NU Gourgeist-Super

Overview
########
Gourgeist-XL is one of the most physically bulky Pokemon in the NU tier, with a rather impressive base 122 Defense and a solid base 85 HP. This extra bulk makes it worth using over its smaller counterparts. Gourgeist-XL is not exactly a sitting duck either, as it has a solid base 100 Attack and a decently powerful STAB move to back it up. Its typing is very unique, giving it resistances to common attacking types such as Water and Ground and immunities to Fighting and Normal. However, this typing does give it weaknesses to common types such as Dark, Fire, and Flying. Another big issue with Gourgeist-XL is its lack of reliable recovery, which makes it prone to being worn down. Its abilities are also useless, with the exception of the somewhat situational Frisk. Gourgeist-XL also faces competition for a team slot with its smaller formes, Vileplume, and Ferroseed, which have a bit more utility.

Physical Wall
########
name: Physical Wall
move 1: Seed Bomb
move 2: Will-O-Wisp
move 3: Leech Seed
move 4: Pain Split / Protect
ability: Frisk
item: Leftovers
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
nature: Impish

Moves
========
Seed Bomb is Gourgeist-XL's strongest reliable STAB move that beats the Water- and Ground-types Gourgeist-XL generally walls. A Ghost-type STAB move can be run instead of Seed Bomb; however, Shadow Sneak is too weak and Phantom Force gives the opponent a free turn. Will-O-Wisp is used to cripple Pokemon that normally get walled by Gourgeist-XL, such as Kangaskhan. Leech Seed and Pain Split are some of Gourgeist-XL's only forms of recovery; alternatively, Protect can be used over Pain Split to stack up burn and Leech Seed damage and to scout moves on Choice-locked Pokemon. Rock Slide can be used to hit Ice-, Fire-, and Flying-types on the switch.

Set Details
========
The EV spread maximizes Gourgeist-XL's physical bulk. Leftovers is useful for passive recovery, and Frisk is the most useful of Gourgeist-XL's abilities, allowing Gourgeist-XL to scout which item the foe is carrying.

Usage Tips
========
Gourgeist-XL is severely crippled by Knock Off, so it's best to not try walling something that likely has it. It is best sent out on something it can wall, such as Feraligatr without Ice Punch and the majority of Stealth Rock leads. However, some of these Pokemon can carry coverage moves that beat Gourgeist-XL, such as Fire Blast Tauros. Also, don't use Will-O-Wisp or Leech Seed if you predict that a Pokemon immune to it is going to switch in.

Team Options
========
Gourgeist-XL is better on bulkier teams, as it loses momentum on offensive ones. A Pokemon that resists Fire-type moves is needed, as Fire-type Pokemon are immune to Will-O-Wisp. Specifically, Thick Fat Hariyama is a great partner for Gourgeist-XL, as it can sponge Fire-, Ice-, and Dark-type attacks. Rock-types such as Rhydon are good teammates, as they beat Fire- and Flying-types and can do decently against Ice-types. Gourgeist-XL also appreciates cleric and Wish support from Pokemon such as Audino and Lickilicky, allowing Gourgeist-XL to wall for as long as possible. A Rapid Spinner or Defogger is also appreciated, as Gourgeist-XL gets worn down by entry hazards.

Other Options
########
Gourgeist-XL can use a SubSeed set, though that is better suited to Gourgeist-S as it has a higher base Speed. A Choice Band set with Shadow Sneak, Rock Slide, Seed Bomb, and Explosion can be used, though this set faces competition from other offensive Grass- and Ghost-types. Gourgeist-XL has a colorful special movepool which includes Giga Drain, Focus Blast, and Fire Blast, though its pitiful base 58 Special Attack makes these moves bad options. Gourgeist-XL can also be a surprisingly decent Trick Room setter, as it can use Explosion to safely bring in a Trick Room sweeper once Trick Room is up. However, this set is generally inferior to the physical wall set outside of dedicated Trick Room teams.

Checks & Counters
########
**Fire-types**: Gourgeist-XL has trouble with Fire-types due to their immunity to Will-O-Wisp and the fact that most are specially offensive. Fire-types can also take its STAB moves relatively well, but will likely hate taking a Rock Slide.

**Offensive Pressure**: Due to Gourgeist-XL's lack of recovery outside of Leech Seed and Pain Split, it's very easy to wear down, though Leech Seed + Protect can mitigate this.

**Dark-types**: Dark types carry Knock Off, which severely cripples Gourgeist-XL. However, they generally don't like getting burned.

**Taunt**: Taunt prevents Gourgeist-XL from spreading burns and using Leech Seed. However, depending on the user, Taunt users can be crippled by a burn on the switch, and most won't like taking a Seed Bomb.

