Grammar Prose Workshop

Goddess Briyella

Banned deucer.
Hi there. :)

This thread will be a workshop via the Smogon Starters Hangout, where users can become knowledgeable in the ways of Grammar and Prose (commonly referred to here as GP). What is this, exactly? This is the facet of the site that deals with editing content to be sure that it is grammatically correct, among other things, before going onsite to be available to the public. Areas that have a need for this ability are as follows:

Areas Where GP Is Needed

Contributions & Corrections

Commonly abbreviated to C&C, this is the part of the site where Pokemon analyses and articles that dictate or explain relevant information for the many generations and tiers are written. The GP phase happens after the QC (Quality Control) phase, which fine-tunes the competitive quality of the content. After an analysis has received all its Quality Control checks (indicated by QC 1/3 or whatever phase of the project it's in), the writer will change the thread tag to Copyediting and it's time for the writeup to go through GP, which consists of two parts. After the writer of the analysis has implemented two GP parts, the analysis is generally ready for upload.
The Smog & The Player**

These facets of the site are of webzines that highlight Smogon and Pokemon Showdown, respectively. As of right now, Quality Control for both of these areas occurs before the articles are approved (not to say that people can't make suggestions later), which means you don't have to wait for Quality Control checks to be able to GP check these. You only need to wait for the thread tag to change to Grammar, which indicates that the writer is done with the article and is now awaiting your edits. After the writer of the article has implemented two GP parts, the article must have HTML done, and then it is generally ready for upload in the next release of the webzine. Be advised that art may come to a project at any time of these projects and has no bearing on the order of phases therein.

**You must have permission to see the writing workshops of these areas, which is usually only given through having an article approved in the submission phase or becoming part of the official GP team.
The Competitor

This area of Smogon focuses on articles that highlight the tournament scene here at Smogon. Only one GP check is required for one of these articles, so typically this task is better off in the hands of an experienced GP checker. The writer will usually ask directly for an official GP checker's assistance here.

Knowing The Tricks Of The Trade

In addition to knowing basic grammar that includes punctuation, how to use commas, when to use a dash or a hyphen, knowing not to allow a run-on sentence or a series of repetitive ones, PokeGrammar here is also very important, especially considering that pretty much everything you would GP check here will contain at least some. Here are some common examples of correct ways to use PokeGrammar here at Smogon:

  • Fire-type is the correct way to identify a Pokemon's typing by using an adjective. When talking about the type itself, as in "Torkoal and Charizard are of the Fire type," the hyphen is not needed. Fire typing is fine just like this with no hyphen.
  • OHKO is the term used here to indicate a one-hit-KO, or an attack that causes a foe to faint in one blow. 2HKO, 3HKO, and so on, are used to indicate how many hits it takes. When pluralizing this, knowing the difference is important. OHKOs is used when referring to kills themselves as nouns. OHKOes is used when it's an action, as in "Fire Blast OHKOes Ferrothorn."
  • Mega Evolutions and the act of Mega Evolving are capitalized and do not contain hyphens anywhere. Mega Mewtwo X is the correct way to write this, for instance.
  • All Pokemon names, moves, items, abilities, names of stats, areas in-game, and otherwise proper nouns are always capitalized. Klinklang, Life Orb, Speed Boost, Special Defense, and Pallet Town are written as such. It's important to note that evasion and accuracy are lowercase, however.
A full list of the criteria the GP team follows can be found here (I suggest bookmarking it). This will require practice to become totally familiar. If you've lurked here on Smogon for a while, a lot of the common terms and usage of the terms should be somewhat second-nature by now, which is a huge benefit. If you haven't lurked very much, not to worry; this is a task that becomes easier with experience because there's a lot of repetition. It won't take long to catch on even though it may seem like a ton.

fleurdyleurse has compiled an extensive list of notes for new GPers to use as a reference as well, which can be found here.

Additionally, as the place you'll be getting your practice in will be the C&C forum, you'll need to familiarize yourself with the correct set format for Generation VI, which can be found here. Looking around in the C&C forum will let you find examples of how this is used, and you will catch on easily. The reason this is so important to know is that the format will cause the upload to be rejected if there is even one thing wrong with the set format. The mods and site staff will be able to catch these errors, but knowing it yourself saves them the trouble and also makes you more handy as a GP checker to have around.

