Gothitelle
[Overview]

Gothitelle is a fairly decent Pokemon; however it lacks many of the important traits it needs to compete with many of the other Psychic-types in the VGC 2011 metagame. Despite this, it provides a bit of originality and can offer some surprise factor.

[SET]
name: Trick Room
move 1: Trick Room
move 2: Psychic
move 3: Shadow Ball
move 4: Protect
item: Mental Herb
ability: Frisk
nature: Quiet
evs: 252 HP / 92 Def / 164 SpA
ivs: 0 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Gothitelle's best use in VGC is as a Trick Room starter. With fairly decent stats, Gothitelle takes many hits and dishes back some pain. Outside of Trick Room, however, Gothitelle can really fall short, so it's important to try and get it up quickly. Its bulkiness is what makes it somewhat useful, as this allows for it to take even super effective hits with ease and set up.

Gothitelle has decent enough coverage in order to make it a worthwhile try on any aspiring Trick Room team. With STAB Psychic, many of the common Fighting-types such as Terrakion and Conkeldurr fear it. Shadow Ball allows for coverage against Ghost-types who may threaten Gothitelle in certain situations. Protect is a golden move in VGC, allowing Gothitelle to not only scout its opponent's item with Frisk, but also take advantage of seeing one of its moves.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Gothitelle tends to be outclassed by both Reuniclus and Musharna. Reuniclus boasts a higher Special Attack and HP stats, as well as lower speed, making it a better candidate to set up and sweep. Musharna also is bulkier than Gothitelle, and has higher Special Attack stat, which also makes it a stronger Trick Room starter. However, Gothitelle has more special bulk than both of them, allowing it to tank hits. It is also much less used, which can catch opponents off guard. Overall, Gothitelle doesn't have much to use to damage the opponent, which can leave it in a bad position in the game. More often than not, Gothitelle can be dead weight, but if supported right it can be a great set up Pokemon.

[Other Options]

Gothitelle can also run an excellent support set. With access to both Reflect and Light Screen, Gothitelle, equipped with Light Clay, can set up screens that give your team the ability to tank hits. It also gets Rain Dance, which it can set up to help teammates who can take advantage of it. Gothitelle also has access to Thunder Wave and Toxic, which can harm opponents greatly throughout the match.

[Checks and Counters]

Gothitelle's main counters are nearly anything that can resist both Psychic and Shadow Ball. Notable ones are Scrafty, Krookodile, and Hydreigon. Without proper support, Gothitelle will be totally walled by these powerful Pokemon. Its checks are bulkier Ghost-types as well as others who can shrug off Psychic and Shadow Ball. Jellicent, Tornadus, Thundurus, Landorus, and many of the commonly seen offensive Pokemon can bother Gothitelle. It also does not resist the very common Heat Waves Water Spout, Surf, Rock Slide, and Earthquake that are all around the VGC metagame.

Gothitelle's other upside is it's high-ish Special Defense and access to Mirror Coat. If you invest wisely, you can deal some surprising damage to ghosts and darks.

A Reuniclus with 252 HP / 44 Def / 4 SpD has better bulk on both sides than Gothitelle assuming your EV spread, whilst boosting high SpA and lower Spe (which is better). Even Sassy 252 HP / 252 SpD Reuniclus has better special and physical bulk than Sassy max/max Gothitelle. Relaxed 252 HP / 252 Def Reuniculus is also more physically bulky than Relaxed max/max Gothitelle whilst roughly having the same special bulk. I'm fairly sure that Musharna can also EV itself to be bulkier than Gothitelle on both sides, regardless of Gothitelle's EV spread, whilst having superior SpA and lower Spe. In other words, the only reason to use the above set over Reuniclus is Frisk (and that's giving up Magic Guard / Telepathy) or use moves that both Reuniclus and Musharna don't get.

[EDIT] You could also try utilisng Gothitelle's superior Speed as NC described it.

To add to the above post, here are some stats for comparison's sake:

Gothitelle (your EV spread):
HP: 177
Def: 127
SpA: 149
SpD: 130
Spe: 63

Musharna (obviously not optimal but to easily compare) 172 Def / 220 SpA / 116 SpD:
HP: 191
Def: 127
SpA: 170
SpD: 130
Spe: 30

Therefore, to avoid being 100% outclassed (unless you really like frisk lol), I would recommend running enough speed to get to somewhere ~90-100 and play similar to chandelure by using trick room against faster teams while just attacking or cancelling out the trick room against slower teams. It's too bad this didn't get imprison.

edit @Huy: no damage to darks :)

This is a completely awful pokemon because its outclassed in whatever it does, but I think this is the best it can do. 1/2/

Read that orange part and fix it to make it more clear. Otherwise...

Seconding that comment. The VGC metagame was very unkind to Gothithelle. It's not often outclassed by Reuniclus or Musharna; it's ridiculously outclassed by Reuniclus or Musharna. It's deadweight in VGC, especially since its so fast paced. Outside of Magic Room..it has no niche.

Musharna is more specially bulky than Gothitelle with this spread thanks to its much higher HP. It is also more physically bulky, has more SpA, is slower, and has a better ability.

Is it possible to ask BlueCookie for his VCG Gothitelle set to put in this analysis? It'll be nice to have a Gothitelle set that isn't completely outclassed.

Safeguard Thunder Wave Psychic Protect were the moves. It got 91 speed to outspeed max speed Amoonguss so it can beat it with Safeguard and then spam thunder wave safely for the most part. I don't know exactly what EV spread he used but I think I made a similar one at least but I can't fish it out right now. All I remember was 91 speed stat 44 SpD EVs Calm nature, near max HP, 12 SpA EVs (odd number stat) and the rest in defense and Sitrus Berry. Something like that.

In that case, would it be possible to change the set to something like this?

[SET]
name: Safeguard
move 1: Psychic
move 2: Safeguard
move 3: Trick Room / Thunder Wave
move 4: Protect
item: Mental Herb / Sitrus Berry
ability: Frisk
nature: Calm
evs: 252 HP / 44 Def / 4 SpA / 164 SpD / 44 Spe

44 Spe EVs to outrun Timid Amoonguss, with Safeguard to render Spore useless. Brilliant Amoongus counter, that also provides much needed team support with Trick Room or Thunder Wave (choice should depend on the team). 44 Def EVs to avoid being OHKOed by Archeops Flight Gem boosted Acrobactics. Rest goes in HP and then SpD (4 SpA gives an extra stat point, as 164 and 168 SpD EVs give the same SpD). For more even defences, you could move some SpD EVs into Def so you have only 44 SpD EVs, but no more; there's a big improvement in special durability from 40 and 44 SpD EVs for only 4 SpD EVs.

I know the old set has gone through QC, but no serious player would ever use that set due to it being completely outclassed, where as this set actually utilises its superior Speed to avoid being outclassed (mainly by outspeeding Amoonguss) and is a good set (it must be if a similar set won the Worlds VCG!)
