Gourgeist-S

[OVERVIEW]

Gourgeist-S sports great physical bulk, which lets it take on many powerful physical attackers in NU, as well as a wide support movepool. Furthermore, for a defensive Pokemon, Gourgeist-S has a decent Speed stat, which lets it set up Substitutes and spread burns with Will-O-Wisp much more easily. Gourgeist-S's defensive typing is a huge boon to it, allowing it to check Fighting-, Water-, and Ground-types, such as Sawk, Kabutops, and Torterra, as well as function as a reliable spinblocker. Unfortunately, Gourgeist-S's typing also makes it weak to Dark-, Fire-, and Flying-type attacks. Moreover, the prevalence of Knock Off in the tier also greatly hinders Gourgeist-S, as it is weak to it and abhors losing its item. Gourgeist-S's overreliance on wearing down its foes with residual damage leaves it easily shut down by common Magic Bounce and Taunt users, such as Xatu and Archeops, respectively.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Substitute allows Gourgeist-S to block status and stall out for more Leech Seed and burn damage. Leech Seed provides some recovery every turn while wearing down Gourgeist-S's foes. Will-O-Wisp punishes physical attackers that attempt to switch into Gourgeist-S while further wearing down foes alongside Leech Seed. Seed Bomb is used to nail Water- and Rock-types such as Quagsire and Kabutops, with Quagsire in particular being able to wall Gourgeist-S if it forgoes it. Foul Play is a viable alternative to ensure that Gourgeist-S can break Klinklang's Substitutes, which prevents it from potentially setting up on Gourgeist-S. Protect can be used for stalling out Leech Seed and burn and is generally a safer move, as it prevents Gourgeist-S from taking a potential hit and allows it to scout for what move Choice item users lock themselves into.

Set Details
========

Leftovers provides Gourgeist-S with passive recovery, helps it make more Substitutes, and works well in tandem with Leech Seed. Colbur Berry can be used so that Gourgeist-S can take Knock Off from Sawk and Shiftry better and burn them in retaliation, but it loses out on the much-needed recovery that Leftovers provides. Frisk allows Gourgeist-S to scout a foe's item, which could be beneficial for your team's strategy. The Speed investment with a Jolly nature allows Gourgeist-S to outspeed Pokemon with base 95 Speed and below, such as Electivire and Kangaskhan, and burn them before they can attack. 152 HP EVs maximize Leftovers and Leech Seed recovery and ensure that Gourgeist-S can make four Substitutes from full health instead of three. The rest of the EVs are invested in Defense to maximize its physical bulk. Alternatively, A spread of 248 HP / 156 Def / 104 Spe can be used for Gourgeist-S to have more bulk while still being able to outspeed Kabutops.

Usage Tips
========

Players should switch Gourgeist-S into Fighting-, Water-, Grass-, or Ground-types if it wants to switch in safely, as most of the time they are unable to do much against it. It should be noted that Gourgeist-S has a harder time switching into bulky Water-types such as Prinplup and Lanturn, as they both carry Scald, which can burn it. Gourgeist-S should set up Substitutes on Pokemon that cannot do much against it, such as Quagsire and Torterra. Gourgeist-S should avoid Knock Off, as it can heavily damage it and remove its Leftovers. Do not switch Gourgeist-S into status-inflicting moves such as Toxic and Will-O-Wisp, as they could cripple it throughout the game.

Team Options
========

Pokemon that can handle Dark-types and take Knock Off such as Mega Audino and Granbull are great partners, with Mega Audino also being able to provide Wish support. Sawk is also able to reliably beat Dark-types for Gourgeist-S with ease, but it does not appreciate losing its item. Rock-types such as Regirock and Rhydon have great defensive synergy with Gourgeist-S, as they can beat Fire- and Flying-types while Gourgeist-S can handle the Fighting-, Water-, and Ground-types that plague them. Many of them can also provide Stealth Rock support to help wear down the opposing team. Xatu is a huge threat to Gourgeist-S, so Pokemon that can handle it, such as Malamar and Liepard, are excellent partners. Entry hazards, particularly Toxic Spikes, can prove to be a problem to Gourgeist-S, so entry hazard removers such as Rapid Spin Kabutops and Defog Prinplup work well with it. Fire-types such as Pyroar and Magmortar also benefit Gourgeist-S, as they can handle Ice-types that trouble Gourgeist-S while it can beat Water-types. Gourgeist-S can also wall Fighting-types for Pyroar.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