Applying Your Knowledge As Contribution

Before being accepted as an official member of the GP team, you'll obviously need to prove that you have what it takes to fit the bill. The best way to show your skills here is to do what we call amchecks, or amateur checks. These can be posted in any analysis after it reaches the Copyediting phase as indicated by the thread tag. The writer is not required to implement your changes, but they are allowed to, and it's not uncommon for an official GPer to come behind you and validate your work or give you a few pointers to help you improve. Keep in mind, however, your amchecks do not count as official checks and thus do not count toward the completion of the Copyediting phase, unless an official GPer stamps your work to indicate that it is satisfactory (which is huge if that happens). However, official GPers will not always go over amchecks and may go on and just post an official one. Remember that you cannot leave placeholders for amchecks, as they are not official; always make sure the writer knows it's an amcheck to avoid confusion. Amchecks can be done in The Smog if you already have access for another reason.

Now, to the hands-on part of this. The first thing you'll want to do is establish a key at the top of your amcheck post, which indicates what colors mean to add and remove content, and you can use them to indicate other things as well, including side comments, capitalization, and so on.

An example of this is as follows:

Overview
########
Zangoose is one of the most effective wall breakers wallbreakers and late-game sweepers in the NU metagame. Zangoose also shines as one of the best possible sweepers for Sticky Web-based teams. After just a single turn needed to activate toxic boost, Zangoose has more initial power than most Pokemon in the tier. Its power can be bolstered further with Swords Dance, although Zangoose's poor bulk and lack of resistnces makes it difficlut for it to find a time to set up. This forces Zangoose to rely on double switches, and pivoting moves in order to switch in safely. Despite Zangoose's excellent offensive moves in Facade, Knock Off, and Close Combat Zangoose's base 90 speed is merely above-average. Thankfully, Quick Attack and Sticky Web support can make up for this flaw, making Zangoose one of the top offensive threats in the tier.

Overview

Zangoose is one of the most effective wall breakers wallbreakers and late-game sweepers in the NU metagame,(replace period with comma) Zangoose and it also shines as one of the best possible sweepers for Sticky Web-based teams (you should probably add Sticky Web users to Team Options below). After just a single turn needed to activate toxic boost Toxic Boost, Zangoose has more initial power than most Pokemon in the tier. Its power can be bolstered further with Swords Dance, although though Zangoose's poor bulk and lack of resistnces resistances makes it difficlut difficult for it to find a time to set up. This forces Zangoose to rely on double switches,(RC) and pivoting moves in order to switch in safely. Despite Zangoose's excellent offensive moves in Facade, Knock Off, and Close Combat,(AC) Zangoose's base 90 speed Speed is merely above-average (even for NU haha). Thankfully, Quick Attack and Sticky Web support can make up for this flaw, making Zangoose one of the top offensive threats in the tier.
As you might have guessed, (AC) and (RC) are short for add comma and remove comma, respectively. These are commonly used at Smogon in addition to the punctuation change simply because a color change on something so small can be easy to overlook otherwise. Comments you make, as indicated by your key, are not implemented and you can use them to convey thoughts you have throughout the read as you are checking. The example comment here regarding adding Sticky Web to Team Options is assuming that the writer left it out, and their mention of Sticky Web mitigating one of Zangoose's flaws is a good place to bring that to their attention.

You can use any colors you like, though I recommend at least starting with blue and red, especially since red is extremely easy to indicate that something is incorrect and casts out all confusion early on.

After you have 3 or so solid amchecks, you can submit an application to join the GP team by messaging Jellicent, SuperJOCKE, and Calm Pokemaster a submission including proof of your GP abilities. They will either tell you how you can improve, ask for more examples before they come to a decision, or add you to the GP team. If you'd like for an official GPer to look over your work, you can inquire about this in #grammar on IRC, where the AOps (@ rank, looks like a star on mibbit) are the official GP checkers. IRC is definitely the best way for you to get to know other GPers, get instant feedback or answers to their questions, and generally integrate yourself into the community.

Practice Here!

