun, Pain Split, Perish Song, Protect, Rain Dance, Sandstorm, Sleep Talk, Spikes, Sunny Day, Synthesis

Gen III
Gen III is pretty solid in most regards. It offers a decent variety of offensive moves, although some types are forced to rely on fairly mediocre STAB moves. As well, it provides some potent options for defensive Pokemon with Will-o-Wisp, Wish, and Aromatherapy. Where Gen III really shines is in its great assortment of set-up moves, providing access to Calm Mind, Bulk Up, and Dragon Dance.

Aerial Ace, Blaze Kick, Brick Break, Bullet Seed, Dragon Claw, Endeavor, Facade, Fake Out, Focus Punch, Icicle Spear, Knock Off, Leaf Blade, Meteor Mash, Rock Blast, Sky Uppercut, Superpower, Volt Tackle

Eruption, Extrasensory, Heat Wave, Hyper Voice, Muddy Water, Overheat, Psycho Boost, Signal Beam, Water Spout, Weather Ball

Aromatherapy, Bulk Up, Calm Mind, Cosmic Power, Dragon Dance, Hail, Magic Coat, Memento, Slack Off, Taunt, Trick, Will-o-Wisp, Wish, Yawn

Gen IV
When Gen IV brought the Physical/Special split it also introduced a ton of new offensive moves, to make sure that each type had a viable physical and special move. Due to this, Gen IV Pokemon have access to a huge variety of coverage moves, making them extremely dangerous attackers. In addition, Gen IV also introduced the ever-important Stealth Rock and Defog, as well as heaps of other useful moves like Toxic Spikes, Heal Order, Nasty Plot, and U-turn, meaning it can support a huge variety of effective sets.

Aqua Jet, Aqua Tail, Attack Order, Avalanche, Brave Bird, Bullet Punch, Close Combat, Drain Punch, Fire Fang, Flare Blitz, Gunk Shot, Gyro Ball, Head Smash, Ice Fang, Ice Shard, Iron Head, Metal Burst, Night Slash, Poison Jab, Power Whip, Psycho Cut, Seed Bomb, Shadow Claw, Shadow Sneak, Stone Edge, Sucker Punch, Thunder Fang, U-turn, Wood Hammer, Zen Headbutt

Air Slash, Aura Sphere, Bug Buzz, Charge Beam, Dark Pulse, Discharge, Draco Meteor, Dragon Pulse, Earth Power, Energy Ball, Flash Cannon, Focus Blast, Grass Knot, Judgment, Lava Plume, Leaf Storm, Magma Storm, Ominous Wind, Power Gem, Seed Flare, Spacial Rend, Vacuum Wave

Defog, Gravity, Heal Order, Heart Swap, Lunar Dance, Magnet Rise, Nasty Plot, Rock Polish, Roost, Stealth Rock, Switcheroo, Tailwind, Toxic Spikes, Trick Room

Gen V
Gen V is a haven for offensive Pokemon, providing a wealth of high powered moves across a variety of types, including V-Create, Techno Blast, and Blue Flare, which goes well with the huge diversity of powerful offensively inclined Gen V Pokemon. Defensive Pokemon in Gen V really get the short end of the stick however, with no reliable recovery and absolutely no relevant support or status spreading moves.

Acrobatics, Bolt Strike, Circle Throw, Dragon Tail, Drill Run, Dual Chop, Flame Charge, Foul Play, Fusion Bolt, Gear Grind, Head Charge, Heart Stamp, Heat Crash, Heavy Slam, Horn Leech, Icicle Crash, Razor Shell, Sacred Sword, Smack Down, Storm Throw, V-Create

Acid Spray
, Blue Flare, Clear Smog, Electro Ball, Fiery Dance, Final Gambit, Frost Breath, Grass Pledge, Hex, Hurricane, Inferno, Night Daze, Psystrike, Relic Song, Scald, Searing Shot, Secret Sword, Sludge Wave, Stored Power, Techno Blast, Volt Switch

Autotomize, Coil, Cotton Guard, Reflect Type, Work Up

Gen VI
While Gen VI does have quite a few interesting moves, like Geomancy, Sticky Web, and Parting Shot, it generally suffers from a huge lack of depth. Gen VI introduced less moves than any other generation, and this leaves Gen VI Pokemon lacking in coverage moves and with just generally very limited options. While there are a few Pokemon that can make the weak Gen VI movepool work, for the most part Gen VI is just kinda mediocre.

Diamond Storm, Dragon Ascent, Flying Press, Land's Wrath, Nuzzle, Petal Blizzard, Play Rough, Power-Up Punch, Precipice Blades, Water Shuriken

Boomburst, Freeze-Dry, Hyperspace Hole, Moonblast, Mystical Fire, Oblivion Wing, Steam Eruption

Geomancy, King's Shield, Parting Shot, Spiky Shield, Sticky Web, Topsy-Turvy

awesome idea! but you should probably ban sketch on anything other than smeargle. On another note, gen6 looks to be very good at support with access to moves like sticky web, king's shield, spiky shield, topsy turvy, parting shot, and nuzzle