A defensive utility set with a spread of 248 HP / 36 Def / 224 Spe and a Jolly nature is also a viable option. Pain Split can be used as a form of recovery, but it is extremely unreliable. Toxic is an option over Will-O-Wisp to wear down Gourgeist-S's defensive checks and counters, such as Mega Audino. Disable can be used to prevent foes from using their last move and works especially well against Choice-locked Pokemon. Synthesis can be used as a form of reliable recovery, but Gourgeist-S does not really have a slot to fit it in. Magic Coat is an option to allow Gourgeist-S to bounce back Taunt and any entry hazard moves from its foes. Shadow Ball is an option, as it is one of the few ways Gourgeist-S can get off some damage on Xatu. Rock Slide is an alternative to deal with Xatu and Scyther, which Gourgeist-S lures in. Lastly, Destiny Bond may be used if Gourgeist-S is not needed anymore to ensure that it can get rid of an opposing setup sweeper.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Xatu**: Xatu is immune to Will-O-Wisp and Leech Seed due to Magic Bounce and can either heavily damage it with Heat Wave or set up Calm Mind. However, Xatu has to be careful of the rare Shadow Ball.

**Fire-types**: Fire-types such as Pyroar, Ninetales, Combusken, and Magmortar can safely switch into Gourgeist-S when it uses Will-O-Wisp and KO it with their Fire-type STAB moves.

**Flying-types**: Flying-types such as Swellow, Vivillon, Rotom-S, and Scyther can hit Gourgeist-S with their Flying-type STAB attacks, but Scyther has to be careful of a Will-O-Wisp. Swellow has Guts and thus does not mind taking a Will-O-Wisp. Special variants of Swellow are able to dent Gourgeist-S even through a Substitute with Boomburst due to their ability, Scrappy.

**Status**: Toxic and burns can severely cripple Gourgeist-S and hinder its ability to make Substitutes. Thunder Wave can also cripple Gourgeist-S, as it quarters its Speed. Toxic Spikes is very effective against Gourgeist-S, as it cannot avoid it with Substitute.

**Ice-types**: Ice-types such as Cryogonal, Aurorus, and Jynx can hit Gourgeist-S with their respective STAB moves. None of them mind taking a Will-O-Wisp, but they all have to be careful of Seed Bomb.

I don't really have that much experience with SubSeed but are Phantom Force or Protect that good? I've never seen anyone use either of them.

Also I've seen a lot of non-SubSeed sets used to good success recently, I remember Finchinator and Raseri using it from the top of my head so thoughts on that would be good too.

There is still a mention of Sneasel in the Team Options; you should remove that when possible.

Blast - I did indeed use Gourgeist in the past, but an unconventional variant of it (I guess I'd call it a utility set). http://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/post-nupl-set-dump.3539486/#post-6243310 - first set in this post

Magic Coat and Destiny Bond could probably be added to the OO and then maybe a general mention of a utility set could be added, but I'll leave that up to everyone else (I don't think it deserves a set outright, but it certainly warrants a mention somewhere).

Yeah it is. Just wondering if QC wants the utility set that Finch mentioned to be a set?
Probably just mention the set in OO since I don't see it being as close to effective as the SubSeed set, but since Finchinator has had the most experience with the set I'll leave it up to him.

