[OVERVIEW]
Due to not being able to use Shadow Tag, Gothitelle is seriously outclassed by its fellow PU Psychic-types. Despite having fairly solid Defense, its lack of any exceptional traits and poor Speed make it a fairly poor option for a team compared to Pokemon such as Grumpig, Kadabra, and Duosion, all of which bring far more to a team in the form of unique resistances, revenge killing, and a more effective Calm Mind user, respectively. All Gothitelle can hope to do is trap a foe weak enough to set up on, but this strategy falls to careful switching or simply facing a Dark-type. Although it can break through stall teams somewhat effectively and can be difficult to KO if allowed to set up, Gothitelle is pressured too much by offensive teams and fairly easy to chip away at.
[SET]
name: Trapper
move 1: Mean Look
move 2: Psychic
move 3: Calm Mind
move 4: Rest
item: Leftovers
ability: Frisk
nature: Bold
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
=======
Mean Look traps weak attackers such as Stunfisk for Gothitelle to set up on with Calm Mind, which allows it to accumulate Special Attack boosts to hit harder and Special Defense boosts to be harder to revenge kill. Rest keeps Gothitelle healthy to give it time to set up as much as possible, while Psychic allows it to deal decent damage with a STAB attack.
Set Details
=======
Maximum Defense investment minimizes the damage Gothitelle takes from physical attacks, making it somewhat hard to take down once set up. Leftovers provides extra passive recovery while boosting with Calm Mind, and Frisk allows Gothitelle to scout for opposing Pokemon's items, providing a little extra utility.
Usage Tips
=======
Don't bother setting up with Gothitelle if the opposing team still has a Dark-type, as Gothitelle won't be able to sweep. Only attempt to trap weaker attackers that Gothitelle will be able to safely use Rest against, such as Metang and Audino, and be sure to stay healthy with Rest so as not to be easily revenge killed. Gothitelle can also have some utility in checking physical attackers such as Floatzel or Monferno, and it can be preserved to deal with particularly dangerous foes. If you predict the opponent to switch to a Pokemon that cannot be used as setup fodder for Gothitelle once trapped, it can be advantageous to get off chip damage with Psychic.
Team Options
=======
Gothitelle does not need much team support, but teammates to remove Dark-type foes are essential to permit it to reliably sweep. Rock-, Ice-, and Electric-type teammates such as Probopass, Regice, and Zebstrika can threaten Vullaby and Murkrow. Machoke and Monferno are noteworthy partners for being able to threaten Dark-types, particularly Pawniard, while Gothitelle can trap many of their checks, such as Metang and Altaria.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other options
=======
Gothitelle can run a number of offensive sets, including Choice Scarf, competitive attacker, and offensive Calm Mind sets, but all are simply outperformed by Mr. Mime, Kadabra, and Grumpig thanks to their higher base Speed and access to Focus Blast in the case of Grumpig and Mr. Mime. Gothitelle can attempt to use RestTalk rather than Mean Look, but without trapping it is easy for the opponent to switch out to an appropriate counter and beat Gothitelle one-on-one. Signal Beam is an option over Psychic to avoid being walled by Dark-types, but is somewhat weak even at +6. Gothitelle can also be used on Sticky Web teams with an offensive Taunt set to gain a Competitive boost from Defog users, but it is still very slow even with Sticky Web support and does not possess Grumpig's useful resistances or Mr. Mime's utility and unique coverage.
Checks and Counters
=======
**Dark-types**: Dark-types such as Mightyena and Pawniard can stop a Gothitelle sweep due to their typing advantage and threaten to KO it. Vullaby fails to do much damage to Gothitelle but can stall it out of Psychic PP if necessary.
**Strong Attackers**: Wallbreakers such as Dodrio, Ninjask, and Stoutland are serious problems for Gothitelle because they can KO it as it attempts to set up or once Gothitelle has KOed its trapped foe.
**Taunt**: Taunt users such as Grumpig and Floatzel prevent Gothitelle from being able to set up or recover health. Misdreavus can also boost against Gothitelle with Nasty Plot after preventing it from setting up with Taunt.
**Offensive Momentum**: Most of the time, the opponent won't leave a passive Pokemon in against Gothitelle and will switch in a strong wallbreaker, making it hard for Gothitelle to trap and set up.