**Grass-types**: Grass-types are immune to Leech Seed and don't take much damage from Seed Bomb. Moreover, several of them have super effective coverage moves against Gourgeist-XL, such as Ludicolo, or can set up in Gourgeist-XL's face, such as Ferroseed and Lilligant. However, some Grass-types such as Cacturne are crippled by burn.

**Xatu**: Xatu bounces back Gourgeist-XL's Leech Seed and Will-O-Wisp while dealing a hefty amount of damage with Heat Wave. It can also set up Tailwind and dual screens while Gourgeist-XL is in play, due to Gourgeist-XL's Grass-type moves not doing much. However, Xatu can't really take Rock Slide or a Ghost-type STAB move unless it's a defensive variant.

**Other Ghost-types**: Other Ghost-types such as Mismagius and Haunter can cripple Gourgeist-XL and do not mind being burned. They also can do a hefty amount of damage to it, but can be Leech Seed fodder with proper prediction. However, physical Ghost-type attackers such as Golurk or Dusknoir can't beat Gourgeist-XL under most circumstances.

**Ice-types**: Gourgeist-XL is one of the only spinblockers that loses to Cryogonal. Jynx also beats Gourgeist-XL and can be used as setup fodder for Substitute + Nasty Plot sets.

**Flying-types**: While most of the used Flying-types in NU are physically based, they can still beat Gourgeist-XL under certain circumstances. For example, Archeops can run Heat Wave on mixed sets. Swellow also won't get affected much by a burn due to its ability, Guts. Specially offensive Flying-types such as the previously mentioned Xatu and Chatot can beat Gourgeist-XL relatively easy.

Should there be any other sets aside from the Physical Wall set? I was thinking of making Trick Room lead it's own set but I dunno.

Trick Room lead isnt common enough to warrant its own set imo, if another QC has had experience with it and wants to give it its own set I'm fine with that.

it's not decently physically bulky, it's one of the bulkiest pokemon in the tier on the physical side and a lot bulkier than gourgeist small because that needs to run speed

add xatu to counters

Wouldnt say it can really come in on Kabutops as +2 252+ Atk Life Orb Kabutops Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Gourgeist-Super: 266-316 (71.1 - 84.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
prior damage and Kabutops can beat Gourgeist.

[Usage Tips]
Please expand this out, two lines isnt enough, one of which pretty much just says avoid a super effective coverage

[Team Options]
"A bulky Fire resist is needed as they are immune to Will-o-Wisp. Examples of these include Lanturn, Hariyama, Dragalgae and Seismitoad." This doesnt make any sense lol
Need a couple more options for teammates

He probably meant 'they' as in Fire-types, so he wants a Fire-type check. It'd kind of be awkward if Specs Pyroar kept coming in on this thing and take out a member every time.

Well it still should be changed it's obviously not the right way to say it

Gourgeist-Super Gourgeist-XL is one of the physically bulkiest Pokemon in the NU tier on the physical side (there is no spectrum), with a rather impressive 122 base Defense and a solid 85 base HP. This extra bulk makes it worth using over its smaller counterparts. It is not exactly a sitting duck either, (AC) as it has a solid 100 base Attack and a decently powered STAB move to back it up. Its unique typing is very unique, giving gives (I don't really see the causal link here)it resistances to common attacking types such as Water, Fighting, (AC) and Ground. (remove spaces, you get a beautiful transition to its negatives this way ^_^) However, this typing does have provide Gourgeist with weaknesses to common types such as Dark, Fire, (AC) and Flying. Another big issue with Gourgeist-Super Gourgeist-XL is its lack of reliable recovery, which makes it prone to being worn down. Its abilities are also useless with the exception of the somewhat situational Frisk. Gourgeist-Super Gourgeist-XL also faces competition for a team slot with its smaller formes, Vileplume, (AC) and Ferroseed, which have a bit more utility than the big pumpkin.

Moves
========
Seed Bomb is Gourgeist's strongest reliable (Phantom Force exists) STAB move, and has with a solid base 80 Base Power backing it up. Will-O-Wisp can cripple a number of the Pokemon it Gourgeist-XL generally walls (such as?). Leech Seed and Pain Split is are one of Gourgeist's only best forms of recovery, and so is Pain Split. (or something like that, but this was quite awkward) However, Protect can be used over Pain Split to stack up burn and Leech Seed damage. (it's also really cool for scouting out Choiced mons' attacks)

A Ghost-type STAB move can be run instead of Seed Bomb; (SC) however, (AC) they are either Shadow Sneak is too weak in the case of Shadow Sneak, or and Phantom Force can give the opponent a free turn like Phantom Force. Rock Slide can be used over Pain Split or Protect to hit Bug-, Ice-, (add dashes) and Flying-types trying to check Gourgeist on the switch. (I don't understand why you're explicitly mentioning Bug-types here, seeing as Gourgeist is not weak to them; are there some specific ones that happen to easily deal with it? I don't play this tier myself so I don't know)

Set Details
========
The EVs spread is rather simple, giving maximizing Gourgeist-Super Gourgeist-XL's the most amount of physical bulk as possible. Leftovers is useful used for gradually passive recovery. Frisk is the most useful of Gourgeist's abilities, (AC) and is great for allowing it to scouting which item the foe is carrying.

Usage Tips
========
Gourgeist-Super Gourgeist-XL is majorly severely crippled by Knock Off; (SC) and as such, it's best not to try and walling something that likely has it. It is best sent out on something it can wall pretty well, such as Feraligatr without Ice Punch or the majority of Stealth Rock leads. However, some of these Pokemon can carry coverage moves that allow them to beats Gourgeist, such as Fire Blast Tauros. Don't click Will-O-Wisp or Leech Seed if you can predict that a Pokemon immune to it is going to switch in.

Team Options
========
Gourgeist-Super Gourgeist-XL is better on bulkier teams, (AC) as it loses momentum on offensive ones it loses momentum. A bulky Fire-resist Pokemon that resists Fire-type moves is needed, (AC) as Fire-types are immune to Will-O-Wisp. Specifically, Thick Fat Hariyama is a great partner for Gourgeist, (AC) as it can sponge Fire-, Ice-, (AC, add dashes) and Dark-type attacks; (SC) though other bulky Fighting-types can work too, though they can't take on those types as well. (The latter part was really confusing tbh, seeing as you're covering mons that resist Fire here. Hariyama happens to do so because of its ability, but this doesn't apply at all to other Fighting-types, so it makes little sense to cover them here. It's best to remove this or make it into an entirely new point) Rock-types (such as?) are a good other option, (AC) as they beat Fire-, Ice-, (add dashes) and Flying-types. It Gourgeist-XL also wants appreciates cleric and Wish support such so that it can wall as long as possible. Audino and Lickilicky both work for this. A Rapid Spinner or Defogger can be used since because Gourgeist does gets worn down by entry hazards.

Other Options
########
Gourgeist-Super Gourgeist-XL doesn't exactly have a lot of other options. It can do use a Substitute + Leech Seed set, though that is better suited to Gourgeist-XS due to that Pokemon's higher base Speed. A Choice Band set with using Shadow Sneak, Rock Slide, Seed Bomb, (AC) and Explosion can be used for fun its surprise factor (stuff you mention here should at least have a remotely legitimate reason to be used, which 'fun' isn't. If that's really the only reason, it's better to remove it), though this set faces competition with from other offensive Grass- (add dash) and Ghost-types. Gourgeist has a colorful special movepool which that includes Giga Drain, Focus Blast, (AC) and Fire Blast, though Gourgeist's its pitiful base 58 Special Attack makes these moves not a very good option. Gourgeist-Super Gourgeist-XL has a surprisingly decent Trick Room setter set, as it can use Explosion once Trick Room is up to safely bring in a sweeper once Trick Room is up. However, this set is generally inferior to the physical wall set outside of teams using dedicated Trick Room teams sweepers. (I don't really get this point because these are the only teams where you should be using it anyway, of course it's bad as a standalone set; are Trick Room teams bad or is it outclassed on these teams or something?)

Checks & Counters (about your formatting: you don't need the dots here; also, you should add a space after each bullet)
########
  • **Fire-types**: Gourgeist has trouble with Fire-types due to their immunity because they are immune to Will-O-Wisp, (RC) and that most being are mostly specially based offensive means that it's not going to live long. In particular, Pyroar completely counters Gourgeist, (AC) as it's immune to Ghost as well as Will-O-Wisp.

  • **Dark-types**: Dark types carry Knock Off, a very which severely crippling cripples thing to Gourgeist. However, they generally don't like getting burned.
  • **Taunt**: Taunt prevents it Gourgeist-XL from spreading burns and using Leech Seed.
  • **Grass-types**: Grass-types are immune to Leech Seed. Mention that Seed Bomb allows Gourgeist to hit the Water- and Ground-types it walls, most notably Kabutops which it can spinblock against.

Comments:

I hate when people just say "resistances" and add in immunities. I also added in the normal immunity to beef up that part a bit, feel free to not mention it.

A bit too much fluff The seed vobomb section;i chose to cut the base power mention.

Rock-types like rhydon beat ice-types? Really. It's not out of the question to mention some rocks taking on ices okay (steel rocks weak to hp fight/ground i.e. ice offensive coverage, water rocks weak to frzdry), but mention it more like them being okay vs ice types in addition to trashing fires and flyings.

Considering that ghost coverage is a meh moves option, pyroar isn't that much more of a counter than the other fires.

What uses taunt, how does it do vs gourg, can it take WoW on the switch-in?

Fires grasses xatu also take seed bomb, v. relevant as your only attack. Xatu can beat it in so many other ways, honestly just say "xatu sets up whatever it wants while beating you any way it wants" or something.

Where are the ices and other flyings and ghosts in checks and counters?