Consider moving Foul Play up to Moves because it prevents it from being set up fodder for mons like Klink behind a sub. Mention that Protect allows it to scout for what moves Choice Mons lock them selves into which can be cool with Frisk. Maybe put a mention of Colbur on the set, or at least keep it in OO in order to handle Sawk better. You keep on mentioning Phantom Force in CC, but there is no mention of Phantom Force any where else on the analysis. On Fletchinder in CC mention Rock Slide since it does a lot more than Phantom Force. On Swellow in CC, mention that the common set is Boomburst + Scrappy which disregards Sub, so it has to be very careful.

Overall great work, QC 1/3 once you implement everything

OO will suffice.

In Usage Tips, add Grass moves to the first point, in my opinion.

Agreeing with metaphysical on Foul Play.

Arguably worth mentioning the merits of having Frisk as an ability (scouting items), but this isn't too big.

Good work overall, 2/3

Thanks! I've implemented the checks and wrote this too

mention Shadow Ball in OO if you want a move to hit Xatu

0 SpA Gourgeist-Small Shadow Ball vs. 248 HP / 0+ SpD Xatu: 134-162 (40.2 - 48.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

it doesnt have to much use outside of Xatu, but it works

also in the first set, if you want more bulk you can run just enough speed for Kabutops (EVs: 248 HP / 156 Def / 104 Spe) there might be a better EV spread but 104 Speed with a neutral nature is all you need for adamant Kabu

Also I'd reword the bit about Sawk taking Knock Offs, it really doesnt want to take any, but I still think its a good partner, just needs to be worded differently

otherwise 3/3

[OVERVIEW]

Gourgeist-S sports great physical bulk, which that lets it take on many powerful physical attackers in NU, as well as a. This is coupled with Gourgeist-S's wide support movepool. Furthermore, for a defensive Pokemon, Gourgeist-S has a decent Speed stat, (AC) which lets it set up substitutes Substitutes and spread Burns burns with Will-O-Wisp much more easily. Gourgeist-S's defensive typing is a huge boon to it, allowing it to check Fighting-, Water-, and Ground-types, (AC) such as Sawk, Kabutops, and Torterra, (AC) as well as having the benefit of being a function as a reliable spinblocker. Unfortunately, Gourgeist-S's is not without its flaws; Its typing is like a double edged sword as it is also makes it weak to Dark-, Fire-, and Flying-types attacks. Moreover, the prevalence of Knock Off in this the tier also greatly hinders Gourgeist-S, (AC) as it is weak to it and it abhors losing its item. Gourgeist-S's over-reliance on wearing down its opponents foes with residual damage leaves it to be easily shut down by common Magic Bounce and Taunt users, (AC) such as Xatu and Archeops, respectively.

Moves

Substitute is a great move to use, allowing Gourgeist-S to block status and stall out for more Leech Seed and burn damage. Leech Seed is used to provides some recovery every turn while wearing down its Gourgeist-S's opponents foes. Will-O-Wisp punishes physical attackers that attempt to switch in to into Gourgeist-S while further wearing down opponents foes alongside Leech Seed. Seed Bomb is used as a STAB move to nail Water- and Rock-types such as Quagsire and Kabutops, the former with Quagsire in particular being able to wall Gourgeist-S if it forgoes to run it. Foul Play is a viable alternative to ensure that it Gourgeist-S can break Klinklang's Substitutes, (AC) which prevents it from potentially setting up on Gourgeist-S. Protect can be used for stalling out Leech Seed and burn and is generally a safer move, (AC) as it prevents Gourgeist-S does not have to from take taking a potential hit and it also allows it to scout for what Choice-locked move pokemon Choice item users lock themselves into.

Leftovers provides Gourgeist-S with passive recovery and , (AC) helps it to make more Substitutes, (AC) and works well in tandem with Leech Seed. Colbur Berry can be used so that Gourgeist-S can take Knock Offs from Sawk and Shiftry better and burn it them in retaliation, (AC) but it loses out on the much-needed recovery that Leftovers provides. Frisk allows Gourgeist-S to scout an opponent's a foe's item, (AC) which could be beneficial for the team your team's strategy. The speed Speed investment with a Jolly nature allows Gourgeist-S to outspeed base Pokemon with base 95 Speed and below, (AC) such as Electivire and Kangaskhan, (AC) to and burn them before they can attack it. 152 HP EVs for provide as much Leftovers and Leech Seed recovery as possible and ensures that Gourgeist-S makes 4 four Substitutes from full health instead of 3 three. The rest of the EVs is are invested in defense Defense to maximize its physical bulk. A spread of 248 HP / 156 Def / 104 Spe can be used if players opt for Gourgeist-S to have more bulk while still being able to outspeed Kabutops.