Below are some exercises that contain several errors. Test yourself here first if you'd like, by providing GP editions of these examples to correct where they are wrong. Some have more identifiable mistakes than others and some may need to be completely reworded.
Swoobat is a psychic flying type Pokemon with the ability Simple, which causes all of it's stat changes to double. It even gets Stored power to attack with, but it unfortunately does not have very good defense and special defense to put up with dammage.
Earthquake scores an easy OHKO against Magnezone even though it appears to be levitating. Steel and electric are both weak against ground which amplifies the weaknesss and so the opponet might switch in a flying type Pokemon to nullify the Move.
Yanmega was banned from RU for getting easy 2HKOes against almost everything in the metagame and its speed boost ability made it almost impossible to outSpeed. Zoroark was also banned in that suspect round for being able to fool opponent with illusion and hit with a strong knock off or Dark Pulse.
Some speculated that mega Camerupt was going to go all the way up to UU and get banned however it is seeing use in RU and even NU. A lot of people invest heavily in speed when using it to be able to move before Amoonguss and Slowking which are two mons that could prove truoblesome if they get to Move first.
onix has the highest defense stat of every mon in little cup just imagine it with eviolite well it actually runs berry juice because it can use it with sturdy to get up stealth rock and taunt is nice for it too and 17 speed. rock ground typing is bad four it tho because water and grass weakness.
Geomancy and Baton Pass are the combination that made people want to ban Smeargle. I'm telling you they could have just banned Geomancy and kept Smeargle but they didn't. Even though nothing outside of ubers can learn it so it was relly no reason not to just ban Geomancy. Or Power Herb.
The newly released Mega Rayquaza caused a huge tier shift here at Smogon, with its ability to hold an Item unlike other Mega Evolutions making it overwhelimngly strong for even the highest banlist. This led to the creation of Anything Goes and the reclassification of Ubers from banlist to a Tier. Rayqyaza is not allowed there for obvious reasons but they still have Salamence which is strong too.
Delta Stream is an exclusive ability to Rayquaza-Mega that makes all flying weaks nullify fast and right away. This means that a Normal/Flying Pokemon under these effects of that Delta Stream have no weaknesses even though the Notmal type makes it not resist Fighting despite being Flying.

I may have forgotten a few things, so I may edit this post later or make another post, depending on how this goes. We are having a live Q&A for this on IRC in #hangout on February 2nd at 6:00 PM EST if you want to come check it out and see what you can learn. A link to that channel can be found here.

Why does it sometimes make a second empty hide tag? :P
  • Removing "the ability" isn't really required, it's basically a lateral change which is basically a change that doesn't improve the sentence or make it worse.
  • Changing 'it' to Swoobat isn't really necessary, as there's no confusion what 'it' will refer to. Also, changing even to also isn't needed.
  • Removing 'to attack with' is okay, but the sentence wasn't exactly wrong before.
  • Changing 'it' from before to after 'unfortunately' also is a lateral change.
  • The sentence starting from 'unfortunately' should be split as otherwise you're implying that Stored Power and its defenses have some correlation which they don't. So it would be "Unfortunately, it does not have enough Defense and Special Defense to put up with significant damage."
  • You can mention it makes use of the Simple Calm Mind stat boosts by using Stored Power.
(to be honest I'm not a fan of the last sentence at all, something like 'it is too frail to set up' would be better for an actual analysis, but we're just looking at this from a grammatical standpoint afaik)

As for some general advice, I'd say make changes that you're sure improves the grammar/sentence structure of the sentence. Don't make lateral changes (Ender has elaborated on that in this thread) and you should be fine n_n

#1
  • Again, no need to remove 'the ability'.
  • You can mention it makes use of the Simple Calm Mind stat boosts by using Stored Power.
  • I like the change of 'but it'->period and the objective changes are good, nice job!
#2
  • Yea we don't need fluff, good call on that.
  • You missed the hyphen in 'Ground-types.'
  • 'amplifies its weakness' to what? Add 'to Ground' after that, otherwise it's not very clear. EDIT- Now that I think about it, that second sentence is really badly worded, just reword it.
#3
  • 'everything' -> 'every Pokemon' it's not really very important, but being formal is preferred in analyses and such.
  • Yeah there's nothing else, it's good how you're only making necessary changes. In the first sentence you could remove the comma and change 'made' to 'making' but that essentially is changing the meaning of the sentence so good job :)
Good job to both of you, just make sure to make necessary changes and make subjective changes where required!