R.I.P Azumarill and Dragonite

Some Interesting things:
Simple + Shell Smash + Stored Power Swoobat: Wow this thing will be powerful, I believe it was banned from Alphabet Cup
Shell Smash + Defiant Bisharp and Braviary: These two are going to be pretty powerful, +4 Atk Shell Smash is no laughing matter
Competitive Gothtielle: Similar to Swoobat, this thing will get a pretty nice Stored Power + Shell Smash combo, not as good though

im pretty sure swoobat and sylveon were banned from alphabet/stabmons respectively for very good reasons ________@

inb4heartswapriolunewmeta

(actually riolu might be legit, idklol it still has copycat and prankster and can steal boosts with heart swap and stuff)

Defiant won't activate on self given stat drops, so SS is just +2

Some more interesting things I found:
No Guard + Lovely Kiss + High Jump Kick Machamp: Dear lord, this thing will be brutal
Skill Swap Slaking: Basically the alphabet cup version
Explosion Mega Pinsir: Jesus Christ this thing is going to be powerful, can somebody do some calcs just to show exactly how powerful this thing Is?

*outclassed by moves in other gens (I gave up on these after gen 3)

As of now, Gen V looks the strongest in terms of set-up moves, but Gen IV has almost perfect coverage. Gen I has spore, so basically anything that evolves from a gen I pokemon gets spore (*cough* spore geomancy boomburst sylveon *cough*)
Gen III is probably the weakest, although they are still pretty strong with stuff like dragon dance, psycho boost, overheat (spinda hype), Water Spout, and Eruption.
Gen II gets BellySpeed (ursaring oh god).

Basically this is STABmons with even more broken stuff.

Or you could go dynamic punch for maximum hax-iness.

Edit: lol nvm I'm dumb

Also, everything from gen1 gets Spore, it might be best on fire/flying/ice types to keep grass types away.

Meloetta....Shell Smash.....Relic song....piourette meloetta.....Espeed....gg
And In both STABmons and Genmons....Scrappy ShellSmash ESpeed Stoutland....this thing was a monster in STABmons and here it comes in another meta....
uhhh Extreme Speed is a gen 2 move, Meloetta and Stoutland are gen 5 Pokemon.

I was thinking this would be a cool idea at first, but it seems like it will be very similar to STABmons. Boomburst + Geomancy Sylveon, BD + ES Ursaring, Shell Smash + Techno Blast + Psystrike / Stored Power Meloetta (which gets Secret Sword now), BD + ES Porygon-Z, and Transform Chansey look like they will be huge threats again

Rhyperior seems to be one of my favorites here, as he can be a great physical defensive supporter, since he has access to Roost, Stealth Rock, Healing Wish, Lunar Dance, Defog, Switcheroo, Tailwind, and Toxic Spikes from 4th gen, and from 1st gen, he has Glare, Disable, Leech Seed, dual screens, Toxic, and SPORE! I think I've found my physical wall.

Sing hits through Substitute, use that.

Skill Swap Slaking: Basically the alphabet cup version

252 Atk Aerilate Mega Pinsir Explosion vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Mega Aggron: 144-170 (41.8 - 49.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
weak af.
252 Atk Aerilate Mega Pinsir Explosion vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar: 279-328 (81.5 - 95.9%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
Sounds cool as a last ditch to obliterate everything in its path.

I would like to raise awareness about a **very** dangerous threat that should be considered on every single competitive team. Its face is like a train wreck. It will single-handedly rip apart stall, offense, and whatever new type of strategy you happen to come up with. The pokemon I am talking about is:

Spinda @ Safety Goggles (b/c spore sucks)
Ability: Contrary
EVs: you dont need evs to rek people
Nature: ^
- Psycho Boost
- Overheat
- Superpower
- Slack Off

This thing is the definition of scary. You look up Spinda in the dictionary, and it won't even be there; you know why? Because the thing was too scary for a dictionary that was supposed to be for all ages. Oh, those safety goggles blocking your spore? Well your response might be: "HUEHUE ILL JUST KNOCK THEM OFF". Knock off those goggles, and you'll be met with the most hideous eyes you've ever met, enough to make you cry the pee you've been holding for three hours out of your own, scarred, eyes. And you thought that one basilisk from the Chamber Potty Secrets movie was powerful? Spinda EATS basilisks. Alright, now I'm gonna get into what happens when it doesn't kill you with its stare. Psycho Boost just kills everything that stands in your way. As you're sacrificing all your pokemon in a futile attempt at trying to get its special attack to drop, Spinda is only getting more and more powerful until it finally kills your team and destroys the world. Overheat sets all the things you somehow can't kill with psycho boost on fire, when you can finally feast on the flesh. Superpower beats up blobs of fatness and makes your muscles that much bigger every time you use it. Finally, when all the opposing pokemons' pants are wet, and they've all found a corner to hide in, Spinda can take a break, healing all its insignificant war wounds.

In all seriousness, though, when this amazing tier does become omotm, I will actually run this thing with sticky web. Sure it'll probably suck, but maybe what i said up there will come true.

Banned deucer.
Mamp here's a way to neuter Sketch:

Sketch can only copy every move from the same gen it was introduced in, basically rendering it useless. :)

Genmons is a meta in which every Pokemon can learn every move introduced in the same generation as it was, and only those moves.
That's the logic behind my Sketch provision.