Usage Tips
========

Players should switch Gourgeist-S into Fighting-, Water-, Grass-, or Ground-Typestypes if it wants to have a switch in safely switch, (AC) as most of the time they are unable to do much against it. It should be noted that Gourgeist-sS has a harder time switching into bulky Water-types such as Prinplup and Lanturn, (AC) as they both carry Scald, (AC) that which can potentially burn it. Players should set up substitutes Substitutes on pokemon Pokemon that cannot do much against Gourgeist-S such as Quagsire and Torterra. Gourgeist-S should avoid taking Knock Off, (AC) as it can heavily damage it and it does not like losing remove its Leftovers. Do not switch Gourgeist-S into status (if you mean Toxic Spikes, please specify a bit) or status-inflicting moves such as Toxic and Will-O-Wisp, (AC) as they could cripple it throughout the game.

Team Options
========

Pokemon that can handle Dark-Typestypes and take Knock Off such as Mega Audino and Granbull are great partners, (AC) and the former can with Mega Audino also being able to provide Wish support. Sawk is also able to reliably beat Dark-types for Gourgeist-S with ease but does not appreciate losing its item. Rock-Typestypes such as Regirock and Rhydon have great defensive synergy with Gourgeist-S, (AC) as they can beat Fire- and Flying-types while Gourgeist-S can handle the Fighting-, Water-, and Ground-types that plagues them. The both of them Many of them (Rock-types in general that is) can also provide Stealth Rock support to help wear down the opposing team. Xatu is a huge threat to Gourgeist-S, (AC) so pokemon Pokemon that can handle it, (AC) such as Malamar and Liepard, (AC) are excellent partners. Malamar and Liepard are prime examples to handle Xatu with ease. Entry hazards, particularly Toxic Spikes, can prove to be a problem to Gourgeist-S, (AC) so entry hazard removers such as Rapid Spin Kabutops and Defog Prinplup work well with it. Fire-Typestypes such as Pyroar and Magmortar also benefit Gourgeist-S, (AC) as they can handle Ice-Typestypes that trouble Gourgeist-S while it can beat Water-Typestypes. Gourgeist-S can also wall Fighting-types for Pyroar.

A defensive utility set with a spread of 248 HP / 36 Def / 224 Spe and a Jolly nature is also a viable option. (I'd personally prefer to put it here after all the move mentions, though it certainly does feel weird to start OO with, especially as the only alternate set :x) Pain Split can be used as a form of recovery, (AC) but is it is extremely unreliable. Toxic is an option over Will-O-Wisp to wear down Gourgeist-S's defensive checks and counters, (AC) such as Mega Audino. Disable can be used to prevent the opponent from using their last move and works especially well against Choiced-locked users. A Defensive Utility set with a spread of 248 HP / 36 Def / 224 Spe and a Jolly nature is also a viable option. Synthesis can be used as a form of reliable recovery, (AC) but Gourgeist-S does not really have a slot to fit it in. Magic Coat is an option to allow Gourgeist-S to bounce back any hazards and Taunt and any hazard moves from its opponents foes. Shadow Ball is an option, (added a comma here) as it is one of the few ways Gourgeist-S can get off some damage on Xatu. Rock Slide is an alternative to lure in deal with Xatu and Scyther, which Gourgeist-S lures in. Lastly, Destiny Bond may be used if Gourgeist-S is not needed anymore to ensure that it can get rid of any an opposing setup sweepers. (You wanted Destiny bond to be your last noted move, so I moved this to before the other Xatu mention)