Hi! Good check, just a couple things:
  • "while this Pokemon is in battle" is appropriate if it's a Pokemon that has an ability that isn't exclusive to it, but since it doesn't, just refer to Mega Rayquaza in place of "this Pokemon" for sake of clearing ambiguity. As for future examples, just think "is there any possible confusion in this sentence?" and if "yes" crosses your mind whatsoever, drop pronouns and "Pokemon" or "moves" or whatever the case may be and clarify.
  • "Rock type" and "Ice type" still need hyphens.
  • Such a huge subjective change should only be done if you're knowledgeable in the metagame or have a good idea of what the analysis writer is trying to say. You obviously did, as this works for the most part; just realize in the future whether or not your change is more suited for QC or not.
Good work overall! :)

hey SM, good check. A few things:
  • "even though it appears to be levitating" is fluff and you should remove it. "Fluff" is stuff that doesn't really add to the competitive education that the analyses are supposed to provide. What Magnezone "appears to be doing" isn't relevant whatsoever, so it should be removed.
  • I'm not sure if this analysis is against or using Magnezone, but since it seems to be "against", your changes to the last sentence are good!

hey, some really good checks Lucina. Just a few things:

#1
  • "it's" should be "its" since it's referring to Swoobat's stats.
  • The end of the first sentence could be reformatted to "which doubles its stats changes", which is more concise and while it's a subjective change, it cuts out fluff like "causes... to".
  • When you use "however" it should either be at the beginning of a sentence ("However, I think that...") or used after a semi-colon. So in this case, the second sentence should read "... to attack with; however, it does Defense and Special Defense to put up with damage."
  • You can always substitute clunky phrases for better verbs/adjectives. "Put up with damage" is a clunky phrase, so consider terms like "sponge" so that it can read "to sponge damage" or "to sponge hits".
#2
  • nice
#3
  • "OHKO" when used as a present tense verb instead of a noun should be styled "OHKOs". This includes "2HKO", "3HKO", etc.
  • "its Speed Boost ability" reads weird, so it's safest to change it to "the ability Speed Boost" or "its ability, Speed Boost, that...".
  • The addition of both "the" and the "s" to spell "opponents" was good, but only one of them was necessary.
#4
  • "would get banned to UU" would have been more than enough, as "going to be in the UU tier and get banned" insinuates it'd get moved to OU, but that wasn't specified in the original text, so the change is marginally incorrect.
  • Refer to my note on how to use "however" properly above.
  • You have a parenthetical around your additions for some reason, but EVs should be specified here, as a Pokemon isn't necessarily invested on anything. Does that make sense? Include "Mega Camerupt's EVs" and say that they are "heavily invested in Speed" for this portion to be as proper and unambiguous as possible.
  • "mons" should never be used in analysis - use "Pokemon" or "threats".
  • "prove troublesome" was fine, the change was unnecessary.
good job overall Lucina.

hey bravest, let's look at this:

#1
  • The end of the first sentence could be reformatted to "which doubles its stats changes", which is more concise and while it's a subjective change, it cuts out fluff like "causes... to".
#2
  • "the weakness to Ground-type attacks" should be clarified because the sentence doesn't have a specific target. Specify "Magnezone's" weakness to Ground-type attacks.
  • "nullify" was fine, though avoid also works.
#3
  • "led" should be "lead" since it is the past tense of "to lead"
  • "to a tier that banished Mega Rayquaza." would be concise enough for the final sentence, as everything after Mega Rayquaza's mention is fluff and unnecessary. We don't care about whether or not Ubers has Mega Salamence, too. This is about Mega Rayquaza.
#4
  • "exclusive ability to Mega Rayquaza" reads awkwardly, so just shift that around so it reads "ability exclusive to Mega Rayquaza".
The rest is good otherwise.

Neat job guys. There are a couple things I didn't nitpick about these because you don't need to be overly thorough in these checks since they are.. rather poor and not representative of the type of quality you're likely to find in C&C.

Onix has the highest Defense stat of every mon in Little Cup. (AP) (close sentence of with a period) Just imagine it Onix with Eviolite. (AP) well it actually it runs Berry Juice because it can use it with Sturdy to get set up Stealth Rock and Taunt (all that I highlighted in green needs to be capitalized) is nice for it too, (AC) and along with base 17 Speed. rock ground Rock / Ground typing is bad four it tho because water and grass weakness. (However, Onix Rock / Ground typing gives it 4x weakness to Water- and Grass-types.)
Geomancy and Baton Pass are the combination that made people want to ban rose suspicions in suspecting Smeargle for ban in UU. I'm telling you they could have just banned Geomancy and kept Smeargle but they didn't. (Geomancy should have been banned thus, keeping Smeragle in the UU tier.) Even though nothing outside of Ubers (capitalize) can learn it, (AC) so it there was really no reason not to just ban Geomancy. (AC) or (lowercase) Power Herb.
The newly released Mega Rayquaza caused a huge tier shift here at on Smogon. (AP) With (capitalize) its ability to hold an item (lowercase) unlike other Mega Evolutions making it overwhelimngly overwhelmingly strong for even the highest banlist. This leads to the creation of Anything Goes and the reclassification of Ubers from banlist to a tier. (lowercase) Rayqyaza is not allowed there for obvious reasons but they still have Salamence which is strong too. (not needed...I think)
Delta Stream is an exclusive ability to Rayquaza-Mega that makes all flying weaks nullify fast and right away. (ability that's exclusive to Mega Rayquaza, which nullifies Flying-type weakness.) This means that a Normal / Flying (space) Pokemon under these the effects of that Delta Stream have no weaknesses even though the Notmal type makes it not resist Fighting despite being Flying. (Normal typing makes it neutral to Fighting despite being a Flying-type.)

