[OVERVIEW]

Due to not being able to use Shadow Tag, Gothitelle is seriously outclassed by its fellow PU Psychic-types. Despite having fairly solid Defense, its lack of any exceptional traits and poor Speed make it a fairly poor option for a team compared to Pokemon such as Grumpig, Kadabra, and Duosion, all of which bring far more to a team in the form of unique resistances, revenge killing, and a more effective Calm Mind user, respectively. All Gothitelle can hope to do is trap a foe weak enough to set up on, but this strategy falls to careful switching or simply facing a Dark-type. Although it can break through stall teams somewhat effectively and can be difficult to KO if allowed to set up, Gothitelle is pressured too much by offensive teams and fairly easy to chip away at.

move 4: Rest

nature: Bold
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
=======

Mean Look traps weak attackers such as Stunfisk for Gothitelle to set up on with Calm Mind, which allows it to accumulate Special Attack boosts to hit harder and Special Defense boosts to be harder to revenge kill. Rest keeps Gothitelle healthy to give it time to set up as much as possible, while Psychic allows it to deal decent damage with a STAB attack.

Set Details
=======

Maximum Defense investment minimizes the damage Gothitelle takes from physical attacks, making it somewhat hard to take down once set up. Leftovers provides extra passive recovery while boosting with Calm Mind, and Frisk allows Gothitelle to scout for opposing Pokemon's items, providing a little extra utility.

Usage Tips
=======

Don't bother setting up with Gothitelle if the opposing team still has a Dark-type, as Gothitelle won't be able to sweep. Only attempt to trap weaker attackers that Gothitelle will be able to safely use Rest against, such as Metang and Audino, and be sure to stay healthy with Rest so as not to be easily revenge killed. Gothitelle can also have some utility in checking physical attackers such as Floatzel or Monferno, and it can be preserved to deal with particularly dangerous foes. If you predict the opponent to switch to a Pokemon that cannot be used as setup fodder for Gothitelle once trapped, it can be advantageous to get off chip damage with Psychic.

Team Options
=======

Gothitelle does not need much team support, but teammates to remove Dark-type foes are essential to permit it to reliably sweep. Rock-, Ice-, and Electric-type teammates such as Probopass, Regice, and Zebstrika can threaten Vullaby and Murkrow. Machoke and Monferno are noteworthy partners for being able to threaten Dark-types, particularly Pawniard, while Gothitelle can trap many of their checks, such as Metang and Altaria.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other options
=======

Gothitelle can run a number of offensive sets, including Choice Scarf, competitive attacker, and offensive Calm Mind sets, but all are simply outperformed by Mr. Mime, Kadabra, and Grumpig thanks to their higher base Speed and access to Focus Blast in the case of Grumpig and Mr. Mime. Gothitelle can attempt to use RestTalk rather than Mean Look, but without trapping it is easy for the opponent to switch out to an appropriate counter and beat Gothitelle one-on-one. Signal Beam is an option over Psychic to avoid being walled by Dark-types, but is somewhat weak even at +6. Gothitelle can also be used on Sticky Web teams with an offensive Taunt set to gain a Competitive boost from Defog users, but it is still very slow even with Sticky Web support and does not possess Grumpig's useful resistances or Mr. Mime's utility and unique coverage.

Checks and Counters
=======

**Dark-types**: Dark-types such as Mightyena and Pawniard can stop a Gothitelle sweep due to their typing advantage and threaten to KO it. Vullaby fails to do much damage to Gothitelle but can stall it out of Psychic PP if necessary.

**Strong Attackers**: Wallbreakers such as Dodrio, Ninjask, and Stoutland are serious problems for Gothitelle because they can KO it as it attempts to set up or once Gothitelle has KOed its trapped foe.

**Taunt**: Taunt users such as Grumpig and Floatzel prevent Gothitelle from being able to set up or recover health. Misdreavus can also boost against Gothitelle with Nasty Plot after preventing it from setting up with Taunt.

**Offensive Momentum**: Most of the time, the opponent won't leave a passive Pokemon in against Gothitelle and will switch in a strong wallbreaker, making it hard for Gothitelle to trap and set up.

Gothitelle is seriously outclassed by its fellow PU Psychic-types without being allowed to use Shadow Tag. Despite having fairly solid physical defense its lack of any exceptional traits and poor Speed make it a fairly poor option to fit on a team compared to Pokemon such as Grumpig, Kadabra, or Hypno, all of which bring far more to a team in the form of unique resists, revenge killing, or wish passing, respectivelyNP Pass is something Hypno does better than Wishpassing, so I wouldn't frame Hypno's niche like that given Audino exists. Can also talk about Duosion here instead as a slow booster with mono Psychic STAB when youre talking about Psychics that directly outclass this CM set.All it can hope to do is trap a foe weak enough to set up on, but this strategy falls to careful switching or simply facing a Dark-type. Although it can break through stall teams somewhat effectively and can be difficult to KO if it is allowed to set up, Gothitelle is pressured too well by offensive teams and fairly easy to chip away at.Optional, but you could mention Competitive's use on Sticky Web Teams (this has the ability to switch into common Defog users (Vullaby / Prinplup) and to smack them with a +2 Thunderbolt), but mention the problems with using it and what it's outclassed by in those contexts as well.

trapping can be legit annoying
always force u into an offensive mon
to kill it
but what if it psychs and clicks psych
actually remind me to put that in UT

Team Options

Gothitelle does not need much team support, but teammates to remove Dark-type foes are essential if it wants to reliably sweep. Trapinch can trap and KO Pawniard and MightyenaTrapinch trapping Pawniard or Mightyena is not something that really ever happens, since both check Trapinch when at full (and not vice versa; Careful EQ does 60% to Mightyena, while Pawniard always survives a Careful EQ without prior damage). Would remove this and use Monferno instead as a partner that can beat Mighty/Pawn. , while Rock-, Ice- and Electric-type teammates such as Probopass, Regice, or Zebstrika can threaten Vullaby and Murkrow. Machoke is a noteworthy partner for being able to threaten Dark-types while Gothitelle can trap many of Machoke's checks such as Metang.

Signal Beam is an option over Psychic to avoid being walled by Dark-types, but is somewhat weak even at +6. Emphasize HP Fighting or Shadow Ball / Thunderbolt / Psychic / Taunt with Competitive and Colbur Berry here, as an option to be paired with Webs. Taunt prevents slower Defogs, while Competitive + Thunderbolt does what I said above in Overview by having a much better matchup against Vullaby than standard Grumpig does. Colbur lets it take a Knock Off from Machoke if necessary and fire back with Psychic, while also checking and luring Pawniard with Colbur + HP Fighting.

Checks and Counters
=======

**Dark types** : Dark types such as Mightyena and Pawniard can stop a Gothitelle sweep by virtue of typing and threaten to KO it. Vullaby fails to do much damage to Gothitelle but can PP stall Psychic if necessary.

**Strong attackers** : Wallbreakers such as Dodrio, Ninjask, and Stoutland are serious problems for Gothitelle because they can KO it as it attempts to set up or once Gothitelle has KOed its trapped foe.

**Taunt** : Taunt users such as Grumpig and Floatzel prevent Gothitelle from being able to set up or recover health. Misdreavus can also boost on Gothitelle with Nasty Plot after preventing it from setting up.

**Offensive Momentum** : Most of the time, the opponent won't stay on Gothitelle with a passive Pokemon and will switch in a strong wallbreaker, making it hard to trap and set up.
Do this, then it'll be 3/3 Megazard
