Arena
Earth Mausoleum
Arena: Earth Mausoleum
Field Type: Ground
Complexity: Intense
Format: All

Restrictions: No Natural Grass, Only Sandstorm & Clear weather permitted, Poorly-lit Indoor arena

Description: The Earth Mausoleum is a dark, desolate place inside a cave situated in a remote desert about 6km from the nearest city. At the entrance, you must proceed down a tunnel that is fairly dark, but is loaded to the gills with harmless Ground Type Pokemon, predominately Hippopotas & Sandshrew, even the occasional Garchomp lurking about the place. After your short walk through a prescribed route, you walk into a large, fairly well lit indoors arena, that looked very dull, but one thing's obvious; This was a Ground Type Paradise...
This arena has virtually the same dimensions as the ASB Tournament arena, but with a few differences. Firstly, the arena has mini-grandstands at the side, & the trainers stand on a Podium elevated up by 3 metres. Lastly, the arena ceiling is rather low at only 20m high.
Now, what does this arena have that gives Ground Types an edge? Firstly, The main arena floor is a hybrid of sand & dirt, mixed together to make a strange material that can easily be dug into. Additionally, the ceiling is low & creates a completely indoor feel, where Moves that require sunlight, like Solarbeam, & all other weathers bar Clear & Sandstorm, fail. Additionally, Pokemon using Sky Drop/Fly/Bounce fail to gain enough altitude to evade, that is, they become a normal attack. Next, there is a fairly large mud patch near the centre of the arena at about 10 metres in diameter, & goes to about 10 metres deep. This mud patch has a little bit of water in it, but enough to be considered an external water source, but in using it, the attack becomes combined with mud & becomes a Ground Type Attack. Additionally, anyone using the patch to dive are still vulnerable to seismic moves & get hit for double power.
Being a Ground Type paradise, how will the average player fare? We shall see soon enough...

Mechanics:
- Mud patches around the arena have enough water to be considered usable as an external Water Source.
However, all the mud means that such attacks become Ground Type moves.
Moves using these Mud Patches are also treated as Water-Type Moves for the purposes of Abilities such as Storm Drain.
Pokemon hiding in Mud Patches, while retaining the normal properties of Dive (Bar Typing), is also treated as the move: Dig, for the purposes of moves like Earthquake, Earth Power, etc
- Sky Drop, Fly, & Bounce all work like they normally do, but they do not gain enough altitude to successfully evade attacks.

Summary: Ground Type Paradise.

Well folks it looks like we are venturing into a new Gym Arena (at least for this referee) and we aren't the only new ones here. Challenger UllarWarlord is embarking on his first trip to the Mausoleum and the Ground type Gym Leader Its_A_Random is ready to accept him with open arms. Or something like that at least...

Time to flip the coin to see who makes the first move. As always heads represents the Leader in this one.

And heads it is! IAR, you're move.

Turn Order

There's no messing about here in the Ground Gym as the pair of Pranksters get to work immediately. Fluffee doesn't like the look of Stormamus' abilities and looks to turn him into an Insomniac. Unfortunately his Sand Stream already activated before the round even officially began. Meanwhile Utilitand Knocks Off those pesky Mental Herbs that Fluffee brought for protection while he watches Lucy Soak him so hard he turns into a Water type! Thats a little unexpected. Stormamus aids his team mate by ensuring Utilitand is the fastest Prankster on the field by burrying Utilitand in a Rock Tomb.

The Fidgit then makes use of such set up by Taunting the herbless Whimiscott and basically making her useless. Lucy and Stormamus both get down to the attacking with an Aqua Tail and Fire Fang respectively. The taunted Fluffee is once again unable to act as intented and really Struggles with the idea. Utilitand finally gets in on the attacking too but one might think the secondary effect of U-Turn is more what he is after. Still it did crit to help out a little bit. Lucy and Stormamus keep on going as they had been only this time the hippo has fangs of Ice.