Idk, exercise 6 seemed like the only one I spent the most amount of time correcting. >.<

Coloring and formatting everything took me longer than writing these... Jesus Christ. Anyways, I read the "On Making Subjective GP Changes" thread after doing all this and realized I probably broke every single feckin' rule on there. Lateral changes, changes to tone/voice, diction + sentence structure, etc. What I probably did probably classifies more under rewriting... I kind of missed the point, choosing to rewrite things instead of fixing the obvious grammar errors. i suk =(

Posting them anyways because I spent like an hour freaking coloring the text (compared to like 10 mins writing lol). I'm using my "under 5 posts" card newb excuse to get out of this one.

Swoobat is a psychic flying type Pokemon with the ability Simple, which causes all of it's stat changes to double. It even gets Stored power to attack with, but it unfortunately does not have very good defense and special defense to put up with dammage.
Swoobat is a dual-type Psychic/Flying Pokémon with the ability Simple, which doubles the number of stages in any given stat change. Its moveset also includes Stored Power to take advantage of its unique ability – unfortunately, it lacks the necessary bulk to take repeated hits and thus is not very viable.

Earthquake scores an easy OHKO against Magnezone even though it appears to be levitating. Steel and electric are both weak against ground which amplifies the weaknesss and so the opponet might switch in a flying type Pokemon to nullify the Move.
Earthquake scores an easy 1HKO on Magnezone – ironic, given the fact that it appears to levitate. However, given Magnezone’s glaring 4x weakness to Ground-type moves, it is only logical that your opponent will switch to a Pokémon immune to it, so using Earthquake on Magnezone may turn out not to be the best idea.

As a result of RU’s third round of suspect testing, both Yanmega and Zoroark were banned from RU. Yanmega’s high base 116 Special Attack in addition to Tinted Lens and a pair of Choice Specs allowed it to score easy 2HKOs on essentially the entire metagame – alternatively, it could run Speed Boost, granting it near-immunity from revenge killing bar strong priority. On the other hand, Zoroark was banned for its deceitful ability Illusion. Its ability to run multiple sets combined with the deadly mindgames that Illusion provided made it nigh impossible to predict, making it exceptionally easy to trick an opponent and fire off a strong Knock Off or Dark Pulse.

Some speculated that mega Camerupt was going to go all the way up to UU and get banned however it is seeing use in RU and even NU. A lot of people invest heavily in speed when using it to be able to move before Amoonguss and Slowking which are two mons that could prove truoblesome if they get to Move first.
Before Mega Camerupt’s release, some speculated that it would rise all the way up to UU from its home in NU, where it had comfortably resided in since DPP. However, this turned out not to be the case, as it still sees common usage in RU and even NU today. Currently, its most effective sets revolve around heavy speed investment despite its abysmal base 20 speed. This allows it to outspeed Pokémon such as Amoonguss and Slowking, both of which could prove to be troublesome if given the chance to move first.

Smeargle’s combination of Geomancy and Baton Pass proved to be too much for UU to handle. This resulted in a Smeargle’s banishment to BL territory, despite the fact that the Smogon staff could have just implemented a Geomancy ban in a similar vein to the Swagger or Baton Pass Clause. Given the fact that nothing outside of Xerneas (who can’t even hear us from all the way up in the Ubers tier) and Smeargle can learn Geomancy, it would have proven to be a much less restrictive rule that could have still allowed Smeargle to participate in the lower tiers.

Delta Stream, the ability exclusive to the notorious Mega Rayquaza, has a rather unique effect – it halves the damage output of moves super effective on Flying-types (Rock/Electric/Ice-type moves). This means that a dual-type Normal/Flying Pokémon under the effects of Delta Stream has no weaknesses despite the fact that the Pokémon’s Normal typing results in a neutrality to Fighting rather than a resistance (due to Flying as a secondary type).