IAR looks to be in a strong position here, but that is to be expected ordering second in doubles with a billion moves per mon. At least Ullar made sure Utilitand had to taste how annoying the Sandstorm can be too.

Capers hits the field, as he always seems to in these Gym matches (hell, all of IAR's matches really) and he gets right to work sinking his Razor Fangs into Fluffee with some Fire infused for reasonable damage. The little Grass type is looking very worse for wear so she tries to grab back whatever health she can with a Giga Drain on Stormamus but it isn't quite enough. A Fire Fang from the hippo too sees poor Fluffee out of HP and out of this match. Lucy has been left free all action long to work out her cunning plan... but unfortunately she has neglected to take into account all the mud in the Mausoleum and his Super Surf becomes a Ground typed move! That means Capers is able to fly right over it and Stormamus doesn't really mind it too much. That is going to be a costly mistake.

Indeed Lucy begins to pay for it immediately as both of the Ground mons turn on her with repeated Thunder Fangs as she is unable to do a thing about it. First due to that dreaded combo cool down and secondly because Capers bit her so hard she flinched!

SAND (INF)

Ullar is forced to recall his Fluffee one and swiftly replaces her with Charos the unusually bulky Dragonite. He comes out wearing some BrightPowder, which really seems a waste of an item slot when all it does is cancel out his detrimental nature effects. Oh well.

Stormamus and IAR both feel that the hippo might be the target of this round and he takes measures to Endure anything coming his way. Capers is playing the offence game however and uses a Power Trick to boost his attacking prowess to previously unseen levels. Indeed both Lucy and Charos pepper Stormamus with icy attacks but the Sand Streamer is able to last through them even without calling upon his bracing.

With the set up complete both Capers and Stormamus crunch away on Lucy with Thunder Fangs while Ullar continues to order his mons to focus on Stormamus, apparently unaware that all the direct attacks in the world aren't going to bring the Hippowdon down this round. Capers laughs at such silly mindless attacking just as he takes Lucy out with another hard bite and Stormamus is left able to ensure that more than just the Sandstorm is rendering Charos' Multiscale a moot point from here on out as he takes to him with some Ice Fangs. Ullar is about to be down to his last two standing mons while the Ground leader looks to be in a very strong position. This one may not take much longer.

When I said Golduck had 34 HP left in a VM, I did also account an error you made, where 100-(17.25×2)-(15.75×2) =/= 44 HP; rather 34. This means Golduck dies an action earlier. ;)

SAND (INF)

With UllarWarlord being forced to send out Viridi the Leafeon far earlier than he might have hoped the lack of a bench allows IAR to switch Utilitand back in without consequence. The Fidgit finds itself in the unusual role of preventing trickery rather than partaking itself as it knocks off that Heat Rock and makes darned sure the sand is going to keep on coming. Capers opts to just pepper both opponents with some rocks while Viridi hits an unfortunately neutral Leaf Blade on the many limbed one and Charos unleashes a big Ice Punch at the hardy little supporter. All this combines to give Utititand a decent hurting but IAR doesn't look worried.

Capers then turns his eye right to Charos and two swift Ice FangS, including a critical and broken up by a Twister from Utilitand and of course the obligatory Sandstorm combine to bring the big beast down! Viridi is left to fend for herself with some more decidedly neutral attacks on Utilitand as IAR moves into a commanding, unassailable lead.

UllarWarlord wasn't kidding when he said this was just pathetic on his part as Utilitand sets up to Endure every blow and he and Capers proceed to pepper Viridi with a series of super effective strikes as the Leafeon does really nothing of use. The end of the round sees this match mercifully over in a crushing defeat for IAR. No mons KOed, more or less 50% HP remaining and not even having to call upon a fourth Pokemon.

"Good Game. Perhaps you should come back with a better team or a better strategy? That said, you have a long way to go before obtaining the Seismic Badge, so...I certainly cannot see you challenging me next week if anything is for certain...Also, cheers deadfox for the reffing, much appreciated as usual."