Don't have time at the moment to add in all the colorful stuff, but here's my first attempt at gp

Swoobat is a Psychic / Flying Type Pokémon with the ability Simple, which doubles all of its stat changes. It even gets Stored Power to use, but unfortunately, it does not have good enough Defense and Special Defense to put up with damage.

Alternately, replace “Defense and Special Defense” with “defenses.”

Earthquake easily OHKOes Magnezone. Magnezone's Steel / Electric typing makes it 4x weak to Ground-type attacks, so the opponent might switch in a Flying-type Pokemon to nullify the move.

Yanmega was banned from RU for getting easy 2HKOs against almost everything in the metagame, while its Speed Boost ability made it almost impossible to outspeed. Zoroark was also banned in that suspect round, being able to fool an opponent with Illusion and hit with a strong Knock Off or Dark Pulse.

Onix has the highest Defense stat of any Pokemon in Little Cup. Although Eviolite seems like a good fit, it actually runs Berry Juice with Sturdy to get up Stealth Rock. Taunt is a nice option with its 17 Speed. Its Rock / Ground typing is bad for it though, because of the 4x Water and Grass weaknesses.

Geomancy + Baton Pass is the combination that made people want to ban Smeargle. Nothing outside of Ubers can learn Geomancy, so there was really no reason to ban Smeargle instead of just Geomancy or Power Herb.

I'll edit in the others later.

Most of this is solid, but "Defense and Special Defense" is plural since there's two objects, so the correct form of the sentence would be "... does not have good enough Defense or Special Defense" or "... does not have good enough defenses".

Capitalization / uncapitalise

Onix has the highest Defense stat of every Pokemon in the LC tier.(period) At the first sight, Eviolite looks like a solid option to boost Onix's natural bulk even further; (add semicolon) however, Berry Juice is a superior option because it has good synergy with Sturdy, because it ensures that Onix can at least move once, if hazards are not counted. Onix has decent options in its movepool such as Stealth Rock and Taunt, which it can put to good use. It also hits a good base 17 Speed stat. (period) little cup just imagine it with eviolite well it actually runs berry juice because it can use it with sturdy to get up stealth rock and taunt is nice for it too and 17 speed. A Rock / Ground typing is bad four it though, (AC) because of a 4x weakness to Water- (Add Dash) and Grass-(Add Dash)type attacks weakness.

It's probably extremely funny that someone like me with bad grammar is doing this, but I want to practice more to save myself and GP members time with checking my work in the future :]

Here, I'll go through your check and highlight the parts you did right and what you can work on.

Onix has the highest Defense stat of every Pokemon in the LC tier. (first sentence corrected well) At the first sight, Eviolite looks like a solid option to boost Onix's natural bulk even further; however, Berry Juice is a superior option because it has good synergy with Sturdy, because it ensures that Onix can at least move once, if hazards are not counted. (You shouldn't use "because" twice in the same sentence here, as you can connect your two reasonings with a conjunction. Here, "Berry Juice is a super option because it has good synergy with Sturdy and ensures that Onix can at least move once if hazards aren't counted." would've been most appropriate. Also, "hazards" should always be "entry hazards") Onix has decent options in its movepool such as Stealth Rock and Taunt, which it can put to good use. It also hits a good base 17 Speed stat. (This is a case in which subjective changes are not always the best, because this can be worded a little better. "hits a good base 17 Speed stat" isn't entirely accurate because a Pokemon doesn't hit a stat; it would hit a "number", such as in the case of a "Life Orb number", or just have a good Speed tier. So, in this instance, it should be "Onix also has a good base 17 Speed tier" or "Onix has a good base 17 Speed stat".) A Rock / Ground typing is bad for it though, because of a 4x weakness to Water- and Grass-type attacks. (The weakness is Onix's - well, all Rock / Ground types' - so you should use "its" instead of "a" and lose the comma.)

You definitely understand the basics, so good job! Keep working on your grammar and you'll improve sooner than you think. I tried to explain everything as best I could - ask if you don't know what I mean by something.

I might as well give this a shot :P

Hey! This is a good check - I believe the only thing you looked over was capitalizing "Power" in "Stored Power". As far as subjective changes, I would discourage you from adding anything that doesn't really add to the text in a constructive manner. As this is an analysis, everything should be as concise as possible, so "that is blessed" doesn't make Swoobat having the ability Simple any less ambiguous because it was clear in the first place.

everything else looks good :toast:
